Muay Thai Training Camps, Introduction

Muay Thai is a form of ancient martial art which has been practiced among brave men of Siam for centuries. Also known as ‘Kick Boxing’, this sport has been gaining popularity around the world, particularly among westerners (men and women) who enjoy a more uninhibited form of fighting as opposed to regular boxing. Some admitted to being drawn to the ‘raw’ quality of Muay Thai where fighters are allowed to use all parts of the body such as fists, legs, feet, elbows and knees. Needless to say, it is not a sport for the weak or weak-hearted.

Learning Muay Thai, however, is not all about violence and aggression. It is a sport which requires a lot of techniques and skills along with quick wit and good body-eye coordination. Some men and women have taken up this sport to lose weight, build strength and muscles while many feel that it is extremely viable as a self-defense program. And for those who wish to take it to the next level and compete, there are amateur competitions held for different levels although it is vital to consult with your trainers whether or not you are qualified or where to start.

History The most famous history of Muay Thai ever recorded was during the late 1700s, at a time when Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam. It was a story of Nai Kanomtom, a Thai boxer who was captured and brought to Burma, along with other prisoners, by the invading Burmese troops. One day during a celebration, the Burmese king ordered a boxing match set up between Thai prisoners and the Burmese soldiers. When it was Nai Kanomtom’s turn, he performed the Wai Kru dance as he came on, then one-by-one began to

defeat all nine Burmese soldiers with forceful kicks, punches and deadly blows using the knees and elbows. The Burmese had thought that Nai Kanomtom’s Wai Kru dance was some kind of Black Magic that put a spell over his opponents but nevertheless recognized him as the greatest boxer of all times. Today, March 17 is acknowledged as Thailand’s Muay Thai Day to commemorate the bravery of this Siamese boxer.

10 th World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony France, Japan, Korea, Italy, Vietnam, USA, UAE, Spain and South Africa, participate in the Ceremony and show their appreciation for the beautiful art of Muay Thai. There will also be a Miracle Muay Thai Festival, the championship match to win the W.P.M.F Belt and the professional Muay Thai competition of Thai and foreign boxers including the Beautiful Muay Thai or women match.

The ancient capital of Ayutthaya is home to the annual World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony, Muay Thai boxers from around the world return to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya to pay respect to their teachers, and to pay homage to the legendary Muay Thai folk hero, Nai Khanom Tom. Each year, Muay Thai boxers from more than 40 countries including United Kingdoms, Canada, Russia,

Before the fight begins, both boxers will perform a Ram Muay or Wai Khru dance in the ring according to tradition as an act of respect to their teachers and to gain auspiciousness. This involves various positions of bowing and kneeling rhythmically while circling the ring. The distinct tunes played are sounds of Javanese clarinet, drums and small hand symbals. At the end of the dance, the boxers’ Mongkol headbands are removed by their trainers then the fight can begin. There are 5 rounds per match and each one lasts 2 minutes. Down time caused by interruptions during the fight are added to the fight time, not subtracted from it.

Equipment

Thai boxing is the kind of sport which doesn’t require high-tech equipment since the most important elements needed are the boxers’ own physique. However, there are certain equipments needed for protection, training or simply there for tradition. These include protection gears like hand wraps, boxing gloves, rubber mouth guards, metal cups or groin protectors, head guards, shin protectors and belly guards. Then of course, there’s the distinctive, shiny traditional Muay Thai shorts that all boxers must wear. One more important item symbolizing Muay Thai (worn only during the Wai Kru dance) is the Mongkol head band. These head bands are blessed by monks and is placed on the boxers’ heads by their trainers to bring them good luck. Mongkol

Today it is known as one of the best Muay Thai training centers in the north of Thailand. The school opens everyday and has two training sessions in a day, one the morning and the other in the afternoon. Instructions are given by Muay Thai experts and many hold a university’s degree and speak good English. As the school is located slightly away from the city of Chiangmai, guests who wish to train intensively in seclusion may find this school to be a suitable choice. And though not located in downtown; the reputation of the trainers here, the peaceful surrounding and the cool climate of the north, still regularly attract many Muay Thai enthusiasts from US, Europe and Australia to Kiat Busba.

