By Pamela A. Keene Have you adopted your chance to win great prizes, including an opportunity at $10,000? It’s not too late to adopt a yellow rubber duck – or more – to be entered in the 24th Annual Rubber Duck Derby to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier. Taking place on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, the event will see a record number of rubber ducks taking to the lake this year. The grand prize for the duck that reaches the finish line first is $10,000 cash. Other prizes include a diamond solitaire pendant or ring valued at $5,000, a $1,000 family fun package at Main Event, a toolkit worth $850, a golf package with a two-night stay at Legacy Lodge at Lanier Islands, plus others. “We’ll be releasing 24,000 little yellow rubber ducks this year, the most ever,” said Savannah Popham, marketing and communications director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier. “People will be able to adopt ducks at the event or add to their flock that day. We’re expecting a good

turnout and plenty of family fun.” In addition to the duck race at 2:30 p.m., the event features food trucks, a petting zoo, a bounce house and family activities. Acoustic guitarist/singer Jake Dupree will perform from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. “The Rubber Duck Derby is a fun and important event for our clubs,” she said. “It helps raise funds to support our clubs’ activities.” With five freestanding clubs and 20 school sites in Hall, Forsyth and Habersham counties, the organization serves more than 7,500 youth through club and community outreach programs. The organization is opening the Tommy & Chantal Bagwell Club in Forsyth in 2023. The breakdown of youth served is 6-11, 87 percent; 12-14 10 percent; 15-18 3 percent. Approximately 35 percent of youth are of Hispanic and Latino descent; 32 are Caucasian; 23 percent are Black/African American; 9 percent are multi-racial; and 1 percent are of Asian background. The club’s mission focuses on academic success, healthy lifestyles and character/citizenship. Programs throughout the

school year include after-school and sports. Academics, particularly STEM and STEAM learning, are emphasized with students showing improvement in both math and reading levels.

Featured Testimonial of the Month “Teresa and her team were absolute professionals and absolutely ‘in our corner’as sellers. They were great about protecting our time and energy throughout the processes of selling our home - from scheduling the pictures, throughout the showings, and then when negotiating with the buyers. Even though I'm sure Teresa and her team had multiple clients while she worked with us, she made us feel as though we were her only concern - she was responsive to our calls, questions, and concerns - always providing timely and thoughtful responses. Truthfully, I'm glad she was on our ‘side’ because she's a tenacious, formidable agent that made us feel as though she would've gone into "battle" on our behalf. It's rare to experience this type of customer care any more these days...as such it was a pleasure to work with Teresa and her team.” - Stephen W.

Client Testimonial “After an unsuccessful attempt to sell our home through another agency, we listed our home with Sheila Davis. She is very knowledgeable about Lake Lanier and its residential neighborhoods. She is an active member of the Lake Lanier Association which shows her dedication to lake living. Sheila, honestly and knowledgeably, answered our questions about selling price and other issues, not just giving answers she thought we wanted to hear. She was aggressive in helping us stage our house (we had already moved and taken most of the furnishings with us) and advertised extensively. She and her team were very comfortable with the special features of our house (pool, waterfall, etc.) and one of them was always on site to turn features on/off and to answer questions, but not to interfere with a potential buyer’s visit. Sheila was very patient and helpful as we nervously went through to contract and closing processes. We enjoyed working with the Sheila Davis Group and recommend them to others hoping to sell a home on or near Lake Lanier.” - P. Gracey

See something, say something: Report park vandalism around the lake By Pamela A. Keene It’s hard to believe that punching holes in cinderblock walls, ripping toilets off the walls and breaking porcelain sinks is someone’s idea of recreation, but that’s just what has happened repeatedly over the past six to eight months at Van Pugh North Park on Lake Lanier. The on-again, off-again vandalism at Van Pugh North threatens closure of the bathrooms at one of the most popular parks on the south end of the lake. Ultimately, the park itself may be closed to prevent further destruction of government property. “Due to health and safety concerns, if we have to close the restrooms, that will mean closing the park,” said Chris Arthur, recreation program manager with the Corps of Engineers. “Right now, we’ve been spending thousands of taxpayers’ money to clean up, repair and replace what has been destroyed.” Arthur said that the destruction has gone far beyond physical damage to the restrooms. “The vandals tore down the new life-jacket loaner station that was built recently by a local Eagle Scout,” he said. “They set a picnic table on fire, put paint

bombs in the restrooms and tampered with the water flow to facilities causing really large water bills.” Several individuals and groups have offered to assist with services, supplies and materials to replace and repair the property. “Right now, we’ve been fixing this damage so visitors to the lake

can continue to enjoy the park,” he said. “At some point, however, we can’t just keep doing this. We do appreciate the offers to assist, but it hasn’t come to that yet.” The incidents have been reported to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. And when the perpetrators have been caught, citations will be written and the

matter will most likely be referred to the Federal Magistrate Court. “It’s a federal offense to destroy government property,” Arthur said. The Corps has asked the public’s assistance to keep their eyes open and to report any activity or people who seem involved in suspicious actions around the lake,

particularly in the parks and campgrounds. “If you see something, say something,” he said. “And if you see someone in the act of destruction, call 911 and report it to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. With everyone working together, we hope we can put an end to this vandalism.”

