Songkran: The Original New Year Phuket celebrates the original Thai New Year with much of the same elan as the rest of the country.

T

raditionally, there was only one ‘New Year’ in Thailand. Songkran, the start of the Buddhist year, is still celebrated between the 13th - 15th April, at the height of the hot season. Translated literally as “the passing of”, Songkran marks the beginning of the solar calendar, when the sun passes from the sign of Taurus into Aries. In the rural community - and until recently Thailand was almost entirely an agricultural society - this has been a perfect time to take a break from the business of earning a living. The rice harvest is in, and replanting has to await the coming of the rains. For centuries, this has presented an opportunity for young men and women to meet socially, turning the lull in the seasonal cycle of labour to matters of courtship. It is a time of joy, and Thais have long marked the occasion by making merit - by offering food to monks and by releasing caged birds, turtles, and fish. The latter custom had its origins where villagers would collect fish strand- alike spend the days dousing each other ed in the pools left as the ponds and canals (and any unlucky bystanders) with water dried up in the searing heat, saving them - a fine and refreshing experience, given till Songkran for release into the river. When it did, though, it was embraced with such abandon that the police officially had to ban it as a traffic hazard. The prohibition has never really taken hold and today if you ride a Bangkok bus during Songkran you must still be prepared for a drenching. Along the streets you find gleeful knots of people heaving buckets of water at any passing vehicle. If you’re driving, keep your windows closed. If you’re on foot you may get ambushed by a careening tuk-tuk jammed full of young revellers armed with pails of water. It’s all in the spirit of good fellowship and people are pleased to receive as good as they give out. Have fun! Story by CP

Marc Landgraf GM of Cape Panwa Hotel Getting to Know...

M

arc Landgraf is an alumnus of the prestigious Lausanne Hotel Management School in Switzerland and gained rich international experience working in Europe, the Dominican Republic, Koh Samui and latterly in Koh Yao. This January Marc became the General Manager of the lovely Cape Panwa Hotel in Phuket’s southeast corner. We caught up with him poolside at the hotel.

What are your immediate objectives in taking over as Manager of the wellestablished Cape Panwa Hotel? Although the Cape Panwa Hotel has a well-established 25 year track record and a loyal customer base of repeat visitors, this is a very exciting time for us as we are going through a total renovation and conversion to an ‘All Suites’ format. Our parent company the Kasemkij Group is investing 365 million baht to convert the property to offer an exclusive range of different types of suites. We will have Cape Suites at 78 sq. meters, plus Junior Suites at 53 sq. meters with great views over Cape Panwa. There will also be a smaller selection of Family Suites, Cape Signature Suites, Pool Villas and our exclusive Panwa Lodge residence making up our total of 204 rooms. Our aim is to provide our customers with a state-of-the-modern-art resort lifestyle with such technology as complete Wi-Fi Internet access, i-Pod speakers, digital flat screen TV and DVD players complemented by generous amounts of space in which to relax and unwind. Typical features include sea-facing balconies overlooking coconut groves with the sea beyond; outdoor whirlpool and day beds for two; large modern bathrooms and tastefully-decorated living and sleeping spaces.

the year by being flexible in our rates and yield and sensitive to the dynamics of local the market. How do your financial targets match the change of accommodation to an ‘All-Suites’ model?

Our plan is maintain high occupancy right throughout the year by being flexible in our rates and yield and sensitive to the dynamics of local the market. What specific marketing tactics will you deploy to reach your increased financial targets? We plan to expand our customer base by concentrating sales, marketing and PR efforts on the regional markets of Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia where factors such as direct air connections, Low Cost Carrier flights and local currency strengths help make Phuket particularly attractive to these geographies right now. With current high competition among hotels in the Cape Panwa region, we plan to concentrate on corporate meeting and seminar groups as well as offering special promotional packages to the local Thai market. This coming low season, for example, we will feature special room rates starting at 3,500 baht per night including ABF for two persons as an incentive to attract local customers. Our plan is maintain high occupancy right throughout

