Back to Earth Crystal Facials by Natalie Berko
For thousands of years crystals have been used to enhance beauty and promote overall health throughout the world. In the last few years, crystals have had a resurgence in popularity within the beauty world. Today you can find creams and all different kinds of potions in chic skincare boutiques and spas. Products contained crushed or powdered gems even some with microparticals of gold! If having crystals in your products isn’t your thing, you can try them a la carte. Spas are offering crystal facials where an esthetician places special stones on your face. The crystals are placed on certain areas of the face and body corresponding with energy centers called “Chakras”. There are seven main Chakras in the body that are associated with different colors. These can be used as a sort of map to guide the esthetician in choosing the crystals for the treatment desired. Botanicals used in skincare are extracted for their chemical properties through an infusion of water, alcohol, or oil. Because it is impossible to transfer the chemical properties of gemstones in the same way as a plant, the aim is to capture their unique vibrational properties. The idea is that the thoughts in our minds can alter the molecules in our bodies. The human body is made up of energy and minerals not unlike that of crystals, so in theory we can transfer all those good vibes to our skin! Some of the essential stones for beauty include amethyst to calm inflammation or acne prone skin, hematite is great to energize tired puffy eyes and fluorite works wonders for relaxation. In general blue and purple crystals are more cooling in nature, oranges and reds will be more warming. Green and dark colored stones are considered more grounding and aide
in stress reduction. Among all the different sparkly gems rose quartz is the most commonly associated with skincare. Known for its loving energy it gets the heart pumping and promotes circulation key for healthy skin. Some estheticians even place their skincare products on rose quartz plates to infuse their products with extra beautifying energy!

Cleanse your space with a sage wand or some palo santo to clear out any stale or negative energy. 2. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser. 3. Exfoliate skin to get rid of any dead skin and allow for maximum vibe absorbtion! 4. Apply your favorite mask ( I love a good charcoal mask to get my pores nice and clear) and chill for ten minutes. 5. Once you wash off your mask, rinse your chosen stones with cool water. 6. Find a comfortable place where you can lay flat and feel relaxed (Candles and incense create a nice ambiance!) 7. While laying down carefully place your crystals on your face. (There is no wrong wat to place them, follow your intuition and do what feels best.) 8. Leave the crystals on your face for 15-20 minutes focusing on your breathe and relaxing. 9. After the time is up slowly ease yourself back into focus and remove the crystals. 10. Rinse your stones again and place them under the moonlight to recharge.

Boro Bucks Offers Monthly Specials and Property Tax Breaks Check Chamber Facebook Page for Monthly Specials by Denise DiStephan
Point Pleasant’s Boro Bucks card not only gives local residents a property tax break for shopping locally, but also offers monthly specials in Point Pleasant Borough and Point Pleasant Beach. Point Pleasant Borough residents who own or rent their homes can use the free Boro Bucks cards at participating local businesses in both towns to get a property tax discount and can use online coupons from the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce Facebook page to get monthly discounts at a few of the participating businesses. The purpose of the Boro Bucks program is for local businesses to get a boost in business by providing an incentive of a tax discount to local residents. For example, if the cost of a dinner for four at a participating restaurant with a 20 percent property tax rebate is $200, the resident paying the tab would present their Boro Bucks card with their payment, the card is swiped and a $40 tax credit (less program fees) is generated. Rewards are credited to the next property tax bill before the next tax bill is issued. A wide variety of local businesses, including clothing stores, restaurants, automotive shops and healthcare businesses are participants. Cards can be picked up at the following locations in Point Pleasant Borough: Point Pleasant Borough Hall, 2233 Bridge Ave., across from Community Park; the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, 2810 Bridge Ave. (call first since they are open only part-time hours (732) 295-8850); Investors Savings Bank, 2147 Bridge Ave.; TravelSmiths, 1101 Route 88 and Clark’s Landing, 847 Arnold Ave. The Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, TravelSmiths, Manasquan Bank, Investors Bank, and Clark’s Landing sponsor the Boro Bucks program.
YES!
