Our staff spend a lot of time figuring out how to breed better cattle for our customers. We study bloodlines, EPD information and spend time planning matings to produce future bulls. As a result, we have built a comprehensive catalogue with a great deal of valuable information to help with your decisions.

Sale Terms and Conditions

The terms of the sale are cash, cheque or credit card unless satisfactory arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the sale clerk before any cattle will be released.

Terms policy is as follows: Interest at the rate of 1.5% Per Month (Annual rate of 18%) will be added to all accounts over 30 days past due as determined by the invoice date unless previous finance arrangements have been made with Soderglen Ranches ltd.

Soderglen Herdsire Purchase Program

(HPP)

We are offering a financing option for our customers. On sale day, when you clerk out you will be asked for 50% payment plus warranty if you choose it and the remaining 50% we will finance for 8 months. The interest (5%) will be calculated at the sale desk and put on your Select 2023 sale invoice.

Give Elan a call before the sale and we will be happy to help you with your financing of a Soderglen Herdsire.

Disputes

In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters is final.

Purchaser’s Risk

Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time.

Announcements

Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the auction stand at sale time and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.

Rights and Obligations

The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected therefore are not covered by the terms and conditions of the sale.

Accidents

Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the auctioneer or Soderglen assume any responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property.

Sale Order

The bulls will be sold in catalogue order.

Buyer Registration

We request that all prospective buyers attending the sale register and receive a buyer number before the sale. If you know you can make it to the sale, please call ahead so we can have your buyer number ready on sale day.

Bidding

Soderglen Ranches Ltd. reserves the right to refuse any bids, live or on internet for any reason whatsoever. We can also refuse the delivery of any animal(s), in which case the purchase price will be reimbursed to the buyer in full.

Registration Papers

Soderglen will provide a registration for any bull that is listed as registered in the catalogue. Let us know at the settlement desk and it will be mailed out to you.

SIGHT UNSEEN Purchase Plan

If you can’t make the sale give us a call, we know our cattle well and are confident that we can select bulls that meet your specifications. Some of our customers think we do a better job of buying their bulls than they do. Our Sight Unseen Program takes most of the risks out of purchasing bulls. Helping you with your purchases, however, places a lot of responsibility on us, so please call early.

Stay at WarrantyHome

In an effort to cover liability issues and protect the buyer’s interests, we require your bull(s) be covered under our Warranty Program or with your own insurance company.

Bidders who are successful in making a purchase will be contacted the week after the sale and an invoice will be mailed out. When the bull is delivered to your central delivery point if you are not satisfied with your purchase, your money will be refunded and the bull will be brought home. In all of our years of business and thousands of bulls sold, we have only brought two bulls home!

Online Bidding

We will be using DLMS internet bidding this year (see page 8).

If at all possible, we invite you to stop by to evaluate the bulls prior to sale day. Please see our website at www.soderglen.com to view the bull videos online.

Order Buyers

We have two consultants as well as Soderglen staff that are available to help you with your decisions. Should you choose to use our Sight Unseen Purchase Program, Jared, Dan or Will (pictured below) will handle your bid to get the bulls you require. You also have the option of calling in when the sale is on and placing your bid over the phone.

BREEDING Season Warranty

Soderglen’s Warranty Program offers a cut rate warranty in a language you can understand. Soderglen will warranty your bull and carry all risk. In our opinion, using only Mortality Insurance is money out the window with little or no value because 96% of bull problems are injury, not death.

We have the ability to make cash settlement or service your needs with another bull, whichever you choose. Should you have any problem with a bull, contact Jared at (403) 333-0499 and we will handle the problem immediately. Your veterinarian and yourself will fill out a claim form provided by Soderglen and that is all that is needed to take care of your claim.

It’s unfortunate but sometimes bulls will become injured prior to or during their first breeding season and often these injuries are life threatening. In an effort to better serve our customers we are offering an optional warranty on all bulls sold through this sale. This warranty will cover loss of use from injuries as well as death.

Notify Soderglen immediately by phone, fax or email.

Employ a licensed veterinarian to treat, diagnose and fill out claim form.

If the animal dies, a post-mortem may be required.

Exclusions to Policy

Injury or death due to malicious, willful or intentional acts or mistreatment by you or your employees are fraudulent claims.

All guarantees and or warranty will be revoked on bulls that are not paid for within 30 days of the invoice date, unless previous arrangements have been made with Soderglen Ranches Ltd.

◊ Bull is structurally sound and capable of breeding cows naturally.

◊ Bull can be handled using proper animal handling techniques (no pick-ups, neighbors’ dogs or cousins from the city).

◊ F leshing ability - within 9 months after breeding season your bull should have recovered the weight loss and be in a reasonable, healthy condition with a good quality forage diet.

If the conditions of the Guarantee are not achieved we will do one of four things:

1. Replace the bull with one of equal value (most practical during or before breeding season)

2. Replace the bull and adjust the value agreed upon (most practical during or before breeding season)

3. Take back or ship the bull and a credit will be given to you for the selection of another bull the following year (most practical after breeding season)

4. Take back or ship the bull and a credit will be given to you for the selection of another bull the following year (most practical after breeding season):

After 1 breeding season - 75% of the purchase price

Year 2 - 50% of the purchase price

Year 3 - 25% of the purchase price

PERFORMANCEData

WEANING WEIGHT (WW)

All weights are taken at weaning and adjusted to 205 days to allow you to compare the bulls on an even playing field.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW)

All weights are taken at the end of test and adjusted to 365 days, again to let you easily compare the bulls.

WEIGHT PER DAY OF AGE (W.P.D.A.)

