After capturing the District 5 championship, CLIFTON-CLYDE had its season end abruptly with the loss to Quinter, finishing with a 7-2 record. Russ Steinbrock returns for his 23rd season (14473)and he welcomes back seven players with starting experience. Leading the way is senior Trent Long, who had 850 yards rushing and 481 passing with a combined 24 touchdowns. On defense is junior linebacker Oliver Nobert with his 57 tackles. All-State players Mitch Budke and Cal Kohlmeier are gone at continued on page 144

2022 Record: 5-4 / South Central Border League

Head Coach: Luke Greenwood (11th year, 76-29)

Assts.: Wyatt Williams, Monte Miller, Wayne Vineyard, Jack Deviney

Offense: Pistol Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Dalton Morrison, RB/LB/P, 6-0, 180, Sr.; CT Fahring, OL/NG, 6-1, 275, Sr.; Thomas DeViney, RB/WR/DB, 5-10, 145, Sr.; Carson Vineyard, RB/LB/KR, 5-9, 155, So.; Mac Harnden, WR, 6-0, 115, Jr.; Brody Bernsten, K, 5-10, 145, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Dalton Morrison, 122 car., 832 yds., 21 TDs

Passing: Thomas DeViney, 2-2, 19 yds. Receiving: Dalton Morrison, 10 rec., 145 yds., 1 TD Tackles: Dalton Morrison, 97 tkls. Sacks: Chance Shwein, 1

Ints.: Thomas DeViney, 3

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We should have good team speed. Still lack team size. Will have to replace five graduating seniors. Our numbers will be down this year as our incoming freshmen classes are pretty small. We will need to work extensively with our offensive line as we plan to run the ball more this year.”

Notes: Coach Luke Greenwood enters his 11th season coaching A&A with 76 wins leading the Titans and long-time Udall coach Wyatt Williams, Attica’s new 6-12 principal, joins the staff as D-coordinator. Greenwood also spent four seasons as head coach at Argonia, prior to the two teams entering a co-op. Williams led UHS to six or more wins several times between 2006 and 2019, including a 10-1 mark in 2014, but low numbers saw UHS win just four total games the past three years. Senior Dalton Morrison is back for A&A after he rushed for 832 yards and 21 TDs and led the D with 97 tackles last fall.

2022 Record: 8-3 / Northwest Kansas League

Head Coach: Aaron Sramek (2nd year, 8-3) Assts.: Mike Lankas, Mathew Withington

Offense: Double Tight I Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Braxton Dixson, QB/LB, 6-0, 165, Sr.; Pete Crouse, OL/LB, 6-0, 175, Sr.; Brayan Rodriguez, TE/DB, 5-10, Sr.; Ryan Sramek, RB/DB, 5-9, 155, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Ryan Sramek, 104 car., 746 yds., 12

TDs Passing: Braxton Dixson, 3-3, 45 yds., 1 TD Receiving: Braxton Dixson, 7 rec., 183 yds., 2 TDs

Tackles: Brayan Rodriguez, 100 tkls. Sacks: Braxton Dixson, 3 Ints.: Ryan Sramek, 5

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season:

“(Our goals are to) continue to build a program to be competitive every game and win consistently in the playoffs with the ultimate goal to win a state championship.”

Notes: In his first year as head coach Aaron Sramek led an experienced RCHS team to eight wins for the first time since an 8-2 mark in 2013. In the process the Buffs beat good teams from Wallace County (52-32), Quinter (46-28), and Hoxie (46-18), while dropping a close loss to Dighton (38-12). In the playoffs RCHS walloped a previously unbeaten Macksville squad 46-0 before falling to eventual 8-Man I champs Wichita County in the quarterfinals. Significant production is lost to graduation, including QB Drew Withington, RB Jayden Reed, and WR Brandon Chvatal, but several key players return including top defensive players Brayan Rodriguez, Braxton Dixson, and Ryan Sramek who tallied, 100, 95, and 60 tackles a season ago. Sramek is the top returning rusher and also posted five INTs on D.

