DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES SYMPTOMS - STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN Review the system description and operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column Description and Operation. Visual/Physical Inspection  

Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the steering wheel and column. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.

Symptoms List

Refer to a symptom diagnostic procedure from the following list in order to diagnose the symptom:      

Steering Column Tilt Function Inoperative Ignition Key Cannot Be Removed from the Ignition Lock Cylinder Ignition Key Cannot Turn or Sticks in Any Position Noise in Steering Column High Shift Effort Looseness in Steering Column

HEATED STEERING WHEEL INDICATOR MALFUNCTION Diagnostic Aids 

If the cruise control indicator works but the heated steering wheel indicator does not, then the problem does not lie with the BCM or with the LED signal circuit.

The heated steering wheel will remain ON if the heated steering wheel switch is disconnected while the heated steering wheel is ON.

1. Remove the SIR inflator module from the steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement 2. Turn the ignition ON, and press the heated steering wheel switch once. 3. Disconnect the heated steering wheel switch. It is a grey connector on the left side of the steering wheel. 4. Measure the voltage on the heated steering wheel switch LED control circuit with a DMM connected to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing .

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Is battery voltage present on the circuit when the heater is ON? Measure the voltage and frequency on the heated steering wheel switch LED signal circuit, with a DMM connected to B+. Refer to Circuit Testing . Does the DMM measure 8.0 - 12.6 volts, and 130 Hz frequency, between the LED signal circuit and B+? Test the heated steering switch LED control circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing . Did you find and correct the condition? Test the heated steering switch LED signal circuit for an open or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing . Did you find and correct the condition? Inspect for poor connections at the heated steering wheel switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector

Inspect weak or broken shoe lock spring. Is the shoe lock spring weak or broken? Inspect the pivot pins for binding. Are the pivot pins binding? Inspect for a weak or broken wheel tilt spring. Is the wheel tilt spring weak or broken? Inspect the steering column wiring harness for tightness. Is the steering column wiring harness too tight? Replace the Steering Column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement. Is the repair complete? Replace the pivot pins. Refer to Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Replacement. Is the repair complete? Replace the tilt spring. 1. Remove the SIR inflator module from the steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement 2. Disconnect the heated steering wheel switch connector. It is a grey connector on the left side of the steering wheel. 3. Test the switch for continuity, making sure that the switch is pressed as you test, between the switch signal side and the ground side of the switch. Refer to Circuit Testing .

Did you find continuity in the switch? 1. Disconnect the green connector at the bottom of the steering wheel (C227). 2. Test the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the heated steering wheel module for an open or short to ground. If the circuit is open, Inspect both the 7.5 A inline fuse near the SIR coil and the 15 A HTD STR/WHL fuse in the underhood fuse block. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

1. Disconnect the heated steering wheel connector from the heated steering wheel 1.58-2.86 control module. It is a black connector on ohms (leather the top right of the steering wheel. wheel) 2. Measure the resistance of the heated 1.69-2.93 steering wheel heating element. ohms (wood wheel) Does the resistance measure within the specified range? IMPORTANT: The thermistor resistance varies according to the temperature. Therefore, if you measure the resistance while the wheel is still warm,

looseness. Are the steering column mounting brackets loose? Verify that the steering column bracket capsule is not sheared. Is the steering column bracket capsule sheared? Inspect the support screws for looseness. Are the support screws loose? Inspect the intermediate shaft for worn joints or looseness. Is the intermediate joint worn or loose? Inspect the tilt head, support and pivot pins for looseness. Are there any loose components? Tighten the brackets to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications. in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly. 1. Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole. IMPORTANT: Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft components in order to assure proper installation. 2. Mark the relationships of the following components:  Mark the relationship of the bolt and clamp at both ends of the upper intermediate shaft.  Mark the relationship of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft.

Remove the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt and nut. Separate the upper intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft. Remove the intermediate shaft seal retaining nuts. Remove the intermediate seal.

Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column. 9. Remove the upper intermediate shaft from the vehicle from under the hood. Installation Procedure

IMPORTANT: If you are installing the same shaft, align the marks and the relationship of the bolt and clamp made during the removal procedure. 1. Install the lower end of the upper intermediate shaft through the bulkhead. 2. Connect the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column. NOTE:

IMPORTANT: The intermediate shaft pinch bolt is held by a keeper and not to be tightened. To obtain proper torque, tighten at the intermediate shaft nut.

Tighten: Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch nut to 62 N.m (46 lb ft). 4. Position the intermediate shaft seal over the shaft. 5. Install the intermediate shaft seal nuts. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 3 N.m (27 lb in). 6. Connect the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft.
