A WOMAN AN

What sounds in life do you hear that bring back memories or make your

thoughts drift to a different place and time? How about a train whistle way off in the distance —a lonely beckoning sound or raindrops falling gently on the leaves of the trees in summer-soothing. How about the sound of a motorcycle engine revving up- gearing upward to ----adventure! I remember back in my 20’s there were a few motorcycles around, but I never really paid much attention to them nor did I in the years that followed; what with a family to raise and all. In fact, the thought of a motor cycle NEVER even entered my mind all those years—but something happened a few years ago, seven to be exact. That “sound” of a motorcycle engine became more and more alluring. I kept hearing more and more of “them”. The “sound” was calling me, even the more “obnoxious” ones. I remember seeing groups of motorcyclists on the freeway on a warm, sunny summer’s day, not a cloud in the sky open road ahead, where were they going I wondered? How awesome they’re going somewhere, -- anywhere but here. By now my children were grown and I was a widow at this point for about eight years. As fate will often have her way, a gentleman in a bible group I was in stated he had a motorcycle he wanted to sell, actually two of them. One was a 250 Honda and the other was a 750 Honda Shadow. I said “Really”! “Could I take a look at them”? We set up a day for the viewing. Mind you I have NEVER, NEVER even ridden on a motorcycle nor even on the back of one and here am I asking to look at one. The day came. WOW! a beautiful cherry red 750 Honda Shadow with lots of shinny chrome, a windshield, sissy seat, sexy saddle bags and a helmet to match, who could ask for anything more. Talk about LOVE at first sight. He asked if I wanted to try it, but of course I could ride on the back. So, I geared up Page 6

got on the back and away we went. Wind blowing about me, the air clean and fresh. The scenery looked more real than I had ever known it to be from a car or even in a convertible. I felt exhilarated, giddy, apprehensive and oh so free all at the same time. YES, I’ll buy it!!!!!!!!!!! Those words flew out of my mouth with such ease. It almost felt like an out of body experience. “Is that’s my voice that just said that?” “It sounds like me.” I haven’t even road a motorcycle before. Talking about putting the cart before the horse. Well, I’m committed now. I looked up some rider courses and jumped in with both feet. Once I completed my course training, I finalize the purchase transaction and had the gentleman deliver the motorcycle to my house. Once he was gone, I just stared at this 2 wheeled contraptions in utter awe and intimidation. Thoughts kept running through my head from, “Holy Crap, what was I thinking?” to “WOW, I can’t believe this is mine; terror and excitement all rolled into one. I slowly lifted one leg and swung it over the bike and sat on the seat. I grabbed the handlebars and lifted it off the kickstand. Straddling the bike with both feet planted on the ground, I felt my heart start to pound out of my chest. I felt the adrenaline start flow throughout my body like a tidal wave that couldn’t be stopped. I lifted my foot and kicked that kickstand up and felt the flow from side to side. I turn the key, started the engine and rocked that throttle back giving a burst of gas. It’s wasn’t an overly load bike, but it had a sweet-sounding rumble and with every rock of the throttle, that sweet sound bellowed from the back. I thought to myself, there’s no going back know. I just sat there for a moment taking it all in. Once I calmed my heart rate, I took a deep breath, pulled in the clutch, popped www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

it into first gear. I slowly released the clutch and rocked the throttle back to give it gas. The motorcycle started creeping forward as I began to lift my feet. I was heading down the road shifting from one gear to the next. 2nd…..3rd…..4th…..5th and then finally into the 6th gear. The wind was flowing all around. I almost forgot to breath. The adrenaline was in full beast mode. I began to feel fearless. “Now I understand what these adrenaline junkies were talking about.” I thought to myself. I never knew this kind of feeling ever existed. The freedom and true feeling of living. Your inhibitions were left in the wind. Nothing was holding me back. I began leaning through the curved of the road hugging everyone. This came so natural to me, like I was born to do this. When I came to a stop, every ounce of me was shaking, my skin with tingling. I had this grin on my face that would not go away. I looked around, colors were more vivid, my sight seemed clearer, my hearing seemed to be more alert. Every sense seemed heightened. I knew then, I was hooked.

