PRESENTATION
I've made up my mind to be a landscape architect since I was in senior high school.
Jiangyan Shou Landscape architect TEL: +44 ********** DoB: 24th Sept. 1995 Language: English, Chinese Email: jiangyan1shou@gmail.com
I spent my childhood in the countryside and moved to the city during high school, the contrast between nature and urban had a huge impact on me. I'm so interested in the complex of human, nature, city and their interaction, which led me to this career. 4-year studying in China, half-year studying in Taiwan, 1-year working with senior landscape architects and 1-year studying in Sheffield gives me a wonderful experience in this career. I have become proficient in site analysis, landscape design. As well, I have developed a strong skillset in software, artistic expression. I've had experience working in teams in the UK and have been engaged in practical projects.

Ecology & Biodiversity From the study of the density of trees and protected areas such as Ecclesall woods, it is clear that the Sheaf basin has a robust green network. These green areas improve the liveability of these neighbourhoods while providing a variety of habitat types for important species such as the Eurasian Otter, Mountain hare, and the Hedgehog.

A review of the various policy guidelines set by the Sheffield City Council shows that the top of the catchment falls under the category of “Special Areas of Conservation. Housing is not permitted in these areas. A study of the data consisting of ancient woodlands and tree preservation orders shows that the trees are scattered across the basin, with some pockets of high density which could potentially be connected to the existing green network. This may also provide an opportunity to create a matrix of biodiverse micro-habitats by increasing the density of trees and understory. It is also noted, however, that the land downstream, closest to the inner city lacks significant tree cover. This may contribute to the runoff of polluted water, and may necessitate green-blue interventions as part of the strategy.

The map along the left shows different geomorphological characteristics which can impact hydrology. Most of the tributaries within the site follow the slopes in the terrain towards the Sheaf River, which flows north into the Don. The steep slopes speed up the surface runoff and reduce the amount of water that infiltrates into the groundwater or evaporates. These are potentially a risk factor for flood events when compounded with impermeable land cover. The terrain within the site does limit the potential land uses of certain sections of the site. Particularly in areas with the steepest slopes, construction may not be suitable. Water control structures, comprising of weirs, sluices, and dams, are situated all along the Sheaf. Their objective is to slow down the water flow, preventing flooding at the junction of the Sheaf and the Don by retaining water upstream. The soil is predominantly Loam Clay, and does little to impact the drainage within the site. The Sand Loam and Loam dominant patches are opportunities for water retention areas, particularly when combined with a complementary land cover. The small map on the right outlines the areas most at risk for soil erosion, both by wind and water. It shows the combined effects of the terrain, water network, and soil type from the map on the left.

Woodland Suitability 1. Wherever provided, the new woodlands add to the existing blue-green infrastructure of the watershed. They function as pollution buffers, deterrants for soil erosion either through wind or water and most importantly, help reduce rate of stormwater runoff towards the Sheaf river. This will help reduce flooding in the Sheaf valley, and subsequently in the Don river valley as well. 2. Anthropocentric woodlands replace the existing big-box stores along the railway line and Abbeydale road. These are accessed using existing roads and pathways. Public access is increased by providing footbridges and green bridges that are open to pedestrian and cycle traffic. 3. Green bridges connect woodlands on either side of the railway line to create a continuous green network.

Site Plan Analysis
Housing Suitability (based on analyses done by my group mates) 1. The density of housing units is highest near the city center. 2. Brownfields and underutilised land are prioritised for new development. 3. Each new housing layout is either close to existing green spaces, or is supplemented by new woodlands and park developments. This ensures that all residents have access to nature within the city.

As it stands today, the site has no cohesion or identifiable characteristics as a “Place”. The major routes among the site limit any positive experiential continuity. The overarching strategy was to create a continuous human experience that grounds you in the place you inhabit by means of different tree typologies. We also increased dedicated pedestrian and cyclist routes, and included recurring elements. We used the collage below to experiment with creating varying degrees of enclosure through tree planting and found groves the most inspiring. The consistent mass of the canopy creates an identifiable sense of being “within”, when it opens up into a glade, the awareness of being tied to the earth is palpable, grounding you in place.

Granville Square Detailed Design The existing area of the square is the more active side of the site; it responds to the community of Sheffield College’s needs to the east, providing a safer and more engaging through-route and a skating bowl for people young and old to get active. The Trailhead across the (traffic calmed) road is intended as a more serene space, with a gradient of proxemic relationships moving east-west. The River Walk is a public amenity, a lively urban trail; moving west, you enter a more intimate grove with a central glade, where one could socialize while sitting on benches inspired by the meandering river. Moving closer to the buildings, slightly obscured by vibrant thickets, are more claimable “mine” places: garden boxes for residents, outdoor seating for cafes and restaurants, and flexible patios for temporary markets and exhibitions.

SĂŁo Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, the roads extend in all directions. The site GEAGESP Market is located in SĂŁo Paulo's Metropolitan Region, which has had decades of history. With the development of the city, it will be dismantled so as to increase about 640,000 square meters of space for city construction. The government hopes to develop a multifunctional area, so as to share the pressure of the economic center in the south. The multifunctional communities can fully meet the needs of the government and social life, traffics in order are the necessary link between the communities. As time goes by, the new city will always attract people and business.
