A Project of the Haddon and District Community House
Celebrating the Northern Community Centre Saturday 4 May was a great day to celebrate the 10th birthday of the Northern Community Centre with our friends, colleagues and neighbours. In 2003, the Northern Community Centre was the first ‘hub’ model facility developed in Golden Plains. The plan to accommodate as many health and community services as possible at the same location was a great success as the purpose built Centre quickly became a hub of activity. The co-location of programs not only improves community access to all the services available but importantly also builds on community connectedness and inclusion. The impressive list of programs, activities and events that take place at the Centre is further evidence that the Centre is an important venue to the local community. It is through the strong partnerships built between Community House and Council with the tenants and agencies that
the Centre has continued to be such a success. The cooperation and commitment of all the groups has provided an opportunity to share learnings and expertise which benefits everyone involved.
Congratulations to all and happy birthday!

Work at the Haddon Racecourse Reserve The 25 ha Haddon Racecourse Reserve, located 1 kilometre west of Haddon township on Racecourse Road, is one of 50 parcels of Crown Land managed by the Ballarat Environment Network as ‘biodiversity’ reserves. Well known to local people, the reserve has a history of goldmining, today still retaining the large mining dam and remains of the large mullock heaps, portions of which were used in the construction of the Skipton railway line. The reserve has also has a history of being covered largely with gorse and other fearsome weeds such as spiny rush – horrible stuff to touch and excellent fox and rabbit harbour. More significantly, the reserve is a feeding site for brolgas and nesting site for the endangered striated field ren, so even in its dishevelled condition, the reserve has been and continue to be of environmental value. Since becoming the formal committee of management for the reserve in 2004, the Network has been occupied in turning around the physical appearance of the reserve, with the aim of returning its character to that of an open grassy woodland, in the process providing increased areas of habitat for native animal and bird species. The work undertaken has been concentrated around removing all of the very extensive gorse infestations, progressively removing the spiny rush infestations around and below the dam/wetland, ripping all rabbits warrens and following up with fumigating and baiting (Pindone) and collapsing any new burrows, baiting for foxes (1080) and replanting with indigenous plant species along boundaries, below the dam and on the mullock heaps. Fire management is an important part of reserve management, for both fuel reduction and environmental reasons. On Saturday 3rd May, the Haddon CFA brigade carried out a very effective and beneficial ecological-cum-fuel reduction burn. A build up of dead grass had occurred since grazing ceased several
years ago whilst fire helps to reinvigorate native grass species, so regular and quite frequent burning (i.e. an average of every 3 years) is beneficial all ‘round. With the reserve now in quite reasonable condition, the Network is keen to work more closely with adjoining landowners, Haddon residents and organizations such as the Haddon Primary School and Landcare Group to further enhance the reserve and to involve the local community in its care in general. The Network is planning to hold a community meeting at the Haddon Community House in the near future for any interested people to attend. Also, planting activities are planned for Saturday 27th July 2013 (the weekend of National Tree Day) and in August or September, dependent on suitable weather conditions (i.e. enough rain!). If anyone is interested in being involved with the care and management of the Haddon Racecourse Reserve, particularly if interested in attending the community meeting or the planting activities, please contact Network Executive Officer, Hedley Thomson MOBILE: 0428 027 895 EMAIL: hedleythomson@gmail.com.

Lions Club Welcome to another bulletin from the Haddon Lions Club. Since the last note our Club has been active with various ongoing projects including a considerable amount of work helping to clear up properties damaged in the Chepstowe fire. As a result of this we have obtained a large quantity of firewood from burnt trees and have recently delivered over 30 metres of wood to local customers. We are happy to report that one of our Charter Members and thus Club member for 28 years, Lion Bob Allison has been nominated to Lions International for Life Membership. This is a just reward for the huge amount of time and generous use of equipment that Lion Bob has given to the Club and other community organisations over a long period. Lion Bob will be personally presented with his award shortly.
handling regulations now in force. Mary and Greg will now be able to supervise the operation of all our food handling. While on this subject a sincere vote of thanks is due to Lion Ross Cheesman who recently completed some alterations to our portable BBQ making it much more user-friendly.
Our members again assisted with the Victorian Working Sheep Dog Trials held in April at Lion Daryle Kopke’s farm by catering for lunch etc over the two days of the trials which went very well (as did the tucker). Our members also helped organise the local Anzac Day Ceremony, supplying chairs and a public address system for the day, and also taking part in the ceremony. Shortly our members will also be assisting with traffic control at the Smythesdale Pony Club Gymkhana and in early June the Club will be hosting a District Cabinet Meeting at our Hall so there’s plenty on.
As a result of an invitation seven of our members recently attended a business meeting of our original sponsor club, Ballan Lions Club which is also the original club of our incoming President, Lion Cyril Ellis (C J to his friends). We observed with interest the way another Club goes about its affairs and at the conclusion of business Ballan laid on a superb supper. A reciprocal visit to Haddon is planned. Our Club also held a Dinner Meeting at the home of Tom Mulcahy where we enjoyed a nostalgic evening looking at a wonderful collection of historical farm memorabilia including photographs, trucks, tractors and farm implements. We want to give a big vote of thanks to the Mulcahys for their hospitality.
As the Club seems to be undertaking more and more barbecues etc. for various local organisations, events and businesses, two of our members, Lions Mary Nicholson and Greg Crick attended a special Food Handlers Course recently run at BRACE to allow the Club to comply with the strict food
Our Changeover Dinner Meeting this year will be held earlier than usual, on Tuesday, June 25 at the Scarsdale Hotel. No doubt all Lions have this date bookmarked so see you there! Next Business Meeting is Wednesday, June 12 at the Lions Hall. Report of business next month.

