Maybe a Little Dark Chocolate isn’t THAT Bad By Tony Garrow, D.C.

If we’re gonna be stuffing our faces with chocolate then…maybe there is a healthy way to do it! Here are five ways to rationalize your guilty pleasure: It helps you exercise longer: A recent study found that eating a tiny amount of dark chocolate before a workout helps fight fatigue, which means you can go that much further during your workout. The amount that worked in the study was tiny — just half a square — but if it’s good quality chocolate, a small square will go a long way.

It is stress relieving: A study found that when highly stressed participants ate an ounce and a half of dark chocolate (the equivalent of a Hershey’s bar) a day for two weeks, the level of stress hormones in their bodies dropped significantly. While eating a candy bar a day can contribute to a whole new set of stresses if you’re watching your weight, it’s nice to know that dark chocolate has a measurable effect on stress levels. It’s heart-healthy: A study found that dark chocolate increases blood flow, which helps keep your ticker in top shape. Those who ate a small amount of chocolate a day had increased blood flow due to more-dilated blood vessels as well as better heart function.

It’s good when you’re sick: If you can’t get the rest you need because of a nagging cough, try dark chocolate. The theobromine, an ingredient in dark chocolate, has been proven to suppress a cough, but just be careful — if you’re trying to go to sleep, remember that a dark chocolate Hershey’s bar has 30 milligrams of caffeine, which is the equivalent to a cup of tea.

It lowers blood pressure: Increasing blood flow also helps your heart in another way. What’s all the Hype About Apple Cider Vinegar? by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT

Allergy Relief: The lymphatic system, which is responsible for causing congestion, can be soothed by the use of apple cider vinegar to reduce the symptoms of allergies.

One of the earliest noted usages of apple cider vinegar is by the philosopher, Hippocrates, known as the “Father of Medicine” as a remedy for a multitude of illnesses and ailments. Our society is shifting into a more holistic lifestyle and we seek to understand and learn more about cutting edge life hacks to benefit our health. Though apple cider vinegar appears to be nothing more than that lonely bottle in our cabinet that has no use actually has way more medicinal properties than you think. Apple cider vinegar has a variety of benefits to the body in various ways. Braggs Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar Organic with the Mother yields the best results and is a staple in my home as well as the wellness center.

Joint Mobility and Cramp Relief: Soaking for 30 minutes in a tub of warm water and apple cider vinegar can relief muscle and joint discomforts. It is also encouraged to drink plenty of water before and after the bath to ensure that your muscles remain hydrated. Apple cider vinegar can dissolve acid crystals in the body and provide nutrients such as calcium and potassium. Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to your bathwater to yield such results.

Apple Cider vinegar is derived from the French term meaning “sour wine,” which stems from its initial discovery of grapes that had fermented past the wine stage and thus created vinegar. “The Mother” is a term for the enzymes that cultivate in pure, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar . “The Mother” refers to a natural strand of enzymes and friendly bacteria that give the apple cider vinegar a “murky, cobweb-like appearance.” According to research gathered and tested the major nutrients found in apple cider vinegar are: Potassium: essential for normal heart, kidney and other organ function Iron: important for blood health Magnesium: vital to heart health Enzymes: boost chemical reactions in the body 6 Malic Acid: protects vinegar from viruses, bacteria and fungus Acetic Acid: slows the digestion of starch Calcium: builds strong bones and teeth Pectin: helps regulate blood pressure and cholesterol Ash: maintains a healthy alkaline state in body.

Stop Nose Bleeds: Insert cotton swabs soaked in apple cider vinegar into each nostril until bleeding ceases. Apple cider vinegar contains properties that constrict the blood vessels which causes it to act as an astringent in order to stop bleeding. Relieve Gas and Bloating: One tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed in water or herbal tea rids the body of gas and bloating. It is required to dilute with another liquid due to its high acidic content, which can cause esophageal damage (also to give a more pleasant, less pungent, vinegar-y taste). Facial Toner and Astringent: Dip a washcloth into a 1:1 mixture of warm water and apple cider vinegar and gently apply to face to cleanse skin and even reduce the appearance of fine facial lines over time.

Prevention of Diabetes: May lead to improvements in insulin levels. Fights Candida: Consume 1 tablespoon of pure apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach for optimal results.

