The History of Natural Dyeing
Dyeing is an ancient art which predates written records. It was practiced during the Bronze age in Europe. Primitive dyeing techniques included sticking plants to fabric or rubbing crushed pigments into cloth. The methods became more sophisticated with time and techniques using natural dyes from crushed fruits, berries and other plants, which were boiled into the fabric and gave light and water fastness (resistance), were developed.

At Orta, we have always had a great passion for natural dyestuffs and dyeing techniques. It was only 15 years ago that we first started our trials using various raw materials. The major constraint for dyeing fabric with natural dyestuff was the difficulty in producing good colour intensity and shade consistency. This problem was due to the vegetal dyestuff’s lack of affinity to dye cotton.
(* affinity: the degree to which dyestuff tends to combine with cotton)

Introducing ORTA
In 2014, Orta developed a new dyeing methodology that thoroughly overcomes the problems of affinity and consistency and obtains intensive shades both in vegetal indigo and other colours. As a result of long-term research study, this technology ensures the increase in affinity of dyestuff to cotton and results show greater stability and consistency in dyeing.
Vegan Denim
We are proud to be the first in the industry to produce fabric using this method at an industrial scale. The process complies with global standards and it is sustainable. Potentially any natural dye can be used. No limitation on constructions for the application for natural fibers. Orta has legal protection over the methodology. It is subsidized by European Union Research Funds.
