A SMALL HOUSE FOR A BIG FAMILY FACULTY PROJECT Oporto is a city full of empty spaces that are undercover by all the buildings that complete the city landscape. This project area it is one of these spaces. Nowadays, it is used by the owners as a cultive area due to its small area and its elevation in relation the surrounding space. As the terrain, also the household of the customer had a set of unique characteristics. First, the client was a film teacher and a filmmaker himself who lives with his wife and their pets (20 cats and 4 dogs). The house was suposed to be divided into three main areas, two seperate houses (one for the client and the other one for his daughter and her two sons) with common spaces along with a work studio for the client, completely apart from the residencial area. The Bifamiliar Housing to develop must include two houses that connect through a common lower division, where space can be enjoyed by all family members, and outdoor areas. The interior of each home seeks to answer the particular needs of each element of the household, making possible the flexibility and the multiplicity of spaces through the use of furniture. Each piece of furniture can be changed in position and location to allow different organizations space. Creating a workspace with housing, but seeks to maintain the necessary separation for the proper functioning and independence of both parties, still creating a possibility of transition between the two spaces. The set bifamiliar will combine pre-existing materials (stone) with the customer’s preferences (wood), aware of the har- mony that should exist between them. Formally the geometric solid are present since the housing takes the form of two parallelepipeds overlapping each other, but the top is moved forward by taking more functions as a whole.

Set in a harbour area and formerly used as a bus parking lot, the land where now is born a new dance school has several limitations caused by this engaging odd. The School seeks to give a new meaning to an area with many important city points, since it is surrounded by elements as important and vital as the Municipal Market, the Leixões harbour, the metro station that links this city to Porto and the strategic proximity to the sea. All these spaces give liveliness and movement to this part of town, that despite the efforts has few urban arrangements to be done in order to be appropriate to the population use. The program comprises in addition to the spaces directed to dancing school, a multipurpose space of cultural and exhibition framework that can function separate from teaching structure form - the auditorium. In addition to these areas are made different arrangements for the urban surroundings, not a repellent element for the new space, but rather a whole, without underestimating the importance of this natural element. Further facilities include public spaces as living areas, cafes and car parks.

REBUILDING THE URBAN TISSUE, THE AEP AVENUE FACULTY PROJECT
The VCI is one of the busiest highways, which surrounds the entire city of Porto, therefore, also has the most difficult points of access either input or output from this to other cities. The purpose of this project is precisely identify and restructure the most problematic areas, restoring to them the urban importance. One of the most contentious points of the VCI is the Francos intersection, one of the few connections between the north of the country and the center of Porto, which also connects the city center to the industrial zone and the Leix천es harbour. Every day, at peak times, there are traffic jams in this area, so it is urgent find solutions that change and improve this situation. As such, the proposal seeks to restore the avenue function to the AEP avenue, undoing the Francos intersection. This leads to the redesign of the links between the avenue and VCI, with underground parts and the redesign of the secondary roads. Everything in the search for a smoother and fine drawing that values the surrounding areas and the different urban areas in this part of town, unlike what happens this time. This leads to the redesign of the surrounding areas that are underutilized, making this area before conflicted, a point of structuring and striking landmark in the city.

With the changes made to the road level, it was necessary to also change the engaging area so as to improve the urban condition of the whole area. Thus, the most suitable program would be to create a congress center because of the existing proximity to the downtown business district, the strategic position on the city’s exits as well as the connections to the port of leixões and airport. By setting the major part of the program it was necessary to think in buildings that should complement, such as commercial, residencial and business areas and the appropriate redesign of all streets and small spaces belonging to this complex. Hence the design of public space also be an important point in the project and making it one of the most complete proposals made. First, the study of the project’s macro-scale (redesign Francos intersection), through a mesoscale (restructuring of the surrounding roads and adjacent areas) and ending in the creation of a detailed plan that compiles all the strategic points of improvement the VCI area next to the Francos intersection.