We expect to expand our customer base and also length of stay by running year-round promotions and packages that feature our new range of suites and also leverage the revival in Phuket tourism market, in order to generate a revenue increase of 20 per cent in 2011 versus last year. The conversion to the ‘All Suites’ format will obviously move us more into the longer-term, residential sector of the market with attendant opportunities for revenue growth from increased room rates, extended length of stay and supplementary revenue streams such as F&B. What are your other key priorities in your new role of General Manger? I plan to continue to expand our existing large ‘return guests’ portfolio and also raise service and therefore customer satisfaction levels. Most importantly this means raising staff competences through training, retention, disciplined systems and reward. Obviously this is where the government and the private sector can to work together to increase the language competencies and familiarisation with the realities of careers in the hotel service industry among trainees and recruits from the colleges and universities. I believe that real success in this industry calls for genuine passion for the work and for meeting the needs and demands of our customers on a 24/7 basis. It is not a career for everyone, but for those who have this genuine passion for the hospitality industry, it is one of the most exciting and satisfying careers there is. www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

Life’s a Beach

W

ith a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available.

Mai Khao Beach

Nai Harn Beach

E

Closer to Paradise

verybody knows of world famous Patong Beach, and most are familiar with Kata and Karon beach, to some these beaches represent a kind of paradise, for me they are far from it, purgatory may be a better comparison; a sea of torn parasols, a path laid down by cigarette butts and plastic bags, the endless harassment from the vendors trying to sell you much of the same tat you either already bought or didn’t want to buy in the first place, its enough to make you want to pack your bags and go home, but wait, before you do that, have you considered venturing a little further afield? Have you thought about moving around the island a little and seeing what secrets Phuket’s coastline has to offer? Many people stick to the beaches in the main tourist hub because it is convenient; that’s where their hotel is, and to go any further would either mean risking their life piloting their own war machine to battle the traffic around the island or paying for a tuk-tuk to take them there. You will need to choose one of the above but I guarantee you will reap the benefits if you head out to Nai Harn beach. Situated at the southern tip of the island this little bay holds a lot of charm, yes the parasols are still there, and yes the vendors are still traipsing around trying to flog their fare but its all much more low key, and better for it. The backdrop to the beach is a shady canopy of casuarina trees which offer gentle respite from the searing mid day sun, a series of understated restaurants sell to those who drift in and offer refreshments for those intent on the pursuit of the perfect tan. If you plan to spend a day here you will not be disappointed. The beach is small enough to give it charm, but large enough to find your own spot, the sea is wonderful for bathing and playing in making it very safe for families with young children. The view is picturesque during the day and if you stay until early evening you will be rewarded with a stunning sunset making it a great beach for romantic couples who want to enjoy each other’s company. The balance of convenience, the available facilities and the shear natural beauty make this one beach which is just that little step closer to paradise. www.theguidephuket.com

North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning and there is nobody here! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are five deep on Patong.

Nai Yang Beach

Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.

Nai Thon Beach

A little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favourite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a fine strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.

Layan Beach

This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim its not the place to go.

Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao Beach has, in recent years, seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong tides. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.

Surin Beach

Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with fine white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurfing. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.

Laem Singh Beach

Laem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.

Kamala Beach

Kamala, a 3-kilometre long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast, has undergone recent developments to the main street but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the

Lifestyle / 17 beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks flanking either side of the beach.

Karon Beach

Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the first main stop south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two.

Kata Beach

Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral allows for excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.

Kata Noi Beach

Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling; many fish inhabit the rocks and corals along the beachless shoreline stretching south.

Ao Sane Beach

Ao Sane beach is a small bay and is located to the right side of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

Patong Beach

The most famous beach on the island is the centre of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the centre of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colourful and lively mix that typifies a Thai tourist beach town.

Yanui Beach

Yanui Beach is a small bay, 10 minutes north from Leam Phrom Thep. It is not a popular water activity beach but nice to relax to get away from crowd. The beach is not so long and the sand is beautifully soft but not very white. It is a favourite bathing and sunbathing location.

Ao Yon Beach

Ao Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watching the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts.

Sadly though, not all of us are here on holiday, but being here on business doesn’t mean to say that your stay should be stressful. Mövenpick’s world class facilities and unbeatable service mind will ensure that your events and meetings run as smoothly as possible. In the Kitchen with...

Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant

T

The courses begin with an introduction in which the students are taken to the fresh downtown market and taught how to select the very best and freshest ingredients and how to differentiate between good and bad quality. www.theguidephuket.com

he Blue Elephant Group comprises a growing list of gorgeous restaurants and cooking schools that have been pioneering and serving Royal Thai cuisine in various global capitals since 1980. The Group was founded by Nooror Somany Steppe and her Belgian husband Karl Steppe, who opened their first restaurant in Brussels in 1980. The second Blue Elephant then followed in London in 1986 and the company now has restaurants in Paris, Copenhagen, Lyon, Dubai, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malta, Beirut, Moscow, Jakarta and of course Bangkok, which opened in 2002, in a beautifully-renovated 100-year-old mansion. Phuket’s own Blue Elephant was added to the list a little over a year ago and is located at 96, Krabi Road, the site of the famous Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion. This grand, historic Sino-Portuguese residence was built in 1903 by Tan Ma Sieng or Phra Phitak Chinpracha, a Chinese Tin Baron and ancestor of the famous Tandavanitj clan’s patriarch. It is a splendid building displaying a combination of European and Chinese styles. The architecture is in fact Sino-Portuguese, while it is decorated in a traditional Chinese style, especially with a big ventilator on the rooftop called a “Shim Jae”, an example Hokkien feng shui science. The front of the mansion opens to the south and thereby captures fresh breezes throughout the year. This elegant mansion was in the past used as the Phuket Governor’s residence and because of its history and its lush verdant grounds it has been used as a location for several movies including “Heaven and Earth”, “the Killing Fields”, and TV’s “Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”. It is also won a conservation award

from the Thai authorities, in the 1990s. “We spent two years repairing, restoring and renovating it,” explained Kim Steppe, son of Nooror Somany Steppe and the Phuket Blue Elephant’s manager, “We replaced the roof and managed to find an exact match of tiles from Italy. In doing so we brought a whole new source of life to the property that was well needed.” Walking around the mansion and the sumptuous gardens, one can’t help but admire its splendor, feel its history and wonder at how such a property could remain largely unused for such a long time. The Blue Elephant offers half, full day and professional-tailored private five day cooking courses where the well-trained and experienced Blue Elephant chefs teach, demonstrate and guide you in the practice of the delicate art of cooking Royal Thai cuisine. This cuisine evolved over hundreds of years as that prepared and served in Thailand’s royal palaces and so represents a pinnacle of ingredients, taste sensations and elegance of preparation and presentation. The courses begin with an introduction in which the students are taken to the fresh downtown market and taught how to select the very best and freshest ingredients and how to differentiate between good and bad quality. A hand-picked selection of suppliers also provide organically grown ingredients for the Blue Elephant guaranteeing the healthfulness, quality and freshness that are the basic pillars of this cuisine’s excellence. The sessions then progress in a classroom, with the cooking ranges and preparatory areas at the front upon which the teaching chefs work their magic. Overhead mirrors ensure that everyone can clearly see all that is going on. Our morning class focused on four dishes including red duck with roasted duck, grilled white snapper with herbs, spicy and sour prawn soup and that Isaan classic “laab” but with chicken rather than the more usual pork. Each required a great deal of detailed cutting and stirring of marvelously pungent ingredients such as Galangal, Lemon grass, Kaffir Lime, Sweet Basil, Garlic and Coriander Seeds. We sat in the lovely old wood-paneled room surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and seemed to be transported through the art of cooking to a nobler, gentler time while learning a great deal about this magical art. And of course the lunch afterwards was sensational. And why call this wonderful endeavor the Blue Elephant? Kim says it’s because blue is the royal colour on the Thai flag and the elephant is Thailand’s national animal. He also points out that if you saw a blue elephant you would never forget it. How very true! The Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant The Governor’s Mansion, 96, Krabi Road, Tambon Talad Neua Muang District. E-mail: phuket@BlueElephant.com

Without My Morning Coffee and Bagel, I Wouldn’t Make it Through the Day! By Dr. Kell

Sound Familiar?

