Woady Yaloak HERALD ~ Your Local Connection WHAT IS ADULT LEARNERS’ WEEK? Adult Learners’ Week in Australia is part of an international festival of adult learning. Each year, Adult Learners’ Week is celebrated with hundreds of events and activities designed to promote the benefits of learning – in the home, at work and in the community – and to highlight the many options available. Adult Learners’ Week also provides an opportunity for informed discussion about the current provision of adult learning in Australia and to consider what improvements are needed to take Australia forward. In Australia, Adult Learners’ Week is supported by the Department of Education and Training and is coordinated nationally by Adult Learning Australia. The first Australian ALW was organised in 1995 to promote and encourage lifelong learning. When UNESCO’s General Conference in November 1999 approved the International Adult Learners’ Week, a larger dimension came into being. The aim is to bridge the activities during the national adult learners’ weeks, to learn from the experiences of other countries, to share the celebration with people in other contexts and to amplify the cooperation between agencies active in the promotion of adult learning at international level. Since then, organisers in more than 40 countries (see below) have organised or are preparing learning festivals. These not only raise awareness of the need to create more opportunities for adults to learn, but celebrate the efforts and achievements of the thousands who find the courage to ‘take that first step back’. International Literacy Day and Adult Learners’ Week are used as mobilisation initiatives in many countries. They become a key element of national adult learning policies, promoting wider access to adult learning by celebrating individual and collective achievements, and using their experiences to stimulate a demand for learning elsewhere. Many of the most successful events take place in venues that adults find accessible, friendly, and familiar, such as cafes, bars, community centres, on public transport, sports grounds or village halls. The experiences of some other countries illustrate the different ‘festivals of learning’ now occurring. The International community of Adult Learners’ Week nations continues to grow. Check at your local centres for activities and events that you can participate in to celebrate Adult Learners Week. At the Haddon Community Learning Centre and Northern Community Centre we will have a couple of exciting opportunities for you to develop your skills and engage in a learning activity. Check for regular updates on Facebook or call us closer to the end of July on 5342 7050.

ALERT ~ PLEASE BEWARE OF SCAMMERS An issue that is causing some concern to the community are scammers calling residents stating that they represent the ‘Tax Office.’ These people call unsuspecting residents and demand payment of a debt that is owed to the Tax Department. They also follow up by saying that if the debt is not paid, the police will become involved and arrest them. These people are scammers and are working on the premise that you will be intimidated enough to send them money. Please be aware that this practice is illegal and although it may be confronting, people should ignore their demands and hang up. There have also been members of the community inform local police that these people left life threatening messages on their answering machines. Please delete these messages and if you are still concerned, then please feel free to contact your local police and report the incidents to them.

HADDON FLEXI LEARN COURSES OFFER PARTICIPANTS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS ~ ONLINE COURSE LAUNCH Haddon Community Learning Centre (HCLC) is set to break new ground with the introduction of Flexi Learn Online training. The Centre is now accepting bookings for a blended learning delivery of an “Essentials Computers” course scheduled and are also taking expressions of interest for a sustainable farming course planned to start in July. These courses combine self-paced learning at home with face-to-face and supported sessions. Both courses are specially designed for people who find it hard to attend learning programs during working hours or outside their local community. The “Essential Computers Online” course is designed specifically for people who want to learn about and gain more knowledge in use of their computers but find it hard to access training near their home or business or if they are working, While students can complete most of the training in the comfort of their own home, the centre will have scheduled three or four face-to-face sessions to assist them. The first session is designed to assist students get started and the remaining sessions are to provide the opportunity to talk over any challenging topics with an experienced tutor. These faceto-face classes can be held at a central location convenient for everyone taking part so long as internet access is available. The courses have been targeted especially for anyone who lives in the Golden Plains, Pyrenees and Central Highlands regions but anyone who wanted to learn more about computers or who are interested in undertaking a sustainable farming online course are very welcome to enrol. Essential Computers consists of eight lessons and focuses on helping people to work more efficiently together even remotely. The course will teach students how to find their way around Google Drive so they can use it to create, add and upload a file or folder, and share files so they can work together on projects. As well as learning how to work with files and folders, the course will focus on teaching students how to become comfortable with the latest online services and applications such as Dropbox, Google Docs and photo editing with Picasa. Google Docs is another important part of the course and participants will have the opportunity to learn how to use it to produce spreadsheets and presentations. Last but not least, participants will explore the photo editing software Picasa and use it to locate and edit photos, create their own collections and even use the program to create movies. On successful completion of these courses, students will receive a certificate of participation listing their achievements. “Essential Computers Online” costs only $65.00pp ($56.00 concession) and the centre encourages anyone interested in taking part to talk to the manger about the fees if they are a preventing you from undertaking the courses. The sustainable farming course runs for 10 weeks. This course provides the knowledge and skills to introduce sustainable farming techniques and methods to improve productivity of the land. It combines video tutorials, written texts, online journals, farm-based projects and group online discussions and covers topics including:  

