After hearing the news that Orlando fashion stylist Melanie Pace was pregnant, we knew we had to feature her in this issue's fashion article. It was so exciting when she agreed — and partnered with local photographer (and fellow mom-preneur) Vanessa Boy to produce this issue's cover photo and Fashion Mama story on page 24. Oh, Fudge! 10 Reasons Why the Tooth Fairy Didn't Come Last Night Words by Katy M. Clark

Just in case the Tooth Fairy forgets to come, this list of reasons may come in handy!

It glistened in the soft morning light, the single tear that fell from my 8-year-old daughter’s eye as she stood in our bedroom doorway. “Mommy, she didn’t come!” she breathed despondently. Then that single tear turned into a torrent. Oh, fudge... The Tooth Fairy didn’t come last night! “Uh,” I stammered in reply, elbowing my husband awake. “What happened?” he mumbled. “The Tooth Fairy didn’t come last night,” I replied. “Oh, fudge,” he said. Only he didn’t say fudge. We sprang out of bed, soothing our daughter (and each other) with hugs and reassuring words. There HAD to be a good reason she didn’t come, we told our daughter. 10 Reasons Why the Tooth Fairy Didn't Come Last Night: 1 The dew was too heavy. Her wings got wet, and she couldn’t fly. 2 The Tooth Fairy was on vacation, and the substitute Tooth Fairy didn’t know what she was doing. 3 She couldn’t get to your pillow due to your messy room. 4 Too much traffic. She’ll leave earlier tonight! 5 She was sick. 6 Spreadsheet error. Your tooth was projected to come out on Friday, so she wasn’t ready when it came out on Monday. 7 The Tooth Fairy likes snacks. Leave one out tonight, and she’ll probably come. 8 Oh, look, she dropped the money on the floor over there! She must have wanted you to keep your tooth as a souvenir.

We got the inside scoop from the Tooth Fairy's Tool Kit: Tooth fairy bags, stamps, letters, certificates and more! Check it out online at playgroundmagazine.com/toothfairys-tool-kit.

9 You probably woke up and scared her away, even if you don’t remember doing that. 10 She ran out of money and will be back tonight. She’s a tiny fairy, so she can only carry so much. My daughter seemed to calm down after she spent the day listening to our reasons why the Tooth Fairy did not come. All was made right with the world the following the morning when, hallelujah, the Tooth Fairy DID come. 12 PLAYGROUND Apr / May 2019

Handmade Neverland Nursery A Subtle and Modern Twist on a Classic Theme Words by Amy Nielsen | Photos by Jessica Friend

Alexandra and Ariel Rolon could not have predicted the time their son, Gabriel, would be born, but they clearly picked the right nursery theme. In the movie Peter Pan, Peter and the Darling children fly through the London sky and land on the minute hand of Big Ben. Under their weight, the hand drops from 8:04 to 8:15 p.m., the exact time Gabriel Rolon was born. When the Rolons designed their third child's Peter Pan-inspired nursery, they knew they wanted a subtle and timeless look. To accomplish this modern take on a classic theme, they chose a light, neutral color palette and added personal, handcrafted touches throughout the space. This creative couple worked together to make the signpost that features locations from the story. They added three notches to each sign to represent the three Rolon children: big sisters Jasmin and Leena and baby brother Gabriel. The couple also made the floating shelf, which features a lantern repurposed from their wedding. Alexandra added handmade silhouettes to the lantern and to a clock that once hung in Ariel’s childhood home. A crocheted alligator, vial of pixie dust, Peter Pan hat and replica of the book add whimsical flair to the space. The rustic backdrop to the crib was once headboard when the room functioned as a guest room. The couple liked the way it complemented other nautical nuances throughout the space. The banner above the crib, handmade by Alexandra, complements the arrows in the bedding. The stripes in the window valance and toy bin were inspired by the stripes worn by characters in the story. The light furniture stands out against a backdrop of cool gray walls framed by bold gray trim. The result is a serene and peaceful space that will transition effortlessly as Gabriel grows older, although as Peter Pan would say, “Even though you want to try to, never grow up!”

LOVE Potty training your little one can be tough, but these adorable potty books can help.

bookbuzz Words by Viviana Valencia-Serrano, Community Relations Assistant Manager, Orange County Library System

It’s no secret that potty training can be challenging, but the Orange County Library System (OCLS) can help with books designed to teach your little one all about the potty and how to use it. Borrow these books from your local OCLS branch. Visit ocls.info to find a branch near you. > Ages 2-6 Everybody Poops by Taro Gomi This oldie but goodie is hilariously honest about the byproducts of digestion. The story describes the whole process — from when something goes in to when something comes out — in all walks of life. From the smallest caterpillar to the largest elephant, children will be fascinated to learn that we all poop, and potty training is just a matter of learning to poop in the right place.