After awakening most of us typically drink a cup of coffee to kick start the day along with a sugary pastry. Even though Starbucks now stocks their shelves with healthy snacks, most of us will still choose a donut to dunk in our morning caffeine kick, but in less than hour or two, we are already craving another cup and another snack to eat. By lunchtime you’re becoming damn right jittery. After packing down a burger, coke and fries, you return to work to begin the afternoon suddenly feeling very tired again, craving more sweets, and having a hard-time removing your head from your desk. If you’re wondering why this happens there’s good reason and it has do with our body’s response to eating carbohydrates especially simple carbs like pastries, breads, pastas, and sweets. It also has to do with an important hormone called “insulin” secreted by the pancreas. The purpose of insulin is to help remove sugar from the blood stream after you’ve eaten a meal containing carbohydrates. Insulin also helps to promote growth, sugar storage for later use and the formation of fats and proteins. Insulin functions by binding to receptor sites on the muscle and fat cells to help open up channels to allow the transfer of glucose, the fundamental unit of carbohydrate, into the cells for energy conversion. Insulin is released after it detects a certain level of glucose in the bloodstream. The only problem is that insulin levels remain high even though blood sugar levels return to normal after consuming the meal. With insulin hanging around it makes us crave more sugar. • Eye infections & vascularization • Excessive urination • Kidney disease • Nerve pain, numbness, tingling & pins & needles • Atherosclerosis • Vascular lesions • Susceptibility to infectious diseases • Pancreatic failure • Poor digestion • Increased blood pressure • Poor circulation • Increased blood clotting potential • Increased cholesterol • Obesity • Liver disease • Cancer • Increased inflammation • Female hormonal disorders continue along this path, we become insulin resistant, meaning that the cells will not respond to insulin therefore not allowing sugar into the cells. Later this can lead to diabetes. Diabetes Mellitus is a disease of sugar metabolism that is characterized by excessive levels of sugar in the bloodstream. There are actually two types of Diabetes Mellitus; Type I insulin dependent diabetes is caused by damage to the beta cells, whereas Type II non-insulin dependent diabetes is caused by excessive levels of sugar in the blood stream resulting in the cells of the body becoming non-responsive or resistant to insulin.

Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

• Fatigue • Craving for sugar • Inability to lose weight • Constant hunger • Fatigue after meals • Migrating aches and pains

To stop this disease process and the cravings we need to slow down the amount of sugar we dump into our blood. Simple sugars that do not have a lot of fiber enter the blood stream much more rapidly especially when combined with nicotine and caffeine propelling the sugar even faster. We need to choose our carbohydrates more wisely, preferably carbs high in fiber and combine them with protein and healthy fats. This includes intermittent snacks between our regular meals that contain all three food types. That way we can slow the insulin response and avoid the extreme peaks and valleys that cause us to roller-coaster throughout the course of the day. To treat insulin resistance before it enters the diabetic phase, a nutritional supplementation therapy program is of paramount importance.

Thai Massage Lazy Person’s Yoga Spa

Just focus on how fantastic you are going to feel after the massage and how great it is for your body and soul.

H

aving a massage during your holiday is a must, but there are so many choices it is difficult to narrow down the options. The humble Thai massage is the most commonly practiced in Thailand and can be experienced in expensive resorts, local massage places or even on the beach. But it’s important to know the facts before jumping into this particular style of massage as it is definitely an acquired taste, although well worth it afterwards.

What is Thai Massage?

It is definitely a more rigorous and energizing form of massage than the other classic types. Thai Massage originated in India and it is believed to have been brought to Thailand over 2,500 years ago. It is also called Thai yoga massage, because the therapist uses his or her hands, knees, legs and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. Some people even say it is like doing yoga without having to do any of the work. Treatment often begins with the feet and gradually moves

upwards towards the head. The body is gently arranged into four positions -facedown, face-up, side, and sitting positionwhich allows the therapist to perform a variety of exercises that would be otherwise unworkable. A typical massage lasts between one and two hours. No oil is applied during this massage, so you will be fully dressed, but you should try to wear loose-fitting and comfortable clothes. The therapist will compress and stretch your muscles, mobilize your joints and contact pressure points over your body during the treatment. It should not only align the energies of your body but also leave you in a much more balanced state of mind.

What are the health benefits?