Santa’s Top Picks By Maureen Whelan

The countdown to Christmas is on and it’s time to check your lists, Not the “Naughty and Nice” list, leave that one to Santa. Check the wish list the children in your life gave you. It’s time to consider a few things that your child may not have. Often children will request toys because it is on a peers wish lists, because older siblings have or want them, or perhaps they are simply not aware of what else is available. Choose thoughtfully, it’s important to consider your child’s age as well as their developmental level. Below are some tips and my top picks. You’ll notice there is no iphone, computer or tablet here, but you will find plenty of fun. As a bonus, you can shop local and find unique toys at shops such as BigFun, Quinnderella and Learning Express. Merry Christmas!

Ages 0-3: Board books, shape sorters, stacking blocks and cause/effect toys are good for this age group. Use caution with toys that produce lights and sounds. Many noise producing toys exceed healthy levels and can damage young ears. Remember that little ones ears are often 8-10 inches from the toy when it is playing. Little People (Boxes indicate Ages 12 months to 5 years) This classic toy is only slightly enhanced with sounds and lights, but can be played even if you forgo the batteries like I did. (**See note above). There is a set for every interest such as zoos, race tracks, houses and even an ark. The sets are interchangeable allowing your child to grow in their play schemes. ($7.99- 39.99)

Ages 3-6: Building kits, pretend play and dress up are great for this age. Also, look for toys that encourage exploration, such as magnifiers, garden sets, or even a annual membership to the zoo. (We did this one year and the annual membership at the Philadelphia Zoo was less expensive than a 1 day visit!)

Magformers or Magna Tiles (Box indicates ages 3 and up) These colorful plastic tiles have magnets embedded in the plastic. They make beautiful creations without requiring strength or intrinsic hand control. One of my favorite toys in the preschool classroom, the adults have fun too. These are high quality, and be cautious with less expensive knock-offs as the magnets may come loose or fall out posing a choke and serious health risk if swallowed. Girls and boys will have fun for years to come with this gift, it’s well worth the investment! ($24.99-$159.00)

Ages 7-12 Games become more popular with this crowd as children learn to share attention with more than one peer and interests in competitive play are developing. If your child has difficulty with competition start with games that feature a solo version too. PicWits (Box indicates ages 10 and up) From Mindware, this game could be played with many 8 year olds, and the adults can join in the fun. Match photos with well known sayings to determine which card matches best. It’s much like Apples to Apples (..another favorite of mine!), played with a “judge”. This would be a great pick for kids working on double meanings, social and non-verbal language skills. ($24.95 ) Swurfer (Box indicates ages 6+) This tree swing requires 2 points of suspension and mimics the motions of surfing. The surfboard shaped platform can be used in standing and is flanked by ropes with handles to assist with balance and control as the swing is propelled into motion. I love movement and balance activities and this gift will keep your kids entertained for hours. The 250 pound weight limit will also allow your growing kids to use it for years to come. You’ll need a sturdy tree branch for this one though. ($129.99)

I look forward to the holidays filled with parties and family gatherings, but with time being scarce I need easy appetizers. The Bruschetta is best cooked just before serving, but the Spinach Bites can be cooked prior and reheated. Pomegranate seeds can be bought in the produce section but I prefer fresh. It’s worth watching a video on how to cut this fruit, and was a huge time saver for me. Enjoy!

Spinach Artichoke Bites 2- 6.5 oz jars marinated artichoke hearts 1 -15 oz can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 4 oz

grated parmesan cheese

cups chopped frozen spinach, defrosted and pressed to remove excess water

seasoned bread crumbs

walnuts

2 TBSP prepared pesto 1 tsp

In food processor, pulse artichoke hearts and cannellini beans and place in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix well until all ingredients are well blended. Using a small scoop shape into ball and place in greased mini muffin tins. Bake at 375 degrees for 18 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with a garlic aioli dipping sauce if desired.

Christmas Bruschetta 24 baguette slices, toasted lightly Woerbers, champagne dill mustard 6 oz shredded baby swiss 1 can whole berry cranberry sauce Pomegranate seeds Spread lightly toasted bread pieces with mustard and top with grated swiss cheese. Place under the broiler for 2 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Top each toast with a teaspoon of whole berry cranberry sauce and pomegranate seeds. Garnish with dried or fresh dill.