Local residents use the card ID and PIN numbers of the back of their Boro Bucks card to register online and access more information, including names of participating businesses. Residents need their lot and block number to register. While registering, residents can check a box to indicate that that they own or rent their home. A check for tax rebates that tenants have accrued will be mailed to them annually. A $7 check handling fee will be deducted from the accumulated rebates. “Many local businesses are participating because doing so gives them exposure through substantial marketing, branding and promotion by the Borough at no cost to them,” according to FinCredit Inc. as stated on its www.propertytaxcard.com website. FinCredit runs Boro Bucks locally as one of the local shopping rewards programs it operates nationally. “Most merchants already offer discounts and promotions (such as coupons, Groupons, etc),” the Finn site says. “However to advertise discounts is in itself a very expensive proposition. Adding a Shop Local reward program to their existing marketing campaign would improve their exposure in the local market.” Residents can obtain as many cards as they want, so multiple members of a household can use them. To access links for more information for residents as well as businesses interested in participating, visit the Borough’s municipal website at www.ptboro.com and click on “Boro Bucks” in the top right corner. The Boro Bucks web page has a list of participating businesses and the percentage tax rebate offered by each. For updates on monthly specials, follow the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Parental Guidance A Simple, “Hello” is All it May Take By Maureen Whelan
Many parents look to September with excitement of a new chapter for their children, though there are a few that will be filled with sadness again, for their child’s story ended abruptly. These are the parents that suffered an unimaginable loss, parents of children who committed suicide. I can’t even begin to understand what that might feel like. Recently, I read about a 12 year old girl from Rockaway NJ, who took her own life. This hit me especially hard as I grew up in that area, and more so because I have a 12 year old daughter myself. What I am learning is that there is no town that is immune from this. Statistics are alarming, and in order to prevent more tragedy, we as parents need to gain a better understanding of what exactly we are dealing with. Previous beliefs that suicidal thoughts were something that only older teens dealt with are being dismissed. Suicide attempts in younger children, even as young as 10 and 12 years old are on the rise. Reports from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, indicate suicide rates tripled in females, ages 10 through 14, from 1999 to 2014. Other researchers report that a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder was present in 60% of children aged 5-11, with 30% suffering from depression. When studying the 12-17 year old age group, 66% had a diagnosis of depression, with 29% having ADD or ADHD. These numbers are significant, as it leads one to believe that the suicide may have been an impulse response, not the result of a depressive disorder. In both age groups, about 30% of the children expressed their suicidal thoughts and intentions to others. When tracked month by month over multiple years, suicide peaks are noted in the spring and the fall. July, has the lowest number of suicides on record during multi-year studies. Some researchers have suggested that this annual dip is directly linked to the absence of school and social pressures. Others say it is that our expectations of children have exceeded normal child development, or that electronic presents have been substituted for parental presence. Socialmedia is more powerful than most believe, and perhaps too powerful for young children to manage. Our kids are experiencing too much protection from natural consequences, too much focus on tests and achievements, too much social and peer pressure. Yet they are living in a world where we have too little compassion, too little understanding, too little coping mechanisms, too little mental health support, too little recognition of emotional struggles. It all just becomes too much. If you had the power to prevent the suicide of another one’s child, would you? There is no foolproof method, but perhaps we need to try. It is difficult to respond spontaneously to certain interactions. But just as we would prepare for a job or interview, we need to prepare ourselves for the trials of parenthood. As a parent, do you practice inclusiveness? Do you encourage your child to try and reach out to support or understand kids who appear different, or do you teach her to ignore and steer clear? Have you tried to understand the struggles of a less-understood child, or have you rushed to judgement? Do you avoid the child who has a parent who is struggling with mental health? Have you thought about a response if your child or their friend tell you they no longer want to live? Most children will act out because of a struggle. It may be academic, physical or emotional, but a struggle nonetheless. Do you judge or practice empathy? Do you monitor your child’s online activity? Do you discourage teasing, and humiliation? Do you know when your child has experienced the same? In my research for this article I read a story about a boy who committed suicide. He promised himself that if just one person said hello to him that day, he wouldn’t go through with his plan. That was his test to see if the world cared. His mother found his letter. We owe it to all the young lives cut short, to the parents who will experience never-ending grief, and to our children. Say hello, practice kindness, and by all means teach your child and their friends that their life has purpose, they are loved, and the world cares.

