This winter, Columbia Art Center is offering several new programs including COSTUME DESIGN FOR TEENS and a new school’s out VISITING ARTIST SERIES FOR AGES 11-13. Columbia Art Center is pleased to feature the local group — Columbia Photographers — in the Main Gallery in January 2012. MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings. OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 21 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College. LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive. DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. Art Center is located in the courtyard past the fountain (look for large round window). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on left. When Howard County public schools are out, come to Columbia Art Center for an amazing day of creative fun. Go home with cool art projects. Bring a friend, make new friends, bring a lunch, and enjoy a fun day of art! (Children will be served a snack and beverage after 3:30pm.) Registration begins one month before the School’s Out date. School’s Out Youth Visiting Artist Series for ages 11-13

NEW! Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to participate in its new Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to encourage young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring a sense of personal expression. The program provides an opportunity for students to connect with community artists and to cultivate a passion for the arts. Each guest instructor will discuss their personal art and creative process while teaching a unique and challenging workshop. Sponsored by Columbia Art Center Galleries and Little Patuxent Review. FREE monthly presentations by area artists, poets, actors, musicians and other specialists. Series includes: Monday, January 30 • 7pm • Pullman Coach Presentation Kevin J. Tankersley, who manages public trips and private charters for the classic 1930’s Pullman private rail road car, Dover Harbor, will speak on the history of the Pullman. The Pullman was once synonymous with first class rail travel for decades in the United States, The Dover Harbor is still in configuration and appearance as it was in the 1930’s. It is owned by the National Railway Historical Society, located in Washington, DC Chapter, Inc. Wednesday, February 15 • 7pm • What Makes a Great Film? Michael Giuliano and Marie Westhaver, professors who teach film courses at Howard Community College will discuss the genre of film. Evening discussion promises to be sheer delight for film buffs! Monday, March 12 • 7pm • Hunting the Oldest Stars in the Neighborhood Tom Brown, Mission Scientist for James Webb Space Telescope, will discuss how he uses some of the deepest images ever obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope to measure the ages of the stars in our galaxy and other galaxies in the universe.

CALLIGRAPHY with Sandy Olson

Have fun with pens, paper, ink and paint, whether you are a beginner or want to refresh your lettering skills. Three styles of lettering will be introduced and students will choose one to focus on for the class. CERAMICS

NOTE All winter 2012 enrolled ceramics students can use open studio free of charge to practice their skills. Free open studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes, and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium sized pieces (approximately 200 cu. in. each) per session, e.g. 10 week session = 25 pieces, 8 week session = 24 pieces, 7 week session - 21 pieces. Students who wish to produce more than 3 medium pieces each week will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual tools and clay are not included. Please no production work.

MINI-WORKSHOP SERIES I: UNDERSTANDING GLAZE AND GLAZING FUNDAMENTALS with Christina McCleary

Designed for introduction/intermediate levels. The glazed surface remains one of the major challenges for those working in clay. Aspects of glaze composition, fit, and function will be discussed. Demonstrations will focus on basic and multi-layered techniques. Learn how to develop a palette of color with which to work, as well as how to approach creating complimentary forms. Bring at least one bisque pot for practicing the techniques shown. Saturday, February 25, 10am-1pm (1 session) $40-Residents/$50-Non-Residents

MINI-WORKSHOP SERIES II: BASKET HANDLES

with Jann Tamburello Learn how to hand craft from basket reeds your very own handles for your ceramic pot. Discussion about form, function, and aesthetics will guide the demonstration. TRY YOUR HAND AT CLAY!