There are many benefits for your body. At the basic level, it will relax muscles and release knots to relieve both tension and stress. If you have a particularly good therapist, you will also find it increases flexibility and joint movement as well as assisting in postural alignment. In the long

Health & Beauty / 35 term, with enough sessions, Thai massage will also strengthen your immune system, stimulate your internal organs and help heal long term injuries.

Can everyone have Thai massage?

Generally yes, although pregnant women should check with their doctor first and find a therapist who is trained to deal with massaging through pregnancy. If you have any infectious skin diseases, rashes or open wounds then you should also not have a Thai massage. If you have just had surgery or are prone to blood clots you might also want to give it a miss.

Some tips

Tell the therapist if you have never had a Thai massage before. They should then start more softly before working up to the hard stuff. Don’t eat a heavy meal before the massage or you will feel very uncomfortable as you are stretched and prodded - let your massage therapist know if you feel any discomfort. Also tell

your massage therapist if you have any pre-existing conditions and you aren’t sure if they will be compatible with having a massage.

And finally…

A considerable amount of privacy is provided in most places offering Thai massage, making it the perfect solution for the person who isn’t quite ready to face yoga. Not everyone has the physique or composure necessary to squeeze into spandex and curl into the “Downward Dog” position. But be prepared to get very close to your therapist. It isn’t uncommon to find yourself in the lap of your masseuse and you will feel hands on parts of your body that usually imply a more intimate experience. Just focus on how fantastic you are going to feel after the massage and how great it is for your body and soul.

Tawan Sea Adventures

T

here are dozens of tours that take people out and around Phang Nga Bay, from slow boats piled high with kayaks to speedboats that flit from island to island. But one thing they all have in common is that the destination is the thing. Get on boat. Thrash across the bay to an island. Take in the sights. Get on boat. Thrash across the bay to another island, and so on. Tawan Sea Adventures, which already runs a couple of very high end speed boats, has added a new dimension. Yes, you get to visit islands and take in the sights, swim or snorkel, but the boat trip itself is also high-octane entertainment. Instead of “getting on the bus”, passengers get the ride of their lives. Tawan have imported a Ballistic RIB (rigid inflatable boat) from South Africa. It’s probably the fastest boat on the bay, with a top speed just short of 40 knots (74 km/h), and incredibly manoeuvrable. It’s also so light that, even with the skipper and 10 passengers aboard, it’ll take off when you hit the wake of another boat at speed.

This boat literally flies.

We got to experience this recently, on a trip from Ao Por Grand Marina, where the boat is based, to Koh Kai Nork – the tiny island famed for fish that feed out of one’s hand. Passengers sit in pairs on the boat, life jackets on and perched on “jockey seats”, so that both feet can be planted firmly on the deck for balance. One fellow-traveller described the seats as Sybian-esque, a jaded but not inaccurate description. Skipper Lek plainly enjoys the job, describing tight S curves or doing complete 360s, all the while hunting the horizon for that perfect wave for take-off. Squeals and screams all round, as the boat tilts 45 degrees, first one way then the other. This is the closest thing to a roller coaster that you will find on the water. Everyone arrives back at the mooring with eyes glittering with adrenaline. Tawan currently runs three routes using the Ballistic: James Bond Island and Koh Hong; Koh Hong Krabi and Koh Yao; and Koh Kai Nork and Koh Naka Yai. Each takes three to four hours and the price of 3,900THB includes a packed lunch. You can check their website for the latest updates www.tawanseaadventures.com. www.theguidephuket.com

Story courtesy of Alisdair Forbes, phuketobserver.com

here are scores of alternative tours on offer in Phuket: boat trips; pristine tropical islands; sunset cruises; eco-tours; jungle trekking, elephant rides etc. We consider only a small number of these to be quality experiences. Price is not the only factor, though generally you do get what you pay for: buy the cheapest tour and you can expect to spend the day with a crowd of other tourists seeking the cheapest way.

Phang Nga Bay Day Trips (or James Bond Island) No visit to Phuket would be really complete if one never got to see and wonder at the geographic grandeur of Phang Nga Bay. Every visitor, surely, must have seen photos of Phuket’s neighbouring bay of gigantic rock mountains rising vertically from calm, olive-green waters even before getting here. The sight of Phang Nga is dramatic, and being surrounded by these towering rocky monoliths is surely one of the highlights of a visit to Phuket. We strongly recommend a visit here.

