Rover Rescue It’s Kitten Season! by Lauren Kehoe
Spring is in the air! That can mean only one thing: kitten season. As the months get warmer, momma cats start popping out their babies. Spay and neuter programs have significantly helped reduce pet overpopulation, but cats still have the highest rate of euthanasia in shelters across the country. Low cost spay and neuter options for pets and trap, neuter, release programs for feral cats continue to chip away at the issue. In the meantime, most shelters are buckling down in preparation of an influx of kittens. It is the perfect time to build or grow a foster program to assist in caring for bottle babies. Mothers always know best when it comes to taking care of their young, but unfortunately they are not always able to do so. It is common for kittens to come into shelters quite young without a mother. This means that shelter and rescue workers or a foster family must assume the responsibilities of being “mom”. The role of a mother is no joke, no matter the species.
Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.
Fosters are vital for young bottle baby kittens, as they require around the clock care. Newborn kittens up to a week old must be fed every 2-3 hours using a bottle and formula. At two to three weeks old they can go a bit longer and be fed every 4-6 hours. Solid food can be introduced between three and four weeks. Cleaning kittens using a wet washcloth after feeding mimics a mother’s tongue. It rids a kitten’s fur of food, urine, feces, or debris and helps keep up overall health. They must be weighed daily using a small kitchen or postal scale that reads in grams. Kittens should be slowly and steadily gaining weight. If a kitten plateaus and is maintaining or begins to lose weight, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Gaining about half an ounce each day is ideal, or three to four ounces each week. When not being fed, bottle babies should be kept in a carrier or similar shelter for safety. As kittens must be kept warm, they need special heating pads approved for pet use. The heating pads can be warmed in a microwave and wrapped in towels. Towels and bedding should be cleaned and changed daily. Heating pads are needed until kittens are about three to four weeks old. Socialization and handling are extremely important, as it gets kittens accustomed to human contact at a young age. Gentle petting helps create a bond with humans that carries through with age, making kittens more social and more adoptable. Playing with different toys helps develop fine motor skills and stimulate a kitten’s mind. Constant supervision in a foster setting also helps catch any possible heath issues early. These could begin as goopy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or difficulty urinating, hair loss, or loss off appetite. Young kittens are extremely fragile. Seeking medical attention with the start of symptoms is essential. Caring for bottle baby kittens is a difficult, rewarding job. Generous, loving foster homes allow the opportunity for them to grow and flourish, eventually finding their forever home. There are many resources available if considering fostering bottle babies and deciding if your home is appropriate. While a demanding task, nothing beats saving a life. http://www.kittenlady.org/fostering https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZyDy7gy9vwr0m119g5poGvgHM-4Wxv80

The Power of Positive Thinking How to Cultivate an Attitude of Positivity by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT
Positive Thinking: Changing your perspective to look at things in a realistic, but positive, light. We are all capable of achieving great things if we can maintain the power of positive thinking. For most people, their experience is exercising lower states of emotion such as fear, guilt, anger, disappointment…. Over time we become pessimistic by projecting a worse case scenario. If we project the worst-case scenario as the final outcome than anything above that is a bonus. This tactic doesn’t allow for the body to act in its natural state of happiness, joy, love….
Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of the Coastal Cottage 64 Bridge Avenue Bay Head, NJ 08742
The body might become addicted to emotions that subconsciously creates circumstances to experience outcomes. Our thoughts become reality. What you’ve accomplished is only a fraction of what is truly possible for you. How does one become a positive thinker? You decide consciously to make a change and succeed making optimism integrated into your life and the new normal. Replace the negative thought with a positive thought. This creates new neural networks in the brain. Thoughts become actions and actions result in outcomes. It’s the power of positive DOING. The mind is everything. What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create. Here are a few quick techniques to think more optimistically. First, start your day off on a positive note. Perform affirmations, visualizations, meditation, or gratitude exercises to kick off the day on a high note. Positive words increase cognitive reasoning and strengthen the brain’s frontal lobe. As the day progresses look for lessons in every situation. Use positive language. This will in-turn raise your vibration. Emotions have been measured in megahertz and happiness, joy, love, are all high vibratory emotions. If you can’t seem to raise your vibration on your own, then seek to empower others. Empowering others empowers us and raises our vibration. These exercises can take up to 5 minutes or 30 minutes depending on your timing or commitment. Once you start to feel and see the positive changes you will realize that you are indeed changing as well. Practicing a new-state-of being is just that, practice. You have to start somewhere but these exercises have changed my life and the lives of thousands of my clients. Cultivate a new you and a new reality. Stay strong out there! In health & happiness, Allison

