RESIDUAL RETURNING TO THEIR ROUTES Geelong indie rock band, Residual, will pay homage to their roots and inspire other young musical talent when they return to headline the Push Start Battle of the Bands competition in August. The 2015 FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands competition will be held at the Meredith Memorial Hall on Friday 14 August. This an annual Victorian Battle of the Bands contest for people aged 14 – 25. It’s a great event, providing important opportunities for young musicians and emerging artists to gain local exposure and live performance time. This Year’s Push Start competition will see a line-up of local young emerging musicians who will battle it out for a spot at the Barwon Regional Final in October. Supported by the Meredith Music Festival and Music Workshop, Residual will also join a panel of judges to provide their feedback and critique to the young musicians. Residual first joined the Push Start competition in 2013 at the Courthouse Battle of the Bands. Following their success, the four-piece band went on to join the line-up at the Push Pop-Up stage at Moomba which opened the doors for many more big things. The boys have since been on an Australian tour, released an extended play (EP) and supported many big name artists like British India and The Cairos. Registrations for Battle of the Bands are still open for soloists, duos and bands to apply. A series of workshops will also be held in the weeks prior to the competition for those starting out with their music or for those wishing to advance their already existing talent. Visit www.goldenplains.vic.gov.au/youth for application guidelines and workshop details.

AUSTRALIANS EXERCISING TO THE MOON ~ AN OPEN LETTER Our 6 year old daughter, Eva, lost her life last October to an aggressive soft tissue cancer. As a legacy to her we have created the charity Braver Stronger Smarter Inc to help raise awareness and research funds for high risk childhood cancers like hers which have not shown an increase in survival for decades. With only 3.7% of federal cancer research funds being directed towards all childhood cancers the outlook for change is heavily dependent on community support. Our first major fundraiser is to exercise to the moon and back as a cumulative effort across the nation and we would love your council and region to join us. This will be the first Australian led intergenerational, international SPACE MISSION and is a mere 739 494km (based on distance at 31st July). In the spirit of the fun of childhood and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle we would love to invite as many people on board as possible. We currently have senators, MPs, school groups, kindergartens, running clubs, walking clubs, many individuals and businesses and a canoeing club on board. We also have the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Rugby League club. During the month of the Blue Moon – July2nd to July31st, we are asking everyone to exercise to the moon and back to raise money for childhood cancer research and awareness. Every kilometre brings us closer to our goal with each kilometre (completed alone or by a cumulative many) to be sponsored a minimum of $1. Donations over $2 are tax deductible. The ‘blue moon’ is symbolic of the notion that childhood cancer is rare. (The next blue moon is not until 2018). Exercising ‘to the moon and back’ is symbolic of the fact that we all love our children to the moon and back and would do anything for them. The clocking up kilometres and ‘moving forward’ as a united group is symbolic of the need to collaboratively support our incredible scientists to find gentler treatments and cures for our children. Fund your own efforts or find sponsors to support your space adventure. Each group or individual who exceeds 30km will have their name written on a heart rope to be stretched out at an iconic Australian landmark to acknowledge their amazing astroexernautical efforts. Information, free registration and sponsorship forms are available via our website http://www.braverstrongersmarter.com.au/ or simply email us back and we can send you any information you require. ~ Don and Sharleigh Wheatley

More details about options for adding batteries to Solar to follow next month. Cheers, Simon Send your queries to simon@breaze.org.au, or visit the website at: breaze.org.au
Okay, I have your attention, but I am not going to try to sell you anything … and in fact, I am going to advise you not to buy … at least not yet … But I have exciting news about prices.
This article is reprinted with the kind permission from the Meredith and District NEWS..
For the last couple of years the Solar Industry has been hyping the adding Batteries to Grid-Connected Solar Power Systems as the next big thing … The reasons are obvious: while the sun is shining and a Solar Power System is generating power, the majority of households in use very little power because Mum & Dad are at work and the Kids are at school. Power is really needed in the evening for cooking, heating/cooling, lights, television, etc. Batteries allow the capturing of solar energy at lunchtime for use at dinnertime. Previously State Governments created incentives to “Go Solar” by mandating generous subsidized Feed-in Tariffs Schemes under which households sold power back to their Electricity Retailer during the day for at least the price they could buy it for, earning Credit that could be used to buy power in the evening. But the current feed-in rate in Victoria is now only 6c/kWh with no guarantee into the future that there will be any mandated minimum feed-in tariff at all … So while the technology already exists to deliver the solutions, the price of the Batteries has made the Value Proposition (despite what some players in the Industry might tell you) economically unexciting – breakeven over the life of the equipment at best and not something that will save you money. But that is all about to change. Many people are aware of the Tesla Electric Car Corporation in the USA. Telsa knows that the key to popularizing their Electric Car is getting the price of Batteries down. In 2014, Telsa announced their huge new GigaFactory for Batteries designed to reduce prices by increasing production volumes. The other obvious market to grow demand for Batteries is Grid-Connected Solar Power. And in May 2015, Telsa has announced their Grid-Connected Battery Storage solution - “The PowerWall”. Tesla is so good at Razzle-Dazzle Marketing that many media reports seem to suggest that Telsa invented off Grid-Connected Battery Storage with Solar. They didn’t. But what they have done is release the PowerWall into the US Market at an Unbelievable Crazy Low Price – less than half the price of competing solutions. For me, this is the long-predicted beginning of fierce competition between manufacturers to bring their prices down to compete. I would not be investing in Batteries yet … but I would be watching this space very carefully and expect exciting economic returns from Batteries within five years and possibly in just one or two.

Asperger syndrome is one of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This means that people with Asperger syndrome can display a wide range of behaviours and social skills, and no two individuals will have the same set of characteristics. Some people will demonstrate skills that are mostly in line with their peers, while others may present with ‘odd’ behaviours. Other people will appear to be significantly different from their peers. Haddon Community Learning Centre is conducting a free hour workshop led by Loretta Edmonston, on Wednesday August 19th at 1pm concentrating on children with Asperger's; what is it, what are the symptoms, how do you deal with it. Loretta, who is a qualified Primary teacher has had first hand experience and wants to help parents take away some ideas and strategies on how to make their child happier at school and how you as a parent, family member , or school teacher can bring out the best in these children.

CRW photography. ~ REQUEST - WANTED ~ We have had a request from Chris Rigg who would really like information from anyone who knows about the whereabouts of any of the plaques from the former Avenue of Honour site in Haddon. Any information would be very much appreciated. These plaques were unfortunately misplaced when the big pine trees were bulldozed in about the year 2000. If anyone has any idea of their whereabouts can you please contact Chris directly on 5342 4800.
