We laughed and flirted but it was tame, it was sweet.”

CHARLES GRODIN
Remembering an Everyman Comic Actor and Writer HE PLAYED MANY exasperated businessmen and curmudgeonly fathers in a career that lasted more than six decades. Charles Grodin, the actor best known for his starring roles in The Heartbreak Kid and the Beethoven movies, died on May 18 at 86. The funnyman said he decided he could be in movies after developing a crush on Liz Taylor in 1951’s A Place in the Sun. “[Co-star Montgomery Clift] made acting look pretty easy — just a guy
talking,” said Charles, who made the deadpan roles he often played seem effortlessly natural, too. In one of his best films, 1988’s Midnight Run, he held his own against Robert De Niro. “Chuck was as good a person as he was an actor,” said the two-time Oscar winner in a statement. “Midnight Run was a great project to work on, and Chuck made it an even better one.” Beyond acting, Charles wrote plays and books and even hosted his own talk show in the 1990s.
“He had a charmed life, and he knew it,” says a friend. The actor is survived by his wife and two children.

The parents of two girls became engaged in 2019 but had to cancel their nuptials — scheduled for last November — due to COVID concerns. “You know what’s weird is you plan something and you had it all in stone and then everything got uprooted,” reveals Hoda, 56, whose sister Hala will be her maid of honor while cohost Jenna Bush Hager will be “best girl.” “Now we are planning it again!” The bride and groom have both been married before, so they want a fun, but low-key celebration. Hoda has chosen Van Morrison’s “Someone Like You” for their first married dance. “That is such a beautiful, beautiful song,” she says. “I think that will be our wedding song.” CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 5

n 2013, a lead statue created for the movie The Maltese Falcon sold for a whopping $4.1 million. Since the film’s 1941 debut, this 55-pound figure (one of only two full-weight Maltese Falcons in existence!) has become the world’s most recognizable and sought-after piece of movie memorabilia. First-time filmmaker John Huston’s story of P.I. Sam Spade’s search for this priceless relic remains a treasure for movie lovers, too. “It’s seen by many as the first-ever film noir,” notes Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. Unbelievably, Bogie wasn’t the first choice to play the weary San Francisco gumshoe. George Raft, Edward G. Robinson, Fred MacMurray and Henry Fonda were all considered first. “It elevated [Bogie] to an A-list star and enabled him to land Casablanca, which turned him into an icon,” says Mankiewicz. A SURPRISE HIT
The Maltese Falcon thrilled audiences at the box office and earned three Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Greenstreet. It also launched a legendary partnership between Bogie and Huston, who went on to make The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The African Queen together. “He was endowed with the greatest gift a man can have — talent,” said Huston of Bogie. “The whole world came to recognize it.”

Marriage Story
Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel of the same name, Lisey’s Story stars Oscarwinner Julianne Moore as a woman struggling to make sense of her life two years after
the death of her husband (Clive Owen). “One of the things that’s amazing about Stephen and his writing is that he’s able to explore human relationships but in a fantastical way,” says
Julianne. “Because there’s so much in [the story] — psychological horror, romance, mystery, a sciencefictionlike quality — sometimes I was, like, holy cow, what now?”