Peep and Egg: I’m Not Using the Potty by Laura Gehl Peep is excited to teach Egg how to use the potty, but Egg is afraid and gives all sorts of excuses. This book will help little ones understand the potty and confront their fears (like the potty being “too slippery” or “too loud”).

Goldilocks and the Just Right Potty by Leigh Hodgkinson Everyone has heard of Goldilocks and the three bears, but did you know Goldilocks also has to use the potty? One day, Goldilocks decides she is done with diapers and needs “big girl” underpants and a potty. And it can’t be any potty; it has to be just right. This light-hearted tale will help little ones feel like they can find the “just right” potty too.

Rae’s New Sunshine Sondra “Rae” Valentino, a popular radio personality on iHeartRadio’s Johnny’s House, beams about transitioning into parenthood. Words by Amy Nielsen | Photos by Love Is Me Photography

As a new parent, waking up at 3 a.m. to feed and change a hungry baby is nothing unusual. But waking up at 3 a.m. to feed and change two hungry babies before leaving the house for work by 4 a.m.? That’s another story... Welcome to the life of radio personality Sondra Rae from Johnny’s House at 106.7. Most days begin this way for Sondra Rae and her wife, Missy, who recently became parents to Siena and Leonardo. THE BACKSTORY When Sondra Rae and Missy met through mutual friends in 2011, the instant connection was something neither could deny. It wasn't long before the couple realized they wanted this relationship to be their last. In 2015, Missy surprised Sondra Rae with a picture-perfect Disney World proposal. Sondra Rae, of course, said yes. They were married in late 2016 at Mission Inn in Clermont, which offered a Europeanthemed vibe that the couple adored. After a several years together, a fairy-tale wedding, an amazing honeymoon in Italy and spending parts of the next year traveling, these two were ready to start a family.

DECISIONS Sondra Rae and Missy both knew they wanted to be parents. Being a same-sex couple meant this would involve challenges and choices. They weren’t sure what their pathway to parenthood would look like, but one thing was clear: they were both committed to making it happen. Ready to explore their options, the couple contacted Advanced Reproductive Specialists in Orlando (advancedreproductivespecialists.com) to discuss fertility treatments such as IUI (intrauterine insemination) and IVF (in vitro fertilization). After much contemplation, Sondra Rae and Missy elected to try IUI. They decided that Sondra Rae would undergo the procedure. IUI AND PREGNANCY After several months of medical tests, Sondra Rae got the all-clear to begin the IUI process. Her days were often filled with challenging yet exciting doctor visits, medications, shots and tests. She and Missy also needed to choose a sperm donor. They originally chose a donor from Fairfax Cyrobank in Virginia. Missy is from Fairfax, so they felt the choice had a meaningful connection. However, a blood test showed that Sondra Rae and the donor were incompatible, so the process of poring over multiple donor profiles began again. This time they, chose a donor from Seattle Sperm Bank. When it was time for the IUI procedure. Sondra Rae felt excited and nervous. As always, Missy was supportive and encouraging. Following the procedure, the anxious couple waited two weeks for the results. Unfortunately, the procedure was unsuccessful. This was tough news, but Sondra Rae and Missy remained optimistic and decided to try a second round of IUI. Because of the failed first attempt, the fertility doctors adjusted the treatment plan. This time, the IUI procedure was a success. In addition to a positive pregnancy test, the doctor also had some other news. Sondra Rae’s HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) numbers were high, which can mean the mother is carrying twins. Although they knew the probability of twins was increased with IUI, Sondra Rae and Missy were still shocked when it was confirmed that they were indeed expecting twins. But Sondra Rae said that initial shock quickly turned to gratitude. They knew caring for twins would be challenging, but they felt so fortunate.

Sondra Rae and Missy wanted their gender reveal to be extra special, so they surprised their family and friends by hosting this important moment a ICON Orlando 360 (iconorlando.com). Guests waited anxiously as the observation wheel’s colors changed first to blue and then to pink — a boy and a girl!

