REINTERPRETED CLASSIC MING CHAIR WITHIN CONTEMPERARY CONTEXT 6

Story telling method

Travel is imagined, described and sensed. This bench embodies that, it’s curves representing travelers gathering around or travel paths to a space (the seat). The joint details portray people meeting and embracing each other. This imaginary expression is also a traditional belief in Ming chairs. I selected one type of Ming chair, Quanyi, in which the round back curve represents the sky, and the squared seat the earth. When one sits in the chair, one is embraced by the universe. In this project, I have used storytelling as a method to reinterpret the Ming chair and move it away from conventions.

Process MING CHAIR x TRAVEL CONCEPT

1

Inspired by my own traveling experiences.Share Ming chair history and exchange view points with international friends.

2

Use Laser-cutting machine to make deconstructed Ming chair curves.

3

Using those curves to remake various chair mockups with friends.

4

Select and make my final chair models. 9

Mockups I find that the chair shape would be too complicated to produce (with multiple curves) after examining all the mockups. I wanted to develop an easier production process so I decided to just include the ‘U’ and ‘L’ curves in the final design.curve in the end. I wanted to create a travelling feeling by repeating the same curve. By doing this it would create the sensation of a journey. Curves are connected in unexpected ways to represent those surprises in my own travelling experiences.

10

Details While traveling, I always have to adapt to new environments. This subconscious feeling has led to the joinery design of the bench. This ‘hugging’ joint represents the support I have always experienced from new friends around the world while we were travelling on the same path.

Playful figure Wood workshop Upholstery masters

In cooperation with the kindergarten we held a workshop so that my partner and I could find out the needs of the children in the context of the library space. Through our research and the workshop we came up with a number of keywords; playful, colour and interactive movement. For this project, myself and my partner were in charge of designing and building the wooden frame and the appearance (with upholstery completed). Once the wooden frame was completed we handed it over to the upholstery students to complete the work. We met with them beforehand and discussed our ideas about how we imagined the final product to be. One thing they advised us was that the piece needed to be taken apart, so that it could be reupholstered in the future. We took this into consideration when constructing the wooden frame. 15

Pocket

Texture

A pocket was included for personal belongings or extra book storage. Watch out! because it might bite your finger.

Instead of a flat surface on the seating area, we wanted to make it more tactile so we designed the seat upholstery to be ribbed.

Movement We designed the feet to have a slight angle on the bottom so that the user could rock from side to side. Our research told us that having a slight rocking motion can actually help the user to focus and concentrate.

We wanted to add a natural touch into the design, so we chose to make the major facial elements in Ash wood. 17

The circle diameter is the same as the wideth of the thin bar. The diamod shape is a circumscribed square.

Place the bar in vertically from above so that it fits into the thin rounded hole.

Turn the exposed diamond face of the bar clockwise to lock the construction.

FURNITURE CAN BE A FOREVER PET THAT MAKES SPACE ALIVE & JOYFUL

Material : Various wood speices, Leather Dimensions : 42x42x50 cm, 40x40x45 cm, 46x46x38 cm 23

Details

Birdy stool is inspired by an early morning woodturning practice together with the pleasant chinese bulbul bird's sounds upon the branches. Every stool represents distinctive character due to the wooden grain arrangment and the leg shape. The design purpose is to leave a satisfied and joyful sensation into a simple furniture.

25

Process

The idea was easy but the process is complicated. By gluing pieces of wood into rings and turning them into a hollow round shape instead of having a solid wooden log, I can make good use of the most material and reduce a lot of weight. Personal belongings can be stored within the stool. The leather bags was made with a mode and the palm was carved by hand. This project had been ordered and reproduced for private collection.

FROM AN ABSTRACT CONCEPT TO A SOILD PIECE OF FURNITURE

30

Location research

+ Material experiment

About The inspiration comes both from the floodgate in Dals LĂĽnged and from a messy table top. The main concept is developed from two facts I discovered from examining the floodgate. One is the internal body of water in the lock chamber which forming patterns. The other contrast effect is water as a natural soft material trapped by the man-made metal frame. I have used elastic fabric and leather to illustrate accumulation because they are shaped by and highlights the objects they contain. The less it contains, the more organized you are.Plus, wooden structure, three different materials with similar color present a playful metaphor to tell another way of organizing the table. 31

32

How to increase the awareness of accumulation?

Strechy fabric reveals how much you accumulate. When it is too much loaded, the fabric will go so low and reach the user's leg.

Japanese craftmanship inspired

OTHER EXPERIENCE Since 2008 I started my self practice in woodworking together with my bachelor education. I am deeply influented by Japanese craftsmanship in my early furniture design. To examine my joinery skill, I took a national Cabinet making certificate in Taiwan. Now I hold class B. My craft skills got me the chance to work with exclusive market. One is to work with Fine writing international Ltd. company and the other is a Tea house.

TEA CULTURE EXHIBITION IN TAIPEI WISTARIA TEA HOUSE 40

41

About Objects&furniture: I colloect lots of short wasted material from the wood sawmill and intuitively carve them into a sculptual container for tea. Each teascoop takes me 3 days to complete. 2mm thickness allow the user to feel the delicacy and the outline diversity. I carved at least 20 tea scoop for the exhbibiton.I also make table, accessory and serving tray. In a tea ceremony, tea scoop is used as a tea server passing around people for them to smell the tea before tea got pured into the teapot.