FOREVER YOUNG
WAYS TO SLOW LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST AS YOU GROW OLDER BY FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE, HEALTHY STEPS STOP SMOKING: One of the top ways to improve health
and longevity is to quit smoking, which can cause heart disease, lung disorders and cancer. One recent study showed that people who quit smoking between ages 35 and 44 gained about nine years and those who quit between ages 45-54 and 55-64 gained six and four years of life, respectively. Smoking also causes the skin to age prematurely and stains the teeth — not a youthful look! BE POSITIVE: “Health and illness are much more rooted
in our minds and in our hearts and how we experience ourselves in the world than [we can] even begin to understand,” says Dr. Jeffrey Rediger, assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. In fact, people with a positive view of aging have been shown to live seven years longer than those who don’t. EAT LESS: “One of the simplest techniques to
help slow the hands of time is to moderate your total daily food intake,” says Frank Lipman, MD. “Eat only until you’re about 80% full, and focus on organic or local produce, nuts, seeds, legumes and limited amounts of wild fish, organic poultry and pasture-raised meats.” CATCH SOME Zs: Getting a good night’s sleep
( 7 to 8 hours) slows the aging of the heart and blood vessels and promotes hydration. KEEP CALM: Stress increases the
production of cortisol which breaks down the skin’s collagen and elastin, resulting in wrinkles. Try relaxing with meditation or another calming practice like yoga or tai chi. For more tips, check out Dr. Frank Lipman’s The New Rules of Aging Well ($19; amazon .com). Lower stress with an online meditation course or yoga class.

NANCY WILSON
I Feel
FREE
The Heart rocker shares thoughts about motherhood, life lessons and her new solo work
Heart, which Nancy fronts with her sister, Ann, had nine Billboard Top 10 hits in the 1970s and ’80s.
I
t’s hard to believe that in a music career that has spanned nearly five decades, Nancy Wilson had never released a solo studio album — until now. The musician, best known for contributing her innovative guitar work, vocals and songwriting skills to the legendary rock band Heart, recently released the first studio album that’s all hers, You and Me. “I felt like it would be fun,” Nancy, 67, tells Closer. “I wasn’t nervous. It’s been a really freeing experience. I felt like I could really stretch out.” The performer also recently designed her own guitar, the Epiphone Nancy Wilson Fanatic guitar, which is available now. Just before the pandemic hit, she and her husband, Geoff Bywater, moved to Northern California to a home that provided her with more room to let her hair down and be creative. “I have a two-room apartment above the garage, separate from the actual house,” Nancy explains. “It’s my first-ever music space, where I can hang my guitars up on the wall. When I play, I can just turn it up and be as loud as I want without disturbing the other people in the house. It’s great!”
Nancy has been married to Fox TV executive Geoff Bywater since 2012.
Lee, Judy Garland and the Beatles. Our parents got hip to our music. We’d listen to the Beatles’ Abbey Road with them.
Does your new solo album, You and Me, have a message or theme? It’s pretty personal. The first song, “You and Me,” is kind of a conversation I had with my mom in a dream. When you have a close relationship with someone that you lose and they visit you in a dream or you feel like they are part of your DNA — that’s what the song is about. So, yeah, pretty darn personal. There is also a film coming out that features one of your songs. Yes, it’s called I Am All Girls, and it’s on Netflix. It features the song “Daughter,” which is on my album. It’s a true story of human trafficking and a really good film.
When did you first start playing guitar? I was around 9. And when the Beatles showed up, I said that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to be John Lennon.
Tell us about the instrument you recently designed, the Epiphone Nancy Wilson Fanatic guitar. It’s kind of based on the female shape, but it’s good for men and women alike to play. It’s a gorgeous rock ’n’ roll guitar, and it’s affordable. Also, when I played it on stage, it’s really loud. So it delivers.
Did you come from a musical family? Yeah, all the way around. My mom was a pianist, and we all sang harmonies together. We had opera on Sunday with pancakes. We had Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Peggy
You’ve succeeded as a guitarist in a field dominated by men. What advice would you give to other women with similar aspirations? I think that the key is to remain yourself, CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 47
HEART to heart and don’t let them talk you into being objectified. And just be competent. Learn the craft. Work at it. Work hard. You can’t be a wimp if you’re going to go on tour. It’s like joining the Army. You have to be diligent and watch your back. Do not be sucked into drama. Be above the drama.
If you hadn’t been a musician, what do you think you would have done? I would have gone insane! [Laughs] I probably could have been a vet because I am an animal person. A vet or a trainer, maybe. We have four dogs right now. It’s a little bit of a herd of buffalo sometimes! You have two young adult sons. Was it hard to be a mother and a touring musician? Yes! It’s been very hard. Once they started going to a structured school, I flew them out on breaks to where I was working to spend as many days together as possible. They would help the road crew, rolling cases around or putting things [in place]. They had their jobs on the road with me. Did either of them follow you into music? One of my twin boys, who are now 21, is a really good guitar player. He had a band right before the pandemic. My other son has switched his major to screenwriting, like his dad, Cameron Crowe (Jerry
Maguire). They are both very artistic, talented kids.
What is the best lesson you’ve learned? “It was a natural I think it’s how to be a mom. progression for us to start writing songs,” says Nancy. That’s the most challenging “My sister, Ann, and I put and the scariest thing to get together many fledgling right. Because you can’t be too bands before we got overprotective and you have to serious.” set boundaries. I think the more that you prove your love and support to them unconditionally — even when they screw it up really bad — then you end up catching them and being there for them. Do you have plans to tour with Heart again? It looks very likely that we’ll be able to get out there and do another big Heart tour in 2022. In the meantime, I’m doing my solo thing. What do you enjoy most about working with your sister, Ann, in Heart? I love the camaraderie. There’s something about musicians, everybody has the same reference points for humor — it’s Spinal Tap and various things. And with Ann, it’s always been a beautiful communication we have without words. We could always just read each other’s face. That’s the beauty of having a sister out there in the world to lean on.