Cacao Ceremony by Natalie Berko

Cacao “raw chocolate” is a powerful plant medicine that has been used ceremonially for thousands of years across Central and South America. It’s believed that cacao was first used a health elixir and ceremonial medicine as far back as 1900 BC by the Olmec people, before becoming a ritualistic medicine used by the Aztec and Mayan cultures. Symbolizing life and fertility it was ingested by royalty in ceremonial God worship and in sacrificial ritual. Modern cacao ceremonies are a relatively new phenomenon that is growing in popularity. Cacao has become a staple in every health food junkie’s pantry. Higher in antioxidants than any other widely consumed food, cacao supports immune function and helps to neutralize free radicals that can damage cells. High in magnesium, potassium, iron and calcium, cacao more than lives up to its superfood status. Due to certain active ingredients in cacao that help release ‘feel good’ emotions, it is considered a heart opener. Creating feelings of emotional intimacy and pleasure, it has long been herald as a luxury and delicacy, especially with the addition of sugar and spices to suit modern palates. Without even realizing, we still get to enjoy a small taste of its potential when we eat cacao in a regular chocolate bar. Modern day cacao ceremonies are opportunities to connect to yourself and open your heart. Because of this plants ability to increase your connection to your inner self and heart chakra, it aids in any transformational shift you are working towards. The ceremonies vary in their approach, and are customizable to different situations. A ceremony is usually begun by everyone sitting in a sacred circle, honoring the cacao spirit with shamanic prayer, and asking for ones intentions to be heard. The cacao is served in liquid form and drank together. Sound healing or a guided meditation is usually performed while everyone drinks their fill of cacao. One of the main active ingredients that is experienced during the ceremony is Theobromine. Theo-broma literally translates as God-Food, and releases dopamine, the ‘pleasure’ hormone. This alongside phenethylamine, known to relieve stress and depression create a heightened sensation of empathy. After everyone has drank there is an opportunity to speak about what you are trying to release and what is being called in, creating an intention for the journey of the individual even after leaving the ceremony. Due to the euphoria inducing ingredients, the emotional impact can be very profound. Everything feels heightened within the physical and emotional body, including your sense of awareness. Ultimately cacao can help deepen your connection to your heart, and expand your capacity to love and let love in. Next time you have a cup of hot chocolate think about the potent power of love that is floating in your mug! Ceremonial grade cacao is not like the sweet chocolate most of us are used to. Pure raw cacao is quite bitter and traditionally a pinch of cayenne and cinnamon are added as well as a dollop of honey to make it slightly more palatable. Drinking extra water prior and after drinking the cacao is also recommended. You can find it in powdered form at your local health food store or pharmacy. Below is a recipe for a raw chocolate milk shake that you can treat yourself to for a healthy detox, both emotionally and physically. Ingredients: Cup of Almond Milk ¼ cup raw cacao powder 2 tbsp. honey Pinch of Himalayan sea salt ½ tsp cinnamon Cup of ice Add all the ingredients together in a blender, and just blend together!

Crafty Christmas Gifts by Katherine Kehoe

Who’s looking forward to the January credit card bill after all that holiday shopping?! What about having to elbow your way through the crowds in the stores, only to have to get on line behind that guy who has a coupon for three cents off literally everything he’s buying, and in front of the lady who is having some seriously personal conversation really loudly on her cell phone?

Then again, if you’d rather make food for humans, you could fill a mason jar (see, back at the jar again!) with all the dry ingredients needed for some yummy cookies – or you could just make some cookies yourself, tie them up with pretty bows, and deliver them! You could even make it more fun by getting the kids on board (what kid doesn’t love spreading frosting on gingerbread men?) or inviting over some of your girl friends and mixing up some cocktails while you get crafty.

I think it’s safe to say that while there are some really lovely aspects of the holidays, these don’t exactly make the cut. But what can we do? What about changing it up this year? What if, instead of making a list and going through lots of time, money, and aggravation to get all the itemized things, you decided to get a little creative? There are tons of ideas for homemade gifts online. Sure, sometimes they might border on cheesy, but there are plenty that are absolutely adorable and endearing.

