reflections of clouds, peaks, and the occasional mirage, as in any desert that is appreciated. At an altitude of 3,670 meters above sea level and only 30 minutes from the salt flat, the city of Uyuni is known for its friendly and affectionate people. TRAIN CEMETERY

In 1890 the wagons loaded gold, silver and tin, among other minerals, now turned into a ghost train station, more than 3,000 meters high located in Uyuni, "This is life", or "Here lies progress", are some of the painted phrases that can be read among the metal masses. Tourists are attracted by the unusual rust cemetery turned into a ghost train station at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters located in Uyuni, a city in southwestern Bolivia belonging to the department of Potosi.

POOPO LAGOON BEFORE AND AFTER 40,000 years ago, the area comprising the Uyuni salt flat was covered by Lake Minchin. During this period, a phase of humid climate, with more rainfall than today, raised the level of the lakes to approximately 100 m above the current level. 11,000 years later came a dry and warm period, which produced a great reduction in the surface and volume of the Tauca or Tauka lakes, thus originating today's salt flats and lagoons. The Coipasa salt flat and the Poopó (now extinct) and Uru Uru lakes are also vestiges of these great prehistoric lakes. Uyuni is important because of its proximity to Bolivia's favorite tourist attraction of the magnificent Salar de Uyuni.

However, this brine not only provides an extraterrestrial environment to this salty desert but also contains very important minerals, such as borax (sodium borate or sodium tetraborate), magnesium and sodium chloride, but above all lithium, which is used to manufacture batteries, computers, cell phones, televisions and various devices.

But it is not the only thing that Uyuni provides: local artisans can process up to 5,000 kilos of salt a day some 25,000 tons a year both for human consumption and for the construction of houses and hotels. This has attracted the attention of Japanese, French and Korean companies, as well as the governments of Russia, Iran and China.

You can also do activities such as: Day trips, Railway tours, Hiking, Nature and wildlife, Extreme activities, Offroad routes, Safaris, Ecological guided tours.

Incahuasi Island is formed on the remains of a volcano 120 meters above the surface of the salt mines. On this island there are 7 archaeological sites belonging to the Tiwanaku culture. There are two Inca ruins, 30 caverns, 12 natural tunnels and 1 cactus forest (quirucolumbar, pillaya, piscallu, thulo, huajraguaya, anaguaya).

Cujiri Island, better known as Isla del Pescado (Fish Island), is located 74 kilometers from Colchani, right in the middle of the salt mines. It has a total area of 100 hectares and a very picturesque landscape.