Koh Pannyi – also in Phang Nga Bay (or Sea Gypsy village) Following the visit to crowded James Bond the cheaper tours shepherd their clients to Koh Pannyi island, the stilted water village seen in so many postcards. Often given the tourist name of Sea Gypsy village, it is in fact a community of Muslim fishermen, not sea gypsies. This village is indeed fascinating. It’s a pity about the tourist crowds; all tours companies arrive here at the same time for lunch, bringing up to 2-3,000 people every day. Although worth a visit, there are better ways to get to Pannyi than by mass tourism.

Boat cruises to Phang Nga The boat tours to Phang Nga Bay – the kind that leave from Phuket Island - usually cruise past the James Bond commotion without stopping, continuing their quiet journey through the bay of mountains. This is by far the molst preferable way to visit this geographically spectacular region.

The BluEco Hotel is a harmonic and modern complex located in the heart of Kata Beach.

Sea Kayaking Many visitors consider a canoeing trip into the ‘hongs’, the hidden caves of Phang Nga, the highlight of their visit to Phuket. This mystical world of collapsed caves connected to the sea by dark tunnels has been eroded from the limestone mountains over time by the rise and fall of the sea. Numerous companies have sprung up, and it is worth looking around to avoid the cheap quickies. Sign up with one of the well-established companies, or with original company that discovered the hongs and began it all, Sea Canoe. This can be an unforgettable trip well worth the time and money.

We are the unique and outstanding holiday center which offering its guests the convenience and comfort with its green concept, and peaceful environment. The BluEco Hotel 100/75, Kata New Road, T. Karon, Muang, Phuket 83100 Tel. 076 333 315 Fax: 076 333 545 www.thebluecophuket.com

Renting your own speedboat

Equipment

Rental

Interestingly, most of the beautiful images of tranquil little islands and fabulously clear waters are taken on the outlying islands, not on Phuket itself. The only way to get to these islands is by renting a boat, and since there are few regular services your only option is to privately hire a speedboat for the day, although this is expensive it will provide you with memories to last a lifetime.

Please Call 085 571 1970

Renting Traditional Longtail Boats

If one wants a cheaper route, while taking in a cultural experience, rent a traditional, wooden ‘longtail’ boat. These are slower, but are also fun. Longtails are available on most of the major west coast beaches, or at the north end of Kata where they shelter at night. They are also available – at much better prices – from the boat pier at Chalong, or on the beach at Rawai, right at the southern tip of the island.

Can a Leopard Shark Change its Spots? T

he leopard shark seemed at ease as it gracefully circled us with lazy, swooping thrusts. And why not? After all it was in its natural habitat perfectly accustomed to its surroundings, whilst we hapless visitors from a distant world of blue skies and abundant oxygen, were decidedly out of our depth. I tried to decipher what the shark might be thinking by staring into its jet black eyes, but all I could conclude was that these creatures must be very good at poker. There was no information to be had there. During our briefing aboard Sea Bees’ vessel the MV “Marco Polo”, Renatta, our blonde-haired and exotically-tattooed dive master, had been at pains to explain that the regular shiver of sharks (yes, that’s the highly appropriate collective noun for sharks!) to be found around Racha Noi were only interested in dining on the piscine snacks we took down to them and were completely disinterested in devouring us. Being a frail looking accountant on a two week holiday in Phuket the close encounter with a two meter eating machine was more than enough excitement for my appetite.

www.theguidephuket.com

Watersports & Activities / 41

Next it was moray eels. “Shy retiring creatures”, according to Renatta, who like to spend their days well ensconced in their rocky burrows waiting for tasty morsels to troll on by. The one to whom we were introduced, immediately decided to leave his rocky burrow and swim around and through the various tanks and hoses that were keeping us alive in this alien world. Renatta found this amusing, I found it extremely worrying! The Lacy Scorpion fish was the next creature to make an appearance….. and what a bizarre appearance it was. A strange, hirsute-faced creature which also

sports venomous spines and so needs to be admired from a safe distance….in my case from some meters behind Renatta who was about two inches away from it, happily snapping pictures of “hairy face” with her underwater camera. Sea snakes are among the most venomous creatures on our planet. They are extremely curious creatures and tend to swim around divers checking them out in intimate detail. “Don’t worry” Renatta had said, “they have very small mouths and so find it hard to bite you….unless they get you between your fingers or toes, or bite onto your ear lobes.”

