Rover Rescue Dog Training: It’s Within Everyone’s Reach by Lauren Kehoe

Dog training can be a costly luxury that at times is only accessible to middle- and upper-class individuals. Behavior problems are one of the big reasons why dogs end up in shelters across the country. While dog trainers and behaviorists have studied for years and deserve to be paid for their services, there is also a need for accessibility. Many trainers will already donate their time to work with shelter animals and help increase their adoptability. The question arises of how to create accessible training resources for families and dogs that may lack financial means. Many people think dog training deals with training a dog’s behavior to fit our lifestyle. To create a consistent change in behavior, a great deal of emphasis must be set on training an owner to work with the dog. This may mean that in some cases, just a few training sessions may be sufficient if an owner is dedicated in creating a lasting behavior modification. Taking detailed notes and repetition of the exercises and techniques executed in lessons with trainers is vital to long term success. It is not just about a thirtyminute training session, rather utilizing every moment with a dog as an opportunity for training.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

If training sessions are out of the question, there are a variety of self-teaching resources. There are many useful videos on popular sites such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Videos may be as basic as simple obedience exercises such as sit, down, stay, come, spin, etc. There are also videos aimed at more complex behavior quirks such as “Look at that” work for dog reactivity, or in-depth nose work and agility demonstrations. There are comment sections on these videos, as well as dog behavior blogs and online forums, where individuals can exchange questions, answers, and advice. It does not have to be a professional certified trainer, even individuals offering suggestions as to what may or may not have worked for them and their pups can offer a fresh perspective. In addition to online videos and behavior blogs, there are a variety of written resources. Tending to lean toward the realm of positive reinforcement training, plenty of books are available. A few popular ones are “The Power of Positive Dog Training” by Pat Miller, “Rescue Your Dog from Fear” by Peggy Swager, “The Culture Clash” by Jean Donaldson, “Don’t Shoot the Dog” by Karen Pryor, and “The Other End of the Leash” by Patricia McConnell. The good news is we do not need to send our pets to a fancy boot camp or dump hundreds of dollars into private training sessions to improve behavior. In fact, the more we learn and train ourselves to work in harmony with our dogs, the better results we will obtain. There are a variety of resources available at low or no cost to owners. If we utilize them and are willing to put in the work, great progress in dog training can be made.

Students of 08742 Mama Mia! — The PPBHS 2021 Spring Musical by Madelyn Killi

Running from May 5th through May 8th, Point Pleasant Borough High School’s performing arts department presented their production of Mamma Mia!, the Broadway hit turned moviemusical featuring the music of Swedish pop group ABBA.

Miss Felicia Villa) had the audience clapping and singing along. The set of the show (built by PPBHS’s many stagecraft classes) truly established the show’s summer Greek Island setting. There were balconies, lights, flowers, and plenty of bright blue accents to emulate the feeling that an ocean of the same color was nearby. The performance by the cast was dynamic, comedic, and made for an all-around feel-good show for anyone in the audience, which, to the cast, was the name of the game. So much, in fact, that the company obeyed their audience’s pleas to “gimme, gimme, gimme more music” and had three encore songs following their final bows, including fan favorites “Mamma Mia”, “Dancing Queen”, and “Waterloo”. The smiles and laughter from audience members matched those of the performers, showing that PPBHS’s Mamma Mia! was fun and worthwhile for everyone involved.

Taking place on a beautiful Greek island, Mamma Mia! tells the story of Donna Sheridan (played by Aislyn Lapp, senior) as she prepares her hotel for her daughter’s wedding. Unbeknownst to her, her daughter Sophie (Sophia Lepore, junior) has invited her father to the wedding… that is, if she knew who her father was. Upon discovering that she has three possible fathers, Sophie decides to invite all three: Harry (Aidan Hulse, junior), Bill (Thomas Baker, senior), and Sam (Vincent Rullo, junior). Unable to immediately determine which man is the father, Donna eventually discovers her three former flings’ presence on the island and is thrown into a spiral of conflicting emotions. As independent and stubborn as she is, Donna receives the advice and support from her closest friends and fellow Dynamos, Tanya (Amy Scraggs, junior) and Rosie (Lily Strassheim, junior). Through a series of wedding-related hijinks, comedic antics, and high-energy musical numbers, Donna and Sophie learn that what you want isn’t always what you need. They learn that, sometimes, getting what will make you happy will force you outside of your comfort zone. You can’t let the ones you love go slipping through your fingers.

After their planned 2020 production of West Side Story got cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the PPBHS performing arts department is back and better than ever, pouring their hearts and souls into this year’s musical. This production clearly showcases the tremendous amount of talent possessed by the cast, crew, orchestra (conductor: Mr. Scott Visco), production staff, and everyone involved in putting this show together. A big “Thank You!” to director/scene designer Mr. Ian Kearns, production manager Mrs. Rebecca Muraglia, technical director Eric Larsen, artistic designer/box office manager Mrs. Denise LaPlaca, box office manager Mrs. Stacey Camilleri, and Playbill designer Mrs. Samantha Willmot. Another special “Thank You!” to the Point Pleasant Board of Education and PPBHS Administrators, as well as parents, family members, friends, and everyone else who came to support PPBHS performing arts. Mamma Mia! would not have been possible without your love and support.

