Graduate Thesis

Playful Objects 2019 SCI-Arc Graduate Thesis SCI-Arc Gehry Prize Advisor: Hernan Diaz Alonso Individual Work This thesis explores what architecture and playfulness can do together. People tend to like things that allow them to play with and arouse their playful memories. Artists imbue playful culture, color, and personality into installations that change the way we experience the space and its context. By transforming familiar playful ready-mades into something imprecise and formless, and recomposing them in a very precise way, we can create architecture with new aesthetics, having people to perceive it and want to behave playfully around it spontaneously. In architecture, there has been a long discussion about manipulating familiar objects and defamiliarizing them at the same time to go from the literal to the abstract. However, when it comes to the composition, especially between different objects, it is not easy to escape from collaging. Getting inspirations from playful objects like toys or cartoon figures, this thesis will take a step further to focus on the transitions. The strategies of transitions include: fusing and smoothing the intersection and sharp edges; permeating the patterns from one object to another and from two-dimensional figures to three-dimensional shapes; constructing simple, round-shape, toy-like joint connections. In this thesis, a formal tool-kit will be built up through manipulating online 3d print toys, taking out parts that have the quality of the original but no longer recognizable. Then, to examine and develop the methodology, these abstract playful shapes will be used to remake canonical architecture projects within the same dimension and location, considering adding bold colors, plastic materiality, the possibility to be interactive, and most importantly, the precise transitions. Lastly, by adding up more and more things and locating in a conventional site, the project will go extreme to the next level. The project is designed to be enjoyable, to reshape the context and to let people find their own way to play with it.

Introverted vs. Extroverted 2018 SCI-Arc 2GBX Design Studio: Man Made Nature Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA Instructor: Kristy Balliet Team: Siyao Zheng, Gun Srisawat Downtown LA is an area where events and activities happen just inside the building and veiled from the city. Therefore in this project, we create moments of punctuation to expose the vibrancy of the interiors to the city and break down the entire space into many different spaces so that people can get many parts of the building at one time and experience the building as a series of stories. In general, for the market area, we maintain the existing flower market as a plinth and we insert new market pavilions with spherical volumes into the plinth, breaking down the perimeter walls, creating a sequence of experiences for people inside the building, and a series of deep views for people walking by on the outside. For the residential tower, we wrapped different volumes into one integral mass, creating introverted event space for the residential. At some moments, the elevated event spaces are open to create views connecting to the adjacent city. Each exposed volume contains a different artificial texture with the undefinable edge, which represents the real quality of nature, such as decay, over-growth, and abundance of texture.

Photosynthesis 2016 Tongji University Vertical Studio: Thermodynamic Prototype Shanghai Pudong Library Competition, 2nd Place Location: Shanghai, China Instructors: Linxue Li, Jianjia Zhou Team: Siyao Zheng, Xin Zheng, Xinxin Lyu Plants capture and deliver energy in a highly efficient way because of their intellectual structural and mechanical systems. Current environmental buildings, however, mostly depend on machines instead of the form itself to save energy. In this project, we are looking for the possibility of architecture to operate a similar system and principles of capturing and recycling the energy as plants. In comparison, we find that the processes of energy recycling in the current architecture are inadequate or partly missing. Solar panels and HVAC equipment is not the best way to capture and transfer energy. Therefore, by studying the inner mechanism of vegetation, this project intends to create a logical architectural form. The proposed geometry is a combination of porosities, layers, and channels. This calibrated composition will be able to keep the energy flowing and cycling from inside of the building to the outside urban environment autonomously, making architecture itself become a “Thermodynamic Machine.

Yin and Yang 2017 Tongji University Bachelor Thesis Exchange Program in TUM, Germany Location: Stuttgart, Germany Instructors: Jianlong Zhang Individual Work In two weeks, the studio visited eighteen Confucius Institutes around Germany. Based on a large amount of research, we found two major drawbacks in those conventional cultural communication institutes: the teaching space is monotonous, and the institution itself is introverted to the context. They are usually lacking public space and are difficult to be seen from outside. This project intends to design a new typology of cultural communication and consider it as an agent to reactivate the site, a historic block in Stuttgart. By slightly shifting the existing urban grid and creating stepping open space above the ground, the new culture center improves the visual and spatial connection between the site and its context. Getting inspiration from the traditional Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, the new Sino-German Culture Center has two major layers intertwining with each other. The under layer serves as many small teaching units with monolithic concrete structure, providing interior alleys for citizens and functional space for faculties. The upper layer is a larger open space to the public, with a visually floating round-shape wood structure. The stepping open area is the public event generator, providing space for activities such as lectures, exhibitions, and flea markets. There is a Yin Yang relationship between public and private, between wood and stone, between western culture and eastern spirits.