Winter in the Garden “Even five minutes outdoors can lift your spirits” It’s been proved by scientists that a spot of gardening, even on the coldest and greyest of days, will lift your spirits, and warm you up! Have you been out into you garden recently? I don’t mean the quick dash up the front path, but down the back? With the winter days being cold and grey and all the plants are looking a bit tattered and weather worn; it can be hard to muster enthusiasm for the garden. The cooler conditions mean you can take on some tasks that raise a sweat, such as laying a new path or digging a pond. If they sound a bit too hard, here are some quick winter jobs to get you outdoors and active.
Rake the leaves and pick up twigs, sticks and bark.
This is a winter job that can involve all the family and warms you as you work. Drifts of fallen leaves and bark, along with twigs and sticks, accumulate on lawns and paths over winter. Rake leaves, bark and small twigs for mulch or to add to the compost heap. Sticks needs to be broken up or use them instead to light indoor winter fires, for a family barbecue or as plant support. Woady Yaloak HERALD your local connection
Dig the vegie garden & plant new crops Provided your soil isn’t sodden, winter can be a great time to dig a new vegie or garden bed or to turn in green manure crops to get the garden ready for planting in spring. It’s also a good time to pull or hoe out weeds and cut back invasive plants. There’s still plenty of time to grow some tasty fresh vegetables in your garden. Plant snow peas, English spinach or some mini vegies, such as small-headed cabbage or cut-and-come-again lettuce.
Prune and tidy
While plants are bare you can more easily remove dead or crowded growth or spot invasive climbers and remove them. Don’t prune late winter or spring-flowering shrubs but do get stuck into roses and grapevines.
Cheer yourself with potted colour Plant up a couple of pots with annuals. Choose pansies or polyanthus that are already in flower for an instant show. Water well after planting and keep in bloom by deadheading and watering every 10 days with a liquid plant food. June 2013

Wala Wildlife Sanctuary News What has 16 tails, 16 mouths, hops around a lot and is cute as can be? Why, 16 orphaned joeys, of course!!
If you are travelling around the Lake Wendouree area at the moment and notice a lot of the small, black water birds walking on the side of the road or even across the road, PLEASE SLOW DOWN. Since the start of the year, we have had a huge amount of these water birds come into care simply because they have been hit by an impatient motorist. Luckily, we have been able to rehabilitate and release some of them. In fact, we released three of them today! Unfortunately, there has been a large number of deaths which could have been avoided if motorists gave them a chance to get off the road. SLOWING DOWN just means you get there a couple of minutes later AND the birds are safe! AND I am not having to look after them!!
“Any fool can know, the point is to understand...”
- Albert Einstein
The above photo is of me perfecting my skill of holding 6 bottles at a time while Quinella, Marble, Zoe, Kate, Jack and Becca impatiently line up for their afternoon milk! These joeys are just starting to go outside for afternoon playtime in their day yard! And if you look real close (ok, you may not really see but trust me) you might see Frank, the mischievous little wallaby, who insists on hitch hiking in someone else’s pouch and ends up outside for a play as well! Then, it’s back inside to feed 8 smaller mouths before heading out again to feed the last 2 joeys who have been with us for over 12 months and are getting ready for their release back to the wild. All of this, and feeding the other animals in care, which includes quite a lot of water birds at the moment AND an average of 3 rescues a day makes for a VERY busy time! And this is our quiet period, wait until Spring...........! We now have 17 joeys in care! Our latest baby came into care last night. He came from Mt Doran. Unfortunately his mother was caught in a fence and died, but luckily she was noticed and the property owners realised there was a little pink fellow wriggling in the pouch. Fortunately, they rang us straight away and he hadn’t had a chance to get cold, so all going well he will be with us until Spring next year! The photo on the left is Allegra. She was my Mother’s Day present! Her mother was hit by a car in Campbelltown and some kind passers by checked her pouch and found a tiny pink baby. Her eyes were still fused shut when she came into care and now I am pleased to report she has her eyes open and my bright purple hair was probably the first thing she saw!!
I will get back to my endless pouch washing and bottle cleaning but most of all those beautiful, soft, furry, trusting joey kisses....... Take care and we’ll continue caring! Kaz
A lot of animals only means a lot of fundraising as always! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
A unique opportunity has arisen for Wala Animal Sanctuary to raise much needed funds but we need your help! We are looking for some hardy volunteers to help us on Sunday 9th June (yes, it is the long weekend) to be flag marshals at Monza Park raceway. In return, Monza Park will donate $750 to Wala Animal Sanctuary. If you are able to give us a little of your time and would like to know the nitty gritty please email me mickeykaz@hotmail.com or ring 0409137323 We would really appreciate your help.
FUNDRAISING EVENTS COMING UP!
Our fundraising events are vital for us because we are completely voluntary and we get no financial assistance. Costs like veterinary bills, medication and specialised foods are what we can purchase after these events.
NESTING BOXES
The students at St Pats are running a program where they are making nesting boxes and selling them. The proceeds of the boxes buy the materials for the next lot of students to make....and so on! This program is run entirely by the students, and overseen by the teaching staff. They have the boxes available for $35. These boxes are ideal to place in any backyard to give all types of wildlife a place to nest, especially over these cold Winter months. If you would like to purchase a box or two, please let me know and I can arrange delivery for you. These are the perfect present for the person ‘who has everything’!