Kayak/paddleboard kiosk comes to Gainesville and Lake Lanier By Pamela A. Keene When Kate Mattison became director of Gainesville Parks and Recreation in May 2019, she saw Lake Lanier and knew what she wanted to do for the city’s residents. “I took one look at the lake and was mesmerized,” said the former Ohio resident. “I thought, what are the possibilities for engaging people in the lake? And what could we do at the city to get them more involved?” After extensive research she found the answer: Bring selfservice kayak/paddleboard rentals to Longwood Park. “Boating can be an expensive hobby, and it can be a challenge to load up a kayak on the top of your car and take it some-

where to paddle for an hour or so,” she said. “By giving people easy and affordable access to kayaks and paddleboards right next to the lake, it makes enjoying the lake so much simpler.” After sending out a request for

The program is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week on a first-come, first-served basis. The minimal rental is one hour, but there is no time limit. Usage after one hour is changed in 15minute increments. “We wanted to make the process as simple and userfriendly as possible,” Mattison said. “We had our grand opening in late March and already we’re getting very positive feedback.” For more information, visit www.gainesville.org/kayakshack.

Shakleton, a tribute to toughness and survival About 20 years ago a friend invited a group of us to the New York Yacht Club for a preview of the film “Shackleton.” It included the outtakes and was narrated by the producer. The film was mesmerizing. We could imagine being on the ice as we watched our ship being crushed and all hope of rescue disappearing. One of the things I remember was the photographer who dove repeatedly into the frigid water to recover the photographic plates and film from the flooded compartment as the ship sunk. Another was that after Shackleton and five of his crew sailed the lifeboat almost a thousand miles to South Georgia Island, they landed on the wrong side of the island and had to climb over the mountains and glaciers to get to the whaling station on the other side where help was available. They did this in about 24 hours wearing the clothes that they had with them on the sail. More recently professional mountain climbers duplicated the trip wearing modern clothes and using mountaineering equipment and it took them almost twice as long. For me, the biggest achievement was that Shackleton kept all

While Shackleton and his crew ran from one side of the ship to the other unsuccessfully trying to rock their ship free of the ice, the resourceful captain of the exploration vessel used one of the ship’s cranes to lift a 40-ton fuel tank and swing it from one side, thus setting her free. Overcoming all of these setbacks, they still managed to scan hundreds of square miles of sea bed under the ice and, with only four days to go before they had to depart for home, they finally found her. She was only four miles from where Shackleton had said she would be! The hull was completely intact, and due to the depth and temperature of the water there are no wood-consum-

Summer means you can catch great fishing memories with kids Reservoir water temperatures are climbing deep into the 70s, largemouth bass have generally departed the shallows with the bedding processes over, crappie have taken residence under the brush filled deep water docks, around the bridge pilings, and what’s left of the standing trees out in the lakes and need to be caught at night under lights. Stripers are meandering the river channels and even if located, the bite only lasts a few minutes. The only area with any dependability for stripers exists upriver against the dam of the next upstream lake. It’s a trip for experienced fishermen only. What to do? Take a break from the major reservoirs and locate a few small ponds and take some children fishing for bream. When the water hits 75-plus, the bream fan out in the shallows, make disk shaped beds and are hungry and there for the taking. Unlike largemouth bass, bream will continue to feed even when bedding. You can keep a few for a tasty meal or two but generally, in my view this fishing is for the children. The bream are easily available for kids to catch over and over.

