Recipes by the Sea If you are celebrating St. Patricks Day but not a fan of traditional Irish fare, then this meal is for you. I’m not a fan of haggis or tripe myself, but have always loved shepards pie. Traditionally made with lamb, I make mine with either ground beef or turkey. My kids love it and this version is a fun way to make individual pies!

Baked Potato Shepards Pie

8 large russet potatoes scrubbed and baked 1 lb. lean chopped beef 2 cloves chopped garlic 1/ 1/2 cups frozen peas 1/4 cup worstershire sauce 1/2 tsp dried rosemary 1/2 stick of butter 1 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp paprika 1 medium onion finely chopped 1 1/2 cups sliced carrots 15 oz can of beef broth 1/4 cup of ketchup 2/3 cup sour cream 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Allow the baked potatoes to cool slightly and take a thin slice off the top so that at least 2/3 of the potatoe remains. Scoop out the cooked potato leaving a small amount remaining near the skin. Place all of the scooped poatao into a bowl and add butter, sour cream, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, cheese, salt and pepper. Mash with a potato masher until well blended, the mixture will be stiff. In large pan, brown the meat and drain the fat. Add onions, rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 3-4 minutes and add the beef broth, worstershire, ketchup and carrots. Simmer on low heat for 15 minutes until the carrots are tender. Add the peas and cook for 3 minutes. Thicken gravy now if desired. Spoon mixture into hollowed out potatoes. Spoon potato mixture on top and return to 375 degree oven for 20 minutes until heated through and tops of the potatoes are browned. Enjoy!!

Healthy Morsels, II Why is it Important to Feed Ourselves Well? by Lynn O’Hara

Why is it important to feed ourselves well? After all, junk tastes so good. It’s also debatably cheaper, easier to find and purchase, and quicker to feed ourselves with. Many, many people eat very poorly. They also may suffer from a variety of ailments and be overweight. Is every person who eats poorly ill and overweight? Not at all but if a person eats poorly for a long time they will undoubtedly become not well. Some of the problem with people feeling the need to eat better is instant gratification. It is hard to avoid the yummy junk food in the moment if the motivation to not eat it is something we are working toward. Great tasting now versus feeling better in a few months? Hmmm. Difficult choice. But here’s the thing. Humans are remarkably able to tolerate discomfort for a very long time. When we eat poorly we may not feel sick immediately (although sometimes we do). What is more likely to happen is that our health starts to decline ever so slowly. A couple pounds added here and there doesn’t often register until we go up a size or two in clothing. The same happens with our health. Maybe we start to have a slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar. Maybe sleep becomes disturbed. Maybe we start to have aches and pains or shortness of breath when we walk from a parking lot into a store. Before we know it we are diagnosed with high blood pressure and type II diabetes. The doctor gives a pill or two and off we go with still no motivation to eat well because now we have a pill or two to control things. But here’s a question; how bad does it have to get before you realize you need to make some changes?

Volume 5, Issue 62

This isn’t a scare tactic. It’s an honest Lynn O’Hara, MS, RD, LPC Licensed Psychotherapist question and a desire to have people Registered Dietitian check in with how they are feeling. (732) 899-9312 How do you feel? Are you happy www.lynnoharalpc.com with your health and weight? Are you happy with how you move in this world? If the answer is anything other than yes you’ll want to take stock of what you can do to help yourself feel better. Eating well and not too much or too little of wholesome foods prepared with reverence for your body is the best thing you can do for yourself to affect your health. We seem to have forgotten how important it is to eat well. The food industry doesn’t really care if you eat healthy as long as they keep making money. Did you know that scientists worked on Dorito’s flavoring until they found a flavor that your taste buds wouldn’t get tired of? The more you buy the more money they make. There is no vested interest in you eating well by anyone. It has to be done by you and for you. Each one of us needs to have a vested interest in eating well so that we can feel our best. And if we do that, if we eat well with lots of fresh, organic or farm raised fruits, veggies, meats if desired, etcetera and we avoid the junk, processed food we will feel better-guaranteed. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy!

Rover Rescue When is the Right Time to Welcome a Dog into the Family? by Lauren Kehoe

Growing up, all dogs were the greatest! No matter the size, shape, color, I wanted to meet them all and sweep them up in a giant hug. The idea of all dogs having their own personality and different comfort levels with new people meant nothing; every face I looked into held a friend. Just because I loved all dogs doesn’t mean they all loved me. Though I managed to avoid being bit until later on in life, I was lucky. I lacked knowledge and experience to allow each dog their beingness, and can thank my parents for their diligence in watching over me and teaching me how to respect boundaries.

to get a pup is up to the parents and how much work they would like to put in to it. Even if a child is able to hear and comprehend instructions, their memory or willpower may not be steadfast. Being present as an interpreter or in between for dog and child communication helps both sides.

Puppies are commonly portrayed as blank slates, but they can be jumpy and mouthy with sharp nails and poor bite inhibition. Puppies and babies growing up together is a lot of work. Not all behavior quirks in dogs are learned, some are present from birth. Just as we can’t expect kids to be perfect around dogs, we cannot expect puppies to be perfect around children. Both are still learning about the world around them and themselves, and at times are on sensory overload. A puppy’s personality actually may be more unpredictable than an adult dog, as it continues to develop and change until they are about two years old.

All dogs are individuals, with unique brains and exciting stories. Some dogs may thoroughly enjoy the affection of children, but assuming all dogs mirror this image can be dangerous and naive. Dogs give signs they are uncomfortable, some subtle and some more clear. Growling or fleeing are easily identified, though kids may need to be reminded how to respond accordingly. When a body stiffening or lip licking is difficult to spot by adults, it is nearly impossible to children. Even the most tolerant dog can be pushed to the point of a warning snap. The best way to ensure everyone’s safety is to supervise dogs and children, while trying to teach kids to be attentive to a dog’s body language from a young age.

