BIG IN SPORT SINCE 1974 HI-TEC SPORTS was founded in 1974 in the appropriately named village of Shoeburyness, Essex, England by our Founder Chairman, Frank Van Wezel. Our original success grew from the breakthrough design and development of Hi-Tec’s first ever shoe, THE HI-TEC SQUASH, specifically designed for the then fast growing game of Squash. An industry benchmark then and now, few shoes in athletic footwear history have recorded unit sales of over 18 million pairs worldwide to date. The Hi-Tec Squash remains Britain’s all time best selling sports shoe model to this day. It was not until 1982 that the Hi-Tec brand name and logo were globally launched as a result of our decision to become a major worldwide sports brand. Today we are proud to report that there are over 500 Hi-Tec styles being commercialised throughout 80 countries worldwide, under the Hi-Tec Outdoor, Hi-Tec Court, Hi-Tec Golf, Hi-Tec Sport brands. A whole family of great products developed by sports and footwear experts for sports and footwear enthusiasts. The company currently employs approximately 500 employees and generates global sales of more than US $250 million.

THE VERTICAL BUILD SYSTEM The philosophy behind our exclusive V-Lite concept is simple: Creative combination of innovative materials and technologies in order to reduce weight, without compromising performance or comfort. Our V-Lite collection spans all of our categories drawing from Hi-Tec’s heritage in creating innovative, lightweight footwear and sacrificing nothing in terms of comfort, stability and performance. Each shoe in the V-Lite range is constructed using a vertical build system that surpasses the competition’s current technology and materials application. There are five main elements to the V-Lite Concept:
01
Lightweight Leather and Synthetic Uppers
02
Comfort-Tec Insole Technology
03

02 COMFORT-TEC FOOTBED Contoured and made from a quality foam EVA, our footbeds aid instant comfort through shock absorption points at the heel and forefoot. Each footbed has ventilation holes, allowing air to pass right through to keep the foot cool and fresh. The footbeds also contain a moisture wicking lining which guarantees you cool, dry feet throughout prolonged use. Shock absorption points Ventialtion holes

0 3 S TA B I L A F L E X P L U S Made from recycled plastics our multi density lasting board provides the rigidity of a steel shank without the excess weight. Tortional rigidity is achieved via the denser rear area of the board while the front of the board remains thinner to allow for the natural flex motion of the foot. The StabilaFlex-Plus board is also contoured, this makes for a better fit and combats any unwanted lateral movement of the foot within the footwear. Tortional rigidity provides the wearer with the support required to prevent ankle ligament damage and pulling of the foot tendons. Such injuries can occur when walking without ankle support on uneven surfaces found in the great outdoors, undulations on the Golf Course and when moving laterally on the Court. 04 LIGHTWEIGHT MIDSOLE The mid-sole is where most of the shock absorption takes place within our footwear. Made from Compression Moulded Ethel Vinyl Acetate (CMEVA) the V-Lite midsole not only weighs less than standard EVA, but is also lighter than conventional CMEVA. All of our midsoles are contoured for good support and fit.

05 LIGHTWEIGHT MDT OUTSOLE Our low-profile, lightweight, carbon rubber outsoles fall under the MDT (Multi Directional Traction) family of outsoles. The lugs are angled to ensure grip uphill, downhill and to allow mud to be ‘kicked out’ at the earliest opportunity maintaining maximum grip for as long as possible. The low profile alloy of carbon and rubber materials in the sole unit means the sole is both flexible, yet durable without the need for thick heavy lugs found in traditional outdoor footwear. In all categories the outsole uses minimum rubber in non-critical areas, which reduce the weight of the sole by up to 15%. Our V-Lite tennis shoes contain a MDT herringbone tread suitable for all court surfaces. In Golf we have a V-Lite sole unit that uses a high density CMEVA outsole instead of rubber to reduce weight without compromising performance. V-Lite Technical running shoes utilise a softer, lighter and more shock absorbent rubber in the forefoot.

