MEDICAL CANNABIS CONNECTION A pioneer in medical marijuana, Dr. Anthony Anzalone (NJ) leads the discussion of his show, “Medical Cannabis Connection”. This is a show for public discussion about how medical cannabis has changed so many lives. Dr. Anzalone will take callers during every podcast. Each hour will be categorically driven. For example, shows like “Seizures and medical cannabis” for instance. Dr. Anzalone has had thousands of patients, many of whom came from pain management and taking highly addictive opiates. Dr. Anzalone’s former patients stopped taking opiates at a 45% rate. Quitting opiates altogether. These are your neighbors and friends who now have an alternative option in states that qualify. Let’s talk medical marijuana. Let’s hear from patients. Let’s talk about the facts. It’s the “Medical Cannabis Connection!”

Healthy Morsels, II Listen to Your Inner Voice by Lynn O’Hara

Hello May. Spring has sprung and we are emerging. We are emerging from winter, although this weekend as I write it’s darn cold! We are emerging from isolation. We are like the seeds planted in my garden just starting to poke our heads out into the world. Many of us don’t feel too safe as of yet and others can’t wait to get out and about. It’s a strange place we sit in right now. There is so much uncertainty and we are not used to uncertainty. It’s not a place many of us are comfortable residing in. But here’s the thing, we really can’t control much right now. We have to become used to the idea that uncertainty is all around. So what does this mean?

Lynn O’Hara, MS, RD, LPC Licensed Psychotherapist Registered Dietitian (732) 899-9312 www.lynnoharalpc.com

Well, let’s go back to the seeds that I planted in my garden. They sit in darkness yet somehow they know which way to grow to find the light. Slowly they push upward, through the dark, through the dirt until eventually they send a tentative shoot out into the open air. What if we acted like a seed during these weird, dark times? What if we tentatively, yet confidently reached for what we needed to survive? Just sit with this for a moment. I’m not suggesting you push yourself to go out into the world tentatively or confidently. I’m suggesting that you turn to your inner world and listen, really listen to what your feelings are telling you. Maybe you need to not go out just yet because you don’t feel safe. That is something you know in this time of unknowing. Maybe you need to get out into the sunlight and move your body. Great! Something else you do know. Our inner worlds are full of wisdom and a sense of knowing that we could benefit from right now. We may not know what is happening in our outer worlds but we can tune in and know what is happening in our inner worlds. What happens next? We tentatively yet confidently hear our inner worlds needs and then what? We treat those parts of us as tenderly as we do the newly sprouted seeds. Those little seedlings need our care and attention. We water them gently and make sure no one tramples our little sprouts. The same goes for the parts of us that share what they need. We treat those little parts gently and with compassion. We don’t let anyone trample all over the newly sprouted needs. Think of it this way; we would get protective if someone walked all over our garden beds, right? So, say you voice a need and someone tells you it’s silly or ridiculous. Do you try to protect that part of yourself? I hope so because they are literally walking over your seedlings. It takes time and care to allow the newly sprouted parts of us to grow strong enough to withstand a tempest of any sort. Until that time we need to speak up for our needs. Take this time of weird uncertainty to go inward. Learn about your own inner world. It’s a rich place that is full of all that makes us who we are. The more we understand our inner world the less confusing the outer world becomes, even in these uncertain times. Stay well, stay safe, wash your hands and until next time, eat healthy, be happy.

