Welcome to Our Term 4, 2017 Course Guide Well “spring” has sprung and with it comes thoughts of cleaning and gardening activities. But don’t forget to take some time out to do something relaxing and new too! If you’re like me and always wanting to try some new activity or hobby but don’t know where to start, then our 4th Term Course Guide and the 2017 Seniors’ Festival coming up in October might just have the answer.

The program for the Seniors Festival this year has been especially designed to give seniors in the region the opportunity to try a wide range of activities - from Soft Tennis to Cuppa and Craft, and from

technology to cooking. - at little or no cost and you don’t have to be a senior to join in Here at Haddon, we’ll be hosting “Delicious, Nutritious Meals for One

 

or Two”. So many recipes in the popular magazines or cooking shows are for serves or 4 to eight making it difficult for couples or singles to eat well without waste. So come along and learn cooking tips, recipes and storage techniques to save you time and money. We will also be hosting a cooking demonstration that focuses on “Old Time Favourites. Recipes,” tips and a two-course meal is included for only $5 per person. Yoga has always been a popular activity in this area so we will be hosting a free “Beginners Purna Yoga” class to introduce people to this slow, relaxing form of yoga that concentrates stretching and strengthening. Bookings are essential for all these Seniors Festival events so please see page 7 of the Herald for full details. And speaking of yoga, I am delighted to be able to welcome a new

Yoga teacher to our ranks. Alana Rushton is a local who is a fully qualified teacher and she will be taking classes here on Wednesdays, starting October 11th. If you have done yoga in the past and would like to get back into it, or if you are a complete beginner, these classes will be ideal, so come along and support local talent. Alana has come up with a most competitive price - see the health and wellbeing section of this guide for details. This course is designed to assist people who may have a working knowledge of Office Microsoft Word packages but who need to expand upon their skills to gain paid work, volunteer positions, or who are conducting, or considering to run a small business. Learners will learn to design essential office documents and basic Photoshop procedures to enhance designs including “Simple Design Principles” of colour selection, shape and form selection; balance; space vs information; how to judge optimum font sizes; and especially suitable font styles. Pathways to further studies in the design principles of office materials such as the design of reports, forms and other essential required material in their current or new position. Learners can also pathway to other computer classes conducted at the Centre such as the Intel Learn Easy Steps Computers or other pre-accredited courses business courses with partnered RTOs. *FLEXI LEARN ESSENTIAL COMPUTERS This course is designed to provide flexibility with blended learning options. This means that it can be done partly, or all online in your own home when you want, or it can be undertaken partly in class and online or all in our class room. Topics include computer essentials, cloud applications such as "Dropbox," "Googledrive," Google Docs, Spreadsheets, Presentations and "Picasa" for editing images; useful for personal, business, marketing and social media platforms such as Facebook. This course allows flexibility to give time to cover topics where you may need extra help or that you specifically want to cover so give us a call to discuss! DAY: For in class training this course will be available on Mondays and Sundays - you can do online any time. You will be supported by an understanding and patient tutor either for either method. Special Programs We have two very special low cost introduction workshops on offer this term. Places are strictly limited for the Film and Sound session so you must book early. This is a more comprehensive Film and Sound course that followed on from last term. Don’t miss this great opportunity. *FIRST STEPS TO WORK IN VIDEO AND SOUND Are you interested in sound or film production? Would you like to work in these areas, move on to further study, or even start your own small business? If so, then one of these two options maybe what you require. Firstly we have a five-hour introductory video and sound production workshop on offer. And/or you could undertake a more comprehensive course to working with video and sound of 15 hours. These courses will introduce you to the process of how to create quality sound recordings and videos. Please note we are accepting enrolments on a first come-first served basis. *INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE & HORTICULTURE Learn basic principles of “Permaculture & Horticulture” with hands on learning. This full course provides you with work-related skills relevant to these sectors and leads into accredited Horticulture, or Agriculture certificate courses. It’s great for those who are returning to study as mature age students who may be thinking of undertaking further studies on this subject. The course focuses on giving students a hands-on experience in realistic work conditions and if you are looking for work in this industry you will learn of the employer expectations of day to day life on a farm. It covers the basic skills, knowledge and principles of animal husbandry - food, water, shelter, cleaning and sustainability and animal OHS. SUSTAINABLE FARMING ~ ONLINE The sustainable farming course provides the knowledge and skills to introduce sustainable farming techniques and methods to improve productivity of the land. The course runs for 10 weeks or over 20 hours plus individuals time for assignment work. It combines video tutorials, written texts, online journals, farm-based projects and group online discussions and covers topics including:

The impact of sustainability on farming practices;

How sustainability improves profit margins;

Integrated pest management;

Crop rotation, and

Accredited Certificate Short Courses ANAPHYLAXIS

This course is designed to provide the knowledge to identify Anaphylactic Shock and the skills to manage an emergency with the use of an adrenaline Auto-Injector. The use of risk assessment tools and the development of risk minimisation strategies are explored. This course is needed for those working in Children’s Services and Education. ASTHMA FIRST AID COURSES

Do you require upgrades or need to undergo first aid training for your job? Then we are conducting several courses in first aid at the centre this term. You can undertake all necessary training required in a one day session or undertake separately those sessions you need to update. Sessions available include:  CPR - 9 am to 11 am

This course covers all of the skills and knowledge required to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines. Accredited course fulfils the requirements for those needing this qualification for their workplace or for their role as a volunteer. Students successfully completing this training will receive the nationally recognised certificate. (In house courses can also be organised on request by your group if this date is not suitable).

