DEREEL MEN’S SHED - BRINGS BENEFITS TO LOCAL RESIDENTS The Dereel Men’s Shed was officially opened by Sarah Henderson MP, Federal Member for Corangamite on Monday 5 September. It was completed in May. The project included purchase and construction of a pre-fabricated shed, concrete slab, electrical works and plumbing, and involved 591 hours of labour by 16 dedicated volunteers. The Dereel Men’s Shed has become a valuable community facility providing local residents (men and women) with opportunities to establish social networks, work on meaningful projects, learn new skills and contribute to their communities. The Shed is a $115,000, jointly funded project, with support (funding and/or in-kind contributions) from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development ‘Community Development Grants’ program the Department of Human Services ‘Strengthening Men’s Sheds’ program, Council, the Dereel Men’s Shed and the Dereel Bushfire Relief Fund. It will offer activities like wood and metal working, furniture restoration and community assistance. The Mayor, Cr Des Phelan, said the Men’s Shed provides a range of benefits for the local community, including providing opportunities for local businesses to partner and collaborate on special community projects. “Supporting healthy and happy communities is important to Council so we are really happy to have been involved with this fantastic project.” “Men’s Sheds have been proven to provide a huge benefit to the whole community and from the work already undertaken to get the project off the ground, I can already see benefits.” “The fact that there were so many contributors to this project is a testament to the teamwork and community effort involved.”

FANTASTIC FACILITIES FOR WOADY YALOAK Geoff Howard MP, Member for Buninyong, officially opened two important projects at the Woady Yaloak Recreation Reserve on Monday 29th August: being the BMX Upgrade and the new Female Change Facilities. Completed in March this year, the Female Change Facilities are a great and important addition to the Woady Yaloak Recreation Reserve. The $252,000 project was a joint funding effort by Sport and Recreation Victoria, contributing $70,000, and the Council contributing $182,000. The project involved the construction of female amenities, including change facilities, store room, viewing area and a kitchenette. Cr Des Phelan, Mayor of Golden Plains Shire Council, said it’s a great facility. “The new building provides women and girls who use the Recreation Reserve with a safe and comfortable space to change, which encourages greater participation in sport and recreation.” The Woady Yaloak BMX Upgrade included a complete rebuild of the existing track, and Cr Phelan said it’s a key upgrade for the community. The BMX Upgrade was a $61,000 project. This upgrade was a joint funding effort with Sport and Recreation Victoria, contributing $33,000 and the Council, contributing $28,000. “This new and improved outdoor facility was only recently completed, and is very important to the local BMX community and their families.” “Before the upgrade, the track was deteriorating and becoming more of a safety concern for the many BMX fans who used the space.” “On behalf of Council I would like to thank the State Government, for supporting these two projects – they might be smaller scale facilities in the grand scheme of things, but they enhance the Woady Yaloak Recreation Reserve significantly and make a difference to so many people.” - End GPS Media Release-

What is “Battery-Ready” Solar Power ? (Part 2) Last month I stated that Solar Power Systems with Batteries will become the Norm for Households connected to the Mains Grid; that this trend, which is starting now, will pick-up speed in 3 to 5 years as the price of Batteries falls; and that Householders installing Solar Power now rightly want their system to be “Battery Ready” but that those 2 Words do not always mean the same thing - the Devil is in the Detail !!! So it pays to ask what functionality you are actually getting from the Solar Equipment that you purchase. To explain, I will need to get technical. A typical Grid-Connect Solar Power System has 2 Major Components: the Solar Panels and one or more Grid-Connect Solar Inverters. What is a Grid-Connect Solar Inverter ? There are 2 Basic Grid-Connect Solar Inverter Technologies: String Inverters and MicroInverters. The pros and cons of these is a whole discussion in itself, but for our purposes here we can simply say that they both convert the Direct Current (DC) produced by the Solar Panels into the 240 Volts Alternating Current (AC) that is supplied by the Mains Grid for our typical Household Appliances. A typical “Grid-Connect” Solar Inverter is one that is designed to and required by safety regulations to act as a “Slave” of the Mains Grid and will shut itself down when the Mains Grid goes down providing No Backup. Adding Batteries to a Grid-Connect Solar Power System requires 2 more components: a Battery Inverter-Charger and an Import/ Export Meter. The Battery Inverter-Charger both charges the Batteries by converting AC from the Solar Inverter (or possibly the Mains Grid) to DC to charge the Batteries and takes DC from the Batteries converting it to 240 Volts AC. The Import/Export Meter tells the Battery Inverter-Charger when Solar Power is about to be exported so it can decide when to charge and discharge the Batteries. If I am already losing some Readers in the technicalities, they probably won’t want to hear that it gets more complicated because:

 The Battery Inverter-Charger can be: 

A Standalone/Off-Grid Product that is also capable of being connected to the Mains Grid, providing Full Backup when the Mains Grid is down and allowing you to go Completely Off-Grid.

An On-Grid Only Product that provides some Limited Backup when the Mains Grid is down.

An On-Grid Only Product that provides No Backup and shuts down when the Mains Grid is down.

A Grid-Connect Solar Inverter and a Battery Inverter-Charger can be packaged up in the same box – and referred to as a

“Hybrid” Inverter by the Solar Industry. I call it a “One Box Solution”. Conversely, a Grid-Connect Solar Inverter and a Battery Inverter-Charger can be in separate boxes – unsurprisingly, I call that a “Two Box Solution”. Over coming instalments, I will explain where each of these approaches is most appropriate and cost-effective … Cheers, Simon , BREAZE Energy Solutions (Please email and questions to simon@breaze.org.au) Kindly re published from the Meredith and District NEWS

SMYTHESDALE BUSINESS AND WELLBEING HUB UPGRADE PROJECT ~ continued from page 1 Works on the extension to the Smythesdale Well are completed and the official opening was held on Monday August. 22nd. Regional Development Victoria contributed $500,000 and the Golden Plains Shire allocated $478,000 to the project. The “Well” is a community hub which provides access to a general practitioner and pharmacy alongside other health services. “The Well, in addition to being an important resource to local people and local business, will also be ‘green’, with ten ecologically sustainable design initiatives,” Golden Plains Shire Mayor Des Phelan said. The facility upgrade has been designed to ensure local businesses will have office space co-located with the services and with access to the town square, providing high visibility and connection with the community. The professional services areas will provide a space for small business owners to hire an area on a regular basis or for ‘one off’ events. The extension has its own entrance and access to amenities to allow public access to limited parts of the facility after hours and on weekends.