Rover Rescue Is Off Leash Hiking Safe? by Lauren Kehoe

One of the biggest questions I get asked when adopters are choosing a dog is whether or not it is off leash trained. There is nothing quite like enjoying a hike in the middle of nowhere with your four-legged friend. Letting them off leash gives them freedom to explore at the pace of their nose. Relationship building and a solid training foundation are the first steps to unleashed adventures. It takes a little bit of practice but can be safely enjoyed taking some minor precautions. A huge part of off leash hiking is recall. The environment has many wild cards such as cars, other dogs, wildlife, traps, cliffs, holes. The ability to depend on a dog responding to the sound of its name and commands such as “come” can be vital. The beginning of recall training involves getting a dog’s attention. This could mean calling its name, clapping, whistling, etc. When adding a command such as “come” or “here”, it all comes down to making yourself the most important thing there is. Get excited when your dog comes to you, shower him or her with praise, offer lots of yummy high value dog treats. Recall training is best practiced in short, frequent sessions. Start out in a contained environment like a yard or on leash. Work up from easy with few distractions then slowly add in more appealing external factors. If a dog is struggling, work backwards and remove stimuli from the environment. Even if a dog seems to have the process down, you can never practice too much. Giving a dog freedom on trail means he or she is free to run endless circles and wear itself out logging double the mileage. Increasing a dog’s physical fitness, it can wade in a river or roll around in the grass. Off-leash hiking frees our wrist from constant tugging and eliminates the problem of leashes getting caught, twisted, and tangled. Recall builds and reinforces human to dog relationship, strengthening trust and the bond. Freedom to be a dog goes a long way in mental and physical well-being. While we can search for the most secluded trails, they are never without obstacles. Not all people like dogs and not all dogs like dogs. Letting a dog run up and bombard other hikers is poor trail etiquette and could be dangerous. Wild animals typically keep their distance from humans, but if they do not, you want your dog stuck to you like glue. Trails may have unpredictable landscapes that threaten safety, such as water, cliffs, quicksand, etc. Keep your eyes and ears open and stay aware of your surroundings. Unclipping a dog’s leash and letting them romp into the wilderness is extremely satisfying. Carrying the leash is a great safety back up. Watching and listening on the trail helps keep you and your pup safe while you both work your body’s and brains. Off leash hiking is an amazing environment to strengthen your bond with your dog, while keeping everyone healthy and happy.

Back to Earth Microgreens...Tiny Plants, Big Benefits by Natalie Berko

Microgreens are cropping up on sandwiches and salads everywhere giving kale some competition. They look like little sprouts and are a type of vegetable. Microgreens are seedlings harvested in the primary stage of the vegetable’s growth. There are around 60 different varieties and can come from everything from cauliflower to cabbage. These trendy veggies are four to forty times more nutrient-dense than their mature leaf counter parts and they are a hundred percent bioavailable. This means your body is able to absorb all the nutrient content. Which nutrients you’re getting depends on the kind of microgreen. For example cilantro microgreens are rich in beta-carotene, while red cabbage microgreens are particularly rich in vitamin C. A study from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry shows that microgreens have high levels of phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Because of the high level of antioxidants microgreens are considered a “functional food”, a food that promotes health or prevents disease.

Tiny but mighty and easy to grow, you can find kits online easily. Check of True Leaf Market for a user-friendly mini microgreen kit to give growing your own a try. They come Natalie Berko Certified with everything you need to get started, just Crystal Healer place them on your window sill and in seven to fourteen days they are ready to harvest. Microgreens can be incorporated into a variety of dishes or eaten raw with a little salad dressing. Mix them into a smoothie or grind them up with a food processor and fold them into baked goods, oatmeal, or pancakes. However you choose to take your greens you are sure to be getting a super shot if vitamins.

5 Big Benefits of Microgreens Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease Any plant-based food with fiber and vitamin K has the potential to lower blood pressure. Lowering your blood pressure helps lower your risk of developing heart disease. Lower Cholesterol Research has found that red cabbage microgreens can lower cholesterol as well as assist in weight loss when consuming an otherwise fatty diet. Ward Off Digestive Ailments The high probiotic fiber content in microgreens can help nourish the friendly probiotic organisms in your gut. These probiotic fibers stimulate the growth of intestinal bacteria associated with overall health and wellbeing. Boost Your Immune System Any vegetable has the potential to be anti-inflammatory and potentially affect immunity in a positive way. Microgreens pack a ton of these nutrients into an easy to eat package. Improve Eyesight If you find yourself squinting at the screen increase your leafy green intake. They contain lutein, a phytochemical implicated in vision health. Research confirms that lutein content in microgreens can help your eyes absorb excess light intensity that can reduce headaches or migraines.