What made this performance so special? Besides the immense amount of talent displayed by the cast, it’s just so much FUN! Mamma Mia! is campy and frivolous in the best way possible. The brightly-colored costumes (costume designers: Mrs. Debi Bilotta and Mrs. Kathy Stewart) were dazzling and unlike anything seen on this stage before. The over-the-top dance numbers (Dancing Queen- I mean… choreographer: Miss Christine Baglivio) were electric and made the show feel like a party. The instantly recognizable music (musical director:

The Power of Positive Thinking How to Gain Support in a Personal Transformation by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT

I’ve seen clients, friends, and family’s personal transformations take place for so many years but during this time of COVID the transformations have been abound and profound. Though transformations can be an exciting and positive time it can also off-put those around you when the transformation is quick or drastic. This can lead to a challenging time in your life if they don’t get-it or understand it. Those around you may start to question your decisions and thought process making you feel disheartened or discouraged. It may even make you start to feel alone. Below, I have offered some advice to help you get those around you on-board with your transformation in a positive way for everyone. First, remember, your loved ones are concerned because they are coming from a place of love for you. It is very important for the line of communication to stay open throughout the process. You cannot expect them to accept and understand your transformation without consistent open conversation.

Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of the Coastal Cottage 64 Bridge Avenue Bay Head, NJ 08742

1) SHARE! Share with your loved ones what you are trying to create or what you are trying to transform. Your excitement and enthusiasm will get them excited for you. By sharing you are giving them insight into the positive effects your transformation has on you. 2) ASK! Request feedback from your loved ones on how they perceive your transformation is going. Perhaps you solicit for their help in your transformation. Loved ones feel as sense of participation in your happiness ultimately empowering them. 3) RECIROPCATE! Ask your loved one what their dreams are regarding a transformation. Perhaps there are old habits they would like to leave behind, finally. Support them in their life vision. 4) GRATITUDE! Practicing and showing continuous gratitude to your loved one and your transformation is such a positive approach to your new path for everyone. It authenticates the process. You are showing deep gratitude to your friends and love for their support and understanding. 5) LIKE YOU! Surround yourself with like-minded people that also assist you in the positive transformation you are experiencing. Being around like-minded people can e mpower us with validation and also provide us with their experience and guidance. Become a master of your own communication openly and honestly with kindness. These techniques will help you to transform your life and potentially transform those around you in a positive way. By positively transforming, your loved ones will be so happy for you that there should be no issue or conflict. If your loved ones still aren’t on board after incorporating these techniques, you might need to focus on your own joy. Your transformation should be positive for you and those around you. There should be no need for confrontation, start forgiving. In love and positivity, Allison

BackBook to Earth The Report

Gardening as a Mindfulness Practice by Natalie Berko

There’s something special about caring for a plant. Whether you have a sprawling vegetable garden or a succulent on your desk it can be really fun and exciting to watch them grown a new leaf, get a bit taller or sprout flowers. You are already aware of the nutritional benefits of gardening your own food, have you considered the positive effects gardening can have on your consciousness. We often think that to meditate we must be still and in complete quiet. We’ve had other things evolve such as guided meditation and even moving meditation like taking a long walk in nature. The goal of meditation whichever way you chose to practice is to let go of worries in the past and anxieties about the future, to essentially become present. When we are involved in an activity such as gardening we are very much able to let go of our thoughts and just focus in the moment on what we are doing. The following list of tips are designed to help you create your own gardening mindfulness practice.

Natalie Berko Certified Crystal Healer

1. Set Aside Time Even in a small enclosed garden, you can find tranquility in the sounds of nature, smell of the fresh earth and the warmth of the sun. Just being in your garden can bring about a sense of calm. The first big step is to set aside time each day even if it’s just ten minutes to get your hands in the dirt. The idea is to purposefully use this time in your garden for meditation, try simple techniques such as praying, singing or repeating a mantra. While these all have positive effects on you they also have the added benefits for your plants. 2. Get Grounded When you first get into the garden, take a few moments and actively engage with all of your senses. Start by identifying three things you see, then close your eyes and identify three things you hear, and touch and smell. If you are working in an eatable garden and its harvest time make sure to taste some of your hard work too. This simple activity will help ground yourself in the garden space and sets the tone for your practice. 3. Incorporate Color and Aromatherapy An appealing garden should be one full of color and aroma. You can enhance your gardening experience by intentionally manipulating the scenery. When planning your garden, consider including aromatic flowers or herbs for olfactory pleasure. Select plants so that as the sun bakes and the wind breezes, you can find yourself bathing in pleasant aromas. Plotting your garden with color in mind is also a great way to invigorate your mind. 4. Nature’s Music Enhance the peacefulness of your gardening experience with some wind chimes, or take time to sit and use a singing bowl to tune yourself and your plants periodically. 5. Mindful Eating One of the best parts of gardening will be harvest time! While you harvest your fresh fruits, vegetables and even flowers remember to give back gratitude. This simple though toward your garden and yourself will benefit your body and mind cultivating a loving, nourishing awareness from within.