T H E 4 : S Y S O F N AT U R E For 2 years Hi-Tec worked with SATRA速 to examine the dynamics of the foot in a variety of sporting contexts. The basis of the approach, utilising the latest pressure mapping technology, was to assess and evaluate the highpressure areas of the foot during the respective sporting movements. The running / walking study has revealed that there are four critical phases to the running gait. Heel strike, mid-foot stance, forefoot and toe off. The new insight here is the high pressure that is driven through the big toe and the critical role that plays in balance, stability and forward propulsion. From this advanced research Hi-Tec developed the 4:SYS concept to reflect the different forces applied by the bare foot during the running gait.

The BLUE areas indicate low to zero impact areas of the running gait.

The GREEN areas indicate medium impact areas of the running gait.

Page 15
THE CONCEPT Hi-Tec believe that if the footstrike wearing shoes could more closely reflect that of the barefoot then that could yield some significant benefits to the runner. This lead Hi-Tec to develop the 4:SYS midsole configuration which is intended to encourage the foot to function in a more natural way. The 4:SYS midsole works by optimising the material used in the various sections of the midsole, which in turn reflect the demands of the barefoot. 8 grades of material have been moulded into the midsole - softest where the highest pressure is exerted, stiffer where support is required and energy return materials in the forefoot and ‘toepulsion’ zone, where an element of propulsion is required. The ‘Toe-Off’ Area Unique ‘toepulsion’ area to spread impact energy and return it to allow ‘spring’ into next step The Forefoot Area For cushioning and energy return to help forward motion
The Midfoot Area For support. Stiffer, denser materials support the foot during transition or stance phase.
The Heel Area For cushioning and shock absorption. Softest density in the centre to reflect the highest pressure zone during heel strike.
Hi-Tec 4:SYS technology has been designed to encourage the foot to return towards the barefoot strike, subsequently delivering a more natural, more stable and more direct line transfer of energy during the running footstrike. 15

T H E L A B R E S U LT S Independent research by Biomechanics experts Quintic Consultancy has shown that channelling the energy through the 4:SYS midsole has enabled Hi-Tec to create a shoe that delivers: 1. a faster foot strike (i.e. the foot is in contact with the ground for a shorter period of time) which by definition it gives the runner a more energy and time efficient stride. 2. a midsole that places less strain on the lower leg, which is essential in stabilising the foot during the footstrike. Competitors Product

Competitor products showed a less efficient stride and more of a ‘wobble’ during this energy transfer which results in a more unstable, therefore less efficient stride.
The 4:SYS midsole directly channels energy towards the centre of the heel seat region (A) then encourages this energy through the centre line axis line until toe off in the most direct route possible (B). 16

H O W I T WA S A C H I E V E D The CDT concept is simple, the technology is patented and it really works. Biomechanics Scientist Dr. Paul Hurrion uses the anology “You wouldn’t fire a canon from a canoe”. The proof, Padraig Harrington, instrumental in the development of CDT Technology is hitting his driver an average of 17.5 yards further. The CDT shoes provide you with added grip and torsion which gives you the confidence to swing the club with a faster head speed and therefore impacting the ball with more energy, equating to longer distance. No single technology in the shoe can be credited in gaining the extra power, control and distance, rather the creative combination of components that result in the worlds first game improvement golf shoe. The key components that contribute are:
The Launch Pad Outsole
The CDT Cleat
T H E FA C T S 88% of players improved the consistency and accuracy of their shots using a 5 iron during testing in the CDT Power shoes. 100% of golfers using CDT Power shoes said they were hitting the ball further during testing. Since changing into the CDT Power shoes Padraig Harrington’s ball speed has risen from 166mph 173mph.