And when you return the bream to the lake the hooks are removed more easily without damaging the fish. Take plenty of different baits; red wigglers, crickets, Fisher’s Choice canned baits (crickets, grasshoppers, shrimp and grubs that will last until the next trip). Why so many? When you return a mama bream to the bed and she gets a little rest, putting a different bait in the bed will get her to bite again. The children will get to

North Georgia dodged a bullet last month Somehow, most of north Georgia managed to escape the onslaught of severe storms, tornadoes, and large hail last month. Middle and South Georgia is where the hammer came down. Violent storms producing multiple tornadoes did incredible damage. An EF 3 with 160 mile per hour winds tore a path of destruction through Bonaire in Houston County. A woman in her home was severely injured and died the next day. An EF 4 tornado with winds between 160 to 200 mph slammed Black Creek in Bryan County killing a woman in her home instantly. Our reporters were on the scenes and the video of the damage was astounding. I don’t know how more people did not get hurt or killed. The weather system that caused all this mayhem is quite common in Georgia during the spring and summer months. Have you ever heard of an MCS? The Mesoscale Convective System is a collection of thunderstorms that act as a system. An MCS can spread across an entire state and last more than 12 hours, as was the case in Georgia on April 4th. On radar one of these monsters might appear as a solid line, a broken line, or a

cluster of cells. The accompanying radar image shows the line “bowing Glenn outward.” That is a sigBurns nal of a powerful straight-line wind. In this image the winds were Lanier gusting to 70 mph. Outlook So how does an MCS form? MCSs are formed from a process known as upscale growth. This is basically when the rain cooled air from several storms join forces to create a larger cold pool. This cold pool spreads out along the ground and acts as a mini cold front, triggering new storms as it moves along. As daytime heating gets under way, scattered storms form. Each of them has an updraft and accompanying downdraft where rain cooled air rushes toward the ground. When these downdrafts hit the ground, they spread out. Given the close proximity of these storms, the downdrafts soon begin to join forces and they gradually form a larger pool of cold air known as “the cold pool.” This cold pool begins to move out across the surface. At the leading edge of the cold pool, new storms form as warm, unstable air is forced to rise. The MCS is now a machine. Heavy rain will move over the same areas over and over again, increasing the flooding threat. Large hail will often accompany the storms along with straight line winds of 60-80 mph. It’s now MCS season so keep an eye on the radar before you head out for that family day on the lake. The new 90-day outlook showing plenty of heat energy available for these storms with above average tempera-

Vessel Safety Checks: Get ready for the boating season This is the time of year that we are all thinking about getting our boats prepped for another season of fun. We all have our process that we go through with some of us meticulously putting together a list of items and others just winging it. There is cleaning to do, maintenance to do and maybe even a few upgrades to make. One of the most important things that we should remember is ensuring that our boats will provide us a safe experience. Boats are different from cars in that they require a lot more attention to safety features. Clearly, the main reason for these features is to reduce the chances of injury or loss of life and property. Many of them are also required by law and a failure to comply could result in a hefty fine. Sometimes, thinking about all of the safety requirements for boating can make your head swim. From life jackets, to fire extinguishers, visual distress signals and bilge blowers, it can be a bit confusing. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an expert assist you in making sure that you and your boat have the right safety equipment for the upcoming boating season. That’s ex-

Frank Taylor The Careful Captain

actly what you can have. The best part is that it won’t cost you anything and you can get an inspection on anything from a jet ski to a cruiser. There are two organizations in the Atlanta area that will come and inspect your vessel free of charge and let you know how you are doing in regards to your safety equipment. One of them is Atlanta’s Boating Club and the other is the Coast Guard Auxiliary. At your convenience, a trained inspector will come to your boat and perform a thorough inspection to ensure that it is in compliance with local and federal boating laws. The inspection will cover such items as follows: • Life preservers • Fire extinguishers • Navigation Lights

• Bilge systems • Visual distress signals • First Aid • Communication devices • Ground tackle The inspector will also cover optional safety equipment and be prepared to answer any questions you have regarding your vessel’s safety features. If your vessel is in compliance with all safety requirements, you will get a decal indicating that the vessel has been inspected and passed. This can have some advantages. Vessels that display this decal tend to draw less attention from law enforcement and some insurance companies may even provide a discount for vessels that have passed an annual safety inspection. So, what if your vessel does not pass inspection? First, it is important to realize that inspection results are not turned over to law enforcement or any other state or federal entities. Second, you will be provided with a list of items that need to be addressed in order to bring it into compliance. After changes have been made, you can schedule a re-inspection of your vessel at your conven-

ience. It truly is a win-win scenario for any boat owner. For more information on Vessel Safety Checks, check out the Atlanta’s Boating Club VSC site here: www.americasboatingclubatlanta.org/vessel-safety-check.

Opening day celebration at UYC

University Yacht Club celebrated Opening Day on April 2, an event that showcases several nautical traditions. The Empty Table, set for a guest, represents the friends and members who have “crossed the bar” and are no longer living; the club’s bell was rung to honor those members who had passed in 2021. The Atlanta Detachment of the US Coast Guard Pipe Band performed several songs throughout the program. New officers were recognized, and former commodores were present to be thanked for their continued service. New members were introduced. Flag raising, the blessing and commissioning of the club’s sail and power fleets preceded dinner.