MYSTERY WOMAN In 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Nancy has a quick cameo as a driver who catches Judge Reinhold’s eye at a red light.
BIG BREAK Heart released its debut, Dreamboat Annie, in 1975 and scored a hit with “Magic Man.” Other late ’70s favorites include “Barracuda” and “Straight On.”
“I’ve always got some lyrics or little guitar riffs for a new song that I’m jotting down.” —Nancy Wilson
Heart has had so many hits through the years. Do you have a favorite album? Well, there’s so many great songs on different ones that I would probably have to make a hybrid favorite Heart album. It would probably would be between Little Queen and Dog and Butterfly. There has been talk about a Heart biopic. Where does that stand? We’ve had meetings with Carrie Brownstein, who’s such a great writer. Her Portlandia is hysterical. Right now, we’re circling a potential green light on that, but we don’t know all the details yet. What other ambitions do you have for the future? I think I just want to keep making music because that is the most gratifying for me. I want to get back out there and have fun. —Louise A. Barile. MEMORY LANE GLENN FORD & RITA HAYWORTH
Inside Their 40-Year
LOVE AFFAIR
THE LEGENDARY STARS OF GILDA SHARED A SPECIAL BOND THAT HELD THEM TOGETHER UNTIL THE END
T
hey had met, by chance, before either was famous. But when Glenn Ford and Rita Hay worth were cast as two trouble-causing lovers in 1946’s Gilda, they fell in love and began a relationship that was more enduring than the passionate one they shared on-screen. That sizzling film noir earned Rita the title of “Hollywood’s Love Goddess.” But Glenn, who had appeared with Rita in 1940’s The Lady in Question, called her something else: the love of his life. Despite their mutual adoration, the celebrated duo never managed to make a traditional relationship work together. “They never married because either one or the other was married to someone else,” Peter Ford, Glenn’s only child and the author of Glenn Ford: A Life, tells Closer. But that didn’t really matter. “It was a relationship that lasted many, many decades.” Rita, who was born Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn, married five times, most famously to Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan, vocalist Dick Haymes and the legendary filmmaker Orson Welles, who was so taken with her beauty 50 June 7, 2021 CLOSER
that he vowed he was going to wed her before they even met. Meanwhile, Glenn, who was born in Canada but raised in Santa Monica, had four wives, including Peter’s mother, dancer Eleanor Powell and, later, soap actress Kathryn Hays. The list of famous women with whom he is said to have been involved reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Gene Tierney, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Marilyn Monroe and over a hundred more beauties supposedly succumbed to Glenn’s charms. “He was a bad boy,” Peter admits. “He got involved with a lot of the ladies he worked with. That’s not anything that I’m proud of, but that’s the reality.”
A LASTING LOVE
Through all the affairs, however, Glenn’s love for Rita never died, and his unflagging adoration showed itself in audacious ways. In 1960, he bought the lot next to the Beverly Hills home Rita shared with her last husband, screenwriter James Hill. The actress is believed to have tipped Glenn off to the property’s availability — and possibly her own! “That’s where he built his dream house,” Pe-
ter says. “The day afhouse and moved into it, she filed for divorce. The two of them were back together again. He inGlenn with stalled a little gate in his first wife, the back of his propEleanor erty so she could come Powell from her house over to his. She would spend a lot of time at my dad’s house sitting by the pool. They were constantly together.” Rita, quite publicly in 1972, called Glenn “the best neighbor a woman ever had.” It’s little surprise that although Glenn starred in many movies in his six-decade career, Peter says Gilda remained his father’s favorite. “It was the film that gave him stardom, and he used to say that any film with Rita Hayworth in it he liked doing.” In a 1990 documentary on Rita, Glenn admitted, “I loved her very deeply at that time.” That feeling never faded, even after Rita was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that became public in 1981. “Glenn, I know, helped her out in the later stages,” says Adrienne McLean, author of Being Rita
Rita was married to Orson Welles 1943 to 1947.
Identity, and Hollywood Stardom. When Rita died in 1987 of complications from the disease at age 68, Glenn was among the pallbearers who laid her to rest. “He was very protective of her,” McLean said. “They were allies.” As Rita declared to Glenn in Gilda, “There’s never been anybody but you and me.” —Frank DeCaro, with reporting by Katie Bruno
THEIR MOVIES TOGETHER “Every memory I have of her is beautiful,” said Glenn, with Rita in 1965’s The Money Trap.
1952’s Affair in Trinidad was Rita’s comeback film after four years away from Columbia Pictures.
“We didn’t do a lot of acting in Gilda,” Glenn said. “Rita and I cared for one another.”
They paired up again in 1948 for The Loves of Carmen.
COVER STORY MARY TYLER MOORE
A Life of
LAUGHTER, LOVE HEARTBREAK & T SHE NEVER LET TRAGEDY AND AFFLICTION STOP HER FROM EXPERIENCING JOY AND GRATITUDE
hree yea rs a fter spunky Mary Richards walked out of the WJMT V ne w sr o om for the last time on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the actress who played her gave a bravura performance as brittle, grieving mother Beth Jarrett in Ordinary People. The intense and deeply nuanced role earned Mary Tyler Moore an Oscar nomination. While inspiring, empowered Mary Richards will always be her most beloved creation, the actress probably could relate more to Beth’s heartbreak. The child of alcoholics, Mary survived two divorces and the accidental death of her only child and faced her own struggles with addiction. “Pain nourishes your courage,” said Mary, who was also predeceased by her two younger siblings under tragic circumstances. The star, who was born in New 52 June 7, 2021 CLOSER
York and moved west as a child, had a difficult relationship with her parents, George and Marjorie, because of their drinking. “When one’s mother is an alcoholic, and despite a child’s pleading with her to stop, she continues, you may read that as a cold, selfish act on her part,” Mary wrote in her best-selling 1996 memoir, After All. For a time, young Mary chose to live with an aunt instead of her mom and dad.
A NEW START
At 18, Mary married salesman Richard Meeker, and a year later gave birth to their son, Richie. But Mary’s blossoming career as a dancer and actress doomed the marriage. In 1961, the same year she was cast as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary and her husband split. Looking back, she felt guilty about the impact it might have had on her son. “By the time Richie was 5, I had already let him down.
When he needed me the most, I was busier and even more selfconcerned,” she confessed. In 1962, Mary wed Grant Tinker, an ad agency executive who would go on to found MTM Enterprises with her. The same year, she experienced a miscarriage, and a blood test revealed she was suffering from Type 1 diabetes. Mary started taking insulin injections — as many as three times a day — but despite the severity of her condition, she still drank alcohol. Like so many child r en of a lc oholics, Mary developed an unhealthy relationship with spirits, drinking every night starting at 6 and often

