Light study 1:Luminosity
Definition of luminosity: It means intrinsic brightness of a celestial object (as distinct from its apparent brightness diminished by distance, and also represent the intensity of brightness from light source or light source themselves in light studies. The meaning in Physics is rate of emission of radiation, visible or otherwise
Philosophical meanings: Light have plenty of positive meaning in human’s culture, like hope, warm and safety. For luminosity, it can be represented intensity of light and somebody which always help others---like doctors and pastors. There is a famous saying in the Bible: “God commanded, Let there be light.” A suitable luminosity is important for human’s development and luminosity can also be one of the standards of society. Moreover, luminosity can also be represented to a group which helped by one or more than one person, light is the way to connect them together and become people’s hope to the future. Page 10
In order to blend architecture and surrounding areas, Zaha Hadid analyzed city public transport patterns and change it into lighting pattern in architecture. At Strasbourg’s Hoenheim-Nord Terminus and Car Park, she turns white road marking into light lines which give people clear mention and special feeling. In 2005, Zaha Hadid started to combine brightness and darkness, in The Phaeno Science Centre, there are a large shadow area which can see sunlight in one side. In contrast point from early projects’s sharp edges, this architecture form a coherent exterior surface and combine sunlight and light together. Her projects started using opposite style to give people complex feelings, the light become a special kind of language which produced by small light spot and clear light lines. Meaning in Architecture: Light is one of the most important parts for architectures because people not only need light to help them when they work in dark places but also can bring them feelings of safety and comfortable. As the reason of this, luminosity’s quality and quantity will always be the central problem in architecture. Zaha Hadid have a new way to deal with tangible materials and her theories of fragmentation are also remarkable because of her imagination. Even though her advances of light usage in architecture are always be neglected, her projects still show her unique viewpoints: light reduce the gap between architecture and our perception, we sense architecture by the light was reflected instead of using eyes directly. Her first buildings---- The Vitra Fire Station shows explosive energy, the light lines between floors, walls and ceilings not only reinforce the linear architectures but also show their structures clearly in a special way. Accurate light lines sometimes create serious atmosphere but will be offset by the soft light around and inside buildings. Page 11
Idea: light is a discovery Idea 1 : Sherish The idea come from that"people will prefer things had lost or cannot get. People enter the big hall with enough sunlight, but when people walk ito the structure, sunlight decrease quinkly and become more valuable and sherished. There are less sunlight in the bottom of the little tower, but it will be increased with the increasing height. In the end , people own plenty of sunlight again and understand the importance of light.

Idea 2 : Suitable This idea is come from that" the best one is the most suitable one". In the 3 rooms, people will feel a kind of balance between brightness and darkness. First room have less sunlight, second room have plenty of them. As for the last room, there are some colored water between 2 glass roofs, the the sunlight won't as strong as second room which makes people know suitable is the best.

Idea 3 : Coexist As for idea3, it shows balance between darkest and brightness in another way. Only a proportation of sunlight can reach ground floor so sunlight seems valuable there. However, the whole roof is made by glass, there are full of sunlight on level 1 which seems sunlight is a normal thing there. As a reason, light is meaningless without darkness, it is important to keep balance between them.

light study 2: Refluction Meaning in architecture: Even Mies van der Rohe started to use other materials to change facades’ style in glass architecture modernism because many people have noticed the monotony of glass facades in a few years after. As the reason of this, people started to look for other elements which can bring architecture different meaning, light, the element which can change metal and glass into crystalline images become people’s new choose. During early 20 century, a design that made by colourful glass come out, and people had realized the importance of reflection and transparency. Moreover, the glass façade at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg by Herzog & de Meuron using curved glass to influence and change the whole perception of elements around which have huge differences with international styles. Due to the curved glass, some light lines and spots be reflected or refracted will be made up several special areas. These areas combine with elements, had created different glass culture. Fortunately, glass facades not only create special areas around buildings but also offer people inside buildings some special views. Additionally, the closing areas can also be protected by reflecting glass. These usages of light brought people many new ways to combine elements and create areas and there was increasing number of people started to focus on light usage on architectural design. In 1997, the American architect Frank Gehry transferred these arts of light from glass to metal. Those titanium board brought buildings special outlook which is changing continually by changing cloud and sunlight. The design not only updated his process, but also show people the importance and diversity of light reflection.
Definition of Reflection: It means the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it and serious thought or consideration. It can also represent the process that light reach an object then change its travel direction in light study. Philosophical meanings: Light not only bring people hope and safety, but also is one of the best way to connect with other people. Somebody use their light and warm to help other people, then create connection with the people they helped. Most of people be helped will give feedback to those luminosity as a special communication way. In these societies, nobody can live without any contact with others, work and live with a suitable group can increase work efficiency and life quality by helping each other.Help and get help, that is reflection。 Page 18

