Publisher's Note Heather Reneau and family at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in North Carolina — our go-to summer retreat.

Summer: Hair Wraps, Flip Flops & Fireworks What comes to mind when you think of summer? My thoughts drift to hair wraps (my daughter is obsessed), flip flops (I'm obsessed) and fireworks (the hubs and my son are obsessed). The word also brings up anticipation of family travel and hometown exploration. For some of us, it also brings the fear of having to keep the kids occupied in addition to our usual responsibilities. Fear not, this issue brings you summer camp opportunities, travel destinations and other tips to fill your hot summer days with memory-making adventures. But don't go overboard on the planning. I prefer to have a few things mapped out while leaving plenty of free time to allow the serendipity of life to sprinkle in. Playing in the rain, making concoctions in the kitchen, making forts in the living room and having painting parties on the back porch are also just as important as camps, play dates and vacations. There are plenty of things to celebrate over summer break: Father's Day, the Summer Solstice (longest day of the year), July 4 and probably a few summer birthdays... Whichever way you choose to PLAY, be sure to tag us in the photos of the fun things you're doing in Orlando and beyond @PLAYorlando.

Ty has special needs, and having his little sister around helped with his development in ways their parents couldn't have imagined. Kelly found it difficult to find fun places to take a baby and a child with disabilities. She also missed spending time with other adults and meeting new people. So, Kelly and her family set out to create a safe environment for children of all ability levels to play. Millie Moo's was designed primarily for younger children (under age 7) and includes several different play areas and a café. milliemoosorlando.com EAT IT:

LIVE Orange County Library’s Summer Reading Program:

Libraries Rock

It’s time to rock the library! Beginning June 2, all 16 library locations will host events, classes, camps and concerts that will keep kids engaged in fun, educational activities all summer long. Ever wanted to meet a Gatorland wrangler? Orange County Library System (OCLS) will host professional alligator handlers at library branches this summer. Are your kids interested in becoming young entrepreneurs? Sign them up for one of the library’s BizKids summer camps. Looking for some family-friendly musical entertainment? The library will offer musical performances from Recess Monkey, FREE DAPS, SteveSongs and more. The library designs its Summer Reading Program events with learning in mind – all of our programs combine education and fun so kids get to enjoy summer break while taking part in experiences that are enriching and relevant to what they learn in school. Kick off the summer with the OCLS Libraries Rock Summer Reading Program! • On June 2 at Orlando Public Library, check out the musical antics of Recess Monkey, a Grammy-nominated rock band whose oddball style will get everybody in the mood for a hilariously good time. • During June, library branches across the county host Celebrate Summer concerts, featuring local rap improvisers FREE DAPS, best known for their musical comedy freestyle act performed at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios.

• On June 23, the Orlando Public Library is transformed into scenes from the Harry Potter books and movies during the second annual Potterversary. • In July, SteveSongs comes to the Orlando Public Library and the Chickasaw Branch to get the youngsters on their feet, dancing and singing along to his acoustic set. Kids can also attend weekly special events at all library locations, featuring science, animals, art and storytelling. Sign up for technology camps and classes to create video games, mix music, build robots, harness solar power and much more. Complete activities to earn virtual badges and get great book recommendations online. Kids aren’t the only ones who can have fun at the library this summer; OCLS offers summer reading programs for teens and adults too. You know what else rocks about the OCLS Libraries Rock Summer Reading Program? Except for a small materials fee associated with a few camps where kids make something they get to take home, all events, camps and classes are free to OCLS cardholders in good standing. Visit ocls.info/srp or call 407-835-7323 to learn more. Registration for most programs starts April 2.

Overcoming Sleep-Away Camp Anxiety Someone has anxiety about sleep-away camp, but it’s not your kid — it’s you! Laura Lyles Reagan shares her tips for managing your separation anxiety and encouraging your kid to embrace this new adventure. Words by Laura Lyles Reagan Summer shorts and tees purchased, washed and folded neatly in the duffel bag. Bug spray, cellphone charger and the one allowable stuffed animal all packed. Immunization card submitted. Survival snacks tucked away. We were ready for her first week away from home on her own. My daughter was 10 years old and headed to summer church camp. We were pulling into the parking lot to meet the van, when a speeding driver suddenly hit my left driver door while trying to pass us. The police were called. Reports were taken. No one was hurt, but I was stunned. Because I was distracted by the accident, I wasn’t able to give my daughter the proper goodbye I had hoped for. I didn’t get to impart a week’s worth of wisdom about how girls could triangulate, form cliques and leave somebody out. I didn’t get to emphasize that even though there was limited cellphone contact, I would write to her every day via camp email. We had been so busy gathering everything on her “to pack” list and evaluating the “don’t bring” list that I really hadn’t addressed the possibility of separation anxiety.

