ANZAC DAY APRIL 25th 2018 The Dawn Service The Dawn Service observed on ANZAC Day has its origins in an operational routine, which is still observed by the Australian Army today. The half-light of dawn plays tricks with soldiers' eyes and from the earliest times the half-hour or so before dawn, with all its grey, misty shadows, became one of the most favoured times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were therefore woken up in the dark, before dawn, so that by the time the first dull grey light crept across the battlefield they were awake, alert and manning their weapons. This was, and still is, known as "Stand-to". It was also repeated at sunset. After the First World War, returned soldiers sought the comradeship they felt in those quiet, peaceful moments before dawn. With symbolic links to the dawn landing at Gallipoli, a dawn stand-to or dawn ceremony became a common form of ANZAC Day remembrance during the 1920s; the first official dawn service was held at the Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. Dawn services were originally very simple and followed the operational ritual; in many cases they were restricted to veterans only. The daytime ceremony was for families and other well-wishers, the dawn service was for old soldiers to remember and reflect among the comrades with whom they shared a special bond. Before dawn the gathered veterans would be ordered to "stand to" and two minutes of silence would follow. At the end of this time a lone bugler would play the "Last Post" and then concluded the service with "Reveille". In more recent times the general public has been encouraged to take part in dawn services, and services in Australian capital cities have seen some of the largest turnouts ever. Reflecting this change, the ceremonies have become more elaborate, incorporating hymns, readings, pipers and rifle volleys. Others, though, have retained the simple format of the dawn stand-to, familiar to so many soldiers. (Text courtesy The Australian War Memorial website www.awm.gov.au) ANZAC DAY Services - Haddon 11 am followed by light refreshments at the Haddon Community Learning Centre after the service. Some of the services held around Victoria are listed on the RSL Victoria website: http://www.rslvic.com.au/media/337422/Sub-Branch-ANZAC-Day-Activities-2018.pdf.

GOT
A PILE OF TYRES?
Term 2, 2018
BOOMERANG BAGS
Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is warning businesses and landholders of the hazards of keeping piles of waste tyres. Abandoned tyres form a breeding ground for vermin, tyres can decay and contaminate soil and groundwater, and a tyre fire generates toxic smoke and is difficult to extinguish. EPA regulations allow storage of waste tyres if you have a genuine use for them, but urges you to dispose of unused waste tyres in landfill or at a recycling facility. See www.epa.vic.gov.au for advice on what’s legal, and if you suspect someone is illegally stockpiling, dumping or burning old tyres, call EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).
‘Boomerang Bags’ a grassroots, community driven movement tackling plastic pollution at its source. Volunteers from all walks of life get together to make re-useable ‘boomerang bags’ using recycled materials, as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. The bags are given away to friends, family, colleagues, ‘bagless’ strangers and so on, as a plastic bag alternative that can be used and reused, or passed on to others in need.
KNOW WHAT
The bags create a platform to start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use – one community, needle and thread at a time!

FIREWOOD COLLECTION Firewood Collection Season starts 1 March With the Autumn Firewood Season about to start, it is important to remember that firewood can only be collected from designated domestic firewood collection areas. Last month, DELWP successfully prosecuted a Daylesford man caught illegally harvesting timber sourced from the Wombat State Forest. He was convicted on five offences under the Sustainable Forests (Timber) Act 2004, the Forests Act 1958, and the Land Conservation (Vehicle Control) Regulations 2006 and was fined $5,000 plus costs of $717.34. He was also fined $500 in relation to a CCTV camera he stole from the bush. While the Autumn collection season officially closes on 30 June, if there is a fire danger risk, the season may be shortened. Some firewood collection areas may also be subject to planned burning activity and closed at short notice. Maps of areas open for firewood collection will be available from https://www.ffm.vic.gov.au/firewood from 1 March. We encourage you to familiarise yourself with the Domestic Firewood Collection Rules same site) before heading out.

I love the sense of calm that yoga brings. As a busy wife and mum to two school boys, life is not always rainbows and sunflowers – but yoga can shut down a racing mind, and make you stop to look after yourself. I have always appreciated movement of the body, having danced in Calisthenics for 15 years in my youth, but after having kids and a media writing career, I was feeling stressed, and out of shape. Re-aligning with my exercise interests, I gained my 200h Purna Yoga Certificate with the Byron Yoga Centre, along with training in First Aid and CPR. Purna yoga is a Hatha style, but incorporates the whole you. It is about creating the best version of yourself through reflection, slow movement, stretching, toning and strengthening. The best bit, of course, is Savasana, those five minutes of blissful relaxation at the end of class – that’s what we work hard for. Namaste and see you on the mat! Xx Alana

