WEEK ONE

As I read from the reading, “Architecture needs to be thought of less as a set of special material products and rather more as range of social and professional practices that sometimes, but by no means always, lead to building”. The social, culture, environment and professional practices are the important impact for the architecture design, and architecture needs to be analysed as discourse. My second personal project from ADS2: water, it is to design a boathouse near the Yarra River. The most important is to make the dialogue between the design and the environment. I decided to give this design three propose: • Environmental – friendly boathouse which is not a building but a part of nature. (The boathouse in the nature) • The boathouse which represents the nature with the design motive of the Yarra River flow, water’s movement and landscape features. (The boathouse containing the nature) • The boathouse in which the nature and human beings by communication human with the nature. (The boathouse in which the nature and human beings coexist) It follows the idea from Mis Van der rohe, “environmental – friendly and less is more” , “Beauty is the radiance of truth, we want an order that gives each thing its proper place, and we want to give each thing what is suitable to its nature”, and using the glass wall to give more interaction between inside and outside of the building. Additionally, the boathouse established the main access circulation by the axis which crossing the south part of the site, securing the smooth access circulation towards the square parts and the curved cafe area.

The predominately structure and geometric, the design from Virtural Environments in first year has a subtle contrast of the nature and recyclable formal characteristic. It simply combined with several triangles, the model shows the idea of reducing peacefully and nicely, it also linked the concepts, techniques and designs developed during the first semester in the university. However, most of the techniques has been showed when the design approaching to the end.

The Gwangji Museum Of Art

The concept of this museum is “The Linked”, everything connects to all things. It has been divided into two parts: circulation spaces consisting of two parallel lines and a mass filing up the two lines. The two lines are defined as urban cultural link and natural landscape link, respectively. The mass is defined as a mediator to link dual structures such as nature and art, fastness and slowness, display and rest. The composition for display and circulation spaces does not regulate the circulation of spectators objectively but subjectively in accordance with their will. After I read this museum, I was thinking about the layout of my previous design of boathouse. The plan need more work and the relationship between each room are not really shows the concept of the design, and, for the next design task I should try to keep the concept strongly enough till end.

The most impressive architecture is Gwangji Museum of Art that I saw it in the Architecture Competition Annual. It is a fantastic museum with the artful ideas designed by HEERIM Architects and Planners/ Jeong Young Kyoon, Kim Seo Kyoon. According to the reading for this week, Architecture and Visual Culture, this museum is also a good example to be analysed as discourse, mainly about the way that the building “talk about the arts”. In particular, Gwangju Museum of Art has avoided centralism from the view of location. This museum, expected to be established at a corner of a large park, was considered a background for human liberty and natural environments rather than a centre. It was thought that various cultural facilities which were distributed inside the park without any order needed to be newly regulated due to a newly constructed museum.

Ren (people’s Building) Shanghai, China

I Saw this building in the TED talk by Bjarke Ingels. His ‘3 wrap- speed architecture tales’ intruduced the Ren (People’s building). This building is the previous design for Danmark pavillion in Expo 2010. However, it didn’t show up at the end. when the architect Danish introduced this building to Chinese government, they felt excited that this building could act as a discourse for Chinese people due to it looks like the same with Chinese character “people”.

The REN building is a proposal for a hotel, sports and conference center for th World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The building is concieved as two buildings merging into one. The first building, emerging from the water, is developed to the activities of the body, and houses the sports and water culture center. The second building emerging from land, is developed to the spirit and enlightenment, and houses the conference center and meeting facilities. The two buildings meet in a 1000 room hotel, a building for living. The building becomes the chinese sign for “The People”, and recognizable landmark for the world Expo in China.