10-year-old at summer camp was all about me. In hopes of helping nervous moms everywhere, here are some helpful tips for managing anxiety about sleep-away camp.

4 q Prepare an emergency communication plan. Be careful not to alarm your child. Simply tell her that you have numbers for the camp, and you will contact her if an emergency occurs.

4 q Talk

about communication expectations. Review the camp’s policies. Most camps allow family email. Some don’t allow cell phones or only allow cell phones at specified times. Tell her you will be happy to exchange emails if she would like, but emphasize that you understand that she may be too busy having fun to send email.

4 Trust q

your parenting. Communicate confidence about your child’s ability to solve social problems. You have raised a respectful child. Trust that your parenting is being internalized. Trust that any social lessons she is learning will help prepare her for the real world. For example, working with people we don’t like and finding a way to get along is a valuable life skill.

My daughter was a little worried about me because of the accident, but when I told her I was fine, she gathered her sleeping bag, pillows and duffel bag, hugged me and headed happily to the van bound for her summer adventure.

4 q Make your own plans. Plan to have some adult fun while your

Reflecting later, I realized that the separation anxiety was all mine. She had a wonderful time, even though there was a “mean girl” incident or two. She learned to stand up for herself or let go of issues that were not that important to her (a valuable life lesson). She quickly figured out how to correspond with me via the camp's email system. I had the camp’s emergency contact numbers if there were any real need to communicate quickly with her. All was truly well, whether I felt like it or not.

4 q Give a positive goodbye message. Short, loving goodbyes are

As schoolteachers, nurses at doctor’s offices or summer camp counselors will tell you, usually the parents are the source of anxiety, not the kids themselves. I confess that separation anxiety about my

child is away. This is a great time to do things you don’t normally get to do. It is also a great time to focus special attention on other kids who did not attend camp. best. Exude confidence, and tell your child to have a good time.

Finally, don’t worry so much! You signed your child up for camp to experience independence and adventure, so just relax and let your child embrace the magic of campfires, canoes and everything else sleep-away camp has to offer. PASSPORT TO SANFORD Dine and Drink Around the World — Local Style Words by Stephanie Patterson

Dreaming of jet setting this summer? The Downtown Sanford Small World Passport is your ticket to Germany, Belgium, the U.K. and beyond — no airfare required. Created by Mike Smith, a Sanford local and general manager of The Imperial, the passport was put into print after an evening of brainstorming how local businesses could team up to inspire visitors to explore downtown. Today, the passport is a hyperlocal, 21+ food and pub crawl throughout Sanford’s diverse dining and bar scene. And if it’s been awhile since your last visit to Sanford, you’re in for several surprises. “We have a beautiful, turn-of-the-century downtown filled with hardworking, locally owned businesses that all work together for the success of the community as a whole. In the last few years, we have had a dozen quality bars and restaurants open up as well as five breweries, all of them packed into 1 square mile,” Mike explains.

Grab your passport and start globe-trotting! HOW IT WORKS Your Downtown Sanford Small World Passport includes trips to local bars, restaurants and markets, each representing a unique region. The passport can be picked up for free at any of the participating locations. Simply visit each destination on the passport and make a purchase to receive a stamp. Any purchase counts. You’ll have two weeks from the time of your first stamp to complete the passport. Once you’ve traveled to each destination, turn in your passport at Magnolia Square Market for a commemorative Sanford Small World T-shirt. Each edition of the passport has a corresponding T-shirt. Once the current run of t-shirts is gone, a new passport is created.

The Tennessee Truffle

YOUR TRAVEL DESTINATIONS This Epcot-style passport will lead you on a global quest throughout one of Central Florida’s best downtowns. Escape to Belgium at Buster’s Bistro, sip pints in the U.K. at The Stranded Sailor and savor Southern cuisine at The Tennessee Truffle. Here’s where the current passport will transport you: • India: The Imperial at Washburn Imports – This import furniture store by day transforms into a relaxing bar serving beer, wine and cocktails by night.

The Imperial

• USA: Celery City Craft – A cozy craft beer bar with a spacious outdoor patio and 50+ beer taps. • Germany: Magnolia Square Market – Hollerbach’s German deli, market and bakery. • Belgium: Buster’s Bistro – Belgian beer bar and restaurant with 18 draught beers and 50 varieties of bottled beer. • The South: The Tennessee Truffle – A Southern restaurant with the best biscuits and gravy in town. • Conch Republic: The District – This rustic American restaurant features American fare, local craft beer and signature cocktails. • Jamaica: West End Trading Co. – A lively neighborhood bar with live music and fun events.

Buster's Bistro

• The U.K.: The Stranded Sailor – Sanford’s only traditional British Pub with beers from England, Ireland and Scotland. Each destination is subject to change with new editions of the passport. TRAVEL TIPS 1. Extend your travels by completing the passport over the span of several visits or a leisurely staycation weekend. 2. Bring along your Central Florida Ale Trail map. Several breweries on the map are located in Downtown Sanford, allowing you to collect stamps on more than one passport. 3. Travel by train to Sanford using the SunRail on weekdays. It’s an easy trip from Downtown Orlando and will only cost you a few dollars.