Oh, great! That’s all right then. The black and white sea snake we saw was about six feet long…. a mature male Renatta scribbled excitedly on her underwater writing board and it lived up to its reputation for curiosity by swimming around me as I tried to keep calm, with fingers and toes out of range, and trying to cover my ears….no mean feat. Finally a creature arrived to whom I felt I could actually relate and enjoy sharing this strange underwater world. A large Hawksbill Turtle gently glided past and graciously accepted some proffered bananas from us. This was more my speed I thought as Rennatta shot more pictures with her camera. Back on the boat Rennata explained that the day’s final dive was a bar in Soi Bangla to which the diving instructors regularly adjourned after a normal day’s dicing with underwater death. Here, she said, the scariest inhabitants were the lady boys and body building Aussies from the nearby Muay Thai camp.

Shopper’s Delight Thai Silk

Long one of Thailand’s most famous products, silk weaving is still one of the major crafts in many rural areas. The variety of materials available in Phuket is wide, and varies both in design, from the traditional to modern to plain colours, and quality; 2-ply is thin and light, 3-ply or more becomes heavier and more expensive. Tailors, jewellery and souvenir shops in all areas carry silk. Many shops will tailor modern dresses or shorts from silk at a fraction of the price you would pay back home.

Dream Gallery

Ceramics

The two major centres for ceramic production are the well-known Chiang Mai, and Ratburi west of Bangkok. They produce an amazing range of wares from very traditional Thai and even Chinese tableware and decorative items to modern home decor items, the biggest of which you’ll need a truck to move. Some of these more modern items are creative and interesting. There is a fair range spread around the island, but you’ll have to drive and hunt to find it all.

Woodcarving

Most of this comes from the craft centres of Chiang Mai, and again, Thai skills show through in a great variety of items that can be both novel and creative or entirely traditional. Buddha images are one of the standards, but you can find figurines of all kinds and many other offbeat items for home decoration. Thailand makes some great teak furniture, though only a little is available in Phuket.

Antiques

Beware if you’re looking for genuine antiques, for this is one real danger www.theguidephuket.com

zone in Thailand. Read the passage below on Instant Antiques carefully; and remember that most genuinely old pieces of traditional Thai art, including Buddha images, require permits to take from the country.

Instant Antiques

This sounds like a contradiction, but this is now a thriving new industry in Thailand that arose in response to the overwhelming demand for beautiful old things and the short supply. Originally, cunning entrepreneurs crafted and carefully ‘aged’ wood, bronze and stone artworks to sell off as genuine antiques. But they produced such beautiful things that demand grew, and the industry came out into the open. Today whole villages of skilled workers produce beautiful objects of art that appear ancient, but which are sold cheaply as ‘reproductions’. This makes ‘antiques’ available to everyone, takes the pressure off the genuinely old things, and, best of all, virtually no-one can tell the difference between the real thing and the reproduction that you place in your home.

Custom Tailoring

This is definitely bargain country in Phuket. Tailors can import their wares easily to Phuket, and their overhead costs are low. Skills range from excellent to barely adequate, so look carefully and you can go home with both quality and real savings. It is important to start with a tailor early in your visit because at least two visits will be required, and those who are a little more finicky should plan on three visits to get things just right. Allow two or three days between each visit. The Guide Phuket recommends: Mister Singh’s Fashion Gallery, Patong Beach, www.fashiongallery.com. James Fashion House, Karon Beach, www.jamesfashionhouse.com.

Jewellery

Bangkok is the undisputed gemstone capital of the world. A large portion of the world’s diamonds, rubies and sapphires and other precious stones are imported raw into Thailand, cut and set by Thailand’s skilled workforce, and exported - often back to the countries they came from. Most of South Africa’s diamonds, Australia’s opals, Burma’s rubies and Sri Lanka’s varied gems pass through Bangkok for processing. Thailand is definitely the best place to purchase precious stones and jewellery, and with transport costs so low all of these bargains can be found also in Phuket but be warned: purchase only from a well-established shop, and hopefully you will know at least a little about the gemstones you desire before entering the shop.