For ages 18 and up! Have you always wanted to try your hand at making something with clay? Well join us and see what it's all about. In this threehour workshop you will explore basic methods of handbuilding with clay. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon. You will decorate finished pieces using commercial under-glazes and slips. HANDBUILDING/SCULPTURE: DREAMING IT INTO CLAY with Christina McCleary

In this Introduction/Intermediate class, you will learn pinch, coil, slab, and handbuilding techniques. Gain both ability and personal style in clay. Demonstrations of functional, figurative, and abstract forms will guide you in developing individual works of art. You are welcome to complete class assignments or work on your own personal projects. Assignments may include plates, goblets, figurines, compound extruded forms, birdhouses, beads, tiles, and much more. Explore uses of hand-made stamps, found objects, and alternative firing techniques to make and finish your work. DAY AND WEEKEND ADVANCED CERAMICS STUDIO

Prerequisite: One Columbia Art Center intermediate level ceramics class and teacher approval. Designed as independent studio time for advanced ceramic students to pursue personal projects during day and weekend hours when classes are not in session. There is no instruction. If you believe that art is the creative manifestation of human experience, George will show you how to access your inner self and create unimaginable art. Using a unique paper collage methodology, learn how to access a wealth of human experience stored within your unconscious mind. ITALIAN DECOUPAGE with Susan Kieffer How would you like to turn that drab old piece of furniture into something spectacular? Well, with “Italian Decoupage” it’s truly possible! Italian decoupage is not the old art of cutting something out of a magazine and gluing it down to a surface. This method starts with paper napkins and turns into something really special. The finished surface of your project will resemble a hand-painted design. This technique can be done on any smooth wooden surface. You select and bring an easily transportable piece of wood (end table, stool, chair, or tray), and have fun transforming it into something that will make you proud. INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY with Dennis Gilbert

Learn the basic concepts of photography through the use of a digital camera and other digital media. Processing, adjusting, printing, and transmission of digital images will be covered. Using the industry standard, Adobe Photoshop® Elements, digital workflow and image adjustments will be presented. Access to a digital camera is desirable; however, those using a film camera will be able to scan prints, or have their film developed and placed on a CD by a commercial film processor of their choice. INTRODUCTION TO CHINA PAINTING

with Sarah Snowden NEW! Learn the basic techniques of the fine art of China Painting (also referred to as Porcelain Art) through demonstration and practice. You will work on your class piece using different techniques and learn how to use the brushes to apply the on-glaze paint. Materials fee ($20 paid to the teacher at the first class) will cover paints, mediums, use of instructor's brushes, the ‘first project’ porcelain, and other supplies and working space tiles. Pieces will be fired at the instructor's studio. You will be notified when works are ready to be picked up from Columbia Art Center. ADVANCED COMIC WORKSHOP FOR TEENS (for ages 12-17) with Clinton White

Complimentary workshop focusing on more story and comic creation! Continue refining your skills by experimenting with a variety of cartooning methods in unique and color ways. Students will learn ink, watercolor, and marker techniques, as well as drawing in both anime and western cartooning styles. HOMESCHOOLING PROGRAMS ART THROUGH THE AGES: PART I

(for ages 6-10) with Michelle C. Dunn Have fun exploring art history from ancient art through 1600 A.D. Each lesson and project explores the art and architecture of different ancient civilizations and empires. Learn various techniques and develop both artistic knowledge and skill. This in-depth exploration of art will be continued in Art Through the Ages: Part II which will take you on a journey from 1600 A.D. to modern times with contemporary art. (for ages 6-10) with Michelle C. Dunn Through different art projects, enjoy exploring art history from 1600 A.D. to the present. Each lesson will cover important changes and significant historical influences in art. Each project will allow you to practice new techniques and enable you to develop both artistic knowledge and skills. INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 or check Columbia Art Center’s website and facebook page.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action. SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon request. CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any

reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards

staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

Admission is open to everyone. Advanced registration is required and early enrollment is advised to reserve a space in each class and to avoid possible cancellation. A class will be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met three days prior to the class beginning. Several classes have pre-requisites. Please read course descriptions carefully.

Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. All rental rates include use of kitchen and restrooms. Tables and chairs are available for use. Renters are required to set up and clean rented studios. Catering is not provided by the Art Center. Please call the Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 for more information or to reserve your rental.*Rentals in galleries are contingent on type of show on exhibit.