Back to Earth Spring Awakening Mind, Body and Spirit by Natalie Berko
Spring is finally here, a time when the natural environment comes alive again. The seasonal shift into spring is symbolic of rebirth and renewal. It’s a great time to check in, plant new intentions, and nurture their growth. Focus on your well-being this season by taking some active steps to refresh your mind, body and spirit. Here are ten ways to breathe some fresh springtime air into your life.
1. Get Some Fresh Air - After being stuck inside during the cold, icy winter months getting outside is one of the
Natalie Berko Certified Crystal Healer
best ways to feel refreshed. Welcome the sunshine and springtime air by taking a walk outside a few times a week. Not only will this help clear your mind and make you feel more energized, it will also aid in shedding any unwanted pounds we all put on during the cold winter months. Use your senses to enjoy the outdoor environment smell the blooming flowers, hear the returning birds, and feel the warmth of the sun.
2. Detox & Cleanse - The cars we drive, the pollution in the air, and even some of the technology we use can
create toxins that enter our bodies. Spring is the perfect time to eliminate negative chemicals from your body. Try doing the simple things you know are good like eating more fresh fruits and vegetable, drink more water, and maybe try making your own juice.
3. Practice Meditation - Taking time to listen quietly to the needs of your mind, body and soul will help you
become rejuvenated in all three. Meditation is a personal thing, no two peoples practice looks the same so find what works for you. If you can meditate in the outdoors even better!
4. Learn New Ways to Relieve Stress - One of the most dangerous things for your body is stress. This spring try to learn some Yoga. Yoga has been found to reduce stress within minutes and has been used for thousands of years because of its many benefits to the body and mind.
5. Laugh More - Laughter is an all-natural super stress reducer. The winter months can sometimes make us feel
gloomy. Finding ways to laugh can bring you right out of that winter funk! Go see a comedy show, watch some funny movies or listen to an amusing podcast.
6. Refresh Your Morning Routine - A grounding routine can set the tone for your day, so try swapping the
phone-scrolling with something more mindful. Instead of prioritizing the need to check the news, social media or notifications first thing in the morning, take a few grounding moments for personal growth like a quick meditation or breath work exercise.
7. Improve Your Sleep Patterns - Proper sleep is essential to fight off negative signs of aging and can even
help prevent major illnesses down the road. Keep your bedroom environment quiet, dark and at a comfortable temperature. Having a regular bedtime and wake-up time is another good sleep habit. Try writing out a to-do list for the next day so you no longer have to think about those things. Play some relaxing ambient music or use some essential oils to set you in the right mind set and get some much needed rest.
8. Increase Endorphin Levels - Endorphins are chemicals in your brain that make you feel good. They are used
by the body to suppress pain, and give you a euphoric feeling that you can push through anything. A great way to increase your levels of endorphins is to get some exercise. If you are just starting out go easy and take a ten minute walk. You can work your way up to more time exercising and increased intensity.
9. Plant Something New - If you want your garden to flourish you make sure it’s planted in nutrient-rich soil and
placed in a spot with just the right amount of sunlight, warmth, and water. This same principle applies to you too! You will blossom when you’re doing the things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. As the days get long take this opportunity to sign up for that pottery class you’ve been dying to try or attend new yoga session, do what feeds your spirit.
10. Show Gratitude - There are some many things you can do to feel good this spring try giving back, volunteering and showing appreciation to others can improve your physical, mental and spiritual outlook. Try to compliment at least one person each day, show appreciation to a cashier, wave to your neighbors walking their dogs or the postal carrier that brings your mail every day. Act with kindness giving good vibes to those around you and you in turn will feel great too!

Healthy Morsels, II Spring is in the Air! by Lynn O’Hara
When all seems bleak and harrowing in the world, take heart! Spring is in the air and with it some safe outdoor gatherings! Also, I read research showing that the Covid vaccines are proving to be very good at fighting the virus with no symptoms AND no illness AND, most importantly, showing a decrease in transmission rates. What that means is we are almost out of the woods. It means if you are vaccinated you can CAREFULLY gather with a small number of other vaccinated folks with no fear of catching the virus! WOO HOO!!!
Lynn O’Hara, MS, RD, LPC Licensed Psychotherapist Registered Dietitian (732) 899-9312 www.lynnoharalpc.com
Now, what that doesn’t mean is that we can forgo masks and other social distancing practices when out in public. I certainly would not start hanging out with a bunch of non-vaccinated folks without a mask but if you are around people who aren’t vaccinated and aren’t practicing social distancing or mask wearing you are still pretty well protected. What we do need to see happen is more people getting vaccinated. The problem here is that we need a certain percentage of the population to get their shots or the virus will continue to be spread. There are still many people who are wary of the vaccine. I get it but the problem is that we will not reach herd immunity unless most people get vaccinated or they practice very careful social distancing and aren’t at any risk of catching the virus. And here’s why. If the covid virus continues to spread it will continue to mutate and if one of those variants gets past the vaccines we are back at square one. Want more of the past year? I don’t. So, let’s work for the greater good. Please get vaccinated and please, please, do not let your guard down yet. It has been such a rough year and I know we are all just chomping at the bit to get back to some sense of normal and connect with friends and loved ones. We just need to be smart and safe about how we put ourselves out there. We are so close to ending this nightmare if we would all just hang in there and continue safe practices. With continued social distancing and mask wearing and getting the vaccine we can start to open up our world. The CDC just allowed travel for people who are vaccinated. We are getting there. We really are. July 4th party, anyone? Until next time, wash your hands, wear a mask and get vaccinated!!!
