ABOUT PORTFOLIO

CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 01

I have spent nearly four years in Harbin until I graduated from Northeast Forestry University. It is in these processes that I know more about this city of ice and snow than my hometown. This city has a short but complex history. It flourished in the colonial era of the last century. People from all over the world made this land unintentionally became the melting pot of different nationalities and cultures. Byzantine churches, old buildings of the Japanese army, streets with Baroque style, and Chinese-style houses coexist in the city. Modernized it still retains memories of different eras. Harbin used to be known as the Paris of the East, but with the historical changes, just like the fate of many industrial cities, it is no longer prosperous. However, the development of Harbin, which hinders the post-industrial era, is not just about the economic issues. Urban over-expansion, river pollution, and population loss are also interrelated, designers should pay attention to and think about them. My portfolio contains four projects in Harbin, which takes a four-year undergraduate study experience, re-examines, rethinks, rediscovers the strengths and shortcomings of each site, designs the artificial and natural beauty, and focuses on ecological and social issues. I see design as a process of discovery, thinking and solving problems, or the buffer zone between ideals and reality. Many bold ideas may never be realized because there are too many restrictions in reality, but as designers should not give up their sense of mission and responsibility. Instead, they should do everything they can to balance and alleviate the contradiction and eventually find the optimal solution.

Project date: summer 2018 Project area: 65ha Project location: Sun Island, Harbin, China The wetlands on Sun Island have always been important transit stations for migratory birds. The site has not been developed, but construction waste and tourist waste from the surrounding areas have polluted the water in the site and caused water blooms. On the one hand, the project combines local culture to design activities and sports places. On the other hand, the project focuses on ecology and it controls water blooms by farming fish and creating diverse habitats. The project attracts wild birds, fish and humans return to the wild and experience the life of ancestors and enjoy the fun of nature.

Jinyuan culture which belongs to Jurchens was born in ancient times. In that era, the city where the site was located has not yet become a city. This nation regarded equestrianism and archery as important traditions, and they built homes in the wild, lived a nomadic life, and they also respected and loved nature. However, with the end of the cold weapon era and the advent of industrial civilization, modern people have gradually forgotten these cultures and are far from nature.

TRAFFIC AND FUNCTION ANALYSIS

Considering the functions provided by the surrounding spaces, some new fuctions with local culture and history should be introduced into the site. These new activities will create a plain and natural atmosphere for the site.

Project date: winter 2016 Project area: 5ha Project location: Northeast Forestry University, Harbin, China The park is located in Northeast Forestry University. The school uses tree in its name and has been focusing on tree-related research for years. The inspiration comes from a 65-year-old tree which was standing there since the school was established. The design pattern comes from the annual ring and leaf vine of the tree. The park reminds people of the spirit of the University while students and teachers relax or study here.

In order to revitalize the site, old buildings were restored to public space for surrounding college students. The inspiration comes from the spring thaw of river. Harbin has long and cold winter because of its high latitude and limited plant species that adapt to the climate. However, it should not be overlooked that its unique ice and snow culture can also bring new inspiration and fun. Every spring, the frozen surface of the Songhua River flowing through the city begins to thaw, and it makes a loud and exciting sound because it means the end of the winter and the rebirth of everything. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, reborn from the frozen became the subject of design.

TRAFFIC ANALYSIS

This design focuses on plant and low impact development. In terms of plant selection, priority is given to the use of native plants and to ensure that the beauty of plants is visible in four seasons. Taking into account the climatic characteristics of rainy summer in Harbin, the plan uses permeable bricks to accelerate rainwater infiltration and use rainwater gardens on both sides of the road for stormwater management.