Besides saving money and stress and providing an opportunity for some family or friend bonding, homemade gifts sort of go the extra mile. Rather than just picking out something at a store, making something yourself shows that you cared enough to not only think about what the person might like, but that you took the time and care to create it yourself. For my birthday last year, my sister made me a magnet that had a bunch of pictures of us and one of our favorite quotes, and that little rectangle is going to sit on my refrigerator until I die. There’s just something a little extra special about the handmade, creative, outside-the-box gifts that mean a little more – and isn’t that what this season is all about?

If you have a mason jar handy, you’re already halfway there. Think of people you love and what they like, and start tossing stuff into that jar! You could make some ready-made hot cocoa packs with cocoa powder, sugar, and a little cinnamon (and of course a side of baby marshmallows). You could paint the outside and make it into a bank, a pencil holder, or any kind of holder, really! Or, if you want to get out of the jar, you can make ornaments out of just about anything – candy canes, cardboard, pinecones. Add a little glitter and you’re good to go! If you’re into pampering, you can make sugar scrubs, bath bombs and soap with just a few simple ingredients. Maybe someone you know has a dog, and you can bake them some cute little healthy treats.

The Real Flavor of Fall by Matt Connelly

Each Fall, during a month-long period beginning in early September, brewers from around the world travel to the Pacific Northwest to select their hops for the next years’ brews. In 2015, 97% of all hops cultivated in North America came from this region, with nearly three-quarters of our domestic yield being grown in the Yakima Valley of Washington. One could only imagine the amazing aroma rising from the lush hop bines during this harvest period.

Unlike Sierra Nevada, though, most of the nation’s 3000 breweries don’t have the Pacific Northwest in their backyard. For breweries like Brooklyn’s Sixpoint, sourcing hops for Sensi, a wet-hop ale brewed with fresh Amarillo and Cascade, can be a logistical nightmare. “Right after harvest, we rush-deliver sacks of seedless hop cones – hand-selected to be the most lush, the most floral, the most fragrant flowers – and put these ‘wet hops’ directly into this brew.”

Most commonly, hop cones are removed from the bines, cleaned, and transported directly to a kiln where they are dried, cooled and compressed into 200 pound bales. According to Joshua M. Bernstein, in his book Brewed Awakening, the urgency to dry hops is to prevent spoilage. “That’s because hops are like fresh-cut grass,” Bernstein says. “Initially, the smell is superb, but it quickly goes rotten.”

Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, CA, takes their seasonal wet-hopped offering to the next level by bottling and shipping on the same day. “Our farmer friends in Yakima, WA harvested and rushed straight-toour-breweries the freshest virgin, un-kilned hops. Then a herculean effort involving Lagunitas folks from across all different departments commenced with a quickness…sorting and picking through the hops to remove twigs, twine and other stuff from farming.” The resulting beer, appropriately named Born Yesterday, is an earthy and floral burst of Mosaic, Amarillo, and Equinox.

In 1993 Steve Dresler, the head brewer at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, CA, had the idea to produce a commercial beer using “wet hops” – hops picked, delivered and immediately placed into a brew kettle while fresh. The resulting beer – the Northern Hemisphere Harvest Ale – produced intense herbal flavors aromas and became the trail-blazer in a now burgeoning wet-hop ale seasonal market.

“Patsy the Seagull” by Patricia Richel “Patsy the Seagull’s Return to Happiness Lake” by Patricia Richel A book review by Brian Favretto