combining it with Valium. “I can recall with sickening clarity that on more than one occasion I played Russian roulette with my car,” she said. “What’s more, some unwary, innocent people played with me.” As her career took off with the debut of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970, Mary’s relationship with son Richie grew strained. The boy also didn’t get along with his stepfather. “Grant had the same expectations of children that he had for himself, leaving little room for failure. Richie was almost always falling short,” Mary said. In 1971, Richie moved to Northern California to live with his father and began his own battle with alcohol and drug abuse. Of course, The Mary T yler Moore Show brought Mary success beyond her wildest dreams. During its seven seasons, she won three Emmys, the love of a nation and the adoration of her co-stars. “Mar y was A merica’s sweetheart,” Gavin MacLeod, who played Murray Slaughter, tells Closer. “She was honest, hardworking, kind and thoughtful.” Ed Asner, best known as the show’s Lou Grant, agreed. “She was a delight,” he says. “It was a pleasure to go to work with her every day.” 54 June 7, 2021 CLOSER
Mary called her second husband Grant Tinker a “brilliant, driven” man. “I’m forever grateful for and proud of what we achieved together,” she said.
“Not one of us ever escapes without some pain.” —Mary Tyler Moore
But after The Mary Tyler Moore Show concluded its history-making run in 1977, Mary’s life weathered more brutal setbacks in quick succession. Her sister, Elizabeth, 21, died of a painkiller and alcohol overdose in 1978. Her marriage to Grant faltered, and in 1980, her son, Richie, 24, died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound that was ruled an accident. Mary never forgave herself or got over the loss. “Never,” she said. “It is a part of you as much as an appendage is always there.”
BACK FROM THE BRINK
In 1984, the divorced star checked herself into the Betty Ford Center. “Inside I was scared,” Mary admitted. “I knew I’d gone over an edge. I didn’t know what to grab for steadiness.” She came away willing to embrace sobriety and