All weights at the end of test are used to calculate the bull’s weight per day of age. It covers the entire gaining period to date (on the cow and on the feed).

AVERAGE DAILY GAIN (A.D.G)

After a 30 day warm-up period, bulls are put on test to measure their A.D.G. for the next 120 days.

ESTIMATED SALE WEIGHT

Actual weights were taken in December 2022.

LONG YEARLING S.C.

Actual scrotal measurements were taken October, 2022 by Veterinary Agri-Health. The bulls extended, palpated and semen tested. All bulls meet industry standards based on breed and age.

DISPOSITION SCORING SYSTEM

1. These bulls have been eliminated from the program. They are not easily handled.

2. Harder to handle with a wide flight zone. These bulls will get worked up very easily when alone or under pressure.

3. Most of the bulls fit into this score. 3’s are very easy to handle but will move off pressure with ease.

4. These bulls are extremely quiet and will take a lot of pressure.

CALVING EASE

Calving ease is one of the biggest concerns to most bull buyers and most often related to the birth weight of a bull. However, there are many other factors that are influences like nutrition and gestation. Our ratings are based on all of the information we have available.

Should produce minimal calving problems when bred to moderate sized, first calf heifers.

Recommended for use on second calvers or small framed cows – 1100 to 1300 lbs.

Recommended for mature cows - 1400+ lbs.

HORNED-SCURRED-POLLED

Horned. Horn growth affixed to the skull that has or has not been removed. Polled. Rudimentary horn growth that will not develop into a horn. Scurs are the result of an independent gene unrelated to either the horned or polled gene. Scurred. Absence of horn growth. (An animal can have scurs and still be genetically polled.)

ULTRASOUND EVALUATION OF CARCASS TRAITS

Ultrasound data was taken at 14 months of age.

Ribeye Area (IN2) - gives an indication of overall carcass muscling.

Fat Depth (MM) - gives an indication of overall carcass fat content.

Lean Meat Yield % (LMY) - gives the percentage of lean meat in a carcass. Marbling Score - gives an indication of the juiciness & eating quality of beef - AAA, AA, A.

WE WILL DEVELOP AND DELIVER YOUR BULL

At the settlement desk please leave delivery instructions for your location. Customers will be informed as to the delivery points, you are expected to meet the truck on arrival unless prior arrangements have been made. We are offering free delivery points to Alberta and Saskatchewan.

We will keep all the bulls after the sale and feed them at high roughage ration at no cost, until April 1, 2023. After that, you will be charged a cost of 250 per month after that date.

If you leave your bull at Soderglen please ensure that your bull(s) are covered by our Warranty Program or insurance of your own. British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario & Quebec will be at cost to the purchaser of commercial rate at time of delivery.

THE TEESFamily

The Tees family is a story of a family succeeding in the cattle business. Matt and Ronda Tees are an integral part of the Soderglen team. Ronda and her dad, Eldon, bought their first bull from Soderglen in 2000. They used our bulls for a couple of years and liked our program. They asked if they could somehow be a part of it. Soderglen sold them some of our purebred cows and the partnership started. Matt and Ronda took on becoming a co-operator for our MAX bulls.

Soderglen South owns and manages the summer cow herd of approximately 1300 cows representing 5 different lines of cattle. Roger has been with us 16 years, Ross 10 years and Jeff 9 years. We have a great team of people and the guys looks after their own cattle but come together to process in June as well as run an extensive AI project of 500 head. Hay is put up on our ranches for the cow herds and all calves are sent north in October to Soderglen Ranches, Airdrie.

Harvey Trimble Celebration of life

Harvey Trimble, Valiant Ranches, Okotoks, AB passed away in July , 2022. Harvey was a pioneer in the importation of continental cattle from the late 1960’s to the 1980’s. HIs understanding and passion for the seedstock business will be part of Western Canadian cattle industry history. His first venture was Charolais cattle and then eventually the Simmental breed. Everyone who was involved in the largest genetic changes that the cattle business would ever undergo knew Harvey Trimble, Valiant Ranches.

Harvey was Stan Grad’s first boss, Harvey hired Stan out of the University of Wyoming to work for Trimble resources and that friendship and partnership lasted over 50 years. Harvey was to blame for Stan Grad’s passion for breeding cattle, something he has never been forgiven for lol. Harvey is in no small way a part of Soderglen’s success. Harvey was a mentor to Elan and I In our early years, teaching us everything from building catalogues to how to run an advertising program. We knew nothing and Harvey helped us with he business side of cattle sales and marketing. Harvey willingly gave his time, mentorship and friendship and was a legend in Alberta in the cattle and oil business. He is greatly missed by us all.

At Windy Ridge Ultrasound we have been working with beef carcass ultrasound for over 20 years. It has been a pleasure to work with Soderglen Ranches for many of these years. I have learned much visiting with Stan and Scott over this time. First and foremost the customer comes first. With this in mind Soderglen has become a leader in carcass cattle. They are able to track the carcasses through the packing plants, the feedlot, and with ultrasound to see where they are and they find themselves amongst the leaders in lean meat yield and muscle size and still have very good marbling. These bulls will add extra pounds to your carcasses without sacrificing quality.

Utrasound Carcass Measurements

Rib Fat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th rib reported in inches. Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3, & A4. Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 1000 lb carcass would have 600 lbs of lean muscle and 400 lbs of bone and fat.

Ribeye Area (REA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat will lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield.

Marbling: This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. This measurement is used to determine the quality grade of the carcass.

“We farm in West central Sask. We have been using Soderglen CCM bulls since 2011 to produce tan/white calves from our charolais cross cows. The result is moderate birth weight calves with thickness, length & sound structure. The replacement heifers have great maternal traits.