Central Festival Phuket Phuket Town

With over 120,000 square meters bursting with prime shopping opportunities and world-class products it is easy to see why this consummate one-stop shopping and entertainment complex is so popular amongst Phuket residents and visitors. With a large selection of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, supermarket and cinema you can enjoy the largest, most complete shopping and entertainment complex in southern Thailand.

Jungceylon - Patong Beach

Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shopping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylon‘ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and trading in the region was at its peak, this shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit for this alone. Shopping wise the choice is world-class, comprising of well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, res-

hinese antiques are becoming more and more fashionable but it can be difficult to find original and interesting pieces. The Dream Chinese Antique Studio was the result of, you guessed it, a dream in which the owner was summoned to come to Phuket by Buddha. Sounds a bit far fetched but it is a true story and the owner, already being a long time collector and enthusiast of ancient Chinese ornaments, opened her gallery with a small collection at first which has now grown into such a diverse and interesting range of artefacts, trinkets and other paraphernalia there really is something for everyone. As you wander through the gallery you will be amazed at how beautiful some of the pieces are, almost deserving of being placed in a museum for future prosperity. Antique handmade cabinets, statues, traditional Chinese earthenware, metalwork and wallhangings are all available. New items are added regularly, hand selected and imported directly from China. The Jatujak (or JJ) weekend market in Bangkok is world famous but few people realise that there is an equally good alternative here in Phuket, albeit on a smaller scale. Situated opposite the Naka Temple (which is also worth a visit) outside of Phuket Town, just 5 minutes from Central Festival on the Chao Fa West road lies Phuket’s equivalent to Bangkok’s JJ Market. Here you will find all manner of things for sales from seemingly useless second-hand household junk and cute little trinkets to garden ornaments, clothing and ideal presents for all your friends and family. There is also an abundance of food of drink stalls to keep the energy levels up whilst you wander around. The market starts in the afternoon and goes on until the evening time when it can get really very lively.

Transport on the Island

H

ow much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways.

To and from the airport

Airport transfers are relatively simple, the airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibus are available to get to the major beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available and are cheaper than the airport limousines, as are ‘private’ taxis but we suggest you avoid these since problems have been known to occur. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National, have offices located in the airport.

Airlines in & out of Phuket

A multitude of airlines now run scheduled flights to and from Phuket, and during high season chartered flights are also available. Budget airlines such as Air Asia, Nok Air and One-2-Go Air all run convenient and economical flights to other provinces throughout Thailand.

Song-taews

There are few buses on Phuket, and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the

back on two long benches. They are usually colourful, with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise around the streets, slowly, picking up passengers. It is slow, but cheap, with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

‘Tuk-Tuks’

If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the bigger song taew above to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all major tourist areas, and they will take you anywhere, for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can attempt to bargain but don’t expect much movement on their prices and be aware that at night the price of tuk-tuks shoots up. You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself.

Motorcycle taxis

These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking, way to get around. All fares must be negoti-

ated before the ride. These taxi riders are easily identified by their special coloured jackets identify-

ing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets.

Renting a motorcycle

Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times, and all riders to wear helmets – even though most Thais (including the police!) ignore the regulations. The police occasionally enforce both laws, so beware. The real danger here is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. If you rent one and cause damage you will be held fully responsible, with some greedy owners charging significantly more than the real cost of the damage. Be extremely cautious!

Renting your own car

Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are easily found in every beach area, and major rental companies operate in most resorts. If renting private vehicles from the side of the road, beware: few of these vehicles have insurance, and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighbouring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out.

Regional buses

The long distance bus station is in Phuket town, directly across from the Royal City Hotel. From here both air-con

tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Srithammarat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals. Most of the tour buses to Bangkok leave around 5pm arriving in Bangkok about 6am the following morning. Tickets can be purchased either at the bus station or through travel agents.

Transport by boat

Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi. Most people get to the other smaller islands by renting their own speed boats or even by chartering yachts. Whatever your chosen mode of transport may be, enjoy exploring the island, there is plenty to see and do, more than you might have realised. Happy hunting!