Beach Patrol The Mighty Atlantic by Steve DeJacimo
The surfer mentality is simple. Live in the moment. We all have a tough time with this thinking as we plan, devise, build and schedule our lives. Recently, the news about 24-year-old Zuzana Oravcova, who drowned in the Atlantic just offshore from Point Pleasant Beach hit me very differently. It was literally, too close to home. She was a Jenkinson’s employee, a native of Slovakia. The incident hit me, more than other drownings. I have three daughters, I couldn’t even begin to think of the unimaginable. So, I was immediately saddened. Then, there I was, the very next day after she (Zuzana) went missing, in Chadwick Beach looking at the Coast Guard vessel doing a crisscross search pattern for her, just 50 to 100 yards away. She was out there, not far from us. Helicopters, low to the shore. Searching like mad. We frolicked in the waves. Body surfing easily. There were still powerful waves. My body easily turning like a fidget spinner in a matter of seconds. Lifeguards were standing, right on the water’s edge. Watching. Keeping us all safe. With Zuzana’s story, it was late, after 2am. There were no lifeguards. But, the mentality of live in the moment took over. And, what young person hasn’t had that moment? Maybe not in heavy surf, but in other decisions. Accidents. Horrific. Endings. My brother-in-law and I were discussing such accidents. We have had friends that have been changed forever by the mighty Atlantic. He (my brother-in-law) made a statement that stuck with me enough to write this piece. “Steve, when you get into a car accident, and you go unconscious, you can still breathe. In the ocean, not so much.” Simple. But. So. True. Zuzana’s body was found that same night, just before Midnight, at the water’s edge in Ocean Beach 2.

So, I called on the experts to give us all some insight on this tragedy. “You need to understand the ocean, and respect it”, says Jay Vitale of Aqua Serve, a local lifeguard company here in Point Pleasant Beach. In heavy surf, like the night of Zuzana’s drowning, he offers this advice to all of us. “Surprise leads to panic, and panic leads to ineffective swim patterns. Most inexperienced swimmers fall into a pattern called “climbing the rungs” that of a ladder. This actually pulls your body under.” When on a guarded beach, Jay states, “Be proactive. At the first sense of panic, wave your hands as much as you can. Lifeguards are already scanning for your swimming capabilities and combining them with all the other elements involved. If caught up in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore and not against the current. Don’t fight it. Keep waving to guards.” Sound advice we can all use after this most recent tragedy.
Main Street, USA Using LinkedIn Groups To Grow Your Business by Rosalee Laws
2. Find new employees LinkedIn Groups can hold a goldmine of opportunity for employers. Take note of active members in groups who are actually participating in the conversations. Take even more note of those who can answer questions thoughtfully. Make a list of these individuals, and see who fits your hiring criteria. Once you have narrowed down your targets, reach out to them and try to make a genuine connection. Comment on their posts (when you have value to contribute) and then reach out to them directly.
When you think social media, LinkedIn Groups, might not be the first thing to come to mind. However, with 500 million members to it’s credit, LinkedIn isn’t actually as un-cool as it may sound! What are LinkedIn Groups? LinkedIn Groups are subspaces on LinkedIn which provide a “place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to share content, find answers, post and view jobs, make business contacts, and establish themselves as industry experts.” If you’re looking to find relevant groups for your own personal interest, sign into LinkedIn and simply use the search feature at the top of your homepage or select from the suggestions that LinkedIn offers you of your own “Groups you may like.” LinkedIn groups can help when connecting to areas of your own personal interest, but many small business owners do not know these groups can be a happening place for businesses. When done right, people do have real and thoughtful conversations – plus, your business can build awareness, credibility, generate leads, connect with your audience, network within your own industry, and find as many qualified B2B suppliers and leads as you’ll ever need! So here are 3 ways you can use LinkedIn to grow your business.
3. Build your brand as a thought leader With patience and hard work you can use LinkedIn Groups to establish yourself as an industry expert. Post interesting questions, articles and discussion topics, and be sure to participate in good group conversations once they start. A LinkedIn Group is a perfect way to seek to actually help other people but at the same time a place to grow your online community. What should you be aware of when using LinkedIn? Just like every social media site you have to be careful. LinkedIn may be a social network for professionals, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s acts professional – and that means there are still trolls and the occasional creepy message in the mix.
