and the awakened are all… one in the same… a play of energy, time, matter and space… in a place of only energy, no time, no matter, and only space. Shall we awaken to our own sleepy land of creation; acknowledging that in this awakening, we are not yet awake, but are able to realize that we are and have been asleep. YOGA OF GRATITUDE Grasping for what we don’t have is greed. Gratitude for what we do have is Grace. When relationships run awry, it is difficult to be grateful. If we feel stress and distance, rather than comfort and closeness, the last thing that comes to mind is gratitude. This is the mind talking. When strife and suffering enter our lives from a strained relationship, how different might we perceive our experience if we embrace this gift life is giving us, and offering thanks for what we are receiving? This is quite a change in perception. But in that change, a whole new dimension opens...the dimension of Grace. Instead of analyzing everything that went wrong or what we think is wrong with our beloved, we must welcome shifts in relationships as portals to this new dimension. Contemplate: What is life trying to teach us? This is the essence of Santosha—the second Niyama. Contentment with everything as it is, no matter what we may think about it. It is living in a state of satisfaction all along the way. How often do we feel grateful for everything we have instead of complaining about what we don’t have? Those who are content are not forever searching for what they think happiness looks like. They are not perfectionists; they are realists. Even when perfectionists achieve what they think they have been looking for, they are still not happy—they keep looking for more to fulfill them. Waiting for happiness in the future is impossible. At the end, they are still searching. The price of the effort is too high. Realists know the secret to genuine happiness is being grateful and happy right now with whatever we have. It is effortless joy—joy without a cause. It comes from a deep wellspring of trust and faith. Receiving what we have from a place of non-ego is pure Grace. Do not ever claim it or take credit for it. When we are in this space, we not only feel full, others sense it as well. The peace that comes from grace emanates gratitude and equanimity.

Strengthening the Container How do we contain what we receive? Think of Grace as a sieve filled with prana. If our container is weak, the sieve is full of holes, leaking prana as we complain, criticize and bemoan our situation. The stress of static in the mind is the drone of discontent, poking more and more holes in our container. These holes all have names: anger, upset, reaction, disapproval, resentment, and on and on. Resources come from doing; gratitude comes from Grace. If we demand something from another, forget about it. If we ask with expectation, we may get it, but it comes with resentment. When we are joyful from Grace, all good things naturally come without asking. Being grateful for however our relationship is showing up in any given moment guarantees that complaining suddenly drops away. Our view of life shifts. We no longer see issues in relationships as unsolvable problems. From a place of openness and gratitude, problems resolve themselves.

Transforming the difficult Child: From the perspective of working with our children... and our inner children

We give the gifts of our energy in many splendored wrappings; by way of relationship and the many textures and manners of how we give the gift of relationship…through our mannerisms, the magnitude and tone of our voice, our emotionality and other such nuances of how everything from our frustrations and joys seep through to the child. Children read energy like braille. We essentially unknowing are always giving the gift of us. However, ultimately we get to choose how and when we transmit the gift of our energies. By way of normal parenting we may occasionally acknowledge and appreciate our children when they are being respectful and responsible, however even as devoted positive parents those moments can so often go unnoticed and only be far and few between. The high water mark instances of ‘respect and responsibility’ might not get more expression than an incidental compliment such as ‘thank you’ or ‘good job.’ Understandably we have busy lives and it can be hard to find the time. However we are seemingly never too busy to stop what we are doing 100 percent of the time when disrespect or irresponsibility emerge. Our kids are getting the gift of ‘us’ in sparse ways for what we want but are getting the rich and full gift of us when things are going wrong. Along the way, it became evident to me that children interpret energy as love! So the problem is that if a child has a little more intensity than the next child, essentially more life force which is a great thing, they are that much more craving of full on relationship and that much more prone to discovering that they can get the greater gift of us by way of messing up…and patterns can easily form. They can easily come to feel it’s a much better bet to get our rich relationship through negativity. The risk however, is that this can wind up taking them down a path of feeling more loved, more meaningful and more valued by way of adversity. No one would dream of giving a child a $100 bill for screwing up, but energetically we do that all www.1111mag.com