Along the Rail Trail A short story by Jeanine It’s a glorious crisp day at the beginning of Spring. The sun finally has some warmth which is comforting on my back as I walk. The crunch of the gravel keeps me company as I wander along in a world of my own; although I have to be aware enough to dodge evidence of equine users of the trail that have preceded me. The world is not too far away but I may as well be in the middle of nowhere it is so quiet and tranquil. Proof that the cold wet winter is finally behind us is springing up everywhere through the undergrowth. Huge toadstools that had poked up through the blanket of pine needles in autumn are looking dull and brown; their glorious red faded with the winter. The bright yellow of wattles stands out against the green of the foliage around me and blossoms are starting to peek out of the buds that have kept them safe all through the winter. I round a bend and up ahead I see a mob of kangaroos grazing along the trail, oblivious to my approach. One of them eventually senses my presence and looks up and stares in my direction, its ears flicking back and forth. Suddenly it takes off which startles the rest of the mob and they all bound off after it. They don’t go too far though, and by the time I’ve reached where they were, they are just off the trail in the line of trees, watching as I go by. Dotted along the trail are benches and information plaques giving a bit of history about the trail but I don’t stop to read them, I’m too intent on just enjoying the day. I’m roused out of my reverie by the ding of a bell behind me. I turn and step to the side of the trail as a group of cyclists, also enjoying the sun, ride leisurely by. We exchange nods and good mornings then they are gone and I’m left to my own thoughts again. I come to a road, a reminder that civilisation is not far away, and cross. Ahead of me the trail has changed from being open and bright to dark and foreboding. The branches of huge conifers both sides of the trail meet and make a dark tunnel. The temperature drops discernibly with the sun unable to penetrate the canopy. As I walk along I think of all the dark scary forests in fairy tales and wonder what dangers may be lurking in the shadows. The mournful cooing of wood pigeons sounds like a voice asking who, who, who is encroaching in their domain. I hear a cry overhead and look up to see a flock of yellow tail black cockatoos, which have been feeding on the conifer cones, flying back and forward between the trees calling out to each other or admonishing me for my intrusion. I smile at their aerial display and tell them that I’m just passing through. A family of ducks sunning themselves on the bank of a dam in one of the properties that back onto the trail quack quietly at me. The sound of the breeze through the conifers reminds me of waves lazily washing up along the shore. I walk a little further and my peace is broken by a dog barking as it paces up and down along its run, guarding his precious charges of chickens. I don’t think I look like a fox; but you can’t be too sure. Sheep in the paddock look up at my approach. They are obviously used to people disturbing their peace and don’t run off in fright. As I’m almost past them one of them baas at me defiantly. When I’ve walked as far as I’m comfortable with, I turn around and retrace my steps. I could do the same walk next week and everything would be the same but at the same time it will all be so different along the rail trail.

PICNICS AT THE FALLS - A HISTORY OF THE LAK LAL RACECOURSE AND ITS RAILWAY A new book by Mark Gauchi and Michael Guiney The New Year’s Day races at the Lal Lal Falls Racecourse was for many years one of the most popular holiday events in the colony of Victoria. The picturesque falls nearby was the natural attraction and the race meeting at its peak during the late 1880s, drew in excess of 30,000 holidaymakers to this scenic and remote location. There was no other activity that found such a universal attraction – horse racing was indeed a community affair and it played an important role in bringing people together, especially in rural areas. The local races became a meeting place where friends and family could share a day out and so public holidays became synonymous with key picnic race meetings. The annual New Year’s Day meeting at Lal Lal Falls was a typical Australian holiday festival happily combining these national tastes for racing and picnicking. Built as part of the famous Railway Construction Act of 1884, the branch line railway that served this racecourse was at one stage said to be the most profitable in the colony. This is the story of how a fledgling race meeting became the Melbourne Cup of the country and the role the railway played in its popularity and success. It is also the story of how the racing club committee took their success and well-deserved reputation for granted which, when challenged by rival attractions, resulted in the gradual decline and demise of the racing club, their annual race meeting and the branch railway. Picnics at the Falls is the second in a series of new railway histories from Mark Cauchi and Michael Guiney combining serious railway research and relevant social and local history. It is a superbly written, definitive history of the Lal Lal Falls, the racecourse, and its branch line railway. The book, professionally designed, contains 88 pages of meticulously-researched history printed on 150 gsm Satin art paper and includes 64 black and white photos and diagrams. The full coloured cover is printed on 300 gsm satin stock, with a gloss cello sheen laminate. Copies of the book are available directly from the authors at the price of $48.00 plus $10.00 handling and shipping to locations within Australia. To purchase multiple copies, please enquire for a specific shipping price. If you would also like a copy of the authors’ first book in the series, The Bungaree Racecourse Railway, we are offering both books at the special package price of $62.00 plus $15.00 handling and shipping to locations within Australia. Orders can be placed by sending an email request or by contacting either of the authors by phone. All books will be mailed to purchasers by Registered Post. Term 2 Course Guide, 2018
Winner of Grampians Learn Local Legend Award
How to enrol We take enrolments Tuesday to Friday between 10 am and 4 pm.
Welcome to Our Term 2, 2018 Course Guide We are already a month into autumn and the weather seems to be cooling down at last. It’s a welcome time to draw breath and get ready for winter. With this in mind, we are delighted to offer a range of courses – both new and evergreen favourites – with the theme of “Healthy environment, healthy spirit, healthy body”. The dry summer has been an anxious one for many people in the region. If you belong to this group and are looking for ways to improve your own property as well as the local environment, we have a selection of workshops and courses that could help. As well as our consistently popular Introduction to Permaculture & Horticulture course, we are offering ‘Agri-Start’ - an Introduction to Agriculture. This course teaches practical skills and knowledge about the range of jobs available in the agricultural industry to enable students to specialise in an area that is of special interest, such as various animal breeding options or intensive fruit or vegetable production. On the personal health front, qualified Naturopath Cath Thomas can help people of any age to connect more deeply with nature through spiritual discourse based on scriptures and meditation. You can attend single sessions only, or book in for all three for a substantial discount. Arts and crafts are great activities for those shorter, wetter days and they have the added pleasure of an end result that is beautiful and useful. Everyone who attended the ‘Let’s Make Art Workshops’ last year had such a wonderful time that we are hosting them again in mid-May. This time, as well as ‘Coloured Pencil Drawing,’ local artists will be conducting sessions on Bookmaking, Watercolour and Papermaking. These workshops are so popular that we advise you to book in now. We are pleased to offer a ‘Paint-pouring Workshop’ for the first time this term. No artistic skill needed and all results are unique. But be warned—this is a very addictive art form! Also on offer are two new interior decorating courses with Sharon Arthur from ‘Red Berry Interior Design’ a three-hour workshop and a course of four weekly sessions. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at transforming your house but didn’t know where to start, these courses can help you. And Sharon is full of life and will inspire you to start. And last but not least, we are always looking for new tutors but many people are nervous about teaching because they have no experience in this area. If you are one of these people, our new ‘Let’s Train the Trainer’ course could be just the thing. It will give you the skills you need to be able to teach at our centre, or other centres by taking you through the steps needed to plan and design a basic, effective training course. Learn how to communicate effectively and gain techniques to be able to provide encouragement, coach and evaluate your learners and your own performance. We hope we will find something that you like and keep an eye out on FB for any updates and new classes added. See you soon!

