Gratosoglio is a neighborhood and an ancient parish of Milan, located on the southern outskirts of the city. Today the entire Gratosoglio community is in a state of decline. The empty site and increasingly dilapidated facilities make this place worse and worse. In the early stage of this project, under the guidance of Professor Briata , we analyzed the people and activities here, and tried to find some "affordance". Later, based on these previous investigations, we focused the design on the empty square in the middle and the transitional space around the square connected to the bottom of the tower. Hope to improve this place through a series of simple architectural and landscape design.

In 21st century Europe is ageing very fast, technology is developing even faster, social and environmental issues are demanding from all of us new ethical behaviors. Under this complex scenario, the design involves mainly two age groups (older people and students) and two spatial types (urban space and housing). The concept for urban design is to make a “green tide” floodes this urban area to add more natural things. So the green flows in our site, where it is divided into upper and lower world. The lower part is condensed and energetic with many urban activities meet here. The upper part is more pure and quiet with grassland.

For the housing design in this site, we would like to develope a kind of space that provide people more opportunities to communicate with each other. In 2020, because of covid-19, many people have to live a completely home life for a long time and feel bad on contacting with outside world even through Internet. So we think it’s important for living space that can provide opportunity to build relationship with different people.

The residential part starts from the first floor and goes up. Each building is almost one or two independent houses. In order to enhance the communication between them, we increased the area of the stairs and balconies, giving them not only their own functions, but also providing a more comfortable place for them to meet and communicate with each other.

S uz ho u C r e e k , l o c a t e d a t t he intersection of three different district in Shanghai, in which has numerous bright and modern buildings around its bank, is facing a serious population loss and deteriorating in living environment regardless there are a distinctive development happened in this city. And when I got a deeper observation and research in this area, I found that there are a large number of negative gaps between buildings or constructions, in which vagrant, cleaners, security guards, courier, takeaway and other people who do not have a fixed indoor work place have their own daily activities in the gap spaces. So, what I wish is to regenerate the gap spaces by most simple and cheap ways to provide these people who have no interior work a suitable and humane place to work and live, which also will bring a urban rejuvenation at whole Suzhou Creek

In the 1950s and 1960s, Nanjichang Community used to be the most modern congregated house in Taipei, while it has been one of the most underprivileged area in the city. There was originally a community primary school in this site, which has been suffering from the decreasing of students, with the gradual downfall of the community. This design focus on exploring possibilities and methods to keep the primary school while activating the whole community for sustainable urban and regional development.

Top-Down Organization

In view of the limited area of the site and the special users, I compared five different spaces, and finally selected spiral ramps, rolling roofs, terraces, enclosed air corridors and cantilevered spaces that are more suitable for children and elder people in this community complex.

New Deal in Nanjichang Community

Old Community In the 1950s, the most modern social housing in Taiwan was built in this community. As time goes by, the community gradually went into decline. Now, only the elderly, migrants and poor or disabled families live here. Due to poor management and politics, more and more street vendors come here. The rate of juvenile delinquents is also soaring. Many young people have moved out of the community, so the number of pupils here is getting smaller and smaller. Now the school is in danger of being abandoned.

New Life

I plan to turn the elementary school into a community complexwhich not only has ordinary functions , but also provides special spaces for planting, for which the residents can take these vegetable to community kitchens for cooking, so as to solve the food problems of poor households and lonely elderly people.

I choose to retain some of the functions of the school and bring about new functional spaces in the community complex, including the library, metro station, community canteen and gymnasium, which can attract more young people back to the community and breath new life into the community.

“ Village in City” is a special phenomenon in China cit y development. Nowadays,it shows more and more contradictory. For example, in 2017, after a deadly fire, the Beijing government demolished villages in city populated by migrant workers, which evict tens of thousands. So what I concerned about was how to change the living mode of village in city and how to coexist with village in city.

