Ni′ihau - The Forbidden Island
re you looking for a unique travel experience at an affordable cost? Look no further than our own Hawaiian Islands chain. Until recently, the island of Ni′ihau, nicknamed the Forbidden Island, has been closed to visitors. Landings were granted only by special permission of the Robinson Family, the sole owners of Hawaii’s only private island. Read the below quote by one of our recent customers: “Ni′ihau and Kauai....Two islands on one trip made this adventure very memorable. (We) were really

pleased with the ITT Staff, Ni′ihau Helicopter tours and the Aloha Beach Resort hotel personnel. The opportunity to make the trip to the “forbidden island” has been one of our favorite adventures of all time. The extensive low level helicopter tour of the entire Ni′ihau island was my favorite part of the weekend. The many hidden treasures of Ni′ihau were quite the surprise. Kauai lived up to it’s name, “the Garden Isle”. The canyon, the falls, the beaches, the scenery...it was gorgeous. This is one trip, I would
consider going on again. “It is well worth the price.” Nathan Carline, SMSgt AMC 735 AMS/CCF. The 15th Services Information, Tickets and Travel (ITT) office is offering a tour to Ni′ihau on Jan. 24. $590 a person includes roundtrip airport shuttle, round-trip airfare to Kauai, rental car (min. 2 people per car) and the four hour Ni′ihau experience. A second tour to Ni′ihau/Kauai is scheduled for March 7 and 8. A two Island tour for $790. You’ll be taken to Ni′ihau via helicopter from Kauai’s Port Allen airport. After an aerial tour of the island, you’ll be dropped off on a secluded beach full of seashells and unspoiled nature. Besides exploring Ni′ihau, you’ll also have time with your rental car to cruise the Garden Isle of Kauai. Due to limited helicopter seats, this tour is limited to 10-12 people. Infants are not allowed on this tour. Call the ITT office at 448--2295 for more information and reservations.

Whale watching is back!
Get ready to book your whale watching adventure in the coming winter months with your ITT office. The best viewing months tend to be between January and March. Although Lahaina Maui hosts some of the best close-up viewings, each island receives plenty of the gentle giants in the respective oceans. To Hawaiians, the whale is a representation of the Hawaiian God Kanaloa - the God of animals in the ocean. Humpback whales (na kohola) are found in all oceans, although they generally prefer near shore and nearisland habitats for both feeding and breeding.
The reason for the abundance of North Pacific Humpback whales during this time of year is that they migrate to the Hawaiian Islands to calve in the relatively warm and protected waters. The round-trip distance they travel during this annual migration is approximately 4,000 miles, one of the longest migration distances of any animal species. Near the islands, the whales devote most of their time to mating and giving birth to their calves. This also means that you have a really good chance to see some baby whales too! The bay in Lahaina offers the perfect environment for the whales due to the natural triangle haven created by the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai. While visiting the islands, kohola have become renowned for their various acrobatic displays. Look for upcoming tours to Maui, Kauai/Niihau and here on Oahu starting in January 2009.
Alaska, where animals outnumber people! Up north there’s a land without fences. Animals outnumber people, sunlight shines at midnight and nature is king. Life is different. It is beauty beyond description. The Great Frontier boasts pristine landscapes and a coastline that is truly one of the most enthralling waterways in the world. Beyond Alaska’s fortress-like glacier walls lie scenic ports of call, treasured national parks and majestic wildlife. Departures available from May through September from Vancouver or Seattle with Princess Cruises or Holland America cruise lines. *$649 fare is an inside cabin based
upon availability at time of reservation. $25 shipboard credit only available on Princess Cruises. Choose the Inside Passage Route, Glacier Bay or both! Hurry, these Alaska cruises sell out fast every year! Visit the Hickam ITT office at Bldg. 1760, next to the Shoppette on Kuntz Ave, or call 4482295 for more details. Fares are per person, based on double occupancy, and are subject to change and availability. Fuel Supplement, Government Fees & Taxes are additional and subject to change. ave you seen people that look like they’re walking out on the water lately? They’re actually standing on surfboards and paddling in what has been somewhat of a revival of the sport recently. According to reports, the craze was revived on the California coast and is being taken seriously here too. Stand up paddle boarders cruise the calm waters just off shore or in bays and can add to their fun by actually surfing the waves too. Stand up paddle boarding is done on a large long board and according to 15th Services own Teddy Fabella who works as a lifeguard at Hickam Harbor, the sport is popular as an

The Hickam Wood Shop ... Another of those best kept secrets? Working with wood is a time honored tradition. There’s something about creating something in wood with your own hands. And although the Hickam Wood Shop is one of the premiere shops of its kind in PACAF, it’s one of those facilities that seems to be easily overlooked. But don’t be fooled. The Hickam Wood Shop has the know-how, equipment and space for all your fine wood working projects from a simple box to up-scale furniture. At the Wood Shop, you can learn new wood working skills or sharpen old ones. Wood working equipment includes table saws, panel saw, lathe, jointer, planer, drill press, band saw, finishing sander, radial arm saw, router and miter chop saw plus all the hand tools you’ll need to complete your project. Wood Shop staff members are available for consultation about your project or can lend a hand when you need it. The Shop also has a limited resale inventory of hardwoods and plywoods for purchase. In addition, the staff accepts custom orders for utility ware, signs, gift items, flag boxes and plaques. But how can I use this facility, you ask? The Hickam
it safely. The class is held each Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and the cost is $15. “Woodworking is a blast,” said Sonya Stanchfield, who has used the shop for repairing and refinishing antique furniture. “They have every tool I’ve ever needed and the staff has been great in giving me
pointers on how to do things,” she concluded. The Hickam Wood Shop is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 4493592 for more information.
Wood Shop is located on Vickers Avenue in Bldg 1029 and is just west of the PACAF Headquarters complex. To use the facility and its maze of expert equipment, you must first take and pass a safety class. This class will familiarize you with the equipment and how to use isq 17
