How to combine old and new ?

ancient buildings

Thinking: How to combine the old with the new is a topic of daily discussion in design and art. Under different perspectives and different starting points, the combination of old and new will produce different design ideas and results. When I was investigating ancient buildings, I was deeply attracted by the decoration on the beams of ancient buildings, which recorded the daily life and beliefs of ancient people. Compared with the way we record our lives today, not only can we use electronic devices to record every moment of our lives, it can also be a dynamic segment. Therefore, I began to reflect on how to translate the characteristics of traditional elements and modern recording methods into space design. 1

VISTUAL ART

THE ANCIENT WAY OF RECORDING People are accustomed to transforming daily life and beliefs into paintings and sculptures, which are recorded on building walls and structures.

MODERN WAY OF RECORDING People are accustomed to using electronic equipment to record the moments of movement, and most of the recorded information is based on the pixel grid on the screen,

CONCEPT Inspired by the difference between the ancient and modern recorded lifestyles, I used the elements of the ancient records on the architecture as design materials, and the characteristics of the modern recorded events are mapped to these pattern elements. Finally I translated them into a folk art Museum space. Before officially launching the design, I created the visual art on the right to express my vision of the design concept.

STEP 4. HOW THE PATTERN GENERATES SPACE

STEP 1. PATTERN SELECTION

First of all, I use pixel motion (a commonly used video editing special effect) method to present the movement in the contemporary way of recording events in the design.

I collected design materials through field inspections. Among the patterns with complete borders, patterns with spatial potential are screened out according to their contours.

Then, the pattern of each frame obtained after pixel movement is converted into pixel squares and then superimposed to obtain a threedimensional space prototype.

STEP 6. THREE-DIMENSIONAL SPACE EXPERIMENT In order to explore the characteristics of the space obtained from STEP 4, I used the pattern obtained in STEP 2 as experimental materials, and found the potential possibilities of the space by analyzing the rationality of the three-dimensional space. I have selected 5 representative models from many model tests, and drawn the necessary experimental conclusions from them.

According to the experimental conclusions, I selected the E model in the experiment as the basic prototype for readjustment.

FACADE

I evaluate the structural stability of different spatial models by observing their facade outlines.

CONCLUSION 1 :By comparing their facade outlines, I can know from this that the movement of the pattern position will affect the three-dimensional form. Compared with the three modes of A, B and C, the D and E modes with outer frame control are easier to achieve the stability of the building. SECTION

1.PATTERN PLACEMENT: I regard patterns of different colors as blocks with different functions. Then by opening the distance between the patterns, the skylight i s i n t ro d u c e d i n t o t h e building.

2.PATTERN COMBINATION: According to the function of the building, I cut the volume to create a semioutdoor gray space as a public activity space in response to the subtropical climate.

I observe the richness and rationality of space through two vertical sections.

X-AXIS SECTION

3.PATTERN CHANGE MODE:

CONCLUSION 2: The richness of the space produced by multiple patterns (C ,D , E ) is stronger than that produced by a single pattern (A, B) Y-AXIS SECTION

By changing the cutting position of the pattern and slightly changing the position of the pattern, I draw different patterns as the raw material for pixel motion.

CONCLUSION 3: I found that because the stacking direction of the volume is parallel to this section direction, it can be considered as a section when placing the pattern position. PLAN

Finally, I once again confirmed the above conclusion on the spatial richness judgment from the plane. 4.FINAL FORM: F i n a l l y, I a p p l i e d t h e mechanism described in STEP 4 (pattern pixelation, pixel motion, layer stacking) to get the basic shape of the building.

FINAL CONCLUSION:Through the above three-dimensional model experiment and comparative analysis, I can know that the space generated by the mechanism of STEP 4 can indeed greatly increase the richness of space. I choose the best model in the experiment, and adjust the model again according to the space function according to the principle of pattern placement (CONCLUSION 3:it can be considered as a section when placing the pattern position). 4

INSPIRATION

How to explore the development of architecture?

TAN

KA

In the past, there lived a group of people called Tanka on the water of the Pearl River. They were restricted from the right to move on the shore and could only make a living by fishing on the water. They had no chance to go to school to learn knowledge like the people on the land, and they were always oppressed by the people on the land. 7

Thinking: Though now the scene of tens of thousands of Tanka people living on the waters of the Pearl River no longer exists. However, if the Tanka culture could be spread and grown in history, the development of landscape architecture on the Pearl River may change drastically from what we see now. Therefore, I conceived a background that is contrary to the past history: if the Tanka culture could be spread, how will the water landscape architecture of the Pearl River change from then on? How will architecture go through the process of reincarnate in this story ?

MIND MAP After sorting out the information about the development of the Pearl River along the timeline, I fabricated a story about the development of water landscape architecture along different periods.

STORY DEVELOPMENT

1.LIFE SCENE ON THE PEARL RIVER (1930)

2.FLOURISHING AGE: BUILD A FLOATING SCHOOL (1950)

HISTORY: In the past, there were many people living on boats on the Pearl River. They were called Tanka people or Boat Dwellers. Apart from fishing for a living, they also had many other activities on the boat.

IMAGINARY:In order to spread the marine culture of the Tankas, people built a school for children living on the water. The children here can not only learn the same general classroom knowledge as children living on land, but also learn marine knowledge and practice here.

DECONSTRUCTION OF THE SHIP

STRATEGY

2.divide

Possibility in space construction 1. Enclosure

2. Extension

1. Based on Tanka people lived in a boat, the ship components are deconstructed and integrated into space.

2. Refer to the way that the ship relies on ramp when docking, and cantilevered members are added so that the space can be connected to other spaces when docked on the water.