1. Use LinkedIn Groups as a lead generation channel If you know the groups of people that already buy your products or services you can make a list of potential customers by using LinkedIn Group’s search function and filter by job title, company, and geographic location. With this list of prospects, you can send personalized messages (even if you’re not connected,) see what they’re posting about (to identify their pain points), and build a connection. You can also find tools to send multiple messages at one, however, prospects will be more receptive to your message if they know a bit about you or have a connection in common. Make sure your presence in the Group is known, your profile is optimized for lead generation and you actually engage within the groups. Have your website clearly visible, and write that you’re open to messages regarding business opportunities.
So try it out and tell us on Facebook what you think... What do YOU like or dislike about LinkedIn groups? Got thoughts about LinkedIn groups? Are you already an active participant? Or does it all seem like kind of a waste of time? Tell us what you think at Facebook.com/08742living

Sometimes People Don’t Recognize Me I strongly recommend Dr. Tony’s program to anyone who has tried to lose weight and does not like using prepared packaged foods, or going to weekly meetings with others. Dr. Tony was available to help me personally with any question or issue I had.
On April 23, 2015, I started Dr. Tony’s weight loss program. To my surprise, one week later I had dropped 12 pounds. After another week I was down another 10 pounds! Each week my weight continued to decrease, often by 5 to 7 pounds per week. By the beginning of August I had lost a total of 65 pounds. This is an easy program because it has a structured plan. The diet’s detailed guidelines were not tough to digest, and the plan did not keep me from dining out occasionally. I felt satisfied by the food choices and options.
Sometimes people do not recognize me, as my entire body has been reshaped. My health has improved and I lost the weight without surgery, other interventions, or drugs. The diet program was simple, straight forward and efficient. - Bill L., Wall

Ladies with Tattoos by Katherine Kehoe
How many of you have tattoos? How many of you have always wanted one but always find reasons not to take the leap? Maybe you can’t imagine committing to something so permanent, or maybe you think you can’t handle the pain. You might even be worried about future careers and policies regarding visible tattoos in the work place. There is some reality to those concerns, and they certainly are worth thinking about.

However, one cause for hesitation that I hear often is the worry about what other people are going to think. Some women worry that they might not be as attractive if they get tattoos. Others worry about their parents or older generations making judgments. The problem is, if you worry about stereotypes and what other people are going to think, you might wind up with something you aren’t really happy with. I’ve seen ladies try to decide on a tattoo to get and turn away ideas they liked because they weren’t “feminine” enough and instead went with something small and dainty. Then, later, they looked longingly at women with big, bold designs that weren’t typically “girly” art. I have a good friend who is a tattoo artist, and he plainly stated, “Good tattooing isn’t gendered.” Sure, there might be some stigmas against women with tattoos still lingering in some conservative minds. But we are empowered women of the twenty-first century, and we can challenge those stigmas. For one, it’s your body, and nobody else’s. What you put on it does not affect anyone but you, and you are a canvas for whatever kind of art you enjoy. No, I’m not encouraging you to rush out and grab the first tattoo design you see because you think it’s cool. You should respect the entire process, because this is something that will stick with you forever. You should decide on a design that is going to last, choose an artist that you trust in a respectable shop, and make sure you love the art whole heartedly before you put it on your body.

You also don’t need to spend years angsting over possibilities of who might think what, or what design would be just right and socially acceptable. This may sound oversimplified, but it really is just this straightforward: choose a tattoo that you actually want. It isn’t going to make you less “feminine” to get a panther instead of a flower, if that’s what you’re into. You’re still going to be a beautiful woman, no matter what tattoos you have. If anything, you’ll be even more so because if you choose one you genuinely love, it won’t matter what other people think. You’ll be able to wear your tattoo with pride and feel more comfortable in your skin with its fabulous ink that is unique to only you.