T H R E E U N I Q U E T E C H N O LO G I E S Top level badminton and squash are amongst the most physically demanding of sports. In both, the ability to decelerate and stop, change direction and move again in a split second is critical. Working with biomechanical experts Quintic Consultancy and our world champion squash and badminton stars, Hi-Tec has spent over two years redefining the meaning of performance footwear. The result is three unique technologies grounded in science and logic which combine to deliver you provably more cushioning, control, stability and grip. Movement in badminton is much more vertical/overhead, more reactionary and the forces, up to 6X bodyweight, are also greater than squash. Players are also on their front foot more often. The ‘stance of readiness’ in badminton is a good example.
THE SHOES IN ACTION The images show the Hi-Tec 4:SYS badminton shoe and two competitors shoes tested by World Champion Nathan Robertson. 4:SYS IN ACTION The Hi-Tec shoe clearly shows the pressure distribution is more evenly spread than either competitor A or B. PEAK FORCE IN ACTION The red marker shows the point of Peak Force through the waist. It is this point that the shot is played. The Hi-Tec S:SYS shoe clearly shows the foot is supported under the point of Peak Force, this means: Greater Surface contact = better grip More even spread of pressure = more stability

BADMINTON As such the 4:SYS badminton shoe is designed to work with the dynamic nature of the game at any given moment. Due to the speed with which badminton is played, the ability to decelerate, stop and change direction is curcial. These movements can be split into three categories, stopping when: • Moving away from the net • Moving sideways across the net • Moving towards the net The most common way all players stop and decelerate efficiently is by performing a lunge. Due to the short distances, high impact forces must be accepted quickly and efficiently to prevent injury.
SQUASH With players looking to dominate the ‘T’, movement in squash is more routine based. Lunging is predominant, generally with a shallower angle and lower force than badminton. Squash players can still reach 4 - 5 X bodyweight and as a result the shoe has a wider footprint and extended forefoot energy return element. Lateral support is also considered to provide a more stable platform. As with badminton the speed at which squash is played means the ability to decelerate and change direction is crucial. These movements can be split into three categories, stopping when: • Moving towards the rear wall • Moving sideways across the court • Moving towards the front wall The most common way players stop and decelerate efficiently is by performing a lunge. Due to the short distances, high impact forces must be accepted quickly and efficiently to prevent injury.

BENEFIT
• Up to 38% more effective shock absorption • Equivalent to 20-25 X your bodyweight • Or one third better than any other shoe available
• The 4:SYS midsole increase the time from heel contact to shot by .008 secs or 33% • This controlled decelleration leads to an average reduction of force of 195.6n or 35% • Therefore 4:SYS reduces the transfer of energy from heel strike to when the shot is played • Loading rates are a key predictor to injury potential
• 6 times better grip • Better stability • Improved pressure and force distribution
IMPACT ZONE Hi-Tec’s Impact Zone helps to control and stabilise your landing. How? Simply it delivers the cushioning and support you need at the critical position of impact towards the rear of your heel. The impact forces experienced during a game are huge and what’s more the contact anglesduring a lunge, compared to running, are also extreme. Combined these angles forcus huge force through the back rear of the heel.Hi-Tec’s Impact Zone compound has been uniquely developed to deal with these forces in this specific location. Whilst the position of the Impact Zone is critical it is also how it combines with the 4:SYS midsole technology that helps to attenuate forces during your lunge.

4:SYS Your footwork during a rally is dynamic and constantly changing. Your footwear needs to react to every movement. 4:SYS technology is the culmination of 3 years research and testing into the dynamics of movement. It delivers more support, stability and control by increasing the time from heel contact to shot. This in turn reduces the transfer of energy during your footstrike. Each 4:SYS shoe adopts 5 different densities in seven locations to deliver more control and stability. It does not isolate pressure zones into 2 areaslike some traditional shoes but works holistically. Shock absorbing materials are located in zones 1 & 2 to control and stabilise your lunge and landing. Energy return materials are located in zones 3 and 4 to provide lift after the shot is played.

