Hickam Harbor staycation

Grab your poles and go bottom fishing

Want to have a fun family weekend, but don’t want to spend a lot of money? Camp out on Friday, September 4 and enjoy a movie on the beach with our large, outdoor movie screen. Wake up the next day on our glorious beach and enjoy an exciting day at Splashtacular. There will be inflatable games for kids and tide pool explorations. The cost for the campsite is only $10. Camping and outdoor movie begins at 4 p.m. on September 4 and ends at 9 a.m. the following morning. Splashtacular begins at 11 a.m. on September 5 and lasts until 4 p.m. Please call Outdoor Recreation for more information.

Enjoy a morning of fun and relaxation on September 13 with the Hickam Outdoor Adventure staff as you try your skills at bringing in the big one. You never know what you might catch. A wide variety of reef fish and a token shark or two are ready to put you to the test. Catch and release or take them home for dinner. This trip is great for beginners as well as the seasoned veteran. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 11:30 a.m. Cost is $35 per person. We’ll provide the fishing gear, bait and boat, along with some instructions, and you provide the luck!

Zip around the harbor on a Banana Boat Bounce around the Hickam Harbor on one of our Banana Boats. This activity is a blast! One of our professional lifeguards will take you out and bounce you around the harbor. Strap on a life jacket and helmet and hold on tight! This is one activity not to be missed. Sign up on-site September 7 from 2–5 p.m. Cost is $5 per person for 15 minutes.

Learn how to sail on the open water “Start Sailing Right” will teach you the ins and outs of sailing. This course is taught by a certified U.S. Sailing instructor. Once you are certified, you will have the opportunity to use three of Hickam Harbor’s sailboats; the Laser 12, Catalina 14 and the Rhodes 19. Class consists of four hours of classroom theory, 11 hours of on-the-water group instruction and semi-private sailing instruction. The $167 fee includes textbook and course materials, boat rental and instruction. This course is offered September 9, 12, 16 and 19; Wednesdays 6–8 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

Ladies-only surf lessons offered! Hickam Harbor now offers surf lessons for women only. Come out and get professional instructions from our own Outdoor Adventure staff. Let the trained staff at Hickam Harbor make your surfing experience a pleasant, enjoyable and successful one. We will school you in the history, wave science, etiquette and technique. We will also get you on the right board, provide a short boat ride to “the line up” and give you personal instruction in excellent uncrowded waves. Participants must be able to swim without a life jacket. Don’t miss out on this righteous opportunity on September 27 from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. for only $35.

Learn how to surf before leaving Hawaii Did you know that Hawaii is the surf capital of the world? Learn how to surf right here at Hickam Harbor. Our professional instructors will teach you the basics from standing, paddling, catching waves and angling. Surfing is a fun and exciting sport and you couldn’t ask for a better location. This righteous 3-hour lesson is only $35 and is exactly what you need to

Sea kayak out to Chinaman’s Hat This trip is a short paddle out to one of Hawaii’s landmark locations. Come with us and explore the small island and possibly catch a wave or two. Pull your kayaks onto shore and enjoy swimming and snorkeling if you’re so inclined. If you are feeling up to it, tighten the straps on your sandals and hike to the top for some awesome views of Kaneohe Bay. This trip is moderate in the level of difficulty. This trip will be offered on September 26 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and costs only $34 per person.

Why buy when you can rent? The Hickam Outdoor Recreation has a new facility full of rental items. From paddle boards and snorkels to camping gear and party items. You can rent items for the day, the weekend or for a whole week. Most items are not available for reservation; they are

rented on a first come, first serve basis. The rental office is located in building 1760 off Kuntz Avenue, right next to the ITT office. Call 449-6870 for more information, or just stop by and check it out!