the time by way of normal, conventional and traditional approaches that have us reactively teaching lessons and doling out reactive levels of frustration and corrective lectures, reprimands and escalating levels of punishment in the midst of the problem. To solve the riddle we merely need to go beyond normal ways of interacting. My work with highly intense and difficult children in my practice as a family therapist led me to one such answer. I developed what came to be called the Nurtured Heart Approach and it simply calls for seeing children profoundly and honoring who they really are by appreciatively calling them out for the beauty of the qualities they are showing when good choices are being made AND when poor choices aren’t. Honoring children as well for rules not broken adds fuel to the fire of their greatness. When a rule is broken, not looking the other way, always delivering a consequence, but having that consequence simply being an non-energized notice of a reset. That creates a simple pause in the action and as soon as the rule is then not being broken, sometimes just seconds later, the child is subsequently honored for the truth of that next NOW – for the choice of no longer being breaking the rules and the character traits that reveals. Children love this level of empowerment and the vast majority of challenging children respond beautifully to now getting very rich and nutritious relationship for the beauty of their true self and great choices. For this to come to fruition we must first and foremost show that we are no longer available through negativity. The burden of proof falls squarely on us. Calling resets when needed helps vastly to allay all the explanation, lectures, reprimands and expressions of frustrations that happen so instinctually in contentious moments by way of normal and traditional methods of parenting. So how might this translate to our ‘inner difficult child?’ On any given day our ‘inner child’ may be contentious, unruly, anxiety ridden and more. What I’ve experimented personally with for the last fifteen years is applying the very same model explained above to myself. Prior to the time of that choice I came to realize that even though I thought I was a highly positive person, when push came to shove and life was impinging on me, I was actually the opposite. I set out to change that default setting by applying the Nurtured Heart Approach. Even though I was trained formally in Clinical Psychology, all other methods I had learned had by this time fallen away and this approach is what I had my faith in. If you think about it, we’ve internalized and adapted the same questionable normal and conventional models of parenting to how we respond to ourselves via our inner conversations that, as explained above, can backfire so readily with our challenging children, and can do the same inside by inadvertently rewarding our own negativity. 12

We say we are positive but that can be lip service since our inner positive conversations can be skimpy and meager compared to the extensive inner dialogue when things go wrong. We all have greatness waiting to be seen, appreciated and nourished. I love resetting when I catch myself going negative and choosing to use that energy for the next harvest. We are already masters of NOT great. Just turn on the news and you will see a whirlwind of evidence of how we seem to worship that never ending unfolding of our world’s negativity, but how often to we truly cherish GREAT? How many of us even hear about our greatness while we are alive. For most of us the first time we hear about our greatness is at our memorial service when friends and family wax poetically about how very great we were and the many splendored forms of greatness we live and exemplified. So why wait? Why not sow our own seeds of greatness while we can enjoy the process and make it all useful. THE DOCTRINE OF SIGNATURES Our current medical model is completely out of sync with those who are by nature “spiritual,” and to whom the notion of separating parts in exclusion from the composite body is equally absurd. Knowing the operations of energy, especially in terms of the morphing process of the four elements, we must consider the metaphysical properties of form, particularly that of the human body. For relevance regarding the practice of medicine, it’s helpful to remember that from the scientific viewpoint, no matter the “first cause” of creation, life force is energy. The laws of physics and thermodynamics show that energy is conserved--it does not die, but merely changes forms. Taken from this perspective, the idea that human life force energy (or any living creature’s) can change form once the physical body dies is plausible. From a strictly scientific perspective, this continuation of life energy does not require a theological mediator or savior. From the Hermetic perspective, whatever governs the subtle realms and higher octaves of space also governs the lower physical octaves of life.   What is helpful, if not required, is having a language that provides a roadmap for understanding the human being’s connection to the cosmos.   This is the relevance astrology brings to the process of responding to the larger cycles and hierarchical influence. It also facilitates understanding in the application of the doctrine of signatures to each human’s life and, as applied by both Paracelsus and Agrippa Von Nettesheim (1486-1535), provides alchemical information regarding the process of healing. Despite its controversy, we have to consider the longevity that has been demonstrated by astrology. 16