RAE'S NEW SUNSHINE

CHILDBIRTH AND NICU On September 20, 2018, Sondra Rae was 33 weeks and 5 days pregnant. When she returned home from work that morning, she felt something was off. A scare in the second trimester had kept her on high alert. Half joking, she texted Missy that she felt like the babies were coming that day. In fact, Sondra Rae and Missy had just packed their hospital bags the night before. It turns out Sondra Rae was right; mother’s intuition is real! The babies were born several hours later by emergency C-section at The Baby Place at AdventHealth for Women in Orlando. Siena was born first, and the delivery room was suddenly filled with the sweet and innocent cry of new life. However, when Leonardo was born, he was alarmingly silent. The pediatric team quickly started him on oxygen. To Sondra Rae and Missy’s relief, Leonardo’s cry soon followed. Because the babies were premature, they were whisked off to AdventHealth for Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with Missy following close behind. Sondra Rae felt alone and scared. Sensing her uneasiness, one of her doctors played a Jimmy Buffet tune, and a nurse illuminated a beach scene on the ceiling above her. As she laid in the delivery room, the uplifting sights and sounds of an island paradise gave her hope that everything was going to be okay. Siena spent 13 days in the NICU, and Leonardo spent 15. It was heartbreaking for Sondra Rae and Missy to leave the hospital without their babies. However, the NICU nurses were available 24/7, and the new parents were encouraged to call around the clock for updates. Sondra Rae and Missy spent up to 10 hours per day at the hospital during the twins’ stay. To help families of NICU babies cope, the hospital offered art classes. Sondra Rae and Missy made items such as personalized jewelry and burp cloths for Siena and Leonardo, which helped them feel connected. They celebrated each milestone the twins reached until their babies were finally ready to come home. 20 PLAYGROUND Apr / May 2019

RAE'S NEW SUNSHINE

To prepare their beloved fur baby, Marlo, for the twins’ arrival, Sondra Rae and Missy hired Kim Bissing, a certified personal dog trainer with Beyond the Leash (beyondtheleashdogtraining.com). Kim recommends beginning this process early to help make the transition easier on the family pet. Marlo learned verbal commands, such as “Leave it” (which instructs Marlo to ignore baby items such as dropped pacifiers or baby bottles) and “Easy” (which tells Marlo it’s OK to explore gently). Kim also recommended exposing Marlo to scents such as baby blankets and diapers. Finally, she instructed the couple to hold a lifelike doll while playing audio clips of a baby crying to help Marlo become accustomed to sharing his mamas with the new babies.

MAKING IT WORK

Visit sondrarae.com for YouTube videos, blog posts and more. Listen to Sondra Rae each weekday morning on Johnny’s House at 106.7 from 6 a.m.– 10 a.m. or listen to podcasts at iHeartRadio. Follow Sondra Rae on Instagram @sondrarae.

Like all new parents, Sondra Rae and Missy spent the first few weeks trying to figure things out. When the twins initially came home, both parents would wake up at night to do feedings and diaper changes. Then they began to stagger the feedings so each baby would eat at a different time. Neither parent was getting much sleep, and they each began to experience severe fatigue. Eventually, Sondra Rae and Missy settled into a routine where they would rotate feeding and changing both babies while the other parent slept. They also used the Twin Z Pillow, which Sondra Rae says is a must-have. It’s a single pillow designed to angle both babies just the right way to be fed at the same time — a total game-changer! For this couple, working together to find solutions is one of their greatest strengths. So how do the new parents split up the childrearing responsibilities? Sondra Rae laughed as she replied, “Missy says I have the mom sway.” If one of the twins is fussy, she snuggles the baby closely and sways. “Missy has the magic when it comes to burping the babies,” she says. Sondra Rae isn't sure how, but Missy can get the babies to burp every time. Although each parent has a few specialties, for the most part, this couple splits their parenting duties 50/50, each respectful and supportive of the other. Sondra Rae shared that even though she loves being a mother, it hasn’t always been easy. She struggled with post-partum depression, but Missy was quick to recognize this and step in to make sure Sondra Rae got the help she needed. She said that Missy has been there every step of the way, supporting her through the IUI process, pregnancy, childbirth and now in this wonderful new world of parenting that they are beyond ecstatic to share.

Shop This Look: Dress, $158, cape, $395, and headband, $15 from Free People; Marc Fisher boots (stylist’s own); Jewelry (stylist’s own); Lana necklace, $775 available at Neiman Marcus; Vanessa Mooney earrings, $69 available at vanessamooney.com

Bohemian Wrap-sody Maxi Style Melanie's Styling Tip: Maxi dresses were a lifesaver during my third trimester. I wasn’t a huge fan of my legs, so it was an easy way for me to feel comfortable and look pulled together at the same time. Statement sunglasses are always an easy way to funk up any outfit!

Shop This Look: Maxi dress, $69 from Zara; Alexander McQueen shoes, $490 available at Neiman Marcus; Raen sunglasses, $150 available at Dear Jane, Winter Park; Billabong jacket, $89 available at Mall at Millenia; Earrings, $15 from Zara; Sandro scarf, $62.50 available at Bloomingdale’s; Hat, $15 from Forever 21; Orlando Apolis Bag, $68 available at Jacq & Jack, Lake Nona Town Center 27 PLAYGROUND PLAYGROUND Apr Apr // May May 2019 2019 27

Polka Dot Pretty Melanie's Styling Tip: Slip dresses from Zara are another favorite of mine. If I could have had this dress in every color, I would have bought them all. This dress hugs my body in all the right places and has adjustable straps. To accessorize, I recommend having lots of hats and sneakers onhand that you can rotate with different outfits.