The Book Report “The Taxidermist’s Daughter” by Kate Mosse A book review by Brian Favretto
“The Taxidermist’s Daughter”, by Kate Mosse is a dark and dreary murder mystery set in England in 1912. Constantia (Connie) Gifford lives on the outskirts of town, and on the fringes of society, caring for her reclusive and alcoholic father, while trying to maintain his taxidermy business and his dignity. The story opens at midnight in a churchyard, with the town gathered together on the eve of St. Mark, when ghosts of those who will die in the upcoming year are believed to show themselves. Rather than ghosts, the residents are bewildered by a prank involving thousands of black birds, and an even more bewildering and mysterious murder. Suspicion begins to fall on Connie’s drunkard father, but with his unintentional help, memories from Connie’s lost childhood begin to surface, directing suspicion elsewhere. Connie was witness to an unspeakable crime as a child, but a head injury erased her memory. Now, details begin to surface, and Mosse takes us on a roller coaster that keeps us guessing about that old crime, the new murder, and whether either of these are now related to the disappearance of several prominent figures in the community. Connie is forced to balance the love she has for her father with her own suspicions about his involvement, as she tries to wipe away a web of deceit.
You can expect a glimmer or two of hope and romance spread throughout the pages, but for the most part, “The Taxidermist’s Daughter” is full of dark images, and rich in landscape description. Mosse’s frequent use of black birds like magpies, rooks and crows, gives us a sense of gloom and death foreshadowed. We are bombarded with images of rain, mud, marshes and floods, as well as desolation and loneliness. I wonder if her style had been influenced by Edgar Allan Poe. Some of this darkness, however, has an educational aspect. Without being too gory, we are introduced to the art of taxidermy, where something dead can have new life through the act of preservation.
Characters are introduced at different points of the story, some are respectable and some are heinous, but we often don’t know into which category they fall until the conclusion of the story. All of the characters play a role in the plot, but more than once I found myself back-tracking, because I got confused about who was who. It was easily corrected and not so confusing as to make me want to abandon the book.

Mosse provides the clues and the hints, spaced far enough apart to keep us playing detective for most of the book. She is masterful at keeping us interested, and keeping us guessing. There is a proverb that says “Old sins cast long shadows”, and in this novel, the motive of revenge will be the light that eliminates those shadows. The conclusion is wonderful, and the ending is the most light-hearted part of the book, a proper way to end on a positive note. So as the colder months approach, if you’re interested in a good mystery to accompany you in front of the fire, I can recommend “The Taxidermist’s Daughter”, and see for yourself if justice will be served. “The Taxidermist’s Daughter”, 2016, Harper Collins.
Featured Event of the Month
Festival of The Sea September 16, 2017 By Katherine Kehoe
September 16, 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the Point Pleasant Beach Festival of the Sea. When it first began, the whole event occupied a very small section of Arnold Ave in downtown Point Beach, and it was so empty that vendors could talk to one another across the street. Now, it has grown into a much larger event, with new vendors selling new things every year. The festival still takes place on Arnold Ave from 10am to 7pm, with a rain date of September 17th. Carol Vaccaro, Executive Director of the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce said the Chamber has worked tirelessly since January to organize the event. Now, over 200 vendors and crafters will be present all day long, and an estimated 40,000 people will attend. To celebrate 40 years, this year the festival will be bringing back the 70’s, with lots of tie dye and decade music. Vendors include local restaurants showcasing specialties from barbecue to lobster, such as the Lobster Shanty, Kumo, Point Lobster, and Europa South. There will also be arts and crafters offering jewelry, clothing, gift ideas, photography, and much more, as well as local retail shops such as Stella e Luna and Deena’s. In addition, local businesses such as gyms and real estate offices, as well as nonprofit organizations, will have tables set up. As if food and local businesses aren’t enough, there will also be a dunk tank, live music throughout the day and a wine garden open from 12-7pm. The festival offers fun for all ages, as there will also be pony rides, games, tattoos, and face painting. Vaccaro has been involved in the Festival of the Sea for ten years, and she says it’s amazing to see people come together to meet up
year after year. Local families arrive in the morning to check out the tables, hang out and grab lunch together, and continue browsing in the afternoon. Of course, while there are plenty of locals who attend, it doesn’t matter where you come from. Everyone is welcome to c elebrate; there are also many people who arrive from out of town. Vaccaro notes that there are even vendors who travel all the way from Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina to be part of the event. In addition to the festival itself, all are welcome to participate in the Festival of the Sea 5K that morning, which is happening for the third year. It runs from the band shell in the municipal lot down to the ocean and along the boardwalk. For more information or to register, visit www.festivalofthesea5k.com/. Now that the Festival of the Sea has grown so large, there is a shuttle available to assist with providing transportation from parking lots. It will run from 12pm to 8pm, and picks up from the Point Pleasant Borough High School and the municipal lot at Arnold and Ocean Ave. It also stops at major corners on Arnold Ave and Broadway, as well as Route 35 and Washington intersection. Additionally, the train is a viable option for transportation as the station is located right on Arnold, just across the street from the beginning of the festival. Vaccaro has once again set up an incredible event, but a day this big is always in need of volunteers. The festival needs people who are familiar with the layout of the area to help direct vendors to their allotted spots, as well as to assist with parking lots and traffic control in the morning and afternoon. Anyone who is interested in volunteering should contact the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce at 732-899-2424.