FOOD HANDLERS ONLINE COURSE - START ANYTIME

You can alternatively do your certificate online and start anytime and also have the convenience of finishing it in your own time. This course can be done online or by correspondence delivered by the registered training organisation, “CFT International.” You print out your qualification certificate when you have completed all the modules required. Simply come into the centre and fill in the enrolment form and pay the fee. We will then email you a link to commence the course online. Cost online - $95.00.

Sewing & Patchwork Crochet

INTRODUCTION TO SEWING TECHNIQUES Learn to sew from the very beginning with the basics of sewing. You will get an understanding of the sewing machine, machine sewing techniques, troubleshooting problems. If you do not have a sewing machine, you will learn what out of one. Become familiar with the terminology, tools, patterns, fabric selection, cutting technique and achieving professional results. BEGINNERS CROCHET Following the revival of interest in knitting, exponents of the craft have become known as “Chicks with Sticks”. Now it’s the turn of crochet to take the spotlight, so welcome to the world of “Chooks with Hooks”! Crochet is easier and quicker than knitting. It’s fun and affordable (an excellent way to use up left-over yarn) and you can do it alone or with a group of friends. This program s designed to help you get started. It’s based on the classic granny square - a quick and easy way to learn. The course will cover:  how to hold the hook and yarn;  the main basic stitches and their abbreviations;  how to read patterns;  how to change colours in your work, and  how to join squares together to make a scarf or cushion. HADDON QUILTERS MONDAY NIGHTS This lovely group has been enjoying getting together and working on their projects. So come join in and learn basic sewing techniques and beyond. Suitable all age groups We have a course we can offer that was especially designed for seniors but would be perfect for all ages. We would be looking at a daytime class for you in easy patchwork/quilting. Barbara has taught students how to make lap quilts that need NO expensive batting, so this is very cost effective and easier to do than traditional techniques. Using two methods, one called, "Sew & Flip" the other called, “Quilt as You Go" (QAYG) you can make some fabulous quilts. Interested? Then give us a call and we will get a class organised. Let’s Create Arts & Crafts SURFACE TECHNIQUES POLYMER CLAY JEWELLERY Polymer clay is a fun, versatile and easy to use material. Create some beautiful, unique polymer clay beads working with surface techniques using chalk and acrylic paints. We will also look at various methods of finishing your polymer clay jewellery with sanding and polishing and using liquid polymer. Please bring: an apron fine, medium and course sanding block, small bowl or container large enough to place the sanding block in. Baby wipes. Small size artists fan brush. DATE: DAY: TIME: FEES

CALLIGRAPHY Calligraphy comes from the Greek for “beautiful writing”. Scientific research has found that writing skills are linked to the building of vital neural pathways associated with language and ideas. So knowing how to draw letters can help to build brainpower! And this course is designed to introduce beginners to the art of the written word, help them to improve their handwriting, or produce art work and written documents for special occasions. The course will cover:  the two basic calligraphy styles – italic and uncial;  how to use pen and ink to create simple decorations and borders, and  simple layout exercises so your writing looks good on the page. CHARCUTERIE COMES TO HADDON Are you interested in making traditional homemade salamis and other cured meats? Then you will love this workshop! Come join with James, an experienced butcher in this three hour course who will teach you how to make pancetta and a mild salami that will suit the whole family. SPEED BAKING – YEAST-FREE BREAD WORKSHOP Never run out of bread again after you’ve completed this hands-on workshop. You’ll learn how to make two quick, easy, and delicious bread recipes - a versatile soda bread and a nutty fruit loaf. Both recipes are yeast-free. One needs no kneading at all and the other about a minute only. Both loaves keep well and toast beautifully. They also freeze well so you can build up a good supply of bread to keep on hand for those unexpected visitors. All you need to bring are two of your own loaf tins, a large mixing bowl and an apron please. All the other ingredients are included in the cost of the course. This workshop will be held in the kitchen at Haddon Community Learning Centre so the number of participants is strictly limited to 5. Library The Community Learning Centre has a library of pre loved books, videos and DVD’s available to borrow or swap. Take some, leave some, or relax and have a read, while enjoying a coffee in the lounge area. We also have a collection of LARGE PRINT, and TALKING books, for those who are vision impaired or just prefer this type of book. Donations of good quality books and magazines are always gratefully accepted. Please note we are unable to accept educational texts or instruction manuals.