For both Badminton and Squash the waist area is flat to the court during the moment of Peak Force, which is also when the shot is played.
Our research with Quintic Consultancy has identified that the highest moment of maximum force or Peak Force also coincides with the moment you play your shot. Crucially the location of this point of Peak Force is through the waist of the shoe. Therefore to provide the best grip, support and control at the critical moment the shoe needs to be flat through its waist or middle. During our research we found that all court shoes suffered from slip - up to 30mm on average. When this occurs the body has to work harder to stabilise. This leads to reduced efficiency and an increase in the probability of injury.
For maximum grip/stability/control sole should be flat to the court.
The Peak Force outsole provides up to 6 times better grip than other leading footwear. 29

V E N T I N G B E AT S “ B R E AT H I N G ” eVENT® waterproof technology provides maximum comfort for activity in harsh environments and keeps footwear DRY INSIDE™ by venting perspiration vapour through millions of unimpeded microscopic pores engineered into a durable waterproof membrane. Other breathable fabrics function by an indirect and slow process of absorption and evaporation. They contain a solid barrier of polyurethane that inhibits the passage of perspiration vapour. Only eVENT® technology offers Direct Venting™. There are microscopic vents engineered into the fabric, which allow unhindered passage of perspiration vapour. This avoids the moisture retention and breathability inhibiting effects of polyurethane, and noticeably reduces the uncomfortable build up of moisture in the microclimate between the body and the eVENT® membrane. Conventional Waterproof Membrane Conventional waterproof “breathable” fabrics try to move moisture through a solid barrier, usually polyurethane. Though the amount of perspiration that escapes the fabric can be measured in a laboratory, its benefit is seldom noticed during actual use. Other waterproof fabrics contain a solid barrier that slows the passage of perspiration.
eVENT® Waterproof Membrane 5000x magnification shows the microscopic vents that provide eVENT® technology’s unmatched performance. Water from the outside cannot enter but perspiration vapour escapes through millions of unimpeded microscopic vents. This unique method of function keeps users noticeably drier. eVENT® membrane contains millions of microscopic vents

HOW DOES eVENT® WORK? eVENT Membrane Perspiration vapour travels directly through the eVENT® membrane’s microscopic vents. No moisture is held in the membrane, so the fabric layers and the microclimate beneath remain DRY INSIDE™.
OUTER FABRIC
eVENT MEMBRANE
SKIN
Conventional Membrane Perspiration vapour from the body condenses on the waterproof, breathable membrane. Once enough moisture is built up it is absorbed into the layer of PU. When enough body heat is developed, the moisture evaporates from this layer and passes through the outer fabric. BUT by this time the fabric layers are already WET INSIDE, meaning the skin is not kept dry.

W H AT I S S Y M PAT E X ® ? Sympatex® is unique. Unlike other waterproof membranes, it is a nonporous material providing high moisture transmission which allows your feet to breathe whilst still remaining dry. Sympatex® is also resistant to clogging from dirt and oils, so moisture transmission can continue despite harsh external outdoor environments. It has 2 componets (a co-polymer) Polyester and Polyether. Polyester rejects water (Hydrophobic), Polyether attacts water (Hydrophilic). This composition allows water vapour to be pulled through the membrane without it needing holes (an Intelligent Hydrophilic Membrane). Conventional Waterproof Membrane Microscopic holes in the membrane are too small for water droplets to pass through from the outside, but are large enough to allow water vapour through from the inside.
Sympatex® Waterproof Membrane Sympatex® offers a complete barrier against the elements. The water vapour is pulled through the membrane on a molecular level – therefore no need for holes. This is known as an Intelligent Hydrophilic Membrane.

T H E N E X T G E N E R AT I O N With Sympatex HIGH2OUT, a further benefit has been added to the already well-known characteristics of functional footwear: the transport of LIQUID perspiration away from the foot. Through a combination of the hydrophilic (water-loving) Sympatex membrane and an extremely absorbent layer, Sympatex HIGH2OUT quickly and effectively absorbs the liquid perspiration that develops during high levels of bodily exertion, thus accelerating the drying process. Benefits of Sympatex HIGH2OUT Sympatex HIGH2OUT offers 120% more breathability than conventional Sympatex laminates. Sympatex HIGH2OUT minimises heat build-up and prevents moisture forming from condensation in the shoe. Sympatex HIGH2OUT supports the natural temperature control of the body, both when active and at rest.