LOVE PL AYER

Avani Desai Is Leading by Example Through her work with 100 Women Strong, this Orlando mom is raising children who love to give back. That is the guiding principle behind 100 Women Strong, a “giving circle” that I co-chair for Central Florida Foundation. Each member of 100 Women Strong donates $1,100 a year. We then analyze, research and consult with experts to identify initiatives that will help improve the lives of women and children in Central Florida. By pooling our funds, we can achieve collective impact that spans far beyond our individual contributions. Since 2006, 100 Women Strong has invested more than $550,000 in local initiatives, including partnerships with the Foundation for Foster Children and Harbor House of Central Florida. Recently, 100 Women Strong issued a grant that’s especially close to my heart. In partnership with the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County, we’ll be helping expand a pilot program to address the social and emotional needs of children at two childcare centers in Pine Hills.

As moms, our job is to prepare our children to be responsible individuals. Part of that job is helping them understand how they fit into their community and what role they play. That’s why I’ve made a conscious decision to get my children involved in service at a young age. Kids are givers by nature. We’re all born with empathy and the potential to cultivate great compassion; therefore, it is important to give them firsthand, age-appropriate exposure to our community’s needs. Things like serving meals to the homeless, visiting sick children in the hospital or spending time with homebound seniors can make a lasting and impactful impression on kids. These experiences foster empathy and teach children that sometimes the simplest gestures are the most profound. Another thing I’m doing is teaching my children that there is strength in numbers — that while one person alone may not end homelessness or hunger, a team of people working together most definitely can. Collective giving and providing help to those who need help is a practice that can never be initiated too early in life.

The program is focused on implementing the Circle of Security Model, which prepares caregivers with skills that foster feelings of attachment and security in the children. These interactions create the foundation for a healthy and productive life. Talking with my kids about the “strength in numbers” principle has inspired us all to think bigger about ways we can help our community. Now, we often brainstorm our next charitable contributions together as a family. So many of us want to shield our children from the tough realities of the world. But it’s during these early years that they’re most influenced by what they see and hear — and when they learn lifelong habits. Just know, you’re investing in your child’s character, direction and future — and that of the world. AVANI DESAI is a mom of two, executive vice president at Schellman & Company, member of board of directors at Central Florida Foundation and co-chair of 100 Women Strong, a collective giving initiative of the Central Florida Foundation that inspires women in Central Florida to help improve the lives of women and children through strategic philanthropy

MOM'S GUIDE

Visting Cuba with Kids Havana is an amazing city full of beautiful colors, friendly people and breathtaking old colonial European architecture. It’s a wonderful (and safe) place to visit with kids. Words by Galina Sullivan

Sophia Sullivan (11) taking a photo of Hotel Raquel's architecture in Old Havana

We’ve had Cuba on our travel bucket list for a long time, so we were thrilled to discover that traveling to Cuba (even with kids) has gotten much easier to coordinate than it used to be. Now, there are multiple flights to Havana from most major Florida cities, and several cruise lines offer stops in Cuba. We decided to take a long weekend cruise to Cuba with my 11-year-old daugher, Sophia, and our travel planning couldn’t have been easier.

BEFORE YOU GO Whether you travel to Cuba by plane or by cruise ship, you will need a passport and a Cuban visa to enter the country. We were a little concerned about the restrictions and visa regulations, so we made sure to follow the specific directions given to us by the cruise line. If you decide to travel to Cuba by plane, be sure to start the visa process well in advance of your trip. An important thing to note is that internet connection is difficult to find in Havana. Research the places you want to visit in advance, and bring the information with you. (Tip: Take screen captures of the information with your phone.) Download the Maps.Me app that will help you to navigate using offline maps. Cuba’s currency for tourists is the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). The exchange rate for CUC and the U.S. dollar is 1:1, but due to a hefty exchange rate penalty of 10 percent enforced by the government for exchanging American dollars plus an additional 3 percent transaction fee, you will end up only getting around 87 CUC for every $100 you exchange. One way to avoid that is to bring Canadian dollars or euros instead of American dollars. As for credit cards, it is still almost impossible to use them in Cuba, so be sure to bring plenty of cash.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO WITH KIDS Walk around Old Havana. Wander around the streets of Old Havana, admiring the little side streets, the gorgeous old buildings, the fruit stands on every other corner and the interesting graffiti art on the walls. Your kids will enjoy seeing all the stray cats and dogs lying down on the cobblestones in the shade. Take a ride in a vintage car. Travel back in time by renting an old American car. Although these vehicles are at least 60 years old, most of them are kept in a remarkably good shape. Pick a convertible in a bright color, and take a ride around the main sites of Havana — a guaranteed unforgettable experience for both kids and adults alike. Make your own perfume. Our daughter loved visiting Habana 1791, a popular perfume shop in the heart of Old Havana where you can pick a perfume based on 12 signature scents that have been rescued from Colonial Cuba. You can even make your own fragrance based on your unique preferences. Cruise around town in a Coco Taxi. While Havana is known for the vintage American cars, another form of transportation that your kids will love is the Coco Taxi. These funny-looking, three-wheel auto rickshaws are a perfect way to take in all the vibrant, unforgettable sights of Havana. Coco Taxi

Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski

WHERE TO STAY While there are many perfectly comfortable hotels and Airbnb rentals in Havana, it’s important to keep in mind that what is considered a luxury hotel in Cuba would likely be considered quite basic in the U.S. The one exception: the brand-new, truly glamorous Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana, an amazing, five-star hotel with a rooftop pool, restaurant and bar, all with a breathtaking view of Old Havana. Of course, if you arrive via cruise ship, you won’t have to worry about accommodations. As of last fall, Royal Caribbean and Carnival began sailing from Florida to Cuba with an overnight stay in Havana. This option gives you the great advantage of exploring Havana on a long weekend trip without worrying about where to stay (or where to find bottled water!) while in Havana. El Del Frente

Chiviricos

WHERE TO EAT We loved O’Reilly 304, an unpretentious and cozy yet trendy eatery serving the most delicious ceviche, tapas, and freshly prepared lobster and octopus. We paired the sensational food with mojitos (Cuba’s signature cocktail) for the adults and virgin mango daiquiris for my daughter. Its sister location, El Del Frente, is located across the street. It has a very similar menu and drinks, plus a balcony and rooftop terrace. You’ll find lots of street food options in Havana. Our favorite was chiviricos, a sweet, crunchy fried bread snack covered in powdered sugar that is similar to funnel cakes. GALINA SULLIVAN lives in Tampa with her husband, John, and her two kids, Sophia (11) and Theo (5). The four of them love to travel together as a family and explore places near and far. Who developed the L4G curriculum? The L4G curriculum was developed by Maria Giordano, Ph.D., founder of Leadership 4Girls and former Assistant Professor of Counselor Education. Maria has coached and mentored girls for over twenty years. Her work with girls and young women in the elementary and secondary schools and university setting inspired her to found a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls with knowledge and skills to live happy, successful, balanced lives. As the mother of two daughters, she wants every girl to be prepared to build quality relationships, work effectively in groups, think critically and realize her own unique potential.

Tiny Tourist: Bok Tower Gardens Words by Dana Nichols This is an edited version of the original article published on TownieTourist.com

As you start to plan summer break outdoor activities for your kids, make sure you add Bok Tower Gardens to your lineup. The fact is, Bok Tower Gardens has been on my list for years. It always seemed too far, and I wasn’t quite sure what was out there. Rest assured, it’s worth the drive. Edward Bok came to the United States from the Netherlands as a child, and his family spent winters in Lake Wales. As he grew up, he became a mega-successful publisher, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and humanitarian. In 1929, he purchased the land that is now Bok Tower Gardens and made a beautiful sanctuary. The gardens — oh, the gardens! — are filled with lush, tropical beauty and winding paths that feel like they stretch forever. In reality, it's a quick walk from place to place, which is super important with the kiddos. Gorgeous music from the Singing Tower carillon, a bell tower, echoes throughout the gardens. You can also buy a ticket to Pinewood Estate, a historic home on property with scheduled tours running throughout the day. Aside from all this, there’s a special area just for the kids. Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden is a little nature wonderland. Nature wasn’t just the backdrop but the forefront for the kids to explore their curiosity and creativity. This play area includes a sandbox, a giant spider web climbing structure, wooden instruments, arts and crafts tables, an outdoor dress-up theater and a rustic pioneer

kitchen playspace. I know what you’re thinking: “I have all this stuff at home and at the park by my house.” And to that I say, “Yes, you do. But do you have it in a gorgeous nature sanctuary that you will swear transports you to Colorado or some other fabulous non-Florida feeling place? No, you don’t.” The kids spent hours exploring and running around. They would’ve spent hours more, but the adults were getting hungry. Conveniently, there’s a restaurant on-site, the Blue Palmetto Café, that was quite delicious. We spent four hours at the Bok Tower Gardens, and I know we only scratched the surface of what it has to offer. With kids or without, this is an awesome place for a day trip. PLAY Tip: Bok Tower Gardens is part of the Reciprocal Member Program with Leu Gardens, Orange County Regional History Center, Polasek Sculpture Gardens, Central Florida Zoo and Art & History Museums - Maitland, so check and see what discount or free admission this provides you.