You may want to know why I am reviewing a pair of children’s books, and better yet, why you’d want to learn about them. Here’s why. “Patsy the Seagull” began as a true story about an injured seagull that author Patricia Richel would feed regularly on Risden’s Beach in Point Pleasant Beach. With the help of students at Ocean Road Elementary School in Point Pleasant, the story took on a life of its own, generating a buzz (and a sequel) that our local community can surely embrace. “Patsy the Seagull” is a lovely children’s book written by local resident Patricia Richel, and illustrated by her granddaughter (and local resident) Faith Turnbach. Patsy is a seagull with an injured leg that was damaged in a fishing line, and he eventually loses the leg. His handicap doesn’t stop him from doing the things he loves, especially relaxing on the beach with his friend Harriet and eating potato chips out of his human friends’ hands. One chilly day in October, the winds from a hurricane named Sandy scooped them up and carried them west. When the winds finally calmed, they found themselves in a strange place. The animals were different, the water was different, even the food was different. Patsy and Harriet were scared and they wanted to go home. They were befriended by Mr. and Mrs. Duck, who taught them to keep an open mind, and to look for the good things in a rough situation. Patsy and Harriet came to like Happiness Lake, Pennsylvania and the new friends they made, but they soon realized it was time to go home. There is no place like their home on the Jersey shore. This is truly a cute story for children and adults alike. Mrs. Richel hits all the essential elements in keeping a child focused on the story for its duration, yet she also imparts some heartfelt lessons. Her descriptions engage the reader’s (or listener’s) senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. She encourages us to understand that a handicap doesn’t necessarily have to place a limit on our capabilities. She also shows us that although change can be scary, if we keep an open mind we can make the best of it. Lastly, Mrs. Richel reminds us that there is no place like home, especially when our home is New Jersey’s wonderful coast. It is worth mentioning that Faith’s illustrations are inspiring, and each page is a showcase of her talent.

In the sequel to “Patsy the Seagull”, Patsy and Harriet go back to Happiness Lake to visit Mr. and Mrs. Duck. In the first visit, they learned to appreciate the differences of a faraway place, so they were excited to see their friends once again. When they got there, however, things didn’t go as they had hoped. There were some new ducks at the lake, Lori and Steven, who teased and bullied Patsy because he was different. To make matters worse, their trusted friends Mr. and Mrs. Duck were aware of the teasing, and didn’t do anything to help. Patsy and Harriet just wanted to go home; but not before they told Mr. and Mrs. Duck about how they felt. Mr. Duck finally did the right thing when he learned how sad Patsy and Harriet were. He redeemed himself by telling Lori and Steven what they did wrong, at the same time helping them realize that they are all different in some way. Lori and Steven apologized to Patsy and Harriet, who now headed back to New Jersey feeling much better. This second book in the “Patsy” series highlights the damaging consequences of bullying, an increasingly important message for children. It also reminds us that those who stand by and don’t take a stand when bullying occurs are also at fault. More valuable lessons in this book include the importance of saying “I’m sorry”, and just as importantly, saying “I forgive you”. As good as Faith’s illustrations were in the first book, I was amazed to see the progress she made in her artwork for this book, just one year later. I’m willing to bet that she has many gifts, and I’ll cheer for her to continue to let them shine. Once again I am fortunate to discuss the talents of local residents in our local magazine. Anyone who has met Patricia Richel (also known as Grandma Pat) can consider himself blessed. She is the “fun” grandma that we can all relate to. You know…the kind of grandma that can turn a one-legged seagull on the beach into a tale that will last for generations! As Mrs. Richel works on her third book in the series, I look forward to Patsy circling the globe, as well as our hearts. I think “Patsy the Seagull” and “Patsy the Seagull’s Return to Happiness Lake” would make wonderful holiday gifts for the children in your life, and they would also provide good company to any coffee table here on the Jersey shore. The Best Kind of Medicine by Lauren Kehoe

This fall I made a last minute decision to return to school and finish out my last two years in Nebraska. Not having time to search for housing, I had to choose campus apartments. This meant having to leave my dog behind until next year. As my first time living in a house with no animals, be it my own or someone else’s, I am lost. The feeling of returning home to a pet free house is rather empty, leading me to wonder how much of an impact dogs and other animals have on our emotions. Many studies show the health benefits of having a dog or cat, but for me it was something difficult to realize until it was gone. Evidence of the positive effects of animals are hard to ignore. People who have pets have lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, are less likely to suffer from depression, and have less anxiety. Pets make for healthier owners emotionally and physically.