Muaythai Chaiya is an ancient self-defense art of boxing founded during the Sukhothai Dynasty several hundred years ago. It has since then evolved and became what we know as Muay Thai today. Currently, Muay Thai Chaiya is being actively revived in Thailand by a few renowned masters. Its emphasis is on the master and student relationship, much like many other forms of ancient self-defense art of the eastern countries. Its method is similar to the current Muay Thai but with some variations and occasionally includes weapons in the fights such as sticks and knives. Master Praeng, the founder of Muay Thai Chaiya network of schools, has set up schools in several locations throughout the countries such as Bangkok, Lopburi and Chaingmai. Chiangmai is known for its quiet and relaxing atmosphere and cool climate, hence it is an ideal place of training for serious practitioners who seek focus and contemplative training instructions.

Muay Thai Arenas, Introduction

Originally used for selfdefense in battles, Muay Thai or kick boxing has its origin in the Kingdom of Thailand where it has evolved throughout the centuries both as an art and now, a sport that is well known over the world. Initially, Muay Thai was fought barefisted with only hemp rope tied around the fist. But as a sport, this caused too serious an injury so the modern day Muay Thai is toned down with the use of boxing gloves. Recently, kick-boxing has become a major boom in the sporting industry around the world, and countless self-defense enthusiasts of diverse nationalities are flocking to Thailand both to watch and to train in this ancient discipline. As the homeland of Muay Thai, Thailand, hence has many boxing arenas which, for decades, have long become part of the Thai culture where local people queue to watch and cheer their favorite fighters from provinces across Thailand. There are 10 major boxing arenas in the kingdom, famous ones are obviously located in the capital city of Bangkok and a few others are in Pattaya and Samui. The most well known arenas are undoubtedly the iconic Rajdamnoen Arena and Lumpini Arena, where every famous Muay Thai champions of the past have fought and new stars are discovered. The two arenas are comparable to the famed Madison Square Garden of New York City and every Thai fighter share one single dream to fight on either of the two prestigious rings. Boxing matches in Bangkok are held nearly everyday alternating between Rajdamnoen and Lumpini as well as a few others in Bangkok and many classes of tickets are available from

action-packed ringside seats to simple seats on the grand stand where crowds are jeering and cheering their lungs out.

Going to a Muay Thai fight is also one of the best ways to experience Thai culture and see what local people do with their night-outs. There is nothing more thrilling than to witness some of the best fighters in the industry demonstrating their lethal moves and see who will be the last man standing. It also helps to support the local Thai boxing industry and traditional fights that are slowly being forgotten by the new generation. But most definitely, with the help of the Tourism and Sports Authority and recognition from foreign kick-boxers who come to learn the ‘real thing’ in Thailand, Muay Thai still has a bright future that will remain with the country for many more centuries to come.

A visit to a Muay Thai match is always a feast to both the eyes and ears. Oftentimes, watching other spectators being so engrossed with the fight and totally oblivious to everything else is, in itself, very amusing to watch. Aside from witnessing the best boxers of the country showing off their individual techniques, you will also enjoy the traditional music which accompanies the fights and witness the sacred rite of Wai Kru, when fighters invoke the blessings of their teachers at the start of each match.

Another iconic stadium along with Rajdamnoen Stadium, it was founded in 1956 by General Prapas Jarusathien and since then it has been run by the Royal Thai Army on the behalf of the Thai Government. Just like its rival, Rajdamnoen, Lumpini has similar regulations and ranking system as well as championship titles ranging from mini flyweight up to super welterweight and likewise, it is also a place where every Thai boxer dreams to fight upon its ring. Many legendary fighters have been made here; one of them being the undefeatable Dieselnoi Chor Thanasukarn, who never lost to anyone in any match and held the championship title for four straight years before he was being forced to retire due to lack of opponents. Today, Lumpini is changing its facet as we speak. It is moving to a new and spacious home in Bangkhen District, where a modern, state of the art stadium has recently been constructed. Renowned throughout the country and the world as the ultimate arena to witness the best of Muay Thai, Rajdamnoen Stadium was founded in 1941; but due to World War II, construction was not complete until 1945. Initially, the stadium was built in the Roman Amphitheatre style with open-roof, but six years later in 1951, a concrete roof was added. Additionally, the stadium was at first ran by the government, but due to successive loss in income, it was later granted by the Crown Property to be turned into a profit making company known as ‘Rajdamnoen Co., Ltd’. Today, besides being the most famous place to watch Muay Thai matches, it is also the arena where every Thai fighter dreams of having the honor to fight on its legendary stage. Omnoi Stadium, Samut Sakorn Overviews