TEC-PROOF Dri-Tec waterproof system is a resin that is pasted onto the flip side of the upper during manufacturing which seals all seams of the footwear making it watertight. Dri-Tec gives complete waterproof protection however it does not afford the breathable qualities of Tecproof“, Event and Sympatex.
DRI-TEC Hi-Tec’s own waterproof, breathable pourus membrane, which is extremely strong and offers full waterproofing whilst still allowing the foot to breathe.
HYDRO-TEC Hydro-Tec is a moisture wicking comfort lining that is used on products across all categories. The micro-construction of the lining draws moisture away from the source and swiftly dries when exposed to air leaving the wearer cool and comfortable for sustained periods of time. Lightweight and breathable, Hydro-Tec is what your body needs when under exertion. Other moisture wicking linings Hi-Tec use include Drilex® and Nylex®.
POLIYOU® Poliyou® is an anti-bacterial cushioning foam with superb moisture management properties found in some of our Comfort-Tec sockliners. It is 100% breathable, allowing air to pass right through to keep the foot cool and fresh. Poliyou® contains activated carbon and anti-bacterial agents to strike at the cause of foot odour before it has an opportunity to develop. The intrinsic cushioning effect of Poliyou® means it retains its shape to give the wearer an instantly comfortable feel. 42

ABRAZONE - ABRAZONE 3D Abrazone is a specifically selected durable polyurethane used in areas of the upper where durability is required. Abrazone 3D is manufactured using a new technique where mould-able polyurethane material is directly injected onto pu or mesh. This makes the composite material protective, lightweight and breathable, perfect for use within the high wearing toe drag area of Court footwear or the toe bumper area of outdoor products.
M DT O U T S O L E S Multi Directional Traction outsoles are all designed to provide maximum grip in specific directions. Herringbone tread is used within our Court products to improve grip sideways on the lateral side and forward facing tread through the centre of the shoe for grip when lunging. Within our Outdoor and Golf products traction lugs are used to optimise traction both uphill and downhill with a subtle brake pad at the heel for added durability and grip. Whatever your Sport, whatever the Terrain Hi-Tec MDT Outsoles make sure you never come unstuck.

QUALITY ASSURANCE Due to the increased technical nature of our products the level of testing and quality control has become a highly sophisticated and crucial element of the footwear production process no more so than with waterproof testing. Waterproof Testing The following tests are carried out to ensure that all Hi-Tec products intended to be waterproof are indeed waterproof. The footwear is engineered to be waterproof from its very inception and tested throughout the development process. Waterproof tests are performed on the entire shoe/boot as well as all components. The following methods are used: Flex Testing Machine
Footwear is tested semi-submerged in water to the equivalent of 26 miles (14 hours) of walking to ensure that it does not leak through prolonged use. Seam Sealing Test These methods test the seam of the Waterproof membrane to ensure they are sealed correctly. They use pressure to check the quality of the seal.

QUALITY ASSURANCE Tension Test This measures the tensile strength of the waterproof membrane. It can also measure the inherent strength of upper materials and the attachment strength of eyelets and other hardware.
Water Vapour Permeability This machine simulates foot temperatures and humidity, testing the ability of the upper materials or waterproof membrane to absorb moisture and the ability of these materials to allow moisture vapour to pass through (to breathe).
Abrasion Test This machine is used to determine the abrasion resistance of all types of fabrics used in our footwear.

FIT TESTING Quarter and Back Height
The height of the top-line of a shoe at the back and at the quarters affect fit and comfort. If the back height is too low heel slip may occur during walking. If the quarters, particularly the outside quarter, are too high the top-line may rub the ankle bone. To carry out measurements the gauge is placed inside a shoe on the insole at the seat. It is a simple but accurate device and is used in routine fit assessment work by Hi-Tec technical personnel.
Internal Shoe Size Gauge
This simple and easy to use device is used in combination with our standard fitting routines to determine the size of footwear. The flat bar is inserted in the shoe and pushed into the toe. The slider is then moved along the scale until the curved bar touches the heel. The longest length can be found by moving the device vertically and locating the curved bar to the point of maximum heel curvature . At this point the size of the footwear can be read off the scale.

