[ MEMORY & REVOLUTION ] Ⅱ . BACK TO 1980s There is a close-knit connection between urban form and urban memory. However, nowadays the large-scale urban transformation and frequent renewal not only make the urban structure lose the function of recording the real history, but also bring multifarious memory cognition and identity problems to the urban communities. Tangible cities arise in the ever-updated skyline, invisible cities consist in people’s lives, yet their sense of belonging and dreams are all in the invisible cities.

A Interaction Project with Birds in The Baita Temple Area

Today, if we intend to stay in this bit overburdened city, refined by architects in existing state is necessary, which in an effort to preserve the stories and humanistic feelings of the city. By means of architectural design, the city's "visible" and "invisible", the "past" and the "future" are linked together to create a future city full of stories.

â… . ART PRISON Museum Design in Favignana

Location: Favignana,Italy Date : 2015 Summer Individual Work Instructor:Bowen Ni

This project is about how to convert the castle into an important art exchange center for the benefit of the whole society. To visit an ancient castle the location and structure of which remains unaffected and wild are more than pleasant, for people can fully feel and enjoy the nature and art at the same time. To make better use of the space, artists may create and exhibit their works there, or communicate with others about creativity, beauty, and the Utopia in their mind. Collectors and amateurs from all over the world meet each other in the castle, immersing themselves fully into the fragrance of culture and nature. Humankind, although being independent since the moment of birth and getting attracted by the special charm of loneliness for their whole lives, has also been driven by the desire to embrace others, find companions, and become a part of the crowd by breaking through all kinds of barriers. That process can be translated into space language in this program. Artists can either isolate themselves in the studio that is located at the top of the castle, enjoying the broad view of the sea, or exchange their idea and get integrated into the crowd at the ground floor plan: Art Exchange Zone and at the second-floor : Exhibition Zone. Whether artists or visitors, anyone can find a spiritual shelter here.

Interactive Space : Human with Human

The exhibition area that highlights the sense of alienation and the distance between individuals starts from the entrance. Comprised of independent and closed small sections, semi-closed sections and stepping space that are interconnected with each other, visitors can enjoy the works and get free from distractions.

The second-floor plan is designed to promote interpersonal communication with various design methods. The height of the wall, windows, and space makes it possible to make eye contact and to initiate verbal and spiritual communication, while the private sections create more sense of belonging.

Intergrative Space: Group with Group

Section Analysis

This floor is where art salons and seminars can be held. This area is divided into two sections, while the first is called communication space and the second is surrounded by a wall for public use. Participants would feel free to go anywhere and exchange their idea with anyone, thus to reflect the mobility and gathering of groups.

The castle is located at the top of the mountain that can only be reached through zigzag stone steps; standing at the roof, one can overlook the whole island. Some parts of the internal space are mainly connected with circle long slopes, through which visitors may feel the transformation from loneliness to collectivity while walking down the third floor functional space.

What the three-floor space connected by a ramp emphasizes is that, the difference between people's heart changes in different spaces and their interactions with themselves and others. From the search for self-space and blending with others, to integrate with the public, create a sense of collective and seek a sense of identity. The whole process does not lose the freedom and sense of individuality as an individual. As a renovation project, the viewer can feel the local historical culture and feelings in the course of walking by retaining its original wall material. And this abandoned prison castle is added artistic value to its original historical value and becomes the artistic representative land in the district.

â…Ą. BACK TO 1980s A Interaction Project with Birds in The Baita Temple Area

Location: Baita Temple, Beijing Date : 2016 Summer Individual Work Instructor:Fan Lu

Baita Temple, located at the Xicheng District of Beijing and built in Yuan Dynasty, is the oldest and largest existing lamaist pagoda in China. Although in this key conservation are still residing many citizens and standing traditional Chinese quads, as required by city development and renewal, and the compliance with relevant regulations, a large number of dwellings have been transformed or demolished, as well as vegetable markets and flower & bird markets. Some may still recall the tradition of raising pigeons and precious birds several years ago when those creatures got released at sunrise and returned home at sunset. Nowadays, however with bungalows replaced gradually by skyscrapers, it has been almost impossible to admire that scene any more. This program is aimed to revive the culture by providing the local with more space not only to entertain themselves but also to attract travelers who have an interest in ‘birdwatching’ as well. A new system is built at the top of the quad-district together with a series of structures such as new bird nets at yards, watchtowers and birdwatching platforms at crossroads and important nodes, hereby to provide special space for bird raising and watching, and to vitalize the depressed Hutong area.