Method: Preheat oven to 200°C or 180°C fan-forced. Grease six 1/2 cupcapacity ovenproof dishes or pudding moulds. Place chocolate and butter in a saucepan on low heat. Cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes, until smooth. Cool for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar for 4-5 minutes, until light and fluffy. Fold in plain and self-raising flours, cocoa and chocolate mixture. Spoon mixture into moulds, filling to 1cm below rims. Press one Easter egg into the centre of each mould. Bake for 1214 minutes, until firm around edges (cakes will still be soft in the centres). Invert cakes onto serving plates. Dust with extra cocoa and invert each cake onto serving plates. Mayor’s Message April 2018 In the wake of the fires in our neighbouring region over the weekend I would like to thank and acknowledge all emergency services personnel involved; especially those from our Shire. Assisting situations like fires, severe weather events and accidents is a huge effort and can be extremely dangerous, and your efforts are so appreciated. Our thoughts are with those affected. The Council Conversation Post at the CFA Thank You Day in Rokewood last Sunday was a great success, where five of us connected with more than 80 people over the course of a day. We as Councillors enjoyed it as it is another way we can connect, meet with and listen to residents from across the Shire. For those with pets, I’d like to remind you that the annual pet registration date of 10 April is fast approaching and to make sure your animal friends are registered. We are also running a “first in, best desexed’ campaign to try to promote responsible cat ownership and cat safety. (See the Golden Plains website for more information). Cr Helena Kirby - Mayor

Time to be a Super Hero – A Litter Superhero Grampians Central West Waste & Resource Recovery Group has developed an innovative new campaign that focusses on the continuing litter problem along our highways, roadsides, parks and reserves. Combining direct engagement with the public and through social media we are encouraging everyone to be a Litter Superhero! The target of our campaign is travellers along the Western Highway, key regional destinations and the local community. Key elements include: Direct engagement of travellers with a static Litter Superhero cut-out and social media frames, where people place their faces into a cut-out and take a photo and post them to social media Superhero facemasks to add an element of fun to the photo Litter Superhero cut-outs to be displayed at a range of venues such as Visitor Information Centres, libraries, Driver Reviver stops, to reach both local travellers and tourists Providing reusable car litter bags. These bags also promote the EPA Report Litter App and Hotline (1300 EPA VIC) Re-usable coffee cups Colouring-in sheets and puzzle pages for children Like and share our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/littersuperheroes/ with #bealittersuperhero
The Litter Superheroes display will be at the Haddon Community Learning Centre from the 2nd to 16th May.
Free giveaways
The display comprises 2 or 3 superhero cut-out figures that encourage people to “pledge” to avoid littering by taking their photo as a superhero and posting it on social media. To support this we have free giveaways including car litter bags and reusable coffee cups. COME IN AND TAKE YOUR PHOTO FREE COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK WORKSHOP ~ May 19th
We will be having a free workshop at the Centre conducted by Paul Lehmann from Grampians Central West WRRG. We plan on building a worm farm for the kinder but are open to other suggestions. Call us on 5342 7050
