Citizenfour Media Of Citizen Participation In Transport Facility Project : Transportation Instructor : Jai-Hui Day Year : 2014.7 - 2015.6

Issue Through transport facilities, media and people, the combination generates the flow of information and media context. At present, the development of new media bases on the Internet. People establish a multidimensional view. For the fourth right, the media’s supervision of government transforms into people, and this situation could call “the fifth right.”

Concept

Transport facility and media space generate the flow of information. As an active architecture, it participates in the life of people. The field of the space creates the instant gradient citizen forum. The facade shows the status of the internal program and affects the external environment.

Unity In Fragmentation Complexity And Contradiction Between The Inside And Outside Of The Module Project : Co-Working Office Instructor : Eric Owen Moss Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan, ChengXi Hou, Swetha Arunkumar Year : 2018.9 - 2018.1

Concept Our project uses the grid, as a standard for changing the definition of the rule and explores variability in order, by way of investigating introverted and extroverted cubical prototypes. Using the elevation of the hill as our primary unit, we constructed program-specific prototypes that were then placed within a modular grid on the site and then bent to follow the curvature of the hill, aiming to create fluid and flexible spaces. We then studied combinations of these prototypes and the quality of spatial environments that result from the orientation of the combinations. Each combination is designed to work as a self-sustained unit, though connected to the overall scheme. The prototypes open up at the side facing the highway, bringing people in, to the public and retail zone. The more introverted office spaces line the edge of the hill, with carefully curated paths of visual and physical access.

Man Made Nature Topiaries Against Types Project : Mix-Used Flower Market Instructor : Elena Manferdini Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan, Andres Gandara Year : 2018.2 - 2018.5

Concept In the past, nature has been understood as a resource for energy and food production, a place of labor and commerce, a source of visual delight or insurmountable obstacles, a place for divine fear or artistic inspiration. The combination of fields of organized agriculture, extreme engineered ecologies, heroic irrigation systems, labyrinthine hedges, choreographed vistas and infinite horizons, are only a few of the classical images that come to mind when one thinks of the manifestation of the relationship between nature and humans. These images, like postcards, announce the importance of nature as a source of life or death, a place of danger or wealth and always imply in contrast the human heroic or simultaneously coward attempt to domesticate it. Nature cannot escape its intrinsic relationship with humans. Nature’s manifestations have been through a series of drastic cultural, political and technical changes in every historical movement. As a consequence, the relationship between nature and architecture itself needs to be constantly updated. In recent times we have been witnessing the consequences of global warming and water and air pollution. These events brought a higher global awareness of the importance of ecology and the production of alternative sources of clean energy and material recycling. As a reaction to this shift, architecture, like all the rest of the design fields, has been developing protocols and certifications to achieve a predictable and controlled methodology of good practice.

Field Life Region With Blur, Gradually Change And Adjust Through The Time And Space Project : Social Housing Instructor : Liang-Ying Chang Year : 2014.1 - 2014.4

Issue The lifestyle of Taiwanese exists a fuzzy line between the public and private areas, and the line has great elasticity, it could adjust according to the time and space. In its fuzzy gradient situation, its rich and diverse layers also emit a great vitality. Responding to the space of each household, we can see the illegal rooftop additions, the barred window, and the arcades.

Concept “Life region with blur, gradually change and adjust through the time and space, this design is mainly to explore the fuzzy boundaries and the fields. Through analyzing this type of architecture in Taiwan, I try to explore its essence. And this type of external form shaped from the internal field, meaning the internal existence affects the external representation.

Structural Character Utilize Structure To Create The Postural Effect As A Rebellion Of The Political Correctness Project : Public Park Instructor : Ramiro Diaz Granados Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan Year : 2019.5 - 2019.9

Concept The thesis aims to utilize the frame structure system as the prototype and personified it to create the postural effects and characteristics of human bodies. The transformation constructs an irregular park that provides a stage where comedy and tragedy co-exist. Most buildings in the city represent perfectness with straight angles and crisp edges. However, is that actually considering right, or should I say: perfect? As a rebellion to the common understanding of architecture by the general public and suspicious of the political correctness of the building and what the world thinks the building should look like, I start to ask myself some questions. Can a building look old or fat? Can an architecture look like bending over or leaning on others? Can an architecture look drunk? Therefore, I start to explore the topic by deforming perfect figures to represent a type of architecture with the resistance to perfectness.

This perspective is on the field part. One folly at the front left and the other one is at the back left so they create a void between them. The void makes people concentrate on the tree and ocean behind the follies.

47

The perspective is on the hill part. The folly on the left only shows part of it to enhance the other folly on the right. The folly on the right lift its legs to create an entrance for the public. The path is built by retaining wall with destroyed concrete and graffiti.