POLANA CANIÇO: A NEIGHBORHOOD IN MOVEMENT, AN EVOLVING COMMUNITY A perspective on the city of Maputo MASTERS DISSERTATION The present dissertation “Polana Caniço A: A Neighborhood in movement, an evolving Community. A perspective on the city of Maputo “has analysed Polana Caniço, A suburban neighborhood, located in peripheral border of Maputo, as a result of the excessive expansion of the city. The aim of this study is to identify, analyze and dissect the large urbanistic and architectural problems in the neighborhood showing possible paths to mitigate and, contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of its inhabitants. Since the neighborhood is not an isolated object without context or environment, it is necessary to present the constraints of the country and the city where this falls in order to better understand its history, evolution and current features. Otherwise it would not be possible to understand the origin of the neighborhood and the characteristics that shares and distinguishes it from other neighborhoods in Maputo. Thus, at first is made the social-historical, architectural and urbanistic framework of Maputo in the Mozambican context, showing its main stages of development and transformation, since the origin, colonial structure and emancipation turning into a city of a free country. After the historicist territorial framework is approached the concept of city and urban planning in order to better understand the themes of informality and the duality that can be found in the city today, with the introduction of these same contents in Maputo and the understanding of the city reaction to this contents. Based on the duality and informality present in the city, comes the last step of the dissertation, which presents the existing urban division in the city – Urban area, Suburban area and Periurban area – and fits the neighborhood in its corresponding zone. This is the motto for the development of the chapter about Polana Caniço A, which characterizes it in social, historical, urbanistic and architectural terms. Through the in-depth study of the neighborhood is understandable the constant movement and the increasing evolution of their community, revealing spatial and infrastructural problems of this and giving rise to the creation of new spaces and the regeneration of others that already exists in order to improve their problems and enhance its qualities and peculiarities that distinguish it from all other suburban neighborhoods of Maputo.

BETWEEN WALLS COMPETITION GOARCHITECTURE 2013 in colaboration with Arq. PatrĂcia Quintas
Of an expert ground overlooking the Douro born a space for artists and artisans. This space is delimited by a wall that marks its position in the surroundings. The main purpose of this building is to stand out as a singular volume, referring to the image of the pre-existing wall (although amended to better integrate the aesthetics of the set) that is torn at the most interesting viewpoints. We can grasp the representative elements present here through the realization that the interiors of the building spaces arise from the twist of this wall, remembering that the anchor of the project it is the distributor space, with a regular plan that defines the facade that makes the connection between the proposal and the housing in the surroundings. From the openings appear the landscape interludes, all directed to the Douro river, serving as a stimulus to the creation of the artistic work by users of this building. The openings of ateliers allow viewing the horizon marked by water and waterfront of Gaia area, as well as the courtyards that form the negative form of the whole proposal. The main idea of this project is to create the negative of the typical block that exists in the surroundings, ie geometrically regular spaces patios (playgrounds), and the irregular shape that defines the volumetric corresponds to the built urban area. The commonly expected is the geometric presence in the built and the irregularity in the free spaces, however, this building suggests a change to what is considered traditional, providing a diversity that enriches not only the interior spaces and its interconnection with the surrounding buildings . The building created highlights with a privileged view that have its deployment and demand to contaminate the surrounding.

TEMPORARY BAR “QUEIMA DAS FITAS“ COMPETITION 2014
Inspired by the paintings of Pollock and the dynamics given by the ink movement when hitting the screen, the temporary bar so arises in the particular context, promoting interaction between the audience and the building, making the users see this as a piece of temporary art. The structure, pre-existing, is metallic, simple and easy to assembly, alongside the proposed coating that contains the same features. To effect sealing and solid coating are placed translucent plastic plates, fixed to a metal net, being resilient, but allowing passage of the indoor lighting strategically placed along the structure. Finally, the first strokes of painting are provided within the tent, so that it never runs out of ink in its all due to weathering (as the probability of rainfall is very high, and counting on it, the exterior of the proposal is constantly changing, given that much of the paint will get out, there is always a clean screen in the intervention, every day) and the outside of the tent is painted by the public that comes to the installation and where they are available cups with paint to add colors to the bar. The idea, simple, seeks to promote the interaction of people with the installation placed on the site, and it does not pass only by a static and passive element, but an element in constant change that promotes the mobilization of the environment. The simplicity and originality were a primacy to the creation of the proposal and the reduced budget also a concern and an element considered here.

Along the total length of the Douro’s riverside, there are several places lacking an intervention. This project is located between D. Luiz and Infante bridges and it is affected by the proximity to the Ribeira area. On the boundaries of this space we propose two solid towers. Each of them define the access to a path meandering the length of the building site and are the only elements that interconnect the vertical space. Our path is the unifying element of the whole program, noted for its materiality in corten steel that contrasts with the two concrete towers. The irregular form of the square arises from the path inflections. It participates with the project facade by its structural lightness. In contrast, the swimming pool is distinguished by its integration with the environment, embedded in the rocky outcrop next to the retaining wall. Inside the east tower there is a bar which also serves the pool area. Both the restaurant and the pool infrastructures are under the path, integrated into the project by being included between two levels. So the conceptual basis of the intervention it is reflected on a path that is extended along the site, turning on specific places to create viewpoints to the surrounding landscape. The openings in the towers are also thought and carved to specific places from Oporto and Gaia. The essence of the project is in the space permeability that the volumes present and the visual intentionality that their recesses present to who exploits.