While its popularity has waxed and waned over the centuries, like the moon, it remains ever present, orbiting the mainstream. For this reason alone it deserves consideration as part of the historical, medical, and philosophical milieu of human inquiry. THE THREE-FOLD NATURE OF HOROSCOPES AND HUMANS

In The Culture of Astronomy, Dietrich posits that cosmic law informs natural law. Cosmic law expresses the inherent order, harmony, and interrelationship of all things. The ancients believed that the heavens were the divine expression and means of communication between humans and their creator. They believed that the human body, created in the image of the cosmic body of the creator, was imbued with divine characteristics.   Not only the human body, but Earth, as a celestial body moving through the precession of the equinoxes, experiences the attributes of the twelve zodiacal houses that represent the cosmic body: Aries (head), Taurus (neck), Gemini (shoulders/arms), Cancer (breasts), Leo (heart), Virgo (intestines), Libra (forearms, navel, lumbar), Scorpio (genitals, reproductive system), Sagittarius (thighs), Capricorn (knees), Aquarius (calves, ankles), and Pisces (feet).

AWAKENING PARADISE Experimenting With Pure Tones

I do my best in my Aramaic toning circles to focus on the very important understanding that the true power of vocal toning does not lie in flawless technique, a great voice, perfect pronunciation or anything other than simply doing it with an open heart and mind. The real magic of toning is in the process itself and not in any predetermined rules or steps that we should be following. Though I am revealing the ancient Near Eastern Aramaic Gnostic nuance of meaning within these words and sounds, that does not in any way mean that the Aramaic meanings are correct and those of another language are wrong. I often explain these variances in cultural and linguistic meanings of the same words and sounds as multiple people observing a large, shimmering, multifaceted diamond from numerous points of view. In other words, how could we NOT observe our personal experiences of the same object of perception differently? Within this understanding lies the greatest depth of potential experience through the process of vocal toning. Again, the spark lies in our openness to the direct experience of the tones themselves. Let go, at least in the beginning, of any need to define or put descriptive words to your experience and instead just do it. The most immediately productive way to introduce toning to a newbie is to begin by toning pure vowel sounds such as aye, ee, eye, oh and oo. The key here is, again, not in perfect pronunciation or enunciation, but rather in our willingness to be open to the direct experience of the sound itself. Even after two decades of consciously toning as a spiritual practice, I myself do not tone to recognize or observe some pre-defined meaning or quality of the sound I am toning. I simply open myself mindfully into the experience and begin toning while remaining open and aware of how I feel. It is literally that simple. Overcomplicating the toning process will not offer us a better experience, but rather just a more mental, intellect-based one. 24

Another very important thing to understand is that the pitch or tone that resonates well for me will not necessarily be the pitch that resonates well for you. If I were to sit James Earl Jones beside Celine Dion, I am quite positive that the pitch that would light James Earl up would be quite lower than the frequency that would feel the most comfortable for Celine. When I offer toning circles with large groups of people, I make sure that everyone present knows that it is not important that they are nailing the pitch exactly as I am toning it. What is most important is that we allow ourselves to be as open in the toning experience as we can be in this present moment. It is not a perfectly manifest sound or tone that is essential, but rather the tone or presence of our awareness as the tone is birthing through us that matters. So let go of perfection and open yourself up to presence. Allow this awareness of the power of vocal toning to be the base of your experience when beginning your practice. Again, it is not about the clearly defined meaning of the words or sounds so much as it is about being open to the direct experience of the pure vibration itself.