A Crime In Six Dimensions Time And Space Dynamic Changes Between Dream And Reality Project : The Correlation between Code and Graphic Instructor : Natasha Sandmeier Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan Year : 2019.1 - 2019.4

Concept This story is talking about a couple who steals business secrets by switching between different dimensions. The Film is described right after they stole it and escape. In the story, we will see that they will use some artifacts to influence the time and space to help them switch between dimensions. They use simple geometry as avatars to make it easier to switch. The girl uses a ball as her avatar, and she is mainly responsible for theft and delivery. The boy uses a cube as his avatar, and he is an assistant to help the girl escape. Through the story, I am trying to explore the definition of space in different dimensions. How will we redefine the relationship between time and space when dimensions collide? As the story keeps going, it produces a status in which the definition of space changes constantly. At last, dimensions distort, reorganize, constantly changing due to the external factors, the definition of space is in a status of dynamic changing. It becomes a space that disappears and regenerates at the same time. Moreover, when we talk about architecture, we will consider the transformation relationship of dimension in architecture. The architecture will be converted multiple times between dimensions through different mediums. In the process of transformation, the essence of architecture is also in a status of dynamic changing. In the interaction between dimensions, architecture becomes a status between dream and reality.

Semblances Soap Box Project : Library Instructor : Herwig Baumgartner Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan, Wei Ti Wang Year : 2017.9 - 2017.12

Concept This studio will interrogate the potential of the replica in architecture. Advancing recent debates regarding influence, affinity, and appropriation in architecture, we will adopt an approach that exploits the potential for architectural acts of appropriation to engender new forms of authenticity and to challenge context and type within an architectural project. Quotation as a postmodern form of referencing an ‘original’ and subsequent forays into sampling including kitbashing and the mash-up are various forms through which appropriation has surfaced in architectural discourse and practice. A more contemporary notion of the replica ties it to the status of the object in architecture and its inherent potential to engender multiple and coexisting forms of legibility; raising questions of scalability ranging from the colossus to the miniature. This approach involves the selection of copies (found objects) instead of the creation of originals.

Visual Studies II Dynamic Historical Memory Of The Code World Project : The Correlation between Code and Graphic Instructor : Ryan Tyler Martinez & Casey Reas Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan, Andres Gandara Year : 2018.2 - 2018.5

Concept The 2GBX Visual Studies seminar is the second VS in the first year of the M.Arch II program. It introduces Processing, a flexible software sketchbook and language for learning how to code within the context of the visual arts, and advanced 3D modeling in Zbrush and Autodesk Maya for the production of architectural representation through the development of digital techniques. Beginning with the fundamentals of Processing, the course will examine the notion of “Regularity and Random”, “Growth, Form, and Simulation”, and “Emergence” in both two and three dimensions. Students will be required to constantly work between code and output, gaining familiarity with the constraints and advantages of the software. Later in the semester students will work in teams of two and will be introduced to XGen, a geometry instancer that lets you populate the surface of polygon meshes with an arbitrary number of primitives either randomly or uniformly placed. XGen lets you quickly populate large-scale environments, including grass savannas, forests, rocky landscapes, and debris trails. As a final deliverable for the class, teams will work with other teams to create large pictorial landscapes using the combination of their output from Processing, spherical envelope volumes in Zbrush and XGen surface textures in Autodesk Maya.

Details, Details... Abstract Details That Have Not Completely Disappeared When Recognized By The World Project : Window Detail Study Instructor : Dwayne Oyler Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan, Juan Villarreal Year : 2018.9 - 2019.1

Concept Details can have a direct effect of blurring what is apparent, without completely disappearing. Per Edward Ford’s definition, this type of details can be referred to as an abstract, category that is composed of a series of unconfident components inside of a well-developed character. To place it into another perspective, if architecture is music, the abstract detail is the natural buzzing sounds made by instruments when played. When the abstract detail focuses to hide in order to not be recognized immediately, it creates a situation of liberation, the detail can perform without being dissected directly, opening possibilities on how to stretch what it can become in a larger context while generating a condition of dissonance. The articulation of the window detail revolves around the design of a curved surface that transforms into solid pieces and wireframe elements that travel into space in multiple directions at the same time, changing its section constantly. The solid parts act as walls and the wireframe components work as meshes for the windows behind them.

Animal House Creature And Robotic Prototyping Of An Organic Synthetic Artificial Habitat For a Species Project : Advanced Robotic Fabrication Instructor : Herwig Baumgartner Group Member : Wei-Tse Yuan, Asmaa Abu Assaf, Swetha Arunkumar, Gun Srisawat, Sara Alsubhi, Ruquia Akter Year : 2019.1 - 2019.4

Concept Little Brown Bats are considered endangered with a population loss of approximately 90%. This is partly because they choose to live in caves that are usually filled with moisture leading them to get WhiteNose Syndrome killing over one million brown bats since 2006. The disease is named for a distinctive fungal growth around the muzzles and on the wings of hibernating bats. It is caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, which colonizes the bat’s skin making them unable to breathe or fly. No obvious treatment or means of preventing transmission is known, and some species have declined more than 90% within five years of the disease reaching a site. The massing is used as a protection to keep predators from breaking into the enclosure easily; it is thickly layered, allowing little scope for brittleness or strain. Overlapping layers whose openings do not necessarily overlap would be ideal for this enclosure. Since the White Nose Syndrome is the major cause of bat deaths in the past five years, the enclosure should ideally be as watertight as possible, leaving little scope for moisture creep. To ensure that the bat does not get a leg or a wing stuck in the surface of the enclosure, the size of the openings should be minimal, but still allowing the required natural sunlight in. As an extra feature, the luminescence of the enclosure can help the bat attract prey since insects are attracted to bright light and color. We chose the Day Roost on a tree branch as our case for developing the enclosure. Day Roosts require ample sunlight but protection from predators since the bat stays there from dawn to dusk.
