This summer, in addition to offering a variety of short classes and workshops, Columbia Art Center is holding its annual theme umbrella exhibition at Lake Kittamaqundi as part of Columbia’s 45th Birthday Celebration on June 23, 2012. And ... just around the corner is the Art Center’s EMPTY BOWLS fundraising event. Mark your calendars now for October 6, 2012. Tickets go on sale in late summer. MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings. OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 22 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College. Warm & Wonderful Exhibition SUMMER FEATURES Schedule SUMMER ART CAMP for Grades 1-8 Columbia Association Art Camp has a new and refreshing one-week format! Art Camp continues to open all avenues of creativity and discovery to everyone while providing a healthy and safe environment. Each week will have a unique theme as Art specialists will teach campers to experiment with colors, textures, mediums, and performance methods in a variety of different weekly projects. The campers will experience visual and performing arts processes, including printmaking, painting, 3-dimensional design, collage, drawing, clay works, puppetry, skit creation and much more as they travel throughout Columbia Art Center from studio to studio being encouraged to explore their imaginations and develop their own style of artistic expression(s). Programs include Zumba dance class and other performance related activities. Camp includes outdoor recreation time and swimming once a week. There will be a special collaborative camp project or show at the end of each one-week session. Campers are grouped together by age. Please Note: Campers are not permitted to go to the village center at any time during camp. Bring: Non-perishable lunch, swimsuit, towel, and smock or over-shirt to protect clothing. Wednesday, June 13 • 7pm T’ai Chi Chih Presentation Sharon Sirkis BSN, accredited T’ai Chi Chih teacher and certified energy healer, will speak on T’ai Chi Chih, a moving meditation that helps with grounding and focus, relaxing the body, and quieting the mind. A few T’ai Chi Chih moves will be demonstrated, which participants can practice on their own.

The Teacher Behind The Work: Celebrating Howard County Art Teachers Students and community members often see the beautiful work that art teachers mentor and inspire in their students. Rarely does the community have the opportunity to experience the personal artwork of those who teach in Howard County. This show features unique, one-of-a-kind two- and three-dimensional artwork by art instructors in Howard County who work in public, private and civic institutions. CALLIGRAPHY
BRUSH LETTERING (for ages 10 and up) with Sandy Olson NEW! Have fun with brushes, letters and paint! Learn how to use flat, edged watercolor brushes to make big or small, lovely or splashy letters with watercolors and gouache on a variety of paper. This class will give you the techniques for making creative signs, personalizing gifts, and even creating a fanciful background for other writing. Instructor will provide tools and materials for use in class. Students are encouraged to bring any flat, synthetic brushes (1/2” to 1”) that they already have, but are discouraged to purchase any additional supplies until after the first class. CERAMICS NOTE All Summer 2012 enrolled ceramics students can use open studio free of charge to practice their skills. Free open studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes, and glaze firings for up to 3 medium sized pieces (approximately 200 cu. in. each) per week of class, e.g. 8 week session — 24 pieces, 7 week session — 21 pieces. Students who wish to produce more than 3 medium pieces each week will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual tools and clay are not included. Please no production work.
GIVE IT A SPIN! with Joe Vitek For ages 18 and up! Have you always wanted to try your hand at making something on the potter’s wheel? Well, join us and see what it’s all about. In this three-hour workshop participants will cover methods of centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Students will decorate finished pieces using commercial under-glaze and slips. Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for the drying and firing of finished work. INTRODUCTION TO CHINA PAINTING
with Sarah Snowden Paint a family heirloom! Learn the basic techniques of the fine art of China Painting (also referred to as Porcelain Art) through demonstration and practice. You will learn how to use brushes to apply the on-glaze paint while working on your porcelain. Materials fee ($10 paid to the teacher at the first class) will cover all supplies: paints, mediums, use of instructor’s brushes, porcelain, firings, and other supplies. Pieces will be fired at the instructor’s studio and will then be available for pick-up at Columbia Art Center within 4 days after the workshop. Class is limited to 6 participants. COLLAGE PAPER COLLAGE: CUVISM (Cognitive Unconscious Visuality)
with George Sakkal If you believe that art is the creative manifestation of human experience, George will show you how to access your inner self and create unimaginable art. Using a unique paper collage methodology, learn how to access a wealth of human experience stored within your unconscious mind. Assisted by the retina and acting in conjunction with cognitive intuition, you will be guided by George’s 50 years of collage experience to explore, discover and achieve artistic creativity. with Laura Vernon Russell NEW! Needle felting is a dry felting technique that ‘fuses’ wool fibers to a base layer of wool or wool felt. Using specially designed needles, students in this introductory workshop will learn the rudiments of two-dimensional needle felting to create a picture made with wool. ADVANCED COLOR PENCIL
with Deborah Maklowski Build on the knowledge and skills gained in the introductory workshop (or your own experience) to take your colored pencil art to the next level. In a classroom setting, have fun working on individual colored pencil drawing projects based on your own chosen photographs. Your instructor will work with you to develop a concept, select materials and techniques, and offer technical and aesthetic guidance as you progress with your project. INTRODUCTION TO HAND-SEWING with Mattie Hayes NEW! This class is designed for beginning students and those who are in need of a refresher course in handsewing skills. 12 functional hand-sewing stitches will be introduced in this 4 week class. The final project will introduce you to quilting. As you learn how to sew, discussions will include all forms of the sewing arts and their techniques. Upon completion of the class, you will have a better outlook on sewing and be able to execute functional hand-stitching user-friendly for daily life. Bring a three-ring binder and pen to the first class. As you progress in the class, you will want to invest in a good pair of fabric cutting shears. PET PORTRAITURE MOSAIC WORKSHOP with Roz Zinner NEW! Immortalize your favorite pooch or kitty! You will learn how to create a mosaic piece using glass pieces. No prior mosaic experience is necessary. The instructor will provide lots of photos of mosaic pet portraits that will inspire you and help you form an idea about which colors, shapes, and andamento (flow) will best convey your pet’s personality. The class will cover mosaic basics of how to use a two-wheeled cutting tool, glue and grout. Students must bring to the first class a color photo of their pet that is 12” x 12” or less and has high resolution. Photos will be approved prior to the first class by emailing them to the instructor. You may be able to complete your project in the four sessions, but if not, you can complete your project at home. PRINTMAKING: WITHOUT A PRESS
with Janice Crum and Emily Michael Learn how to create beautiful and intricate prints without a press! No experience is necessary as this class will explore new, basic, user-friendly types of printmaking. Class is geared to students who do not have large spaces to work in or access to a printing press and are fully able to work with their hands. Class will utilize non-toxic, re-purposed and wallet friendly supplies for creating beautiful pieces of art work. Most supplies will be provided in the cost of the class and a short supplies list will be provided on the first day of class. Please bring a pad of Bristol board paper to the first class. Class Policies & Procedures DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.
SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon request.
CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.
ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption.