Shop This Look: Dress, $69 from Zara; Current Elliott jacket, $328 available at Neiman Marcus; Prada sneakers, $750 available at Neiman Marcus; Necklace from Dora Mae Melanie Pace Collection (stylist's own); Fendi sunglasses, $545 available at Neiman Marcus; Jimmy Choo purse, $1325 available at Mall at Millenia; Hat, $10 from Urban Outfitters 28 PLAYGROUND Mar / Apr 2018

Jumpsuit, Please Melanie's Styling Tip: Jumpsuits were my go-to outfit before pregnancy. The key to transitioning that look into pregnancy is making sure the jumpsuit is quick and easy to put on and take off! I added a sweater, but adding a maternity tank top with a little jacket is another way to style this look on warmer days. A statement earring can jazz up a simple outfit without adding layers.

Shop This Look: BCBGeneration jumpsuit, $118 available at Bloomingdales; Bag, $69.90 from Zara; Shoes ASOS (stylist’s own); Gucci sunglasses, $420 available at Mall at Millenia; Oscar de la Renta earrings, $186 available at Neiman Marcus; Maje top, $225 available at Bloomingdale’s 29 PLAYGROUND Mar / Apr 2018

Baby Bump Pride Melanie's Styling Tip: For me, tight dresses worked better than wearing anything baggy. I loved showing off my baby bump! Dress it up with a heel or boot or dress it down with a sneaker. Add a jean jacket, leather jacket or a kimono to finish the look.

Shop This Look: Faithfull The Brand smocked dress, $219 available at Anthropologie; Veronica Beard jean jacket, $450 available at Neiman Marcus; Earrings, $15 from Zara; Lana necklace, $775 available at Neiman Marcus; Initial necklace, $14 from Amazon; Dior shoes, $890 available at Neiman Marcus; Vintage rings (stylist’s own); Sunglasses, $25 from Free People; YSL bag, $1750 available at Neiman Marcus

LOVE

"A lot of women are waiting to have children until they are much older. Their parents are older or live in other parts of the country," says Marshall, who in addition to her work as a birth and postpartum doula, is a facilitator for a pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety support group. "With [the risk of] postpartum depression, it's so important for women not to be isolated."

Bringing Home Baby: Can a Postpartum Doula Help? Many of today's new parents find themselves without the village of support that they have historically relied on when bringing home a new baby. Some modern moms are turning to postpartum doulas to help them adjust to life with a newborn. Words by Christa Melnyk Hines Corey Engmann never considered hiring a postpartum doula until she learned she was expecting twins. Feeling overwhelmed and worried about how she would handle twin babies, along with the pressing needs of her 2-year-old, she turned to Teresa Marshall, a certified birth and postpartum doula, to help her after her twins arrived. For four months after the birth of the twins, Marshall spent five nights a week at Engmann's home providing support, encouragement and help. Her assistance enabled Engmann to get the sleep she needed to recover from a physically demanding pregnancy. "I can easily say that hiring Teresa was the best thing I have ever done for myself and our family," Engmann says. "During the day I could be present, loving and enjoying all three of my children. It wasn't the endless cycle of fatigue and frustration as it sometimes was during the first few months with my first child." What is a postpartum doula? The first six weeks after a newborn arrives can be a mixture of happiness and anxiety as the family settles into a new routine. Many of today's new mothers lack the support network that generations of mothers have relied on in the past. Close family and friends are busy with their own responsibilities, and partners often must return to work within days. A postpartum doula can provide valuable experience and support.

The support of a postpartum doula can be especially helpful to mothers who: • have a history of depression or postpartum depression; • don't have close friends and family nearby to help; • are expecting multiples; or • have other little ones demanding attention. "I am convinced that Teresa saved my life. As most moms have felt at one time or another, I was often wondering and questioning if what I was doing was the right thing for my children — and with twins, the responsibility is so unbelievably overwhelming," Engmann says. Mothering the mother. A mom who spends hours alone with her baby can easily spiral into emotional and physical exhaustion, which can put her at greater risk for postpartum anxiety or depression. During this challenging transition period (often called the fourth trimester), a postpartum doula can provide calm reassurance and support to a new mama and her family. "When moms feel supported at home, and they are getting what they need, the rates of postpartum depression are reduced," says Kate Kripke, LCSW, an expert in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and contributing writer for PostPartumProgress.com. "There is a lot to be said about the role the postpartum doula plays in simply mothering the mother after she gives birth that can be incredibly preventative for lots of women." In addition to helping to care for the baby, postpartum doulas often help with light housework, errands, cooking, crowd control and caring for siblings. Many are also trained to recognize the signs of postpartum depression and provide resources to the moms they support. Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two boys. Christa is the author of Confidently Connected: A Mom's Guide to a Satisfying Social Life.