By Pamela A. Keene Post-pandemic, choices for eating out are becoming a new normal. With a couple of restaurant expansions, new menu items and one change in ownership, eateries at Lake Lanier are more diverse and versatile than before. At Bald Ridge Marina, Smokey Q BBQ’s former partner is now full owner. Judson Holder bought out his business partner in the off season and has been making big changes. In addition to remodeling and redecorating, Smokey Qs will be adding breakfast and dinners on selected days. Right now, the restaurant is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., serving its trademark barbecue. Known for its full slabs of ribs sold by the pound and smoked chicken wings, Smokey Q is broadening its menu. “When we open for the season sometime in May, we are going to be open six days a week, serving lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday, lunch and dinner Thursday through Sunday, and adding graband-go breakfast on Saturday and Sunday,” he said. “Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches will be returning and hand-pattied burgers will be added.” Smokey Q has its liquor license and will be adding adult

Outdoor drama to bring Hardman Farm to life By Jane Harrison The ground that grew pumpkins, hid quartz-tipped arrows, and dusted up wagons will soon bear the set of the first outdoor drama at a Georgia Historic Site. The past of the Nacoochee Valley, at the headwaters of Lake Lanier, will come alive in early June through collaboration of a local playwright, Piedmont College Theatre Department, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and supporting cast of friends. The play, Valley Voices, will bring Hardman Farm Historic Site to life June 2-5 on the very grounds etched by the Chattahoochee River where natives built mounds, settlers rode in on wagon trains, and a former governor launched agricultural innovations. The setting, in a field behind the elegant 1869 Italianate farm mansion across from the iconic Nacoochee Indian Mound off State Route 75, has long intrigued tourists and history buffs. The grounds have footed travelers for thousands of years, from native American traders to mountain settlers on the Unicoi Turnpike between Dalton and Toccoa. The family of the last original owner/inhabitant donated the 173-acre farm for a state historic site in 1999. It is ripe for an outdoor drama. Historical setting Local author Emory Jones, who has written three other plays and seven books rooted in White County and the Nacoochee Valley, envisioned a play on the Hardman Farm grounds about a dozen years ago. He penned a script that retells the site’s rich history through colorful dialog between characters and symbolism. In estimated 50-minute performances, audiences seated in

lawn and camp chairs will meet principal characters whose stories took place beneath their feet. “There’s nothing like being in the space” where history actually unfolded, said Kathy Blandin, play director and head of the Piedmont College theatre department. “That’s what makes this outdoor drama so great, the experience of being in the place where this happened, where these people lived.” For the performance venue she chose a meadow behind the mansion just outside the corn crib where a gentle hill buffers noise from the state highway. She had to imagine how to stage entrances and exits on horseback, 17 characters, a black powdered rifle, a cantankerous Model A car, and fiddlers playing Appalachian tunes. She was also mindful of natural elements like sunlight and shade, wildlife, and potential rain drops. Todd Blandin, set designer and technical consultant, described the outdoor drama as a history lesson in disguise. The director’s husband said that audiences will see, hear, and smell the historic valley, plus feel the characters’ emotions. “Historical markers are great,” he said, but they cannot invoke the sensual impact of outdoor theatre.

Valley Voices Resound at Hardman Farm About the performance: Valley Voices is an outdoor drama that tells the story of the Nacoocheee Valley and Hardman Farm inhabitants. Audiences bring their own chairs to watch the play outside the historic mansion. Before the show, the cast will mingle with playgoers and musicians will pick Appalachian tunes. Opening act, Doc Johnson’s Traveling Miracle Medicine Show will set the stage for a look back at history. Food and refreshments will be available from a food truck. When: Evening performances June 2-4, gates open 5 p.m., opening act 6:45 p.m.; Sunday matinee June 5, gates open 11:45 a.m., opening act 1:15 p.m. Check website for potential schedule changes due to inclement weather. Where: Hardman Farm Historic Site, 143 Hwy. 17, Sautee Nacoochee. Tickets/information: $24.45, www.gastateparks.org/hardmanfarm.