Children and dogs can be great companions for each other. Overcautious is better than under, you can never keep them too safe. A child or dog may possess challenging traits, but the majority are manageable. It is okay to give the two breaks or repeat a safety measure. In the end, the bond that is formed is worth the extra effort.

The question of “When is my child old enough to get a dog?” arises often. If there is already a dog in the family, the best thing to do is monitor the two and separate if unable to do so. If not, when

Back to Earth Just Breathe by Natalie Berko

Atmospheric pollution is a pressing topic in the media right now, but our indoor air quality is often two to five times worse! Chemicals given off by carpets, paint, and cleaning supplies can linger in the air and cause health issues, according to the American Lung Association. The particles of concern are the ones you can’t see. As more information and data emerges, experts predict that the global air purifier market will grow at a rate of 9 to 12 percent annually between now and 2023, having it valued at over $33 billion in only three years. Air purifiers eliminate health hazards caused by poor air quality by removing contaminants, including tobacco smoke. Further, they are beneficial for people with allergies and asthma. The very first air purifying apparatus was developed by Lewis P Haslett and patented in 1848. In the 1850’s John Stenhouse used charcoal filters to clean the air, which led to the development of the masks used in London factories to protect workers from toxic gases. Almost a century later, the US Atomic Energy Commission invented the HEPA filter to clean air that had been contaminated by radioactive particles. After World War II, it was released to the general public and is now used by air purifier companies as a heavy-duty filtration device. In the 1960s a German engineer developed a simple air purifying system. It compressed a filter pad attached by magnets, which trapped dust in the air. This purifying system was the first that could be used within households. Today the clean breathing craze proves that you can put a price on fresh air. Tech companies are finding innovative and lucrative ways to clean the air in our homes, while sales of purifying plants are blooming. The race is on to create a product that meets the rising consumer demand. Companies like Molekule

Volume 5, Issue 62

and Dyson have recognized that people are willing to pay a premium for large air purification units that remove and destroy Natalie Berko pollutants from the air. Two-thirds of the Certified population are expected to live in cities by Crystal Healer 2050, in response device manufactures are turning their focus to make these machines smaller. Air-quality sensors that allow users to gauge the level of impurities in their homes are also becoming more accessible to the average consumer. Intellipure is taking sensor tech a step further by developing a program to monitor outdoor and indoor air quality and can help you the difference. It may alert you that your bedroom is high in particulate matter, but the outdoor air quality is better – so you may want to open a window. What we will see is a shift away from portable units to integrated systems that are controlled by your home’s HVAC system or something like Google Nest. Wearable technology could even make it possible to take air-quality measurements on the go with you. For example, when you’re walking to work, your smartphone may guide you to the path with the best air quality. Dyson has already been experimenting on this front. As part of a 2019 study, the company worked with Kings College London to outfit 250 school children with backpacks equipped with air quality monitors. Armed with the knowledge of 490 million measurements, 31 percent of the children changed their daily commute to and from school in order to reduce their exposure to London’s air pollution. Research like this proves that when we have the tools to understand air quality, we make better choices. Environmental circumstances have created a need for the air purification market. With these new tools and knowledge we can hope that we will make better choices and be able to breathe a little easier.

The Power of Positive Thinking You Don’t Have to Do It All by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT

Are you the type to create to-do lists? Do you try and organize yourself, your career, your children? Have you read those articles on how to successfully do this or that? I have even written some of those how-to articles and I’ll admit, there are consequences to doing it all. “No matter how hard you try, you cannot be all things to all people. Let’s face it, you can’t do it all.” There is always more and there will always be more to do. I know what I want in my life and I know how to organize those areas of my life to make them successful, but it doesn’t come without exhaustion s ometimes. Sometimes I even convince myself to go a little bit harder or a little bit longer. I understand the push or the need to do more or the push to have more. Perhaps like me, you put others in front of your own needs. Let me just get the kids situated and then I’ll eat. Sound familiar? This is just a quick fix until the next action item needs to be addressed.

Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of the Coastal Cottage 64 Bridge Avenue Bay Head, NJ 08742

Our society has ingrained in us that being busy means we are successful. You might even be stressed about being stressed. Isn’t putting the oxygen mask on yourself first on the plane before helping others a successful approach? You need to consciously know when enough is enough. Retrain your brain to care for yourself and your needs prior to others all the time. Your body will start to send you little alarms that it is tired and needs a break. If you do not listen it will start to break down on you. Your sleep will be interrupted. You may even start to experience adrenal fatigue type symptoms. If you know you need a change or even a slight moderation to the rate you are functioning at try a few of these tips. First and foremost, before you tweak anything, ask yourself this question every time. “Does this bring me joy?” When you have two minutes to rub together you need to be certain that you are doing something because it brings you joy or happiness. Otherwise, you are doing something out of obligation. If this obligation is “necessary” then you need to view as such and be ok with your decision. For example, I need to feed the children first then I can make myself something. We love our children so this obligation is acceptable to us but be sure that you make something for you that you will enjoy. Start to assess other situations or tasks in your life similarly. Maybe you need to say no to a social gathering because it may stress you out with other things you would joyfully like to get done. Saying no is ok. Maybe your children are younger than mine and you need to forgive yourself for happily going out with your girlfriends for a few hours while leaving the children with a sitter. Maybe you don’t want to work out in the morning but would much rather do it in the evening. Your time is precious. “At the end of the day, if you don’t feel good because you’re not taking care of yourself, what’s the point?” Find your balance. Wherever you are not feeling joy or happiness, make a change. Take the time for you. You can still be successful, in fact, you may be even more successful and much happier. It worked for me.
