HEALING IN SYMBIOSIS
I have always had a considerable enthusiasm for environmental study, ever since exploring the topic during a summer camp at a very early age. In this study tour, organized by Global Natural History Day, our team visited Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Centre at Wild Elephant Valley in Yunnan, China. Located in a minority-Dai settlement, the village made of local bamboo is encompassed by dense banana groves in the mountain, which contrasts with most of the fast-developing urban contexts I have ever seen. As local culture exhibits great respect for nature, together with the eminent efforts made by the rescue organization, I was able to see an impressive moment when the elephant Dad successfully lead the baby elephant back to wildlife and soon disappeared from sight in the jungle.
I was deeply touched and realized the importance of the symbiotic relationship between human beings, culture, and nature in restoring a healthy ecosystem. In my view, landscape design is not just about designing a single space, but about designing systems of intimate symbiotic relationships between objects in which they can heal physically or spiritually and co-exist benignly over time.

STATEMENT
The site is located on the southern coast of China and is highly affected by wave erosion. Most of the flood protection systems on the site are hard revetments, so the ecological sustainability is weak. This project removes the hard revetment and wave walls, allowing the mangrove seeds behind the original revetment to migrate with the tide to the shore. At the same time, by shaping the topography, the seeds can take root, creating a resilient natural wave barrier and improving the local ecology.

First, the dam and wall of the fish pond were broken through, and then prefabricated steel plates were inserted into the sand to create a new terrain through tidal silting of the sand, while the water flow carried the mangrove seeds into the terrain to take root and grow. The seeds of mangroves will fall in the water and drift with the water sulfur to the place where they take root. WANDER WITH THE SOUL

FROM FAIRYTALE TO THE SITE
The project is located in Zhuangta Hutong, one of the oldest hutongs in Beijing, which has experienced both prosperity and decline. It has now become a question of how to find peace of mind for the people living in this crowded community. In Wilde's story, he answers this question: how to face love, evil and death, and how to feel peace in life. In the story, the fisherman experiences love, indecision, betrayal and death. The design translates these elements of the fairy tale into spaces in which one can feel the emotions. At the same time, an underground car park is designed to release the traffic pressure within the community. The exit from the car park is set in a park where one can feel the healing and peace that comes from the connection between soul and nature.
The plot of "The Fisherman and his Soul" is set in motion when the title character accidentally catches a mermaid in his net. He falls in love with the Mermaid and tells her that he wants to marry her. She tells him that he can only marry her if he sends away his soul. From a Witch, the Fisherman learns how to send his soul away. The Soul makes several attempts to persuade the Fisherman to take him back, eventually convincing him to do so with the tale of a beautiful dancer who lives nearby. Too late does the Fisherman discover that the soul which he sent out into the world without a heart has become evil.

Roads of Hutong are blocked by numberous cars. Therefore, an underground parking lot is necessary.
New Entrances
The site is currently enclosed by the wall with three entrances that connect different neighborhoods.
Block the barriers and add new entrances to increase the accessibility of the site.
Build an underground parking lot to increase ground space and form a new route connecting parking lot, park and homes.
A young fisherman accidentally catches a mermaid in his net and falls in love with the Mermaid. ‘Little Mermaid, little Mermaid, love thee. Take me for thy bridegroom, for love thee.’ ‘If only thou wouldst send away thy soul, then could love thee.’ ‘The love of the body is vile,’ cried the Priest. 'Father,Tell me how can send my soul ‘Of what use is man’s soul to us? will sell thee my soul,’ 'Dance with me, then will send your soul away.' The Soul stood on the lonely beach and watched them. And when they had sunk down into the sea, went weeping away over the marshes. ‘Love is better,’ answered the young Fisherman. And the Soul said to him, 'When left thee turned my face to the East and journeyed. There is nothing better than Wisdom,’ There is nothing better than Riches,’ Soul waked him and said to him, ‘Rise up and go to the room of the merchant, even to the room in which he sleepeth, and slay him, and take from him his gold, for we have need of it.’ Every morning he called to the Mermaid, and every noon he called to her again, and at night-time he spake her name. Yet never did she rise out of the sea to meet him. The young Fisherman lying drowned in the surf, and clasped in his arms was the body of the little Mermaid. And when the young Fisherman knew that was an evil Soul and would abide with him always, he fell upon the ground weeping bitterly.

A herd of wandering elephants in southwest China's Yunnan providence has embarked on a 18-month-long adventure of mammoth proportions from 2020 to 2021. We systematically analysed the possible reasons of this phenomenon. We aim to select and create more suitable habitats for elephants, and to show them better migration paths by setting up village buffer zones and food-source bases, optimising habitat tree species and monitoring, in order to protect elephants while also protecting human property and personal safety. Through these changes, we hope to drive the economic development of local villages and explore the potential of local tourism, building a virtuous cycle of production-tourism-ecology and achieving a win-win situation for both ecology and economy.

Population
HABITAT DETERIORATION
National Highway "213" blocked the east-west migration path.More elephants are moving north out of the reserve.
The
Elephant migration is hampered by expanding villages as population increases. And conflicts between human and elephants have intensified.
The area of rubber forest and tea plantation has increased rapidly which has greatly reduced the habitat area of wild Asian elephants.
Plants grown in the food-source base mature at the same time which not only increases the elephants' dependence on crops in villages.
Jinghong Hydropower station results in an isolated elephant population in Mengkuang area of Lancang County.

The most suitable habitat for elephants is below 800 metres in altitude

The most suitable habitat for elephants has a slope of 10° or less.

This proposal is based on the Meng Yangzi Conservation Area in Xishuangbanna, and takes a part of Guanping Village, Jinghong City as an example. We aim to select and create more suitable habitats for elephants.

SITE
The cycle path through the village offers visitors a scenic cycling experience with views of the Homestay, tea plantations, fruit trees and food-sources base along the way.
The construction of the food source base is divided into three phases. The first phase involves villagers converting some of their fields to grow plants for the food-source base. The second stage is the plant growing stage. The third stage is when the food-source base plants mature and attract elephants to eat them.