BURDEN-CENTRAL

2022 Record: 5-4 / South Central Border League

Head Coach: Jeff Savage (2nd year, 5-4) Assistants: Tyler Lampert, Bruce Hafenstein

Offense: Spread Defense: 4-3

Returning starters: Jace Wunderlich, QB/FS, 5-7, 155, Sr.; Kaden Miller, OL/DL, 5-10, 160, Sr.; Boston Norris, OL/LB, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Xander Woods, RB/ DB, 5-9, 200, Sr.; Hunter O’Neil, OL/NG, 6-3, 220, Sr.; Brandon Johnson, RB, 5-6, 155, Sr.; Ben Long, WR/DB, 6-0, 150, Sr.; Miles Easley, TE/DE, 5-11, 170, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Jace Wunderlich, 132 car., 625 yds., 11

TDs Passing: Jace Wunderlich, 128-226, 1,700 yds., 28 TDs Receiving: Brandon Johnson, 25 rec., 225 yds., 2 TDs Tackles: Jace Wunderlich, 99 tkls.

Sacks: N/A Interceptions: Jace Wunderlich, 3 Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(This season) could be a special year if we get better luck in the injury department. We will be explosive on offense and will have great balance this year throwing and running the ball. We need to improve on defense and our physicality. With a veteran team with game experience we are hopeful that we can. If we can stay healthy it will take a very good football team to beat us.”

Notes: Jeff Savage got off to a solid start to the first year of his second stint leading a program he was the head coach of from 2009 to 2011. Savage – who was 23-9 in his three years leading the Raiders the first time around, and is now well into his fifth decade as a coach – used the arm and legs of quarterback Jace Wunderlich to lead the Raiders to a 5-4 season last fall. The senior will have his entire offensive line to work behind this season and the only weapon he’s missing on offense is graduated athlete Bradan Balman. Wunderlich is also the team’s top returner on D where he tallied 90-plus tackles for the second straight season. Under Savage the offense was explosive last fall, scoring at least 44 points in seven of nine games, but the defense struggled against the best teams on the schedule, especially in a threegame losing streak to close the season where the Raider D allowed at least 48 points in each contest. With eight returning starters the Raiders appear wellequipped to make some noise in 8-Man I this fall, but as with all small schools, staying injury free is key.

2022 Record: 0-8 / Heart of America League

Head Coach: Bryan Shamburg (4th year, 8-18)

Assts.: Jacob Ryan, Tracy Piepho, David Gillett

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-5

Returning starters: Jace Ohlson, TE/S, 6-0, 165, Sr.; Payge Rodenbeek, RB/QB/S, 5-10, 145, Jr.; Talan Pickering, E/S, 5-6, Sr.; Kian Wilson, QB/S, 6-0, Jr.; Cole Young, E/LB, 5-10, Sr.; Logan Rook, OL/DL, 6-1, Sr.; Gabe Davidson, RB/LB, 5-8, Sr.; Jonathan Golbek, OL/DL, 5-10, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Gabe Davidson, 14 car., 86 yds., 1 TD Passing: Kian Wilson, 85-180, 1,026 yds., 11 TDs Receiving: Talan Pickering, 16 rec., 252 yds., 1 TD

Tackles: Payge Rodenbeek, 65 tkls. Sacks: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We will have an experienced team this year with tons of talent. We have lots of speed on this team and look forward to getting them into space and watching them thrive! We will also look forward to having some size up front to run behind. This team is so full of talent and has the potential to do something special!”

Notes: Rarely does a team end a winless season with optimism, but outside of lopsided losses to Goessel in Week 1 and Clifton-Clyde in Week 8, the Bulldogs were incredibly competitive a season ago with none of those losses by 20 points or more. The offense was productive, scoring at least 14 points in all eight losses, but the defense was porous, allowing at least 30 in each game. The return of 1,000-yard passer Kian Wilson, and multiple offensive weapons for him to target, is likely to light up scoreboards this fall, and top returning tackler Payge Rodenbeek will be looked to for leadership as the D tries to improve.