with a deep admiration for the former first lady who helped bring alcoholism in women out of the shadows. “[Before Betty], many women felt that being a female alcoholic was a disgrace,” acknowledged Mary, who around the same time met Robert Levine, a doctor who would become her third husband. Sadly, there would be more heartbreak. In 1992, Mary helped her brother, Robert, who was dying of kidney cancer, attempt to commit suicide. (He survived, but died three months later.) Yet through all of her personal traumas, Mary never lost her spirit or her ability to keep going — much like Mary Richards. In the years before her death in 2017, she worked tirelessly on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to find a cure. “I know there is going to be one,” she said in 2002. “It’s just a question of how soon.” A longtime vegetarian, Mary also raised money to help animal causes. Although she experienced more tragedy than most, Mary insisted she felt blessed. “It’s been a wonderful life,” she said. “There are very few things I would go back and do differently.”

“I EVOKE STRONG RESPONSES from people. I always have,” Sharon Stone once revealed. But the self-proclaimed “middleclass girl from Pennsylvania” was still a late bloomer: She didn’t break into Hollywood’s elite until her 30s, or fulfill her dream to adopt until her 40s. And for the 63-year-old actress, it’s all still a little hard to believe. “I don’t think you ever think that you have made it,” shared Sharon, whose memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice, came out in March. “But it’s nice to know that I had at least made it this far.” 58 June 7, 2021 CLOSER

The style of singer Kelly Clarkson’s skirt really isn’t new at all. This throwback look first became popular in the 1840s when proper ladies wore layers of petticoats! By the time that actress Dorothy Gish donned a similar skirt at the end of the Roaring ’20s, the petticoats were gone, but the tiers of ruffles remained.