City Projection 2014 Tongji University Computational Design Studio Tongji University Academy Award for Best Studio Project Location: Shanghai, China Instructors: Philip F. Yuan, Lyla Wu Individual Work In many films and cartoons, future human beings were assumed to live underground where the sky can never be seen due to the overgrowth of the city and technology. Ironically, people are facing the same problem nowadays with the process of urbanization. Overcrowded urban density and the excess amount of high-rises destruct the historic skyline matured over time. In the coming future, people might have to strive for their rights to see the sky. Located in an old but prosperous Xujiahui District in shanghai, the site is surrounded by buildings with various histories and styles. When seen from different viewpoints, these buildings show different facades to the community, composing an interesting skyline system of the district. This project intends to draw people’s attention to urbanization and their changing living surroundings, by creating a museum, an iconic form, in the community. By projecting the moments of the existing skyline to the massing, a series of geometries is generated. While walking around the stony massing, people could see the different moments of current skylines and surrounding neighborhoods through different viewpoints. The iconic form thus memorizes the current moment of urban appearance and calls attention to people’s right to sharing the sky-scape.

Glass Mass 2019 SCI-Arc 3GBX Applied Studies Instructor: Marcelo Spina Team: Siyao Zheng, Mahyar Naghshvar The dichotomy between Transparency and Opacity has long haunted architectural history and theory. Mies Van der Rohe photomontages for Berlin’s Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper depict precisely the ambivalence of the architect towards these seemingly oppositional notions of describing mass. When surfaces are opaque, mass is readable but relations between interior and exterior are very much discontinuous. On the contrary, transparency implies the partial erasure of mass, in pursuit of clarity of vision as well as views. This dichotomy is still very much present nowadays. In this course, we design a new semi-transparent glass envelope as a small prototype, taking visual ambivalence (transparency, translucency, and opacity) as the basis for their formal, material and constructive investigations. As our concept, we overlay the image of the Doric column and Mies Van der Rohe’s skyscraper drawing and project them onto three layers of glasses. The new frit patterns enhance the vertical lines while the mullions are delicately hidden in the darker area. When walking around the envelope, the perspective of the image will keep changing and people will feel the depth of the space in-between layers of glass panels.

Envelope Transformation 2017 SCI-Arc 2GAX Applied Studies Instructor: Maxi Spina Team: Siyao Zheng, Chengxi Hou, Jiekai Yi, Yue Qi The assignment of this course is to reformulate the initial tectonic conjectures to adapt to a slightly altered design scenario, constrained by assigned performance criteria. Each group is asked to transform their selected precedent by transforming the existing shading system into a new one. To improve the shading and ventilation performance of the precedent, International Baroque Museum designed by Toyo Ito, our group reorganized different orientation and curvature of pre-fabricated sandwich concrete wall panels of the south and west facades. We play with different angles of twisting, different opening directions and different sizes of apertures. Finally, we have one solution that has the best-optimized lighting effect. At the same time, we adjust the original L-shape rebar connection with the curved concrete wall panels, to follow the original structural system of the precedent.

Enframed Nature 2016 LOUNA International University Construction Design Competition, 3rd Place Location: Louna Village, Guizhou, China Instructor: Linxue Li Team: Siyao Zheng, Even He, Miya He, Zhaohua Zheng, Yoki Wang, Jian Rao, Weijun Tang, Kevin Tang Individual Drawings In traditional Chinese painting, people pursue the connection between living space and the natural environment. Nature inspires people by its splendid landscape, changing weather and daylight. Compared with the urban environment, the natural elements have more powerful effects on people’s perception. This project is the construction and design competition that requires participants to design a bamboo shelter for travelers in the Louna valley in Guizhou. When considering the building that is located far from civilizations and surrounded by the smell of paddy and sound of frogs, everything seems to be so minute which raises the sense of poetic. Considering the landscape and local culture, a densely arranged bamboo frame with inner curved surfaces is proposed. The frame serves as the container of not only the beautiful view of nature but also the lights, wind, rainfall and water vapor. It is also the container of local events and a temporary shelter for hikers. The bamboo frame provides structural stability reinforced by the curved surfaces and log-cabin base with effective joints. The shape of curved surfaces is optimized by wind flow simulation so that the wind and water vapor will be unhindered when passing through.