What’s going on Full Throttle readers? I hope everyone is taking advantage

of the sporadic nice weather we’ve been having and most importantly, I hope everyone is being as safe on the road. I know I’ve talked about seats before but with the riding season getting underway and all the new 2022 models showing up at the dealership and in your all’s garages, I wanted to go over them again because aside from handlebars, seats are the number 1 item we get the most questions about, and rightfully so as all seats are designed to do different things.

The right seat can change a bike in so many ways. It can completely change the bike’s look and bring a new sense of confidence to the rider. Harley Davidson has some pretty awesome after-market seats available for all their models. However, I would be doing you an injustice if I didn’t mention the standout names in this market, Mustang and Saddlemen. A new seat doesn’t seem all that fun to talk about, but when it’s the difference from you being able to ride your bike 10 miles compared to 1000, it’s a pretty crucial upgrade. It’s especially important if long distance travels are part of your motorcycle’s future. Mustang has a large line of seats that are all made to compliment the lines and looks of the motorcycles they are made for. For a seat to be comfortable, its what’s inside that counts. The foam that Mustang uses is both soft enough for comfort and resilient enough for those long 1000-mile trips. Mustang has spent many years formulating the perfect compound of polyurethane foam for that all-day comfort most motorcycle riders look for. The foam has a density of approximately four pounds per cubic foot, which means it’s going to feel firmer than your stock seats, but it’s less firm than most aftermarket seats. Mustang seats compress enough to mold to your body in about 15 minutes of riding. This is done every time you ride, so there is basically Mustang Super Touring no “break in period” for their seats. Your 3rd or 4th ride should feel just like your 100th ride. For the Touring models, Mustang has an extensive line of seats with different functions and purposes. The Mustang Super Touring seat offers the rider a 19inch pad and the passenger a 14-inch pad, which are ideal for comfort. The super touring seat sits the rider approximately 2 inches further back than their other touring seats. This is ideal for the taller rider that likes the ride height of the stock seats. The next seat I want to go over is the Mustang standard touring seat. If you like the position the stock seat puts you in, but you’re looking for more comfort, then this is the seat you should be looking at. This seat has a 17-inch driver pad and a 14-inch passenger pad. This seat is going to keep you in the stock seating position, but offer you the extra comfort that the mustang touring seats have become known for. The best part about this seat is that the bottom of the seat pan has an open design, so it will accept not only their own back rest, but it will also allow the Harley Davidson back rest to be installed and used with it. The last seat I’ll go over is my personal favorite and probably one of our bestselling seats at the dealership, the Mustang Lowdown seat. The Lowdown offers a 16.5-inch rider pad and the same 14-inch passenger pad that their touring seats offer. This seat will drop you down about an inch lower than the stock position and sit you back about 1.5 inches further. What makes this seat so popular,

aside from the seating position, is that its cut narrower through the front of the seat. This allows riders to firmly plant their feet on the ground when coming to a stop. The Mustang touring seat line is offered with or without a driver backrest, and heated or non-heated versions are available. Mustang also offers customized stitching options (upon request). Now that we’ve talked about Mustang, let’s talk about my favorite seat manufacturer, Saddlemen. The major difference Saddlemen seats bring to the table is their gel core technology. The SaddleGel uses an exclusive formulation, and has been developed over several year, to provide superior support and dampen road vibrations, which are a common factor of rider fatigue. Saddlemen seats are a little firmer to maintain the shape of the seat, but the seats are still soft enough to allow them to automatically adjust shape to conform to the individual’s body. The Saddlemen line of seats are extensive, and like the Mustang seats, are offered with or without a driver back rest, heated or non-heated, and are available with customized stitching upon request. Without question, the most popular touring seat from Saddlemen is their road sofa. The road sofa is made for the rider that loves to lay down 500+ miles a day. The seat offers their gel technology in both the rider and passenger for maximum comfort. The seat also offers a tall lumbar support, wide driver saddle, and a narrow nose of the seat, which improves the rider’s ability to reach the ground. The road sofa is available in a standard version or an extended version, which sits the rider back approximately 2 inches.

