Now the historic city of Oxford has welcomed its own Herzog and de Meuron project. The recently completed Blavatnik School of Government, funded by Russian media tycoon Leonard Blavatnik, is a beautiful building based on a series of shifted discs in concrete and glass. Chosen not only for their stunning design, but also for their reputation for great attention to detail and exceptional quality, Herzog and de Meuron have delivered a powerful build that is respectful of its surroundings whilst not seeking to mimic them. Moving inside, the softer and more gentle elements of the design are more apparent. The use of European oak floors from the basement, through a series of wide spiralling staircases, culminating in a broad plain at atrium level, undeniably creates a structural warmth within a build that will educate the world leaders of the future.