Side Trip by Steve De Jacimo, Editor

Island Beach State Park I have lived in New Jersey for almost 20 years, and I finally found a park that I can say, “this is all me!” With crazy dunes and foothill-ish looking terrain, Island Beach State Park is an absolute gem of an area. And, it has not been touched (just a few state buildings, bathrooms and a nature center) by a housing developer, or any other type of developer for that matter. It sits as a reminder of what this area looked like 300, 1000, even 3000 years ago. Ok, so I didn’t do any research on 3000 years ago, but, you know what I mean. It’s desolate. It’s Primitive. It’s relaxing…..and there goes a fox.

My favorite part is the beach access. They tend to be these narrow, winding, shell-filled trails that lead across the mostly untouched dunes right to a very wide beach area. So wide, in fact, that you can grab a permit for your 4-wheel drive, lower the tire pressure, and drive on the beach. Yes. In New Jersey. I know. Who whadda thunk it?

As for social distancing. This is the best place. Small but accessible parking lots line the 10 mile Peninsula, so you only really see bigger lots for the swimming areas. Everything is low key. Joggers, bicyclists, walkers, hikers, all line the one road in…….and one road out setting.

The Power of Positive Thinking The Medicine is in the Hug by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT

Just two short years ago I was in the Cusco mountains of Peru hugging a llama. The picture of me and the llama showed up on my timeline and it got me to wondering. I’m in the middle of a pandemic and I haven’t received a hug from a friend in over two and a half months. What a difference two years can make. What a difference just a week or a day can make. It can make you reflect on how the little things in life we take for granted and yet how much that hug does to the human body. Hugging has an amazing emotion attached to it and is a natural medicine. “CAUTION: MAY BE ADDICTIVE…. but overdose is impossible. A 20 second hug releases the bonding hormone and neurotransmitter oxytocin, which is nature’s own anti-depressant and anti-anxiety substance.” In just those 20 seconds, your heart allows a connection and transfer of healing energy between both individuals. According to some research, four hugs are needed a day for survival, eight for maintenance, and a whopping twelve for growth. Twelve wouldn’t seem so strange, normally but in quarantine that could seem like an awful lot.

Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of the Coastal Cottage 64 Bridge Avenue Bay Head, NJ 08742

Hugging is also a form of communication without having to say a word. Is the hug tight, is it loose, is it around the neck, or is it around the waist? Our emotions are very much attached to how we hug one another. The embrace can be as deep as the emotion or as cordial to an acquaintance. A hug lends support for those in need and emphasizes compassion for that person and their situation. A reflection of social and physical well-being. In a recent study published in pubmed, “twenty romantic couples completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging session in which the female partner underwent a scan while her partner stood just outside the scanner and received unpleasant electric shocks.” The results, “support giving (holding a partner’s arm while they experienced physical pain), compared with other control conditions, led to significantly more activity in the ventral striatum, a reward-related region also involved in maternal behavior (p values < .05). Similar effects were observed for the SA, a region involved in both maternal behavior and fear attenuation. Results suggest that support giving may be beneficial not only for the receiver but also for the giver. Implications for the possible stress-reducing effects of support giving are discussed.” To continue on this study path, hugging has been scientifically proven to boost your heart health and protect against illness. This study was regarding the susceptibility to upper respiratory infection and illness. “Perceived support protected against the rise in infection risk associated with increasing frequency of conflict. A similar stress-buffering effect emerged for hugging, which explained 32% of the attenuating effect of support. Among infected participants, greater perceived support and more-frequent hugs each predicted less-severe illness signs. These data suggest that hugging may effectively convey social support.” Sage journals In addition to reducing fear, hugging can also help you to feel much happier and reduce pain. Being touch deprived can cause negative effects and science proves that regular hugs with those closest to you, even if brief, can have especially positive effects on your brain and body. The free feeling of being able to hug without fear for our health will come again soon. Keep thinking positive thoughts around the health and wellness of it and the benefits you receive versus the negative affects you may experience by not hugging. The absolute best thing about giving hugs is you can’t give one without receiving one. Sending you virtual {{HUGS}} In health and Wellness, Allison