After school youth sailing program This monthly membership is designed for the aspiring Junior Sailor and will teach sailing to students ages 8–15. This is a fun and interactive way to learn the basics of sailing. During the month, our instructors will teach tacking, rigging, jibbing, capsize recovery and many other sailing techniques. This course runs every Monday and Wednesday in September, except for Labor Day. Cost is $65 per person for the month. Please contact Outdoor Recreation for sailing times.

Go mountain biking in Kailua Come ride on some local mountain bike trails around Olamana on September 27 from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. This trip is for those who have little to moderate mountain biking experience. Our guides will take you

Wine lovers tour The next wine tasting event will be on Saturday, September 26 from 6–8:30 p.m. This month’s theme is “Pinots From Around the World.” Tour includes round-trip transportation from Hickam, generous wine and beer samples, a FREE wine glass, door prizes and a military discount on all wine sales. ‘Touch Japan’ tour This customized tour takes you deep into the cultural heart of Japan. Meet local fishermen, interact with school children and bring home memories like no other tour. There will also be wine tastings, tea ceremonies, hot springs and more! Warm up those legs for the fourth annual Hickam duathlon on Saturday, September 26 at 7 a.m. at the Hickam Harbor parking lot. Race check-in is at 6 a.m. The race consists of a 5k run, a 25k bike ride, followed by another 5k run. Registration is now through September 10, or September 11–20 for late registration. There will be a race briefing on Friday, September 19 at 3 p.m. at the Fitness Center gymnasium. This race is open to all authorized base users and their guests. Cost is $25 per person with a T-shirt and $15 per person without a T-shirt. There will be no T-shirt given for late registration and the cost will be $20 per person. Basic strength training at the Fitness Center The Fitness & Sports Center offers basic strength training classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2–3 p.m. Strength training is very beneficial to your overall health and

will help you increase your metabolic rate, improve stability, increase and restore bone density, decrease risk of coronary disease, increase lean muscle mass and muscle strength and help you prevent injury. If you need to get acquainted with the equipment, orientation is available. These classes are FREE and open to all authorized Fitness Center users. Melt away your stress with a massage Did you know that the Hickam Fitness & Sports Center offers a wide variety of spa treatments? Some of these amazing services include ionic detox foot bath, deep tissue sports massage, facial treatments and body scrubs. Group Fitness CLASSES All classes are FREE to authorized users. Class minimum participation is 3 persons. Classes are held at Hickam Fitness Center, Bldg. 1120 and Spin Center, Bldg. 1113. No classes are held on Federal holidays and Family days unless otherwise noted. FIP is limited to active duty Air Force members only and held Monday–Friday. Here are some of the exciting classes offered: Power pump—Using tools such as dumbbells, body bars, resistance tubing and your own body weight, you work every major muscle group at least two different ways. In addition, various exercises may be added that target minor muscle groups and emphasize balance and core strength. This class accommodates all fitness levels. Athletic Core Conditioning—A total body workout geared towards improving overall core conditioning, strength and function. This class is designed around the concept that a strong and stable core will allow the limbs of the body to do their job better and that optimal postural alignment is the foundation for functional training. Appropriate for all fitness levels. Step Challenge—This class features a variety of challenging step combinations and movements onto and from an adjustable step platform. The participant should have basic knowledge of step terminology. These classes accommodate the intermediate and advanced student with modifications available for the beginner. Patriot’s week at Ke’alohi and Mamala Bay golf courses Patriot’s week is a way to give back to those who have given everything. Golfers nationwide will be asked to donate a minimum of $1 to raise funds for the Folds of Honor Foundation from September 1–6. This organization provides educational scholarships to families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty. Best ball Columbus Day celebration tournament This 36-hole tournament will be held October 10 and 12 at Mamala Bay Golf Course. Format is stroke play. Prizes will be awarded for gross and net score in the various team flights. Number of flights will be determined based on the number of entries. Safety classes at the Wood Hobby Shop A safety class is required to use the Wood Hobby Shop. This class will teach you how to safely use all of the machinery. Safety classes are held on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. Sign up is not required, but encouraged. There is a $15 fee for this informative class. It’s also handy for all those do-it-yourselfers at home. The Ceramics Shop welcomes a new face The Ceramics Shop has a new artisan: Dorothy Dean. She is an award-winning photographer currently residing in Honolulu. She received her BASA from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Dean is working on many exciting projects around the ceramics studio and developing new photography classes for the photo lab. She is also an accomplished fiber artist providing demonstrations in knitting and spinning wheel at the Hawaii State Art Museum and Honolulu Academy of Arts. Air Force Arts & Crafts Gallery Showcase It’s time again to rev up your creative engines for the Air Force Gallery Showcase! All submissions selected at the base level will be forwarded on to the respective MAJCOMs, who will choose entries to be forwarded on to HQ AFSVA. Individuals whose entries are selected for the showcase will receive recognition from HQ AFSVA, which includes a commemorative medallion and DVD of the Gallery Showcase. There will be two categories with three age divisions within each category. The categories are Artist/Craftsman and Photography. Entry forms are available at the Arts & Crafts Center. Entries will be accepted August 1–September 30, 2009. Community Center’s Live Green Program The Air Force Services Family Members Program is excited to introduce a new community center program called Live Green. This program is designed to increase awareness of our installation’s actions on the environment and how we can all do things to benefit our base. There are many programs that have been established to benefit our environment, ranging from recycling programs to cleaning up parks. New initiatives and great ideas are being established every day in order to go green. The Makai Recreation Center will be participating in the Live Green program. During the month of

