PROFILE ~ MARITA REYNOLDS, ARTIST Marita

Reynolds has been studying art

since 2001 to 2014 with Janet Matthews’s wildlife pencil artist and exhibiting since 2010. Having recently moved to Golden Plains Shire in the Western District of Victoria, Marita has been fortunate enough to be enjoy more time to spend on her art. Marita’s artwork is a combination of pencil and pastel, with wildlife and nature the subject focus. Marita’s fascination with the natural world comes from her heart. She feels a sense of excitement when observing a particular animal that she believes we can learn a lot from them or when she gives herself some valuable time out to sit and contemplate nature. Marita has always enjoyed being creative and has experimented with many mediums over the years, however her passion and joy always relate back to graphite and coloured pencil. Marita uses Faber Castell Polychromos pencils and Derwent Artists pencils in both colour and graphite. She works on 100% cotton paper (Saunders HP smooth 300gsm) with a smooth surface. Recently she has been working with pastels and prefers to use Schminke pastels - she loves the way they flow over the paper, which is colour fix pastel paper 340gsm or Mi Teintes paper 160 gsm. Using either pencil or pastel, Marita is able to capture different look and 'feel', relevant to enhancing the appeal she finds in each subject. Marita has exhibited and participated in the following: Janet Matthews Studio Exhibitions 10,2011,2012,2013,2014, Burrinja cultural centre in Upwey, Solo art exhibition September 2014, Golden Plains Art Trail 2016,2017 exhibiting and demonstrating at Marie Perrymans’ Studio and will also be in attendance in 2018. “Let’s Make Art ‘Workshops as a tutor in the Golden Plains. LMA are all about giving art a go. Using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils and working with a wild life image, Marita takes participants through the coloured pencil process to help them produce a life like image. The workshops about exploring the creative process while having fun at the same time. The Pairing Project, in May 2016. A Golden Plains Inc. initiative, where artists of different mediums, pair together to produce a piece of art work .At the Sally Walker gallery in Geelong and the pairing Project plus at the Fairbanks eye gallery in Ballarat, in November 2016. Marita is a member of the following groups: - GP arts Incorporated, Bannockburn and District art group, Angelsea Art House and The Bop Art .

PROFILE ~ LYN DICKSON, ARTIST As a child I loved to draw and make articles and have always received encouragement from my parents and teachers. I have continued my interest in art, attending many and varied workshops to learn new techniques and develop my skills. Apart from this I have no formal training but by combining ideas and the skills I have gained I feel I have developed an individual style. I have been the fortunate recipient of several awards for handmade books and textile art. I create for enjoyment and the pleasure of trying new things, challenging myself to step outside the box. I enjoy working with paper and textiles. - Lyn Dickson

Interior Decorating Workshops! Haddon Community Learning Centre is proud to introduce Sharon Arthur from Red Berry Interiors. Sharon is very proud to be conducting new “Interior Decorating for Beginners” workshops and extended courses. Topics will include “Establishing your Style,” paint, flooring, space planning, window coverings, and lighting. All students will create a vision board of what they learn. It is a lot of fun, very interactive and each student will learn how to

transform their chosen room from their home. Red Berry Interiors is a Ballarat based Interior Design studio specialising in residential projects and property developments throughout Victoria. Sharon says that “this a fairly intensive beginners course offering real solutions which helps everyone achieve amazing results. We cover a very broad area of information and my current students keep signing up for the next one, so clearly they are enjoying it.” The shorter workshops are three hours and the longer course is sixteen in total. They should be lots of fun and very helpful if you have no idea where to start with a specific room in your house. There will be a second course on offer in Term 2 following the beginners and this will cover “Kitchens, Bathrooms” and other topics. See the centre pages for the HCLC Term 1 Course Guide for more details and dates. Call the centre on 5342 7050 to make your booking. We look forward to seeing you there! Remember to register your interest now as numbers will be limited.