The Demolition Story of Village in the City

Shenzhen is the most representative city in China's urbanization. It has grown from a small fishing village to an international metropolis in only 30 years, which is unique in the world. With the rapid development, most urban residents are or have been “migrant workers”. According to the Shenzhen Statistics Bureau, in recent years, Shenzhen has attracted an average of 6.5 million migrant workers every year. More and more migrant have to work all day for a small shelter. And in this process, the first problem they usually face is to find a foothold in the city.

Almost every young person who comes to work in Shenzhen, settle in the village in the city like Gangxia.

Overlooking Gangxia village

People pay a cheap rent and squeeze in a dark and damp room.

However, in the first-tier cities, new migrants have no choice but living the Gangxia village, for which there are no residential community provide them with relatively low-cost housing and convenient facilities. Therefore, in a sense, the existence of Gangxia village makes it possible for this group to survive in the city.

The space between the buildings is very narrow, and many of the rooms don't get sunlight.

The crowded dusty street

The narrow space between buildings

It carries too much power consumption here. The crazy wires posed the fire hazard.

After the renovation, most young people unable to bear the burden of the high rents.

The entrance of Gangxia village

The low high-density housing In order to avoid accidents, the government has to dismantle these buildings.

Due to its location in the center of the city, the rent will be very high.

In this situation, young people have to look for new cheap houses.

People have to move their families to find new places to live in.

leisure space

parking space

There are various daily activities, in the stairwell, for which I hope to reserve the place and attach new life for it. Even the original stairwell is crowded and humid, it almost becomes the place where public events can always take place. Sometimes, it is a living room, storage room, other times, it can be a parking lot or even a retail space for temporary vendors.

storage space

According to the statistical classification of the original house height in the base, village in city, the above five types of heights are summarized, and the next step is to prepare for the screening of the first phase of the project frame.

By selecting the higher part of the original house and carrying out streamline analysis based on personnel activities and daily moving lines, the initial form of the enclosed route network is also the original framework of the first phase of the project.

After taking the previous step, the redundant lines are removed through screening to form a relatively complete and centralized primary road network. In addition to the large and small loops, the outer side also connects them through a loop.

Through the topological deformation of the road network, it not only reflects the situation that the unit of the project is attached to the core tube and grows along the road network, but also forms a good pedestrian scale.

The cavity of the primary road network serves as the node of the cross-connection of the secondary road network, which extends naturally downwards. The layered road network enriches the spatial communication mode in the vertical direction and forms a lively living community.

After the project has formed a mature shared community in the later stage, the original urban village no longer exists. Only some low-volume masses are reserved on the ground level to form a park slope, which greatly releases the spatial scale pressure of the urban boundary surface. A harmonious ecological community that is integrated into one.

retail space

When the old town village is demolished, the new structural system begins to intervene from staircase. The “skeleton” of the new community will be built.

When the renovation of the original buildings are completed, the village will become a memory, where the sun can re-enter the Gangxia, and the old village in the "engulfing" process will become new public event space.

It is a common phenomenon that many new migrants have not accumulated much capital when they first came to the city to start their career. But as they gain experience working in big cities, salaries increase, funding increases and there is a growing need to improve living space. So the living units could be continuously upgraded or expanded. This living mode consists of the most basic bedroom and bathroom as the most basic and smallest unit. On this basis, the living space can be expanded in all directions and in various forms.

2018: Living in Gangxia Gangxia village is currently the only “village in city” located in the CBD of Shenzhen. The traffic here is convenient, and the bustling downtown is only a few blocks away. Because of cheap rents and convenient traffic, a large number of young people gathered here. On the one hand, the village in the city is full of vitality from the architectural landscape and the social activities, while the dirty environment and the closed space mode limit the further possibilities of resident’s daily life. Due to the crowded and dark living environment, for many people, Gangxia is more like a hotel which is just a place to sleep, rather than a home.

