DESIGN FOR
EMOTION
chapter 1
This chapter’s works is about searching for the relationship between design, art, and emotion. Design is a creative activity that combines the rational with the perceptual. Under the premise that design will meet user’s needs, it should be touching and get close to art.

The Art of Light The design topic for this semester is light. Professor divide us into five groups and let us to discover different filed of light, such as the history of light, the physics of light, the biology of light. I’m responsible for the art of light.
14
Product Analysis At the beginning of this project, I explore the functionality of lamps by researching them. After discussion with professors, I list 8 dimensions that a great lamp should have. I collect lots of lamp on the market, and score them by these dimensions to pick out the best one.
Collected Products

15
Interview & Persona I interviewed lots of people and take pictures of their table, see if there're any chances to find out the better way of lighting. After this research I find out that there're only three types of student's table, and only two ways of lighting. The common ground of those people is that they all want their table lamp to be adjustable and space-efficient, but no one can do that at this moment.

Motivations Bella is from Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Bella's Professor says that she is one of the smartest students in the class. She is ambitious about both coures and work, and always finished the work efficiently, but she is not good at storing and cleaning.
Frustrations Not being able to find a good designed lamp. He's table lamps is not adjustable.
Frustrations Having too many things hoarding on the table. Don't have enough space of table while living in the dorm.
Goals Owns the lastest designed lamps that meet he's demand.
Goals Hoping her new lamps doesnt' take up too much space.
17
Ideation Sketch After researching the information about light and defining the target audience. I start to brainstorm the idea of designing a lamp. This process lasted for three weeks, I keep modifying the form of the lamp and trying to meet the needs of the user. These are part of my ideas.
18
Modeling & Testing I make a lot of models with corrugated cardboard to make sure that the form of lamp will meet the requirements. After that, I build the 3D model and printed it to make a prototype.
19
"Each lamp in the series is given one distinct geometric curve, which is represented with brass."
"Each curve bears a unique personality and a story to be told."
The Story Behind The world consists of people, object, and the environment. Defining the relationships between these dimensions is extremely difficult, but possible if done step by step. For example, the lamp is a device which provides lighting, a constitutive element of the surroundings; and it is also a space-dividing tool once emitting light. When lamps light up different places, areas for varied purposes are thus defined. From Idea to Product As designers, we must keep searching for the most harmonious relationship between people, objects, and the environment, in order to design an excellent product. This is how the Composition series was made. I interpreted the lamp holders, lamp stands, and light bulbs with geometric elements such as points, lines, and planes. Through re-structuring of the elements, the lamps are allowed to fulfill both function and aesthetics in the most simplistic form.

Self-Reflection
Initial Idea Music is an inevitable part in our life, but, perhaps, people don't know plant loves music, too. Plants even have consciousness, sensory and emotion, happiness or sorrow. Moreover, it even has the extrasensory beyond human beings. Its not strange for our unknown because this kind of knowledge never makes our life better.

Final Sketch
This project isn't like a traditional product design, it's more like a critical design. I think sketch wouldn't be necessary in this case, but I still sketch a lot. I always thinking by doing, so the more I sketch, the clearer I know what I want.
I already set the goal for this critical design project at the beginning, so It's even harder for me to decided the form. The form has to be exactly match the story or it wouldn't be convinced.
Rendering I used Rhinoceros to do the 3D modeling, then I used KeyShot and Photoshop to do the rendering.

In order to find out the most suitable material for the speaker, I study a lot and try to discover the story that behind the material. I decided to use metal, concrete, and acrylic, I'll explain why I decided to use these materials later.

Co-growth & Co-inspiration
The Reason to Share
From ancient times, human beings and plants have kept a subtle relationship, people grow the crops up, and they raise us and our heirs up, forever and ever. There is a hope to create a relationship of co-growth and co-inspiration between humans and plants. Furthermore, arise the reflection of instrumentalism in mind. Therefore, the work is not for utility or human beings but for share and plants. Gradually, not only design for plants but also everything with unique power.
The WHO (World Health Organization) advises that people should not listen to music over a hour from the harm for ear, no matter how much you like it. Moreover, according to the research, plants grow faster by sinking in music within a hour. Why don't we share the very one hour with plants? That's the reasons why I create this speaker.
Form & Materials After the industrial revolution, mass production of certain materials, for example, metal, concrete, plastic ruin the environment seriously, as a result, I try my best to build a greenhouse belongs to plants with above materials. I dedicate to reduce interfering by shape, so the whole project is made by cylinders and pipes. To create an environment including melody, fertile soil, light, temperature, and moisture, there's a bulb on the top, the transparent acrylic pipe on the bottom let the music flow into the greenhouse, flowing though them then us.