Stage manager/production assistant Jonathan Furlow, third year Piedmont theatre major, said students are excited about being a part of the show. “All the pieces are coming together,” he said. Heavy on research Jones, Blandin and cast developed characters’ dialect, mannerisms, and costumes through dedicated research. Most of the non-student cast members have long delved into the valley’s history by volunteering in the The Friends of Hardman Farm organization. The Friends group has uncovered layers of the past with documents, state archives, artifacts, interviews with Hardman descendants, letters, clothing,

Jones currently lives near Yonah Mountain. Jones feels his script forms just the bare bones of the play. “Five percent of what makes a play is the playwright. The rest is the characters, cast, sets … ” Sarah Summers, the historic site’s event coordinator, said she is excited about “bringing the farm to life” in a history-making outdoor drama. She hopes it will become an annual event, adding to the many Hardman Farm activities that give visitors a feel for the land and the people who came before.

Safe Kids’ life jacket donation helps provide extra safety for youngsters at Lanier By Pamela A. Keene A donation of 180 children’s life jackets by Safe Kids of Northeast Georgia to Friends of Lake Lanier has made an impact on this year’s summer boating season. They will be used for the Corps of Engineers Life-Jacket Loaner stations in parks and campgrounds on Lake Lanier. “This generous donation will go a long way toward helping us keep our life-jacket loaner stations supplied and replenished this boating season,” said Tim Baker with Friends of Lake Lanier. “Safe Kids provided smaller non-adult sizes and these are the ones that we see the most usage and most often go missing.” The life jackets were delivered to Friends of Lake Lanier several weeks ago and have been installed at the Corps’ 20 stations. Many of the life-jacket loaner stations have been built by Eagle Scout candidates, including the most recent at Duckett Mill Campground. The two at Duckett Mill were constructed by Ryan Brown of Boy Scout Troop 356 in Roswell at Fellowship Christian School. The program is still accepting donations of life jackets to meet the demand this summer. “It’s a home run for our lake visitors, our organization and the Corps of Engineers to have this large a donation of new life jackets,” Baker said. “This donation, and other life-jacket donations that we receive, help us support our mission to promote water

safety in and around Lake Sidney Lanier.” As a program of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Safe Kids Northeast Georgia’s mission is to help reduce and prevent childhood injuries. The program works with community partners to promote advocacy for children’s safety and to raise public awareness. “This is an excellent way for us to support our water safety mission and reach people who use Lake Lanier and the Corps of Engineers’ parks,” said Elaina Lee, coalition coordinator of Safe Kids Northeast Georgia. “Partnerships in the community are vital to our success and knowing that this donation will help provide life jackets for children who will be enjoying the lake is what we’re all about.” Serving Hall and Barrow counties, Safe Kids focuses on children’s water safety, child passenger safety, fire safety, wheeled sports safety, home safety, sports and pedestrian safety. Its life jacket initiative furnishes upward of 400 life jackets in various venues, including Hall County Parks. “At this time of year, water safety is top of mind,” Lee said. “We urge parents to be especially mindful about their children anytime they’re around open water. Even if your child knows how to swim, having them wear a life jacket provides an extra layer of safety.” Safe Kids Northeast Georgia is funded from monies raised by the NGHS Marketplace each Novem-

How you can help Friends of Lake Lanier By volunteering three to five hours a week, members of the public can join in the work of Friends of Lake Lanier. “Because of our volunteer members, we are able to help expand the work of the Corps of Engineers and use funds raised locally to support their work on Lake Lanier,” said Tim Baker. “In addition to soliciting and collecting lifejackets from the community, volunteers can help with our on-going operations and projects. We are a young organization and want to increase our abilities to raise awareness, fundraise, and take on new projects the Corps would like us to do. “We can do so much more to provide services to the lake’s visitors if more people will volunteer their time. It’s a good way to participate in community service and get to know the Corps and its rangers.” Friends of Lake Lanier continues to accept life jacket donations at these locations: Bald Ridge Marina, Gainesville Marina, Hideaway Marina, University Yacht Club and the Lanier Project Management Office. Friends of Lake Lanier is a non-profit organization that assists the Corps of Engineers with Lake Lanier-specific projects, including the life-jacket loaner stations, and supporting the campgrounds and parks. For more information about Friends of Lake Lanier and their work, or to volunteer, visit www.friendsoflakelanier.org or its Facebook page: www.facebook.com/friendsoflakelanier.