  

the impact of sustainability on farming practices; how sustainability improves profit margins; integrated pest management; crop rotation, and how to improve soil quality on farms

The Sustainable Farming course costs $85.00 or $70.00 concession. When is a Solar Power System “Battery-Ready” ? (Part 1) I have described previously the fast-approaching future when most households will be All-Electric, with Solar Electricity Panels on the roof and an efficient Heat Pump Hot Water Service (HWS) or Roofmounted Solar Hot Water Collectors and an Electric Car in the Garage. Solar Panels are already at the right price; the missing piece of the puzzle is affordable Battery Storage. And it is crucial because while Solar Generation peaks at Lunchtime, demand for electricity peaks in most Households peaks at Dinnertime and we need to shift this peak of generation to meet the peak of consumption (hence the Solar Industry jargon for this practice - “Peak Shifting”). Now the price of a Solar Panel fell about 80% during a period of fierce competition between manufacturers from 2008 to 2013 … before stabilizing. And that competition has just begun to heat up between Battery manufacturers over the past 18 months … meaning the price of Batteries will likely become economically exciting in only 3 to 5 years. So when installing a new Solar Power System now, Householders rightly want to ensure that they can add Batteries later. And Solar Retailers respond by marketing “Battery Ready” Solar Power Systems. But of course, as with most things, but particularly with complicated electrical equipment, the Devil is in the Detail and “Battery Ready” does not always mean the same thing !!! Over coming instalments of “Energy Watch”, I will describe some of the technicalities of adding Batteries to different types of Solar Power Equipment so that you can, as far as possible, future-proof investments that you make today. And also address adding Batteries to older systems that we installed some years ago. But first I want to take a step back because whether or not a Solar Power System is “Battery Ready” also depends on exactly what you intend to do with the Batteries when you eventually install them. And this not as obvious as it might seem. Many people reasonably expect that adding Batteries to a “Battery Ready” Solar System will give them a Backup System during a Blackout and can be bitterly disappointed as this is very often not the case. In my view, how a Householder approaches the use of Batteries and the Solar Equipment that they need to invest in depends on which of the following Four Scenarios they want to achieve: 1) Peak-Shifting Only (with **NO** Backup – so when the Mains Grid shuts down your Solar Panels and Batteries shutdown) 2) Peak-Shifting with Limited Backup (Essential Appliances only often on Dedicated Circuits) 3) Peak-Shifting with Full Backup (ie. Your Entire Home. Compatible with going Off-Grid later)

4) Going Off-Grid Completely And generally speaking as you move from Scenario 1 to Scenario 4 you are adding both complexity and cost to you Solar Power System both of which needs to addressed where required and avoided where not required !!! Cheers, Simon , BREAZE Energy Solutions (Please email and questions to simon@breaze.org.au) Kindly re published from the Meredith and District NEWS