Tailgate sales for September Tailgate sales will be held at the Burger King parking lot on Saturday, September 5 from 7–10 a.m. Cost is $10 per stall and can be purchased at the MRC. There will be no tailgate sales on September 19 due to the Air Show.

You can drop off the following items at the MRC, Monday–Friday from 9 a.m.–7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. We will have containers marked for the following items: • Phone books, magazines, catalogs, paperback books • VHS tapes, floppy disks, CDs • Cell phones, disposable single-use cameras • Wire hangers • Cardboard, holiday cards • Eyeglasses • Sneakers • Unwanted household goods (small appliances, tableware, clothing, furniture, toys, sports equipment, books, etc.) The MRC will also host a “Clean Out Your Garage” day swap meet on October 11 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. This will be a FREE event and tables are limited.

In addition to helping this worthwhile effort, special eco-friendly bags with the Live Green and Community Center logos will be available when you drop off your items. These bags have been provided through a donation to the Air Force by Mark Dunning Industries. MDI has been cleaning up military communities for nearly three decades. They offer a wide variety of services, such as solid waste collection and disposal, waste reduction, recycling and more. Bag quantities are limited and will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. So clean out those closets and junk drawers and make recycling a way of life and Live Green!

Visions of the Universe niverse Four Centuries of Discovery Traveling Exhibit makes a stop at the Hickam Library Hickam Library is one of 40 libraries nationwide, which was selected to host a national tour of “Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery,” a traveling exhibition to mark the International year of Astronomy in 2009. The exhibit will be available for viewing from July 7 to September 5, 2009. On display will be awesome photography displays taken by the Hubble Telescope and include such outer space topics as Black Holes, the Big Bang Theory, Blueshift, Neutron Star, White Dwarf and many more. Don’t miss this opportunity to see this outstanding exhibit while it is here in Hawaii.

Join Youth Programs in celebrating our wonderful members and helping us find new ones. Each night will be filled with games, fun and a small snack. The cost is only $3 for members and $10 for non-members. Membership nights are from 6–8 p.m. All participants must be registered by the Friday prior to the event. Here are the dates for upcoming membership nights: November 6 is “Games Night” in building 1335; February 5 is “Fitness Fun” in building B1339; May 7 is “Sports Night” in building 1335; August 6 is “Pool Party” at Pool 2.