FUNCTION In addition to learning basic skills such as fishing and swimming, children studying in floating school also need to learn to exchange goods and cultural propaganda with people living on land, and ultimately achieve the purpose of inheriting and spreading marine culture.

3. Based on the need to adapt to unstable weather, adding a shrinkable canvas can not only enhance the adaptability to the weather, but also play a role in cultural propaganda.

BIRDVIEW OF THE FLOATING SCHOOL

ENCLOSURE: Unlike traditional land-based schools, floating schools need flexible enclosure methods to cope with various environmental changes. For example, in the children's pick-up platform, use canvas to enclose the top surface. The stretchable canvas can not only flexibly enclose a semiopen space, but also correspond to different weather environments.

PICK-UP PLATFORM

BOUNDARY:With the strength of Tanka culture, demand for commodity transactions between land and water has increased. In order to facilitate commodity trading, structures on land began to stretch out to the water, and the straight forbidden line between land and water began to be broken. There are many interactions between Tanka people and the people on the land on the border. For example, the floating market, the cultural promotion of Danjia, etc.

3.COLLAPSE (2050)

4.REBUILD: MARINE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION BASE (2030)

PREDICTION: Due to the limited construction technology at that time, the floating school could not withstand the impact of sea level rise and collapsed.

IMAGINARY:In the later generations, a group of marine culture researchers felt it was a pity that they organized a group of people with lofty ideals to rebuild an water research and learning base. They study oceanography here, and at the same time, the public can also visit and learn marine culture here.

THE ROLE OF SECTION FOR ARCHITECTS

How we design from section?

As architects, in the process of space derivation, we can intuitively observe the relationship between people, people and space, and space and space in different spaces in the section.

I think it needs to be adjusted here…

Thinking: In real buildings, there is actually no perspective from which we usually draw annotated views. Sections are the wisdom of architects to transform three-dimensional problems into more intuitive twodimensional problems. When we design space, we often examine the richness of space and its interrelationship by observing the profile of the building. I tried to think in the opposite direction: can the section plane be the starting point of our design? Project type selection: I chose to discuss how to design from the section in a course at a design art museum. The art gallery has a large degree of freedom in the design of the richness of the space, so we can freely display the design in the section. Workflow :Before preparing to design from the section, I first divided the building blocks according to the site conditions. Then, I set up a set of workflow as an attempt to design space from the section

13

SITE STRATEGY

SPATIAL STRATEGY

1.According to the outline of the site, cut the building block and leave the entrance and exit of the building.

After dividing the building's functional blocks, I tried to design the space from the section. First of all, I divide the functional blocks of the building into two categories: spaces with strong publicity and spaces with strong privacy. Most public spaces need to induce interaction. Therefore, I screened out the more public space as the follow-up research object.

1. Screen out blocks with strong publicity

CHANGE IN WORKING MODE

How to balance work and life ?

Traditional feudal period Male farming and female weaving, producing at home

Thinking: In ancient times, most people formed a self-sufficient lifestyle based on agricultural production, and family members were partners in work. With the outbreak of the Industrial Revolution, people began to leave their homes to work in factories, using machines as new production tools. Now, offices in high-rise buildings are the main working environment for most people. With the development of network technology, using the Internet for office work at home will become a new trend in the future. Compared with ancient people, our work partners will still be our colleagues in the future, rather than family members. So I want to explore how should we rebalance work and life at home?

PHENOMENON

How we handle with death today?

The tombstones of the dead are constantly stacking up, and at the same time, the living people are generating more and more data in the world. After the death of a person, his body and data disappeared immediately. The traces of most people's existence in the world can only be pinned on the tombstone.

Thinking:Today, we are all based on data. Mobile phones and computers seem to have become our organs, and we generate data through them, and data is also a mark of our existence. After the death, only the tombstone remains as a memorial.Relatives and friends can only mourn the dead at the cold tombstone. The data generated before the dead life has nowhere to go.I think, can we compress the data of the past life to the place of sacrifice, so that when people mourn their dead relatives in front of the tombstone, they will no longer face the cold tombstone to remember the dead alone. 21

PROBLEMS & IMPACTS By enumerating the environmental problems of current tombs and the solutions under current technology, I screened out the most environmentally friendly solutions and combined them into a new tomb system. 1.Harmful to environmental sustainability.

How the function of space affects form ?

Time : Spring 2019 (4 weeks) Project type: Bookshop Design Location: The original site of Fangsuo Bookstore, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, Guangdong , China CONTRIBUTION: Concept, 3D Model, Plan design and drawing, Diagram design and drawing RESPONSIBILITY: TEAMLEADER WORKMATE: Wu XinTong, Ge Qing

Thinking: I try to use the function of space as the starting point of design, and try to explore how architectural space affects its form. I believe that the function of space is based on the needs of people. We can consider the needs of people from different perspectives, and analyze the functional needs of buildings in different spatial states, and finally generate different forms of space based on this. Therefore, in this bookstore design project, I first divide the functional blocks on the architectural plan. Then, in order to weaken the existence of the pillars in the space, I chose the spherical shape as the basic form of the space. I create spheres of different sizes according to people's public needs for different functional spaces. I imagine different spatial states based on human activities, and then adjust the height and position of the ball in the section.I use the metaball algorithm to fuse all the spheres. Finally, we can get a spatial form derived from the function.

25

ANALYSIS 1. Divide functional blocks according to needs, and the negative space is the book gallery.