light study 3: Opacity Definition of Opacity: It means the quality of lacking transparency or translucence and the quality of being obscure in meaning. It can also represent the objects can only be passed a proportion of light even stop all the light and objects which hard to analyse by light in light study.
It is common knowledge that white is the central element in areas with high latitude because white’s high rate of reflection can against the local low brightness efficiently. White buildings not only offer the maximum brightness inside and outside but also combine landscape with snow covered. As for white architecture, they can be found in Denmark´s medieval churches, as the architect elucidated to Plummer: light is the central element in church. Those white walls and ceilings offer plenty of light which make inner brightness always higher than outside even in limited sunlight. In 1972, white diffusion----using white plaster, white steel and white linoleum to build buildings, reached a peak. Even the white shades and expressive daylight spoon are not the only feature of local architecture, these white elements still make up their own culture of architecture
Philosophical meanings: Light represent the help which can bring safety and hope to people, however, different people probably have different choose when they get help from others: some of them might pass the light----try to help more people after they get help, but some of them may have the help all to themselves. These “opacity” might be bothered by other people or be labeled selfish. They just like a black hole in group, lonely, get the help that others cannot and do the work that others cannot do, and also mentioned luminosity: different people need different help.
The extreme changes in weather and daylight have led to unique light situations in Scandinavia, where architects have played with white surfaces to counterbalance the long and dark winter days. The low position of the sun in northern regions creates long shadows and therefore daylight enters the buildings more from the side than from above. In contrast, summer evenings emanate a diffuse light. In his book “Nordic light: Modern Scandinavian Architecture,” Henry Plummer points out that although Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland are dissimilar in topography and vegetation, they share the same subdued light
Page 26
Religious buildings especially show the connection between light and time, some churches make strong light come through at noon to make the atmosphere more powerful but some churches choose only create soft light to show the importance of contemplation and make room more suitable to meditate. Light, always be the central element in church
Meaning in architecture: Some great buildings that developed by Scandinavian countries can resonance with light whenever in summer or winter’s light with low brightness. Scandinavia’s special light situation was produced by the extreme weather changing. Because of the high latitude, most light will enter building by go through side wall with low brightness, so large proportion of local buildings will use white outlook to balance the long night. As for reflection of glass facades, these light are much more soft which create and easygoing atmosphere. Page 27

After people finishing getting knowledge from samll library or having conversation with other people, the will reach the bottom of tower----the darkest place in this structure. Only a small proportion of sun light will reach tower bottom from glass pipeline in the middle and people may remembere the warm, confortable light in their daily life.

light study 4: Filtration Philosophical meanings: In general, light can bring hope and safety, but light also have different kinds, only suitable light can help people directly. People who help others just like luminosity, like doctor and pastor, however, as for a hungry person, doctor cannot help him/her efficiently. As the reason of these, filtration’s importance increased persistently during reflection. Finding suitable help not only increase work efficiency but also make up a more suitable group for people. Moreover, filtration can also avoid to help people which are worth to help like gluttonous and lazy people to save helping resources which can help more people. Filtration is one of the best ways to increase efficiency.
Definition of Filtration: It means the action or process of filtering something, let mixture pass something to divide them into to parts( let gas and liquid pass and leave solid). It can also represent stop or revise the light with different colour or travel direction, only let regular light pass in light study.
Page 34
Meanings in architecture: Le Corbusier made some special orientation, opening and texture to make contemplative places were full of light lines. This design was popular because people linked light to hope and divinity, each church style all have their own light culture, like the brightness of back chamber in Roma style, the golden light of of Byzantine mosaics and the colourful glass in Gothic churches. As an artist and an architect, Le Corbusier showed his special thinking in colour and light in religious buildings, and these buildings interested Henry Plummer: light is not religious persuasion’s tool any more, this element became a quiet power which draw people’s attention to sky and other miracles.
After light become an special element in architecture, some buildings’ usage and outlook changed much because light can create room with same usage but different quality and style. Some bright and shaped light lines and spots can create serious and formal areas, and soft light can also make the atmosphere more quiet and warm which is more suitable to study and work. Moreover, light can also offer building better outlook, like churches, different from repetitive windows and posts, due to light intensity and buildings’ transparency, similar structure also have different outlook. The flowing of light intensity make up a song that bring people special experiences. Similarly, some churches will make use of time to help light update buildings, the light lines and spots can change their shape and location with time passing, and finally reach the condition that people want. Filtration, one of the most important part of light usage that can change light’s condition to the one we want, create architecture’s soul. Page 35
