RECOVERY OF THE ANCIENT CONNECTIONS BETWEEN T H E CIT Y O F T H E LI V IN G AND THE CIT Y OF THE DEAD AND refurbishment OF THE OLD WOOLEN MILL
T HES I S D EG R EE I N A R C HI T E CTONI C DE SI G N 01/06/2012 “ [...] nature wishes to teach us: nothing exists on its own; everything is part of a total harmony. All things are interconnected for they are all affected and changed by each other. We can apprehend one thing only through the intermediary of everything else. “ Dimitris Pikionis, “A sentimental topography”
In Tarquinia this total harmony is now lost and our aim is to make it arise again. Tarquinia was one of the most important coastal cities of Southern Etruria and its painted tombs are one of the greatest artistic expressions of the Etruscan Age. Unfortunately the modern borders are different from the ones which really define Tarquinia’s territorial system. It is possible to identify two different systems: the natural borders, which are defined by the morphology of the territory, and the anthropic borders of the acropolis and the necropolis. Two hills which have been naturally connected since the Bronze Age through three paths which follow the territory’s morphology. The most ancient path dated IX sec. b.C. is still in use nowadays and features three points of interest: the joint between the path and the necropolis , the valley and the ascent to the acropolis. The project focuses on the first point of interest, which represents a joint between the ancient and the modern road system. Moreover, an ancient woolen mill is located in the joint: the perfect location for a new tourists reception. An hypogeal dromos bypasses a modern road and directly connects the reception with the new route which merge the archeology with the territory.

LABORATORY OF ARCHITECTONIC AND URBAN DESIGN with Tommaso Alberghi e Giacomo Del Buono fall 2009/ 4 months
The old slaughterhouse area in Rome is included in a urban plan of redevelopment. Its buildings will become the future campus of the arts of Roma Tre University. In particular the area of the intervention stands on the public square where the building of the “fridge” of the old slaughterhouse settle. The intervention is meant to have the building of the “fridge” as its starting point, so that the building will remain part of the city and an essential part of the new building. The project is the library for the Roma Tre campus. The preserved walls of the old fridge have been consolidated with a particular attention on foundations. This project has been elaborated in depth: from the choices in the preliminary project to the detailed construction necessities. Specifically, the heating and air- conditioning system and the study of the natural and artificial light in the rooms.

The Alessandrino area, in the east side of Rome is deteriorated both at the urban and architectural scale. Its aqueduct and park are the crucial elements of the area and represents the identity and memory of the place. The strategy of the intervention is to locate the public space of the neighbourhood along the main axis of the aqueduct and to reconnect it to the system of historical parks in the east side of Rome. In particular the area of the intervention insist on the border of the neighborhood, with the aim to be the start and the end of a path along the aqueduct. The project is a cultural and sporting center for the neighborhood. The cultural part is collocated in a tower which enriches a system of medieval towers that exist in this vast part of Rome. The sporting area is semi-hypogeic, taking advantage of the morphology of the area.

The San Saba area is defined by the mark of the ancient Aurelian Walls of Rome. The area of intervention insists on the corner of the walls so that it can be reached from both east and west. the strategy of the intervention is to focus on such walls and let them become a strong pedestrian axis to lead people to the new building. The project is a cultural center and a residential complex. The cultural center is is semi-hypogeic, taking advantage of the morphology of the area. It is connected with the city and the archeology by a system of “green paths. The residential estate is located on the top of the cultural center, on a elevated square. The apartments are different sized, to accommodate every kind of needs. The living area of every apartment goes side to side as an open space.

Villa Adriana is one of the most important villas of the Roman Imperial Age. The aim of the workshop was to realize a new Roman Imperial Museum dislocated from Tivoli to Rome, and its merchandising. In particular the area of the Pretorio has its peculiarity in the secular olive trees which stands above the archaeology. The strategy of the intervention is to give a new function to such olive tree grove. The project consist in a wood platform which grows around the secolar olive trees. The museum is divided into three sections, which follow the grid of the platform. All the intervention has a steel structure, so that all the intervention can be removed.