Safe Boating Week, May 21-27: Are you for summer? By Pamela A. Keene During the week of May 2127, boaters, marinas and boat educators across the country are focusing on ways to take the stress out of summer. On Lake Lanier, members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and America’s Boating Club are gearing up for the summer season, providing boating safety classes, vessel safety checks and the importance of life jackets as part of National Safe Boating Week. “Our goal is to encourage boaters to think about safety first,” said Dan Vaccaro, public affairs officer with USCGA Flotilla 29. “Sometimes safety seems to be the last thing people think about when they go boating. They’re excited to get out on the water for the season but putting boat safety first can make the summer more fun.” Vaccaro recommends that

when boaters and their guests first board their vessel, they do a 3- to 5-minute safety briefing. “Pointing out where the life jackets are kept, making sure that youngsters are wearing them, where the fire extinguisher is and other topics help set the tone for a safe boating experience,” he said. “It’s good to get in the habit of this safety review every time you

go boating.” Both organizations offer free vessel safety checks to ensure that boaters have the required safety equipment and documentation on board. The checks are free and can be conducted in or out of the water. To begin the week, boaters, swimmers and anglers are asked to “Wear Your Life Jacket To Work Day” on May 20. “This is an awesome conversation starter with your coworkers and friends,” said T.J. Convery, boating instructor with America’s Boating Club Atlanta. “You can tell them how much you enjoy boating and even relay some fun stories. “In case you didn’t know it, in Georgia children under the age of 13 are required to wear an appropriately sized personal flotation device on a moving vessel,” he See Safe Boating, page 38

Boating safety tips for kids and parents Even if your child knows how to swim, Georgia law requires that all children aged 12 and under wear life jackets while on a moving boat. Here are some tips to help parents and kids be safer on open water: • Wear a US Coast Guard-approved properly fitted life jacket. • Babies and infants should not travel on a boat until they are

the appropriate weight to wear an approved personal flotation device, according to the US Coast Guard. • Keep little kids warm because they are more susceptible to hypothermia. • Don’t rely on swimming aids, such as water wings or noodles, as replacements for life jackets. • Teach your kids the difference between open water and pools. • Actively supervise kids in and

around open water. • More children between the ages of 1-4 die from drowning than any other cause of death except birth defects. • Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury or death after motorvehicle crashes for children ages 1-14. Can’t grow grass? Try groundcovers instead Ground cover plants take their work laying down. Whether they’re providing finishing touches on a landscape design, covering bare spots too shady for lawn grasses or minimizing erosion, these low-growing wonders are hard workers that are versatile and can add interest to a home landscape. Ground covers can add layers and texture to your landscape and increase the visual appeal of your property. Make your choices based on the environment: is it sunny or shaded, dry or more wet, and will it be in a high-traffic area or out of the main portion of your yard? Selections are varied and can be used in sun or shade settings. Creeping phlox loves sunny spots; sturdy dwarf mondo grass can cover a shady area with a lush dark-green carpet. Some ground covers flower; others are foliage only, but no matter what you choose, you’ll be rewarded with a fresh take on those gaping holes in your landscape. Outsmarting shade’s bare spots Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda and zoysia, need at least six hours of full sun to thrive.

Pamela A. Keene Curb Appeal

n MORE INFO: Email: pam@pamelakeene.com Popular with homebuilders, Bermuda is typically installed as sod, no matter what the light conditions. Zoysia can be more expensive, but some of the newer varieties can handle a bit of shade during the day. Using the cool-season fescue creates a showy, lush lawn in the spring, but unless it’s watered regularly and consistently mowed to the correct height of between 2 to 3 inches – and a half-inch longer in drier weather – it will get patchy and fade to brown in the heat of summer. Good choices for shade-loving ground covers include purpleflowered ajuga/also called bugleweed, mondo grass, monkey

grass, periwinkle-blossomed vinca minor, Asiatic jasmine and maidenhair ferns. Part-shade and sunny choices In part shade to full sun, creeping Jenny’s coin-shaped leaves and bright lime-green can be an accent that’s suitable for foot traffic. Its trailing growth habit means it spreads more quickly. Creeping phlox creates a colorful splash in early spring with its white, purple, blue or pink blossoms. However, once it blooms, it’s not particularly attractive, so it’s better to plant it along a bank or a wall. Stonecrop and creeping sedums range in colors from bright green to deep rust. They will reliably spread and are fairly durable. For a troubling clay slope, low-growing junipers that spread will do the trick over time. While not as fast-growing as other ground covers, these junipers are deer-resistant, but may need periodic weeding. If so, be sure and wear boots, because they provide good cover for reptiles; gloves are mandatory because junipers are naturally prickly. Areas with high foot traffic may do well with a combination