QUALITY CONTROL During mass production the footwear materials are tested by factory quality control personnel to ensure the product meets quality standards. Checks are carried out at different stages of manufacture and on different components as follows: 1. Materials
when the materials first enter the factory in their raw state
2. Pressing
after the sole materials are pressed from the moulds
3. Cutting
after the upper materials are cut from the material rolls
4. Stitching
following stitching of the uppers
5. Stock fitting checks on sole bonding are carried out 6. Assembly
Whole shoe tests are completed e.g. waterproof testing
Following this process each pair of footwear that comes off the production line is given a final quality check.

W AT E R P R O O F & B R E AT H A B I L I T Y What do we mean by waterproof? When our footwear is described as waterproof it means that it has been seam seal treated or has a membrane within it that will not allow the water to pass through. What is Breathability? Breathability is not about the ability of a fabric to allow perspiration (or moisture) vapour to pass through it. Materials with good breathability allow the foot to keep cool and dry. How do fabrics breathe? When we perspire, moisture vapour escapes from our skin. It turns to a liquid when it condenses and this can be seen as beads of sweat on the skin. A fabric will breathe if it does not impede the movement of this moisture vapour. Waterproof membranes prevent ingress of water from the environment, whilst allowing moisture vapour from inside the footwear to escape. There are two different structures of breathable membranes: Porous (with pores/holes) i.e Tecproof and Non-Porous (without pores/holes) i.e Sympatex.
L A S T S - W H AT A R E T H E Y ? The Last is an abstract copy of the human foot in a solid form. One of its functions is to take the place of the human foot in the production phase as a working surface on which flat leather components & synthetic uppers can be given shape. The footwear lasts provide the foundation for the precise form and fit of Hi-Tec footwear. These hunks of plastic, cast in the shape of feet, equip each boot and shoe with the ability to support the foot, also anticipating how the foot flexes and changes shape when in motion. Together with the upper's design and materials, Hi-Tec lasts have determined the fit, feel, and performance of footwear since our first shoe back in 1974. Each Hi-Tec last is designed with the function of the footwear in mind with consideration made to offer a comfortable fit to suit.

FOOTWEAR CARE Cleaning Dirt is best removed when dry and brushed off. Use a damp cloth/sponge using clear water to remove only the most stubborn dirt. Drying Never dry footwear using a direct heat source. If footwear is very wet then use paper pushed inside to speed up the drying process and to keep the inside shape of the boots/shoes. Let footwear dry naturally. Applying Wax Apply wax to seams of new footwear. Leather, when new, has a smooth factory finish and will not accept treatment until it is scuffed or shows signs of wear. Be careful to treat fabric or leather with the correct product as recommended by your retailer. Suede and Nubuck Leather Use a brush to restore the nap but avoid hard brushing as this may give a shabby look. Treat with a cleaner or conditioner available from most retailers. After prolonged use nubuck and suede can become dry, brittle and cracked. The conditioner will help stop this happening in the first place and help replenish moisture and rejuvenate as well as offering water and dirt repellency. Fabric Uppers Fabric Uppers are generally not waterproof unless they have a lining such as Sympatex速 or Tecproof速. Their performance can be further enhanced by ensuring the outer fabric is water repellent. The outer can be treated to repel water on both lined and unlined models. This may possibly darken the colours. When waterproofing footwear always use a product with a low oil content, this will not break down or clog the membrane causing reduced breathability. Shoe Deodorant Certain deodorants contain an anti-bactericide, which effectively destroys the bacteria that causes odour. Sprayed into footwear after prolonged use will leave them smelling fresh ready for the next activity.