Gemma’s Story

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

Physically, dogs keep us active and moving. This keeps our bodies in better shape, while releasing feel good endorphins during exercise. Touching is another physically benefit. Humans are naturally kinesthetic beings, which means petting our furry friends or giving hugs help reduce strength and anxiety. Animal companionship means less feelings of loneliness. Coming home to a pet provides a feeling of being wanted and needed, strengthening our sense of purpose. They keep you on a healthy schedule in order to meet required feeding and walking times. Long walks, dog parks, and training classes are also opportune places to meet new human friends. As wonderful as dogs and other pets may be, certain schedules and commitments may not allow ownership. In my current situation, going back to school full time, working, and being on a powerlifting team exhausts my time and finances. Bringing a dog into the situation to care for would be unfair until I adjust and am sure that I can handle it. This is the case for many others with difficult work schedules, finances, or health issues. If adopting an animal is not in the cards at the moment but you still want the health benefits that come with it, there are other options. Pet sitting allows you to get up close and personal with animals for a limited amount of time. Volunteering at local shelters helps animals with socialization skills, making them more adoptable. If the elderly or sick are living in hospital or nursing room settings, there are wonderful therapy dog programs. Chances are, you also have a busy friend or family member who would love a little extra socialization or exercise for their pet. Taking advantage of opportunities to be with animals is a win win for everyone. The animals will love the attention and exercise, and you will enjoy all of the mental, physical, and emotional benefits that come from loving and caring for them. Spending some time with them weekly can make a positive impact in your routine. Animals are my favorite form of therapy.

Gemma is a 2 year old shar-pei/pug mix that sadly has been bounced around through 3 different homes. So, now here Gemma sits waiting for what she hopes will be a forever family. The vet did say that unfortunately she will need to be on a lifetime of eye meds because she was born without a natural tear production. She cannot produce tears on her own to help keep her eyes lubricated which can lead to other problems. Please do not let that affect your decision on giving this sweet girl a 4th chance! She deserves a loving home that will understand her medical needs. Gemma would do best as the only pet. We are unsure of her house breaking status, and she could use some obedience training. We are looking for a family with dog experience for our sweet Gemma. Kids 10+

Rita’s Story

This cat is part of out shelter outreach program where we go into overcrowded shelters and take some of their pets in hopes of giving them a better chance at being adopted. Rita is a beautiful 5 year old tortie who is initially shy with strangers but she responds to a soft approach. Once she feels secure with you she will show you her true self, a sweet but timid little lady who wants and needs quiet reassurance and affection. With some gentle coaxing, she will be your friend for life. We have found Rita to be uncomfortable around other cats so she would do best as an only pet. If sweet and gentle sounds good to you, come in to meet Rita today. She’s waiting patiently for her own forever family.

Xanthe’s Story

Xanthe came to the Jersey Shore Animal Center on August 12, 2013 with her siblings. She has grown up here with us and really enjoys living in our Free Roaming Room with her feline friends, but she would be even happier with a forever home to call her own. Xanthe is on the shy side, but would do wonderfully in a house with another cat or two. With time, she does come out of her shell and enjoys a few scratches behind her ears. Daisy’s Story

Daisy is a front-declawed brown tabby who was returned to the shelter because her owners could no longer care for her. Martin’s Story

Martin was pulled from an overcrowded shelter in TN by a caring rescue group who put him into foster care and had him treated for heartworms. When his treatment was over and his heartworm test negative, he came to us in hopes of finding a home to call his own. He gets along with other dogs and appears housebroken. He is about 2 years old and a ball of fun. He has to wait til November to be neutered, but we are taking applications on him. Please stop in to visit this little guy today.

Although the generation of shore bar-goers who revered the ‘70s and ‘80s band Holme as a party rock band of mythic legend have since grown, they have certainly created an oral history around the act and Stone Pony house band Cats on a Smooth Surface for younger generations whose families remained in the shore area.

My parents often speak fondly of both acts, but the Krauss family took it to the next level. Alexis was born and raised in Manasquan after her father, Joel, a member of both bands, had slowed down compared to the earlier decades, but the musical gene made its way to her anyway. Alexis, the lead singer of Sleigh Bells – who released their first album, “Treats” in 2010 and played Saturday Night Live in 2012 – graduated from Manasquan High School in 2003, where she was not only voted “Best Vocalist” in her senior yearbook, but “Most Likely to Be Famous” as well. The differences between the classic rock of Holme and the noise pop of Sleigh Bells is stark and represents a growth between generations. Alexis and musical partner Derek Miller create music with a much harder edge than the traditional Jersey Shore sound, as concrete-cracking instrumentation bangs away behind Alexis’ sometimes melodic, sometimes growling vocals. With a few complex songs, Sleigh Bells turned the House of Independents into an epic dance party and with a few simple words to open the show, Alexis turned a generational gap into a fundamental truth: “It’s good to be home.”
