Sue Zane Williams has called Hawaii home for 37 years, following 20 years of both stateside and overseas assignments with her Air Force husband, now deceased. She has three grown children and five grandchildren. She has always been an avid seamstress, making most of her own clothing, as well as her children’s, when they were young. At various times she has embraced knitting, embroidery, crewel work and well as other hand crafts, but after discovering Hawaiian Quilting in the late 70s, she has put all her creative attention in to that form of stitching. Williams has taught Hawaiian Quilting for 30 years. She has been active in the Hawaiian Quilt Research program, which examines and documents historical Hawaiian quilts. She designed and created the quilt block that represents Hickam AFB in the huge 20 by 20 foot commemorative quilt hanging in the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. She and some of her students designed and quilted a Hawaiian sampler wall quilt to represent Hickam AFB at a community quilt display at the Mission Houses Museum. The quilt is currently hanging in the Wing Headquarters. Williams has also presented lectures

and demonstrations on Hawaiian Quilting at several of the annual Joint Spouses’ Conferences, as well as various other community organizations. She and her students stitched 13 lap quilts after Hurricane Katrina to be distributed to displaced families in the stricken area. Sue Zane enjoys introducing newcomers to the pleasure of creating a self made quilt in the Hawaiian style. The finished quilts, whether large or small, are a lasting memento of the quilter’s stay in Hawaii. Learn how to make these beautiful Hawaiian pillows. Class sessions will be held on September 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 9–11 a.m. and 7–9 p.m. Cost is $30 plus supplies.
