The “Alberto J Pani Competition is regarded as the most important architectural design competition for students in Mexico. There are two phases to the competition. The first one develops during one week of intense work and consist of creating a design proposal for a given brief. This phase involves the participation of one representative from each school of architecture in the country. 5 proposals are selected for the second phase which then develops over
the period of one month. A new design brief is given and the selected students are placed at a hosting university, one different each year. The second phase for the 1998 competition was at the University of Colima and the proposal was for the redevelopment of part of the sea front of the city of Manzanillo, Colima. The design brief included a mix of commercial and cultural uses.

The competition was for the design of an information centre to promote the CCCN JVC development (an ambitious development that includes projects from famous names like Zaha Hadid, Tom Mayne, Toyo Ito and others. The project is conceived as an “Experiences Container. The visitor is transported vertically and is gradually taken into the 3 different levels. The solid volume providing the exhibition and ancillary accommodation is surrounded by a glass box that incorporates a water curtain creating a cooling effect.

In 2008 the UK Government granted Great Yarmouth with 1 of 8 nation wide “Large Casino” licences. This type of casino is new in the UK and is proposed as means of regeneration. Great Yarmouth has been historically an important tourist destination for nationals, nevertheless, the city and community has suffered a decline in social development in the last decades. Currently, local government promotes substantial investment in cultural infrastructure to ignite social transformation. A community gathering space is suggested as part of a much needed place for social integration. This will aim to balance the impact of seasonal tourism and the intended casino activities. The design proposes the transformation of an existing empty and deteriorated historic building, formerly an art and design school. The building is located in the path of the “Green Corridor” plan that links the city centre with the sea front. This part of the city It is a popular recreational area for locals.
The existing structure implodes creating an “inner space” and an “in between space”. The inner space provides a multipurpose area and embodies the climax of social gathering. The “in between space” encourages people to come together by being reflected on the mirror skin of the “Inner space”. It is here where the individual reflection becomes part of the community gathering.

Manor Farm Barns is a successful example of rural diversification in the UK. The complex of farm barns has been converted in different phases and today it offers office accommodation for approximately 15 companies and one restaurant & events venue. These are some of the projects I was first involved at TCA Design and was able to gain valuable experience in the Planning and Building Regulation process in the UK and then in the production of information and traditional methods of construction. Poringland Community Centre is the result of many years of community fund raising. The design challenge involved creating a highly flexible space to cater for different community activities and groups. All within the limits of the available budget .The proposal was for a very honest and functional building where the use of floor space was maximized. The Main Hall
is 250m2 and can be subdivided into 2, 3 or 4 rooms that can be accessed independently. The installation of movable independent wall panels, offers great flexibility for room configuration. The building incorporates ancillary facilities and a police station. The Community Centre has become an important place in the life of the Poringland and neighbouring villages.

The Holiday Inn in Bristol City Centre recycles a redundant 1960’s office building. The building sits in a part of the city currently undergoing a large regeneration programme. The design development was a lengthily process as the brief and site circumstances changed over a period of time. There were intense negotiations with local authorities and 3rd parties involved. The final design solution retains the original brutal expression of the building and incorporates, in contrast with the exposed concrete, a series of new glazed volumes. The hotel provides 155 guest rooms (including 4 executive suites) distributed over 5 levels, Restaurant & Bar, Gym and Conference facilities . There is an existing carpark occupying the first 2 levels of the building. This offered the challenge of creating an effective connection of the reception and public areas on 2nd floor with the street level. The new scenic lifts and glass envelope transform the expression of the existing vertical circulation tower and offers a new landmark to the surroundings . This was particularly important as the building plays an important role in the complex of buildings surrounding the roundabout. The building is due for completion in 2011 and will be an addition to Bristol’s portfolio of buildings aiming city regeneration.

Leukerbad is a popular tourist destination that is famous for its thermal baths, the largest in the Swiss Alps. The project redevelops a partly empty site in the centre of the town, right in front of the bus station and many popular restaurants and shops. It gives the town a new “Town Square which combines hard landscaping with water features, with strong reference to the thermal baths. The centre of the public space can be flooded in winter to create a skating rink. The development is mixed used combining residential, commercial, cultural, education. It includes a new hotel and a winter sports school.

The project is conceived from the idea of creating a space which marks the beginning of a journey of discoveries. It takes the form of a trapezoidal multipurpose room which projects out to the openness of the park by creating a transitional experience. The user finds itself in a wooden enclosed space where a series of portholes varying in size and height incite discovery while providing “snapshots of the park outside. The experience of discovery develops when independent movable wall panels turn and slide to gradually reveal the natural surroundings. The user could then contemplate a view of the park and be encouraged to explore it. The multipurpose room is in direct connection with the park’s open area enabling a space that could not only meet the demands for an education facility but also many other community activities associated with the park.

Multipurpose Stage
The design follows the principles of off-site construction and the use of materials with low environmental impact, low maintenance and excellent longevity properties. The main body of the building is formed with structural cross-laminated timber panels and is raised on steel piles minimizing its impact on the ground. The external cladding suggests the use of copper or titanium-zinc combined with cedar boarding.

easyHotel is an expanding budget hotel franchise in Europe. The project for the easyHotel in Glasgow provides 134 budget guest rooms by recycling an existing 1970’s offices building situated at the edge of an important conservation area in the centre of the city. The design intention is to retain some of the modernist language of the building. This is done
by stressing the expression of the horizontal layers created by the floor slabs and the curtain walling. The existing structure is completely striped out and the thermal performance of the building is upgraded by re-cladding the entire building with a combination of insulated aluminum panels and a modular, double skin, glass channel system.

The Granary is a project for a new family house in the Village of Thurton, Norfolk. The site is part of a former farm yard where other traditional brick barns are undergoing conversion to residential. There are a number of redundant steel frame sheds that will be demolished to clear the site The design proposes to re-use, as much
as possible, the materials coming from the redundant buildings such as crushed concrete and masonry, grain silos, steel profiles and timber boarding. The re-use of these materials will contribute to the intention of creating a building that reflects the former farm use of the site and its utilitarian architecture.