Toning For The First Time To begin, sit, stand or lie flat in a comfortable, balanced position. Close your eyes and spend a few moments reintegrating within the present moment. Take three deep cleansing breaths. Breathe in through your nose, hold it in your lungs for a few moments, and then exhale fully through your mouth. Visualize yourself breathing in the hayye or chi – the vital life essence – and hold that energy in your body temple for a few moments and then exhale, releasing all thoughts, concerns and mental patterns. Time to … AWAKEN Our world is continually becoming faster, which could be a prelude to the disappearance of time. Or perhaps, we are finally reaching the end of the polarity, so that more of us can recognize how to focus on the ‘now’. It may mean we have gotten so caught up in the illusion that time is all that is seen. The passage of time becomes the only mile marker for existing. This commodity has evolved from being a tool that we used to being one that controls us. People have allowed it to become the master in order to avoid having to focus upon memories and feelings of pain, loss, or regret. However, when we give up those experiences, we also barter away the full experiences of joy, love, fullness, and forgiveness. All experiences are a part of our makeup, our celebration of life. With ever growing technologies, internet conveniences and the never ending creations of material creature comfort, the thoughts around success have been gravely misconstrued. In addition, the ‘do’ society mentality lends primary importance to what can be accomplished in the shortest amount of time with the greatest monetary result. Quality tends to be forsaken for quantity, people are replaced by the ease of automation, waste is blindly disregarded for what is new, and necessities take the back seat to extravagant wants. Success becomes viewed as the material possessions acquired, status attained, celebrity garnered, or number of zeros following the number on the check. Is that true success? Is it success to you? For some, that would be the definition. For many individuals around the world, particularly in developed nations, success equals achievement, money, the ability to acquire particular things, and a certain amount of notoriety in one’s arena. Exactly what hole are we trying to fill by having all of these things? Does the hole ever fill? Is it ever enough or does it create more emptiness? The average person’s pursuit of success, if someone really wants to get to the heart of it, is a cry for what feels ultimately missing, the connection to others…the connection to Source…an experience of being at Oneness with Truth. It is also an attempt to place value on oneself or one’s life; a measure of worth. At some point, in some incarnation, the realization that nothing on the outside will fill the void comes to awareness. Either way, no choice is right or wrong, it just is part of the human experience to be lived, witnessed, and reviewed. As one continues their schooling in the field of evolution, the soul gently guides the human being to higher consciousness. 36

Open Your Eyes Various sacred texts speak against the worship of false idols. However, few realize that idols are not only in the form of people or ‘gods’, but can be the things that individual attention becomes focused on. False idols can be represented by those very things we say we cannot live without: certain people, a particular job, projects, a home, a pair of sneakers, a particular food, that glass of wine, time… Anything utilized in excess or that allows stress or anxiety at the thought of no longer existing has become a false idol. We can become our own false idols within the addiction to certain personality traits, habits, patterns, and belief systems. What or who are your false idols? Could you step away from every single thing in your life and not look back? Do you mean it? Can you or have you walked away from your ‘story’ of the past or is it a false idol that you carry? This does not mean you would not care for those people or things that you walked away from. It would mean that you know that you are stronger than the association with those people or things. This also reflects a healthy relationship and not one of co-dependence. When an individual allows something outside of themselves to rule their life, or at least control a major part of it, that item has become their ‘god’, a false idol. If any one thing is withholding quality experiences for an individual in other life arenas, then that experience is depleting the essence of the individual. If some ‘one’ or some ‘thing’ holds greater importance than the care, love and presence with oneself, then false idols are being worshipped. Allow yourself to marinate in what has been written so far. What feelings does it stir within you? Does the writing trigger you? Does it feel selfish when considering family, friends, and community? Are you getting the gist of the conversation? This has all been stated merely to support you to the next command over your experience. The human perspective sees through a small set of eyes. Our higher self sees through the all-knowing eye and stands in the gap for our growth, healing, awareness, and evolution.