These are small part of my sketches, I only put on the part with high level of finishing. I used lots of images about plant to create the form, because this series of products is about environmental protection.
This part is a little bit harder than the last one, because this is a series of product. Three products must be associated with one another, so I spent lots of my time to organized the relationships among them.
Rendering These are household products, so it’s very important for them to fit into the environment. I used Rhinoceros and AutoCad to do the 3D modeling, then I used KeyShot and Photoshop to do the rendering to make sure they look perfect for home environment.

Lingpa is a handheld steamer specially designed for those who stay out. With the power of 940w, water capacity of 150ml, 21g/m of continuous steam, plastic housing, and ceramic hob, Lingpa is stylish and functional.
46
47
48
Initial Idea The traditional iron need a iron-board that occupies the space, and the garment steamer is even more space-occupied because of its water tank. I hope to design a hand-held steamer that is space-efficient, functional and easy to carry on.
49
50
Ideation Sketch
Final Sketch
I spent most of my time to find out the best shape for holding, then I picked up ten of them and add some scenarios to make them more specific and understandable.
I started to think about the details and the mechanism at the final stages of sketch. For example, the position of button, the parting line, the colors, etc.
Modeling & Testing
Rendering
I make a lot of models with yellow foam to make sure that the form of Lingpa will meet the requirements of human factor engineering. After that, I build the 3D model and printed it to make a prototype.
I used Rhinoceros and Autocad to 3D modeling, then I used Keyshot and Photoshop to rendering.
51
Ergonomics The form of Lingpa is fully based on ergonomics that allows maneuvering while the hand stays in a natural position that does not tire your wrist. This position eliminates the disease caused by the frequent repetition of complex and small movement, socalled RSI (repetitive strain injury), as well as much more frequent inflammation of the carpal tunnel. Moving the water tank into lower part to increase the capacity, and to balance the uneven weight cause by the internal machine.

INTERNSHIP AT ACER Learning Design Thinking
Acer Inc. is a Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics corporation specialising in advanced electronics technology and is headquartered in Xizhi, New Taipei City, Taiwan. It ranks No.4 for tatal PCs, and has a global workforce of 7400 employees. I participated in the summer intern program and work at Acer Design Studio.
64
65
My Work at Acer At first, it was a two-months intern program. My job is to reasearch about how to break the barriers between acer and young people. I learnt not only design thinking teamwork skills but also understanding the operation of company. After that, I got a one-year offer as a formal intern because of my outstanding performance. I work two days a week, directly with Acer designers to deal with the internal cases. For example, new smart phone research, defining new target audience and kids wearable.
66
A Corner Acer Design studio, also called A corner, is a place we use Design Thinking Methodology to carry out the projects. Acer worked with IDEO few years ago and sent their employees to the headquarters of IDEO to learn this methodology. My mentor Kristy was one of them, she is now a senior design manager who run this place.
Achievements After I presented my research about young people to my boss, the AVP of acer. He thinks that the leaders of the company should know about it, so I got a chance to presented directly to the CEO and VPs and AVPs. I'm the only intern to do that, it's really a special and wonderful experience.

Workshop Intro The topic of this workshop is "The complexity of pleasure". Instead of solving the problems, we trying to redefine the possibilities of design to explore the possibilities of "Design as a research method" and "Design as a thinking tool". Experience In this workshop, I practicing conceptual, critical, speculative design approaches, and exploring future scenarios and new possibilities through design. It's really happly to be here and work with people from different universities.

Ascend to another stage of life is always perplexing, on the one hand we look forward to the upcoming challenges, on the other hand we are afraid to leave the comfort zone. The growth process is always accompanied by the sadness of lost and the pleasure of found, that is the complexity of pleasure we are trying to talk about.
We used the image of sushi train to present the concept of growth. Different objects are the metaphors of different stage of life. At the beginning of this video is a birthday hat, which imply the birth. At the ending of this video is a couple have a baby, which imply the end of the story and a new beginning.