2023: Renewal of Gangxia According to the government urban planning, the city is constantly being renewed, and the original villages will generally be replaced by neat, modern high-rises. The memories of the city will be completely eradicated with the excavators, and the original residents will also be evacuated. Therefore, I want to design a different way to renew the city, which allow the new block grow progressively to “swallow up” old buildings. In this way, while new buildings and the city are growing and expanding, the residents can still live in their original homes.

2028: An Ideal Community As David Harvey said:” The right to the city is far more than the individual liberty to access urban resources: it is a right to change ourselves by changing the city.” Therefore, I consider that a city changes through participation and constant creation. I hope to create a highly personalized and customized community, giving residents ample personality development space and communication opportunities, thereby enhancing the quality of life , and inspiring more possibilities. In this community, houses can be expanded as people’s income or demand increasing where they can also choose their own neighbors and living mode acccording to their interests.

With the development of technology, we can generate more and more complex shapes and spaces in computers. However, the current digital construction technology requires very expensive equipment and very limited materials. So many non-linear shapes are difficult to achieve manually. In this project, we tried to use AR glasses, with the most common and cheap materials to complete a complex pavilion by most traditional ways, our hands.

Fabrication

Preparation of transverse rebar In this pavilion design, the rebar is used as the material of the structural skeleton. The rebar in the horizontal and vertical direction forms the final integrated skeleton. After formation and optimization of the form, the horizontal skeleton is an arc with three control points.

STEP1

Measurement of the required rebar length.

STEP2

Cutting of the rebar

STEP3

Bending of the rebar

First, we use the computer to calculate the required length of an arc using the computer. There are 281 pieces of arc in total. Then, measure and mark them one by one.

Cut the rebar one by one according to the marked position.

The arc is controlled via the control of the descending distance according to the working principle of the pipe blender.

STEP1

STEP2

STEP3

STEP4

AR comparison

After the connection with the AR, every five pieces of arc are put into one group, and the standard arc seen via the AR glasses are drawn on the floor.

STEP5

Correction of the radian

Compare the bent rebar with the standard arc. Make use of the flexibility of the rebar, and make fine adjustments of the rebar form.

Preparation of longitudinal rebar Excluding directional differences, the longitudinal r e b a r f e a t u r e s t he m u l t i sectional folding line, whose form is even more complex than that of the transverse rebar, thus being more difficult in processing. Positioning and connection with AR

Bend at the position of a big angle

Set the positioning of the AR at the central point of the bending tool.

Bend at the position of a small angle

Since the angle is smaller, it is even more difficult to control the angle. The AR is used to enable operation while comparison of the shape.

STEP4

Re-comparison of the shape

After all bending is finished, the secondary comparison is made, and the rebar with a huge difference in shape is selected out for readjustment.

STEP5

Coding and classification

Since the position and the shape of every rebar are different, the rebar already finishing rending is numbered with those similar in position put into the same group

Welding block by block Since the structural skeleton is large but the processing site and tool are limited, the s ke l e t o n i s d e c o m p o s e d i n t o 22 b l o c ks f o r t he convenience of processing and transportation.

STEP5

Numbering and transportation

Sort out every required rebar according to the number and grouping.

Fix several rebars to be welded according to the rebar position in AR glasses.

Conduct welding of every connecting point.

Considering errors in the welding process, the welding form is trimmed and slightly adjusted via AR glasses.

Number every block of the skeleton according to the position, and transport them to the construction site.

STEP3

STEP4

STEP5

Assembly and construction Transport the skeleton and sunlight plate, already prepared, to the construction site for painting and assembly.

Selection of the positioning point and AR

Choose the specific position for the construction of the pavilion, and use the AR glasses to guide the assembly of different parts.

Connection of various skeleton blocks

Weld every decomposed skeleton block together according to the position of the skeleton via AR glasses to finally finish the construction of the whole skeleton.

Painting

The white waterproof paint is used to paint every part of the skeleton to achieve an aesthetic look and to prevent rustiness of the rebar.

Installation of the sunlight plate

Trim and punch the sunlight plate, and fix the sunlight plate of different colors and lengths to the designated position according to instructions of AR glasses.