Saddlemen Road Sofa

Another crowd favorite, and the seat I run on my bike, is the Saddlemen Step Up seat. In the era of purpose-built motorcycles, there is no better seat to accommodate a rider than the Saddlemen Step Up seat. This seat offers all the comforts of the gel core technology combined with Saddlemen ultra foam, and has a very specific lumbar support design. This seat allows the rider to stay locked into place and provides them with the highest level of bike control. This seat is a favorite among stunt and performance riders. When it comes to seats, there are endless options out there for you to choose from. I covered a very small portion of the aftermarket seats, and what I Saddlemen Step Up consider to be the best seats on the market at this time. One of the awesome programs we offer at the dealership is our seat demo program. This program allows you to take a test ride with the seat on your own bike so you can get a feel for the comfort and features the seats offer. This is probably the best way for you to see what seat is going to fit you and your needs the best. I want to thank you all for taking the time to read this article. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! Sorry Boys, No Men Allowed!

MAKING THEIR MARK: WOMEN MOTORCYCLISTS FROM THE EARLY YEARS TO TODAY! Women have been riding motorcycles as long as men, and the exploits of some women riders are just as dar- ing and mind-boggling as those of their male peers. Remember, in the early days of motorcycling -- around the late 1800s and early 1900s when motorcycles were little more than bicycles with motors attached -- Americans bought the machines for transportation, not recreation. Families could afford motorcycles at the time, but not cars. So, it wasn’t all that uncommon to see women riders. After all, the price difference between a motorcycle and a car was substantial. For example, in 1909 a Harley-Davidson motorcycle cost about $325. And an inexpensive Ford Model T car that year? Try $850. Put another way, the price of a Model T equaled about a year’s salary. But through assembly-line production, Ford got the price of a Model T down to $440 in 1915, putting a car within reach. The price dropped to just $380 in 1927. More and more cars were sold, and fewer and fewer motorcycles. Since that time, motorcycles were bought primarily for recreation, and primarily by men. Pioneering women riders did make their marks in the motorcycling world, however, including Augusta and Adeline Van Buren, Theresa Wallach and Bessie Stringfield. The Van Buren sisters were among the first to ride coast to coast, traveling aboard an Indian Power Plus in 1916. They were the first women to ride motorized vehicles to the summit of Pikes Peak, accomplishing that feat in the same year. In the 1930s and 1940s, Theresa Wallach of England became well known for racing and long-distance riding, besides serving as a dispatch rider for the British Army during World War II. Back in America, African-American Bessie Stringfield made eight solo cross-country trips during the 1930s and 1940s and rode her motorcycle in the Deep South at a time when it wasn’t safe to do so. Dot Robinson, meanwhile, rode, and raced, in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. In fact, she is credited with opening the door or women in organized motorcycling competition. Following World War II, increasingly more women got involved in motorcycling. Margaret Wilson is one of those, and she has logged more than 550,000 miles on motorcycles, showing that women are just as passionate about the sport as men.

In the modern era, now-movie stuntwoman Debbie Evans is considered a pioneer in observed trials competition, a sport that calls for expertise on a narrow, marked, twisty maze of a course. She successfully com- peted in U.S. trials in the late 1970s. These are all women who have made significant contributions to motorcycling, and who have earned places in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, located on the AMA campus in Pickerington, Ohio. There are other women today who are also making their marks, such as Ash- ley Fiolek in motocross and Leslie Porterfield in land- speed record competition, who may, one day, earn their own spots in that hallowed Hall. Fiolek,18, began riding 50cc minicycles at age 7. In 2008, in her rookie season, she earned the No. 1 plate in the Women’s Motocross Association championship. And for 2009 she has earned a factory ride with the Honda team. What makes this young woman’s story especially remarkable is that she is deaf. Porterfield, 32, holds three land-speed records and is a member of the Bonneville 200-mph club. She was named the 2008 AMA Racing Female Rider of the Year. The number of women riders in America is growing daily, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. In 2003, an estimated 9.6 percent of the motorcycle own- ers in America were women. For 2008, that percentage was estimated at 12.4 percent. There are more women in motorcycling than ever before. But every woman, from the very first who slid onto the seat of a motorcycle to the Fioleks and Porter- fields of today, has contributed to the world of motorcycling.