The Golden Plains Arts Trail The Golden Plains Arts Trail will be held on the weekend of 25 and 26 March. Exhibiting over 60 artists and makers from across Golden Plains, with an expected audience of up to 2,500 visitors, the 2017 Arts Trail is all set to be the best one yet. Enjoy two full days of colourful art, fantastic food and wine and breathtaking views of Golden Plains, as artists open their homes, studios and hearts for a very special weekend of inspiration. The Golden Plains Arts Trail is an exciting collaboration between Golden Plains artists, Council, community and local businesses. HOW IT WORKS… The 2017 Arts Trail will offer two choices— the Red Trail covering the southern end of the Shire (Batesford, Bannockburn, Inverleigh, Teesdale, Wingeel, Maude and Meredith) and the Gold Trail (Haddon, Smythesdale, Smythes Creek, Linton and Corindhap). To find out which Trail might suit you best (we’d love you to do both), download the brochure from the website at https://www.artstrail.com.au or you can email arts@gplains.vic.gov.au to find out where you can pick up a hard copy. It is recommended that you plan ahead so that you can map out the venues you want to visit. PICK UP AN ORIGINAL PIECE OF ARTWORK FOR YOUR HOME The 2017 Arts Trail is a great opportunity to pick up original artwork that could add colour, style and flair to your home. The Trail will exhibit the work of of a variety of artists from Golden Plains, showcasing a dynamic mix of mediums. Art will be exhibited from various studios, creative places and venues across the Shire, with much of the artwork up for sale for visitors. Find out which artists are exhibiting on the Trail (and see samples of their work) https://www.artstrail.com.au.

SNAKES - SOME TIPS SNAKE-PROOF YOUR HOUSE AND GARDEN The Golden Plains Shire is known to have a high population of snakes, so the following list of snake catchers has been provided. Remember, it is against the law to kill snakes. Fortunately, there are professionals out there highly skilled in catching snakes. In the Ballarat area - Ballarat Wildlife Park – 5333 5933, J Farquhar – 0439 242 889, Ballarat Snake Catcher – 0408 308 648. Tips for around your garden and home: Cover all holes leading to houses and garages Snakes love crawling into spots such as roofs, underneath houses, garages etc. Make sure to keep doors closed and install screens on doors and windows. Mainland tiger snake Banyule Flats Reserve, Melbourne, Victoria, Block any holes in the ceiling and roof, which might house them. in threat pose with body flattened and head raised . Photo by Maintain a tidy garden Keep a tidy garden shed. Keep lawns low in height and garden beds away from Teneche - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https:// the exterior of the house. Ensure that woodpiles are neatly stacked to prevent commons.wikimedia.org/ snakes and rodents from sheltering in them. Discard lawn clipping and mulch rather than keeping it in a pile, as they provide warmth and security for snakes. Block cavities in wall structures Snakes LOVE rock walls. They love to sun themselves on them to warm up their cold blood and muscles and to shelter. They also provide places for food such as rodents and frogs. If you have a rock wall or other similar structure, block the holes and other cavities that slithering and scurrying creatures can hide in. Mice and rat bait Placing rodent bait around your house and garden will get rid of mice and rats – and therefore reduce the likelihood of snakes. PLEASE it is extremely important to place the bait in places where pets cannot get it, such as off the ground. Protecting birds Placing mesh or a similar covering around your chook pens, aviaries, etc will prevent snakes from preying on your birds. Dispose of food scraps Ensure that all food scraps are disposed of properly in covered bins. Food scraps encourage rats and mice – and therefore snakes! Minimise plants and shrubs Consider the type of shrubbery and trees you have growing in your garden. Low shrubs and leafy bushes will provide the perfect habitat for sheltering snakes. By growing tall trees and keeping leaf litter to a minimum, you will have less garden maintenance to do – and fewer snakes! What is the best pet to deter snakes? There is no pet that will keep snakes away. What does not work? Repelling oil and snake repeller Richie Gilbert a snake catcher in Queensland says that the snake repellers and oils sold by some manufacturers do not work to keep snakes from gardens and homes. He says that the snake repellers actually transmit a vibration every 30 seconds similar to that of a rodent – which snakes love to prey on. “‘I’ve been relocating snakes curled up next to them, passing by them and in houses that have been surrounded by them ever since the devices came on the market around 10 years ago. There is no factual evidence that they work but there is truckloads of evidence that they do not work. It’s a total scam and the companies selling them never back up their product or guarantee it.” Check this out and other articles at http://www.homelife.com.au/gardening. Also there is a pdf chart for common Victorian snakes: http://media.heraldsun.com.au/kids-news/pdf/SHS_SNAKES_POSTER_2016%20(1).pdf. 225g plain flour, 100g rice flour or ground rice 225g unsalted butter 100g caster sugar, pinch of salt, Sift the two flours (or flour and rice), sugar and salt, into a mixing bowl. Soften the butter slightly, cut it up and rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingers. When it starts to bind, gather it together with one hand into a ball. Knead it on a lightly floured board until it is a soft, smooth and pliable dough. Place a 20 cm / 8 inch flan ring on a greased baking tray and put in the dough. Press it out evenly with your knuckles to fit the ring. With the back of a knife, mark it into 6 or 8 triangles. Prick right through to the baking sheet with a fork in a neat pattern. Chill for at least 1 hour before baking to firm it up. Bake in the centre of a preheated cool oven at 150°C / 300°F / Gas Mark 2 for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until it is a pale biscuit colour but still soft. Remove from the oven and leave to cool and shrink before removing the ring, then dust lightly with caster sugar. When cold store in an airtight tin. 9