MAYORS MESSAGE ~ JULY July is the mid-point of winter, so we’re approaching the warmer weather! I certainly hope that our primary producers across the shire have had enough rain to help them continue to grow and create products that Golden Plains can continue be proud of. Much of that produce can be found at the Golden Plains Farmers’ Market, held on the first Saturday of each month in Bannockburn. If you live in the north of the Shire, it’s well worth the drive to get premium meats, cheeses, wines and more. REGISTER TO ‘HelpOUT’ DURING EMERGENCIES Emergencies can become overwhelming for emergency services, who take hundreds of calls from people volunteering to help. These offerings are a testament to our community spirit, however can be difficult to manage. HelpOUT is an emergency volunteer database that helps relieve some of this pressure – it coordinates a list of volunteers who have registered to be contacted in future emergencies. So if an emergency happens, people don’t have to call up busy service providers to register as volunteers – they’re already registered with HelpOUT. To register or find out more, please visit www.volunteeringvictoria.org.au/helpout TELL US WHY YOU LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE As part of Council’s Events, Marketing and Communications Strategy, we are planning to develop profiles for our towns and communities, and feature one profile in each Gazette. While Council knows a lot about our Shire, we want to hear what you love about where you live – what is special about your local area? If people were to visit, what is a must-see or must-do? Is there a local mystery or mind-boggling fact people should know? How can new residents get involved in the community? Answer these questions and address them to the Communications and Marketing team, either by emailing enquiries@gplains.vic.gov.au or posting them to Golden Plains Shire Council, PO Box 111, Bannockburn Victoria 3331. SHOULD YOU STAND FOR COUNCIL? Local Government elections will be held in October. Golden Plains Shire Council, in conjunction with the Municipal Association Victoria, is holding ‘Stand for Council’ briefing sessions which are all about helping you find out everything you need to know about standing for Council and local government. For example, you could be a Councillor if you are:  interested in improving your community  an Australian citizen  18 or over on election day  a resident or ratepayer of Golden Plains Shire Council. I encourage anyone interested in standing for Council to attend these useful sessions. You can find out more at www.standforcouncil.com.au Cr Des Phelan, Mayor, Golden Plains Shire Council

ADVERTISER PROFILE ~ WOODY WEED CONTROL David Gollan has been a long time woody weed spraying contractor overseeing many options to control these weeds over the years. David says by far the most efficient and cost effective way to deal with woody weeds is to get it down to ground level where it can be spot sprayed or cultivated, returning the paddock to production as soon as possible. No chemicals are involved with mulching, bio mass returned is to the soil and space is made available for preferred species to grow. Water and sun light is made available for grasses. Habitat for foxes and rabbits is destroyed. The use of rubber tyred tractor means minimal soil disturbance. So call David now on 0417-321-390 to discuss your woody weed problems.

DELTA THERAPY DOGS VISIT THE BALLARAT VOLUNTEER FESTIVAL

Below Haddon Learning Centre volunteer Andrea Glew at the Volunteer Festival

Delta Therapy Dogs The Delta Society Australia is a not-for-profit organization with one core belief that the human-animal bond remarkably improves our quality of life and leaves a lasting paw print on our hearts. There is a special bond shared between dogs and humans of all ages. Attention from a dog can brighten your day, make you feel loved and improve your overall health and wellbeing. The Delta Therapy Dogs program is the largest of its kind in Australia. Every week, Delta’s amazing and devoted ‘Volunteer Therapy Dog’ teams bring joy to the lives of over 20,00 Australians in hospitals and health care facilities. Currently there are over 1,000 volunteers and their amazing four legged friends throughout Australia who spend time with patients to offer a chat, a floppy ear to listen and a paw to shake. This being said, the ‘Delta Therapy Dogs’ program is always looking for new volunteers and their canine companion to join the organization. If you love talking with people about your dog, they have a good temperament and you have a spare hour or two every week to volunteer in your local community then the ‘Delta Therapy Dogs’ could be an incredibly rewarding experience for you. For more information about becoming a Delta Therapy Dog volunteer, or to simply donate to the program, please visit www.deltasociety.com.au Page 23