Youth program membership sign-up The new membership year starts October 1, 2009 and is good until September 30, 2010. Membership is for youth ages 5–18. The cost for one year is $36. Benefits of membership include discounted rates on youth sports registration, youth fitness classes and youth programs activities throughout the year. Membership also allows youth ages 10–18 to participate in Teen Center daily

activities and Boys & Girls Club programs and clubs. You can sign up for membership at any Youth Programs facilities.

BGCA Day for Kids Join the Youth Programs staff on Saturday, September 12 in building 1335 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. to celebrate kids! This family event reinforces the commitment to youth and provides an opportunity to remind them how important they are. Games, crafts, prizes and refreshments will be provided.

Make a difference in your community with Teen Center organizations The Hickam Pre-Teen/Teen Center has a wide variety of exciting clubs to participate in. Here’s a rundown: Art Club Young artists will learn about the different artistic techniques in fine arts that are out there. Examples of these techniques include painting, sketching and print-making. Artworks may be entered in the BGCA Fine Arts contest. Art Club meets on Tuesdays from 4–5 p.m. and is for ages 10–18.

Hickam FCC provides FREE child care through Expanded Child Care program One of the hallmarks of the Expanded Child Care (ECC) program is its ability to tailor short-term care to the unique needs of children and their families in contracted Family Child Care homes. The ECC program includes the following: EDC Program—The EDC program provides child care for military members as they perform their mission during contingency or high tempo operations. It is designed to help families who have to work longer hours, evenings, overnight, weekends, and/or are experiencing a temporary shift change. Returning Home Care (RHC)—The RHC program provides child care to eligible members returning from 30-days or more deployment in support of contingency operations as well as those returning for their two-week Rest and Recuperation (R&R) leave. Home Community Care (HCC)—The HCC program is designed to provide care for ANG/AFR members during their scheduled UTA (drill) weekend. To be eligible for any Expanded Child Care (ECC) program, at least one parent must be a member of the U.S. Military Service: Active Duty, Reserve or Guard member in activated status, dual employed (military married to civilian) or DoD civilian employee assigned to or working on the installation. First priority is given to parents whose children are currently enrolled in the Air Force Child Development, School-Age and/or Family Child Care programs. Call 448-1988 for more information.

Climb (New Program) Interested in hiking the same trails that ancient Hawaiians have hiked? Explore Hawaii on foot and climb mountains that were once volcanoes. Learn about native plants and birds, dip your toes in streams and waterfalls. Join “Climb,” a Saturday hiking club for youth ages 10–18. Call 448-2296 for more information. Club Life Members will become active in exploring life through fun activities, inspired by the LIFE board game. Learn to be adventurous and have fun, help improve our environment, feel good about volunteering and earn the respect of your community by becoming active in your community. Keystone Club This club is the key for teens ages 13–18 who want to maximize their potential as future leaders and receive recognition from Air Force leaders, national, community and private organizations. Teens have the opportunity to perform services in the community while experiencing personal development, education, and social recreation. The Keystone Club meets every Monday at 5 p.m. Photography Club The Photography Club teaches the basics behind great photography. Participants will learn how to put together a portfolio and build their own photo shoot. Photos may be entered for BGCA and 4-H photography contests. The Photography Club meets each Tuesday from 5–6 p.m. This club is for ages 10–18.

Torch Club Torch Clubs are chartered, small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 10–13. Members learn to elect officers and work together to plan and implement activities in four areas: service to club and community, education, health and fitness and social recreation. The Torch Club meets each Wednesday from 3–4 p.m. Y.E.S. (Youth Employment Skills) Y.E.S. is an on-base, youth volunteer program designed for high school aged dependents of active-duty Air Force members, providing students an opportunity to learn valuable skills. Students accumulate volunteer hours during their four years of high school and can earn up to $1,000 towards future vocational, technical or academic endeavors. Application forms are available at the Hickam Teen Center.