The next course starts on Wednesday March 7th and runs for three weeks. In 2018 we’ve added an extra day (to be agreed) where participants will be able to concentrate solely on getting an insight and some hands-on experience in what it takes to be a barista. The ability to use technology confidently and efficiently is a vital employment skills these days, as well as having become so important in communicating between family and friends. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by smartphones, iPads and technology generally, we can help, so check out our computer courses on page 13. An exciting new offering is a weekend of Sustainable Agriculture workshops on March 24th and 25th. If you have completed Horticulture and Permaculture course, this weekend will help you move to the next level. The workshops will teach you how to integrate three main objectives— a healthy environment, economic profitability, and social and economic equity—into your work. I’m also pleased to announce a special quilting workshop with guest tutor Yan Pring, the queen of colour herself. Over two days (April 23rd and 24th), Yan will help you design your own quilt to suit either king, queen, or single bed sizes, runners or tablecloths. We need 12 students for this workshop to proceed so please book early. And finally, I’d like to draw your attention to a special day in Term 2—not the start of the year by any means but I wanted to give plenty of advance notice so artistic readers can plan to attend. The pilot “Let’s Make Art “ workshops teaching coiling and pencil drawing proved so popular, I’m happy to announce that a full program of workshops is scheduled for May 2018. Marita Reynolds will be conducting another pencil drawing workshop, concentrating on drawing a realistic chook this time. The other three workshops will cover book making, paper making and watercolour painting—please see page 5 for more information about the workshops and page 4 for a profile of Marita and fellow workshop tutor Lyn Dickson. Mayor’s Message December, 2017 Dear Residents, My name is Helena Kirby and last month I was elected Mayor for Golden Plains. I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for placing their confidence in me and electing me to represent and serve the Golden Plains community as Mayor. Thank you Cr Des Phelan I would like to congratulate Cr Phelan on his five terms as Mayor of Golden Plains Shire Council in total, and overall for his contribution to Council and to Golden Plains over many years. On behalf of Council and the community I thank him for his efforts. As some of you may know, I live and work in Rokewood, operating a small business as well as now being on Council. Living in this smaller local community gives me the chance to hear direct from locals about a whole range of issues, including how well or otherwise Council is meeting their expectations. I do not forget that Golden Plains is made up of over 50 of these small communities, which deserve good service just as much as the larger towns. The year ahead 2018 holds many unknowns but we do know that as a Council. We have a four year Council Plan and strategies in place to meet our objectives. We want to focus on the big picture, we want to be innovative and sustainable We promise to consult and collaborate more with our community We will be courageous in our decision making - because we want to provide residents with a wonderful place to live and work With this plan, we will have to work hard as a team - a team with my fellow councillors and as a team with the organisation management - to combat the challenges that no doubt lie ahead – and to make the most of the opportunities that will also arise. Golden Plains Shire Council Leaders We bid long-standing CEO Rod Nicholls farewell as he retires this month after 23 years as CEO of our organisation and 47 years in the service of local government. His has been a long and distinguished career and we wish him all the very best for his retirement. And on that note we are very pleased to have appointed Eric Braslis as our new CEO. He brings enthusiasm and experience to the role and we look forward to working with him.

SEWING AND CAFÉ SKILLS COURSE AT HADDON COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE

SOME LATEST ACTIVITIES AT THE LEARNING CENTRE In the new Introduction to sewing class the girls made some lovely patchwork items including the gorgeous quilt. Above proudly displayed by Mary Tipping. Some of the girls had never sewn before so it was an amazing feat in just 3 weeks! So well done to you all. Some of the other items completed were a fantastic pair of pants, and girls dresses. Thanks so much to Barbara Austin for all the work she put in as tutor so the ladies could achieve so much in this class in such a short time. Our Café Skills class had a day of cooking some delicious goodies as part of their course that includes menu planning, presentation and customer service as well as barista skills. We all had a lovely afternoon tea to taste test these of course! Well done ladies. The Woady Herald is a FREE publication for the more than 11,000 people who live in the Woady Yaloak District.