The Power of Positive Thinking Cannabis ‘Healing’ by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT
Cannabis is a genus of flowering plant in the family Cannabaceae and is an annual, dioecious, flowering herb. The Cannabis plant has a history of medicinal use dating back thousands of years across many cultures. It appears to be an up and coming topic of contention but why? People hear the word cannabis and do not correlate it directly with healing but rather an illegal drug that can get you high. This plant’s medicinal value is outmatched to any modern medicine and there is scientific data to prove it. Hemp, cannabis and marijuana are common names for two plants but have a confusing history. The only difference between them is their use. “The term ‘hemp’ commonly refers to the industrial/ commercial use of the cannabis stalk and seed for textiles, foods, papers, body care products, detergents, plastics and building materials. The term ‘marijuana’ or ‘cannabis’ refers to the medicinal, recreational or spiritual use involving the smoking of cannabis flowers. Industrial hemp contains only about 0.3% – 1.5% THC (Tetrahydrocannabinoids, the intoxicating ingredients that make you high) while marijuana contains about 5% – 10% or more THC.” CBD the acronym for cannabidiol seems to be the key in the revolutionary war on pain relief, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-epileptic, bone stimulating properties and other ailments and benefits. Documented investigations have reflected as such. It is a non-psychoactive and will not produce a high. The natural science behind CBD is in Endocannabinoid Modulators. “The endocannabinoid system is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors located in the mammalian brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, consisting of neuromodulatory lipids and their receptors.” This receptor system plays a significant role in regulating neurotransmitter function. This is the central component to health and healing in every human and some animals. CBD is currently being used in various forms to help assist in the human healing process. Some processes are in herbal formulations for in gestation for optimal health and longevity. This is the route most likely questioned but yet explored. Poor health and a lack of a cure through pharmaceutical drugs have led some to experiment this product. In addition, no known side effects have been reported but medication interactions are still possible. Other products are produced through luxury beauty lines without harsh chemicals. The skin is the biggest gland of the human body and all products applied to the skin are ingested through the skin. Another amazing product that is used on the skin is in the form of an emollient or salve, some mixed with camphor or arnica or both to ease pain and inflammation. As this industry grows more and more products are being created with the amazing medicinal properties of CBD. We need to get away from the stigma of the word CBD and focus on the healing aspects. Educating others on its medicinal properties is at the root of turning this scientific breakthrough on its head to become more accepted. “Cannabidiol can both inactivate and enhance various cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver—and this can potentially impact a wide range of medications. Drug interactions are especially important to consider when using life-saving or sense-saving drugs, drugs with narrow therapeutic windows, or medications with major adverse side effects. In particular, those who utilize high doses of CBD concentrates and isolates should keep this in mind when mixing remedies.” One should seek the advice of a medical professional when taking CBD with any medication to avoid adverse reactions. Fashion Frenzy The Pants Made Her Dance By Denise Brady Acanfora Owner, The Urban Exchange
From the outside looking in it appears that I am just selling used clothes and accessories. But to me it is so much more. Every day that I go to my shop and unlock the front door and set up for the day ahead is an experience. I never know who might stop in. I never know if it will be busy or slow. I never know if I will get a lot of items dropped off from consignors or none at all. This has taught me to roll with it. Ride the wave of hectic summer days and non-stop shoppers and regroup and re-merchandise and re-decorate when there is a lull. There is beauty in it all. There is beauty in a store full of shoppers finding a fun piece at a great price. There is beauty in a quieter afternoon with time to change all of the displays and create a new look and feeling in the shop. I try to get as much done as possible early in the day. I am a morning person. I always have been. I am up early and most productive in the morning and early afternoon. I rarely work until the close of the day. By the end of the day I am tired from chatting with so many different people and being on my feet all day. But recently, I had one of the nicest experiences at the end of the day. It was a rare day that I was closing the shop. I was wrapping things up for the day. Getting things ready to shut down for the day. An older couple walked in. They were in their late 70’s and took their time looking around. They spoke quietly and lovingly