of stepping stones or pavers and a ground cover planted between. For added interest, use ground covers in between pavers or stepping stones, or at the edge of sidewalks and driveways. Groundcovers can be a home gardener’s best friend with many benefits. Check out options at area nurseries and box retailers. With the right choices, you can cure your landscape’s bare spots and erosion and make it look effortless. PHOTO BY PAMELA A. KEENE Pamela A. Ajuga ground cover in bloom. South Hall Rotary Club encourages safe swimming with new signage By Pamela A. Keene The tragic death of 2-year-old son Justus Williams three years ago was the catalyst for a new approach for to inform the public about the dangers of E. coli in Lake Lanier, thanks to South Hall Rotary and Hall County Parks and Recreation. On May 17, 2019, Jeff and Jess Williams had taken their three sons to Don Carter State Park for a family swim. Eight or 9 days later, 2-year-old Justus became ill with symptoms similar to a stomach bug. Following several trips to doctors, including to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, young Justus was gone, the cause a mystery. “It would be more than two weeks later before we learned the

cause of his passing,” said Jeff, a Gainesville native and business development manager for Conditioned Air Systems. “When I saw an article in the paper that there were high E. coli numbers at a park upstream from River Forks, I contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention what had been investigating our case. Within a few days, we learned that the cause was a rare type of E. coli that is especially dangerous to children under age 4. “I’ve lived up here all my life and I hadn’t realized the dangers of E. coli until this happened,” he said. “Since then we have learned so much, including that E. coli is much higher immediately after it rains and that there are groups testing regularly and posting test

results.” Williams’ fellow members of South Hall Rotary have initiated a program to help communicate a message of safety and water quality at Hall County Parks and marinas. Working with the CDC and Hall County, the club has created signage with “Share the Fun, Not the Germs” to offer tips and information about possible water quality issues in Lanier. The signage is both in English and Spanish. Those tips include: • Avoid swallowing the water. • Completely cover cuts with waterproof bandages. • Do not swim if you have diarrhea. • Take kids on bathroom breaks. The signs also warn that: • Cloudy water can mean more germs. • Heavy rain can pick up human and animal waste, bringing germs into the water. • The presence of wildlife, like geese, can mean increased bacteria. If your body’s ability to fight germs is affected by a health problem or medicines, check with your doctor before swimming. Additionally, the back of each sign will have a QR Code that

links directly to current water quality and bacteria level reports. The first sign was installed at River Forks in April; others in line for signage include Laurel Park, Cherokee Bluffs Park, Williams Mill Greenspace, Aqualand Marina and Sunrise Cove Marina. Discussions are under way with sister Rotary Clubs, governmental bodies and other partners around the lake to get these signs installed as well. South Hall Rotary Club has partnered with Hall County gov-

ernment, Hall County Parks and Recreation, Lake Lanier Association, Chattahoochee River Keepers and others for this project. “Our family is still affected by what happened to Justus,” Williams said, “but knowing that this signage and increased awareness will make sure that other parents don’t have to walk in our shoes may save a life.” For more information about South Hall Rotary and how you can help with this project, visit www.shrotary.org.

Things to consider for a partial kitchen remodel

When it comes to updating your kitchen, not everyone has the budget (or the time or patience) for a full remodel. However, there are ways to upgrade your kitchen without going through a full gut and construction project. Ways to not only make your kitchen look better, but ways to make it more functional, too. First, is to update a kitchen that looks dated. Different things like cabinet style, color, countertops, or backsplash can all age a kitchen. If the look of the cabinets is the main problem but they’re in good shape structurally, then you have the option to refinish them. If they are solid wood, you might have the option to re-stain them; however, that is typically a laborintensive (and expensive) process. The best bang for your buck would be to paint them. Painting your cabinets gives you near endless options of colors to choose from and can completely transform the look of your space. The next problem area might be the countertops. Laminate and solid surface options, like Corian, are mostly out now, and stone is in. Granite prices are typically lower than Corian now and offer a more natural, updated look. The variety of colors and styles will

nMORE INFO: tracytesmerremodeling.com give you options while giving you a surface that will hold up better to heat, spills, and dings. If you want something that is even more durable, then quartz is a great option. This is a more expensive choice, but if your kitchen is not oversized, then the price per square foot difference might not be a huge jump and may be worth the upgrade to a material that’s virtually maintenance-free. When replacing your countertops, it’s a great time to also replace your sink and sink faucet. If you’re going from laminate to stone tops, I highly recommend switching to an undermount sink. You’ll eliminate the dreaded lip around your sink that sits on the countertop and is so difficult to keep clean. There are lots of undermount sink options out there,