Founded in 1984, Omnoi Stadium was created by a group of businessmen who want to telecast Muay Thai matches on a national television channel; and initially the matches were broadcasted on Channel 9. The stadium’s popularity then slowly grew and they expanded to a larger stadium in 1987. However, the live broadcast of Muay Thai matches at Omnoi Stadium came to a halt when Channel 9 decided to stop the broadcast in favor of football matches. In 1993, nevertheless, a new deal was struck with Channel 3 and live broadcast here was resumed until now where matches are held and broadcasted every Saturday at 11am. Though much less popular than the legendary Rajdamnoen and Lumpini Stadiums, sometimes important matches with great fighters take place here and tickets get sold out very quickly. Moreover, Omnoi is also opened to qualified foreign Muay Thai boxers to fight and many matches with Thai vs. international boxers have already occurred frequently here. Additionally, the stadium is also very popular amongst local Muay Thai enthusiasts as tickets here are cheap compared to some other stadiums. Prices range from only 200 to 600 baht.

Muay Thai Boxing Shows, Introduction

The boisterous cheering of the crowd, the adrenaline rush and the highly charged energy in the stadium are all characteristics one will experience during a Muay Thai match. To a lot of people, it is one form of entertainment while to others, it is a mysterious, ancient Thai martial art where every move is calculated and carried out with precision.

Unlike real Muay Thai matches, shows are aimed at demonstrating techniques and pleasing the crowd rather than winning or losing. Some venues even focus on the artistic, theatrical side for audiences’ viewing pleasure rather than the raw exchange of physical blows between two opponents. High quality lights and sound system plus fascinating stage props are incorporated to make things more entertaining. Audiences will also witness the traditional side of boxing, the ‘Wai Kru’ dance performed by both boxers at the beginning of each match. This ritual is an integral part of Muay Thai which not only shows respect for the trainers but also for good luck for the boxers. This age-old sport has been practiced in Thai history for hundreds of years but the first man who made it famous was Nai Kanom Tom who lived in the 1700s during the Ayutthaya period. Now the exciting part, audiences will get a glimpse of jawdropping techniques employed in Muay Thai that are not present in standard boxing. Some of these include ‘the kick’ which involves fast hip rotation to create torque; the point of contact often equating to being hit by a baseball bat. Also deadly is the ‘Flying Hanuman’, a continuous motion of jumping

stadiums as they are built to please varied types of audiences. As Muay Thai gained popularity among foreigners in recent years, many bars set up along touristy streets would incorporate live Thai boxing in their small, makeshift stage. Sadly though, they are often uninspiring and insulting to Thai culture as a whole. To really appreciate this ancient Siamese art and tradition, it is best to experience it from a venue dedicated to honoring the sport. Good quality Muay Thai shows are available in different parts of Thailand so that visitors can gain better access and get a clearer understanding of its history, evolution and an insight into the minds of early courageous Siamese fighters.

up in the air while thrusting one knee at the opponent’s face. Another truly lethal move is the ‘elbow strike’ which concentrates the full force of the blow onto one single point, normally the opponent’s chin or forehead. If done properly, it almost always leaves a nasty cut and/ or bone fracture. But not all Muay Thai shows are gory. Though targeted for the male audience, they can be interesting for women, too. Witnessing kick boxing can add an exciting twist to an otherwise tranquil holiday and perhaps even inspire some to take up the sport, whether for protection or to enhance one’s own physical strength. Moreover, show venues tend to be more comfortable and luxurious than actual boxing