to each other. It was beautiful to witness. I followed their lead and slowed down a bit. We began chatting and I realized that the woman was not well. She was shopping in the skirt section and selected a few items to try on. I got her all set up in a fitting room. While they continued to look around they commented on the music I had playing. It’s usually the 70’s station. They sang along and told stories about certain songs and memories they shared. Then they spotted the bubblegum on the counter. They both took a piece and giggled. It’s DoubleBubble gum and always brings a smile when people spot it. I helped the woman in and out of the skirts she selected because she was frail from her health issues. Nothing seemed to work. I remembered an interesting piece we had. It was a pair of pants but actually looked like a skirt. It had a vintage vibe and she was clearly delighted when they fit. All three of us smiled. She asked if she could wear her new pants out of the shop. But, her shoes did not match. So I found her a pair that did. As she stepped out of the fitting room she said “these pants make me want to dance”. And she did! Together they moved to the music as they obviously had been doing for years. Gliding, chewing bubblegum and giggling. After paying, the gentleman took my hand and thanked me for my kindness and patience with his wife. He explained that she was not well but that he wanted to take her to the shore for the day and show her a good time and create a memory. I am certainly glad that I was closing the shop that day. Now I am the one with the lovely memory of that late afternoon in the shop. Never underestimate the power of the right pair of pants… they just might make you want to dance!!

Remember the last time you got a new cell phone? You opened up the box and found a fantastic little device. When you touched the power button, the screen flashed to life and suddenly you were confronted with dozens of tiny icons on the screen. Immediately, your reaction was to look in the box for some paper that would contain some kind of explanation regarding how to navigate the multitude of buttons leading to all sorts of apps. But aside from that phone, the only other thing in the box is the power chord that will keep it up and running… and the rest was up to you. Unfortunately, when it comes to modern technology, our phones and laptops don’t come with manuals that walk us through the learning process. We’re left to blindly figure out how to use these devices on our own. Really, there are only a handful of ways we can do this. The first option is to stumble through via the trial and error method, and risk hitting the wrong button and finding ourselves more lost than when we started. The second is to go to the store and ask for help from a stranger, and the last option is to ask a friend or family member to show us how to do something. Unfortunately, sometimes the latter options make the situation even worse. When we defer to people who already know how to use the device, they tend to fly right through the steps and it seems so easy for them – while simultaneously making it even more frustrating for the rest of us as they leave us in the dust choking on technological jargon. As a result, a lot of people feel as though they need to be extremely tech-savvy to learn how to use these devices, and so they stick to what they already know and understand. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a “techie” to take full advantage of smartphones and tablets ; you now have a third option that was born from a recognition of how challenging getting good help can be. AppleSlice is a resource that was created to bridge the gap between the everyday user and these devices, as well as all of the apps that tag along with the system. AppleSlice offers an opportunity for basic, simple sessions (known as “slices”) designed for adults who want to become comfortable with using their Apple device.
Visit AppleSlice.com or call 732.800.1077 August 2017
These slices are taught by adult instructors who are experienced, but not “techies”, and they understand how frustrating it can be to try to learn from impatient, formal store employees or busy family members. AppleSlice instructors approach each session with compassion and a desire to make the experience as easy as possible for the user. There is no rush, no hurry, and no jargon. With AppleSlice, users will find real conversation and tailored instruction delivered in small, digestible “bites”, so that everyone can learn apps one slice at a time.

Rover Rescue Finding the Perfect Fit by Lauren Kehoe
Walk into any pet supply store and you are greeted with rows of colorful leashes and collars. Sometimes it’s easier to go strictly by appearance or price, but choosing the right items can make a huge different for your dog and you! The mass variety of productions on the market can make decisions overwhelming. Different dogs benefit from different things. My go to choice for smaller breed dogs are harnesses. Small breed dogs and mixes (around twenty pounds or less) have a high prevalence of trachea problems. Harnesses distribute pressure more evenly in the event a dog is pulling, releasing the neck from carrying the entire load. This decreases the chance of hurting a fragile trachea.
Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.
Harnesses are also great options for dogs that are strong pullers. They can be more comfortable than outdated choker and prong collars. Front clip harnesses give owners more control then back clips. Back clip harnesses can actually encourage pulling, since a dog’s immediate reaction to pressure is to pull in the opposite direction. Another option is martingale collar. Martingales tighten when a dog pulls and loosen when tension is released. It’s a gentler take on choke collars and prong collars. Choke collars keep tightening where martingales release. Though they look scarier, prong collars are actually less invasive than choke chains. Chokers and prong collars tend to rely solely on the walking equipment to stop bad behavior, rather than using training to teach leash manners. Martingales can be a great training tool to help instill loose leash walking thanks to the addition and release of pressure. Loose leash walking is the best method to control pulling and teach proper leash manners. Instead of yanking back on the leash when a dog pulls, you stop and wait to resume walking until the leash slacks up. Over time, this teaches your dog that when he is not pulling, he gets to walk, and when he is, the walk stops. The walk is the reward! If you stop and your dog is still pulling at the leash, try getting his attention with a name call or some treats. It can be helpful to carry treats to redirect attention from exciting stimuli such as squirrels, dogs, people, bikes, etc. The more practice and reward of desired behaviors and the less time spent performing unwanted behaviors helps a dog progress faster and stronger. A traditional collar with tags is important in case your pup ever gets loose, but choosing a front clip harness or martingale can help you make large strides developing polite walking skills. Putting in a little training each day can eliminate the desire to turn to more controversial equipment options like choke chains, prong collars, or even shock collars. Every dog is an individual, so asking pet supply staff or a trainer can help better assess your dog’s case. Happy trails!
Cannon’s Story
This handsome guy sits patiently at the front of his kennel just waiting for someone to take him out for a walk. Once you’re inside his cage, his excitement takes over as he happily bounces up and down waiting to be leashed up. Once outside, a calm demeanor takes over Cannon as we stroll. He doesn’t seem to mind other passing dogs and doesn’t pull that hard. As we stop for a second to sit on a bench, he jumps up onto his person and just wants to be pet. Occasionally he can get a little mouthy, as a lot of puppies with his energy do, but usually stops after his behavior is ignored. Once the walk is concluded, Cannon is easily brought back into his kennel and easily coaxed with some treats to allow his person to leave.
Dottie’s Story
Dottie is approx an 8 month old border collie mix. This little cutie can be found on her hind legs at the front of her kennel, waiting for someone to come get her. She hops eagerly up and down as she’s getting ready to be taken outside. Once surrounded by fresh air, Dottie walks like a perfect lady on her leash. Not pulling at all, she wanders around to take on her surroundings. Every so often, Dottie will look up at her person in hopes that you will bend down and pet her forever. She will either sit down quietly and let you caress her, or will jump up and rest her front legs on your knees when you’re bent down while leaning against you. When in the agility pen, Dottie likes being by her person but will run after and bring back a tennis ball that is thrown for her to chase. After her walk is over, she’s sad to realize that her journey has ended but is effortlessly brought back inside. We are looking for a home experienced with the breeds and a fenced in yard. They need lots of mental and physical stimulation to be a success in the home. Kids 8+. No cats!
Sweetie’s Story
Lying down in her kennel, Sweetie loves when someone comes to take her for a walk outside. She’s easily leashed up and led to the door. Like Dottie, Sweetie is a rockstar on her leash and doesn’t pull at all, sometimes walking slow enough to walk alongside her person. She can get a little vocal while in her kennel, but outside she doesn’t make a peep and can come across as a very shy girl. She loves to stop in her tracks so that she can be pet, and looks at her person with loving eyes as if to say ‘Thank you!’. She doesn’t seem to mind passing other dogs, but occasionally can get a little energetic seeing another doggie pal. She loves treats and is easily brought back to her kennel as her walk concludes. Sweetie is 3 years old and up to date on all shots, spayed and microchipped.