too. Ones with split bowls, one large bowl, partial divides, and ones that come with accessories like strainers and cutting boards. Depending on how much prepping and cooking you do, you can choose the right sink to fit your specific needs. Sink faucets also come in a variety of styles and finishes. Some even have the option of a touch feature for when you’re working with raw meat or other messes and don’t want to spread the germs. Some other minor changes that you could take on yourself without having to make changes to your cabinets or countertops would be to update your backsplash tile, change out cabinet hardware, and of course, paint the walls. Changing out backsplash tile is best left to a professional, unless you are a DIY-er who has some experience working with tile, of course. But changing out hardware or painting is something almost any homeowner can do on their own. When changing out hardware, you can even look at options like slow-close hinges to give your kitchen a high-end feel with minimal cost. When it comes to upgrading the functionality in an existing kitchen, there are several things

that I often suggest. In standard lower cabinets, we all know how difficult it can be to bend down and get those items that have fallen to the back void of the cabinet. Citrus County, Fla. offers tasty delights and unique nature After a seven-hour drive from Atlanta and a restful night’s sleep at the comfortable and clean Central Motel (www.centralmotel. com) in Inverness, Fla., I was starving! Less than 100 yards from my room, my taste buds came alive with a special omelette at Cinnamon Sticks (www.cinnamon-sticks.com), which is the top rated restaurant in Inverness on Trip Advisor as well as a local favorite! Following that great breakfast, Yogi (my service dog) and I started the morning on the front seat of an airboat with a big propeller powered by a 450 horse Within minutes, we were blasting our way through tiny watery trails, over expanses of lily pads and through beautiful stands of cypress trees at nearly 40 mph! Though we saw many alligators, raptors and wading birds, the highlight of this exciting trip was finding a mating pair of Sand Hill Cranes with two youngsters and another crane nest with two unhatched eggs! All American Airboat Tours (www.allamericanairboattours.co m) in Inverness had taken us on an adventure of a lifetime through the back waters of the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes and the sawgrass swamps to experience native Florida wildlife in all their natural splendor. This trip is a must for visitors to this area! Within walking distance of the airboat ramp is a fabulous place to experience great local food in an old Florida atmosphere! The Cove Pub and Grub (www.thecovepubandgrub.com) offers a unique setting right along the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes. It is popular with locals for boat-up dining, has great hamburgers and a homemade seafood chowder that is unforgettable! While in Inverness, a great place to spend a few hours is the

The par 72 course has water coming into play on seven of the 18 holes. The greens are fast and sloping. It’s a fun place to play! The main reason many tourists visit the Gulf side of Citrus County is to see and experience the manatees. The absolute best place to do that is by making the short drive to Crystal River and exploring the Three Sisters Springs (www.threesistersspringsvisitor.org) which is the crown jewel of the 70 springs of Kings Bay. This secluded one-acre spring is part of the 57-acre Three Sisters Springs Refuge that was saved from development in 2010. The Refuge, owned by the City of Crystal River and managed by the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, opened to the public in 2015 and is one of the most important springs manatees in Florida use to survive the winter months. A great number of interesting species of fresh and saltwater fish still congregate in the natural spring bowl that now has a unique underwater structure called the Underwater Observatory, which allows visitors to “walk underwater” beneath the spring’s surface to watch fish and manatees swim about. The park also features a variety of captive animals such as alligators, black bears, red wolf, Key deer, wading birds, a Florida Panther and the oldest hippopotamus in captivity. No trip to Homosassa would be complete without seeing Monkey Island in the Homosassa River from the comfort of the Florida Cracker Monkey Bar, which is a part of the Florida Cracker Riverside Resort (www.floridacrackerriversideresort.com). This unique outdoor watering hole and cantina has been an attraction since the 1960s, and provides fantastic food and drinks plus a commanding view of the Homosassa River, Monkey Island and the festive river life of Old Homosassa!

Growing young sailors on Lake Lanier Young people starting at age 8 have several opportunities to learn to sail this summer on Lake Lanier. Two groups, Lake Lanier Sailing Club and University Yacht Club Maritime Foundation are offering classroom and on-the-water multi-day sessions in June. “We like to start young students on Optis so that they can master basic sailing skills,” said Susan Reddaway, Junior Sailing director with the University Yacht Club/UYC Maritime Foundation Program. “Youth can sail Optis for several years, but often our students come back in subsequent years to learn to sail on BICs, Lasers, Sunfish and C420s.” Reddaway’s sister-in-law Carol Red-

daway is Junior Program Director at Lake Lanier Sailing Club. “Our three weeks of junior summer sessions are quickly filling up, but there are limited spaces available for non-member youth between the ages of 8 and 16,” said Carol Reddaway. “They may be learning on Optis or C420s if they are beginners. We hope that people will register early to have a chance to participate.” Both programs are open to a limited number of non-member youth. To register for LLSC, visit www.llsc.com/summer-camps.