Living in the Hutong area, residents generally speaking can only rest at their own yards or along the narrow aisles, and only basic needs can get addressed, which is rather inconvenient especially for the elderly. The peculiar scarcity of public rest area has rendered it especially difficult to arrange various recreational activities.

The program will be carried out at Gongmenkou 1st Alley which most buildings are for dwelling purpose. As suggested by our research, families that are still raising pigeons may serve as nodes from which lounge bridges are extended to connect watchtowers and other facilities outside. While imposing no restrictions on residents’ ordinary life by building new structures over the roofs, the rest and entertainment area should to a large extent improve their living standard.

â…˘ . THE REBIRTH OF DAOWAI DISTRICT Seasonal Hotel Design in Harbin

Location: Daowai District,Harbin Date : 2017 Summer Group Work Instructor:Fan Lu

In the 1920s, Daowai District was where Chinese resided in Harbin and where most baroque architectures are located in China. Appearing mainly of baroque style, those buildings also adopted the idea of traditional Chinese quad design, like two layers or multi-layer quads. The building elevation decorations, also at large of baroque style, mainly used traditional Chinese patterns. In recent years, Harbin government has been working on protection and renewal of Chinese baroque architectures, developing it into a new place of interest. While the external walls being preserved, the internal space is reset to satisfy the needs in different seasons. As a tourist city, Harbin is famous for its abundant tourist resources in summer and winter, which in turn requires the provision of services and setting up of landscape facilities accordingly. Moreover, the comprehensive hotel has also made available the access to exhibition zone and folk handicraft studios, so as to create a special cultural atmosphere. This program indicates a significant turning point for tourist attraction construction, and calls more for the combination between travelling and industrial industry.

â…Ł. RURAL RENAISSANCE City Commercial Complex Dsign in Urban Village

Location: Changping District,Beijing Date : 2017 Fall Group Work Instructor:Rui Li

Beijing, a world famous cosmopolis, has undergone an incredibly fast development. However, different from the speedy renewal and expansion of urban area, traditional countryside appears far more left behind and has found it impossible to keep in pace. As a result, those less developed areas have turned into villages in the city, for which the North Fourth Village is a typical example where although within 20 kilometers from the city center in distance and only carrying over 6,000 local residents, the external population is ten times larger than the native one and shabby dwellings are everywhere. This program is aimed to further the economic development in that area by building comprehensive shopping centers, better guaranteeing the ordinary life of residents there, and improving its core competitiveness. The original commercial systems of fair price can be removed to newly established platforms where, in accordance with the functional needs of the existing bases, commerce and afforestation are integrated closely, thus to leave enough dwelling space for citizens and to establish interconnected commercial complexes in the meantime. The essence of the plan is not to transform, but to preserve the special features of those villages in the city while reviving the economy there by developing commercial businesses. That will not only change the life style of the native who are living mainly on rents, but also attract visitors to consume, hereby to finally create a benign development circle.

With the expansion of urban area and the development of the society, to live on farming could no longer satisfy the basic needs of the native, which has motivated them to meet their ends by renting houses to migrants. Although geographically far from the city center, this area has still attracted a large amount of migrant workers with its low rent. In order to provide more dwellings and increase income, they choose to build new houses on the original ones.

Site Analysis

Concept and Strategy

Villages in the city can be quite problematic in light of the dense population, the low afforestation rate, and a lack of public space. When it is possible to satisfy all the basic needs in a single district however, whether food, residence or traffic, that means the village in the city has in a real sense developed into a mini city although with those disadvantages aforementioned. It has a unique set of rules of society operation, and new orders are needed to stimulate economic development in that area.

- 40 -

The newly built architectures contrast greatly with original ones in size and consumption standards. This program is rather to keep the social atmosphere of villages in the city instead of conversion it into another city, for the former is what the modern society is in lack of. New platforms are built above the houses, on which people may come into contact with a higher system through a hole on the roof, or via the elevators. The internal space of those buildings is similar to the architectural surface in appearance, for both are divided according to the polygon, and form up an organic space in the whole.