2022 Record: 10-2 / Lyon County League

2022 Record: 6-3 / Heart of America League

Head Coach: Joe Roche (4th year, 14-15) Assts.: John Ludes, Brandon Toll, Dakota Came

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Marshall Johnson, QB/WR/DB, 6-1, 175, Sr.; Ryder Dent, RB/LB, 5-11, 170, Sr.; Joe Heichel, WR/DB, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Hunter Holmgren, WR/DB, 5-6, 140, Sr.; Melvin Lutes, WR/LB, 5-11, 160, Jr.; Kas Kramer, WR/DB, 5-8, 135, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Melvin Lutes, 34 car., 316 yds., 3 TDs Passing: Marshall Johnson, 19-40, 4 TDs Receiving: Kas Kramer, 27 rec., 346 yds., 2 TDs Tackles: Ryder Dent, 109 tkls. Ints.: Kas Kramer, 5

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We have high expectations for the 2023 season after returning a large majority of our 2022 team that lost in the first round of the playoffs. We have a wonderful group of seniors who have great attitudes, work hard all year, and are leaders for our younger players. Because of injuries last year, most of our players gained a ton of experience.”

Notes: Ell-Saline looked good in their first season back in 8-Man in 30 years, posting a 6-3 record last fall. The 2023 Cardinals will miss graduated quarterback Kade Wilson and running back Obed Ruiz, but plenty of experience returns to continue the upward trajectory for Joe Roche in his fourth year as head coach. Marshall Johnson got reps at QB due to injuries to Wilson and Melvin Lutes and Kas Kramer played key roles on offense as underclassmen and look to expand those roles this fall. Ryder Dent was one of the top tacklers in the state last fall as a junior and Kramer grabbed five interceptions in the secondary.

Burlingame

Head Coach: Jeff Slater (10th year, 75-20) Assts.: Eric West, Austin Masters

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Dane Winters, DB, Jr.; JD Tyson, QB/LB, Jr.; Timmy Roberts, DE, Jr.; Parker Haid, OL/DE, Jr.; Jose Arevalo, K, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Dane Winters, 58 car., 421 yds., 8 TDs Passing: JD Tyson, 11-22, 260 yds., 6 TDs Receiving: Dane Winters, 34 rec., 569 yds., 7 TDs Tackles: JD Tyson, 93 tkls. Sacks: Timmy Roberts, 2 Ints.: Dane Winters, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “This season we still have a gauntlet of a district and the way it’s shaping out, it may be tougher than last season. We will be vulnerable early with new guys stepping into much bigger roles, but we are hopeful by November we are in the mix for a playoff berth. I feel our district could prepare us for any team in the state, so it’s a matter of earning a top four spot. I am expecting some growing pains, but with a small senior class, I am hopeful it prepares us for success when it matters most.”

Notes: The Bearcats avenged their one-point loss to Lyndon in Week 8 last fall by knocking the Tigers out of the state quarterfinals, 39-16. A disappointing 48-0 loss to Little River in the semifinals would keep coach Jeff Slater from his first title game berth in his nine seasons at the helm, but the 10-win season was his team’s fourth double-digit win total in his career and the ninth straight finish above .500. Graduation took a heavy toll in the form of unanimous All-Lyon County League selections Colby Middelton, Matthew Heckman, and Tyler Lockwood, but a few pieces are back on the board to help round out Slater’s first decade as head coach in winning fashion. Dane Winters is back to lead the defensive backfield after tallying a pair of interceptions last fall and he’ll also be a key cog in the offense after rushing for 421 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensive end Timmy Roberts returns for his junior season after earning unanimous All-LCL honors a season ago. Parker Haid is back for his junior season after unanimous All-LCL honors on the offensive line as a sophomore. Junior JD Tyson will take the reins from Middleton at quarterback after six of his 11 completions last season went for touchdowns. He’s also the top returner on defense where he posted 93 tackles from his linebacker spot and earned unanimous All-LCL honors in the process. If Slater and his staff can develop depth in tough early season games with Lebo, Chase County, and Cair Paravel, then decisive district contests with Madison and Lyndon could be some of the best 8-Man games to watch in the 2023 season.

CEDAR VALE/DEXTER

2022 Record: 0-8 / South Central Border League

Head Coach: Cody Kahrs (2nd year, 0-8)

Assts.: Mike Henderson, Connor Stone

Offense: Ace Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Brayden Henderson, QB/LB, Sr.; Royce Potter, RB/DE, So.; Wyatt Martin, RB/ LB, So.; Logan Becker, C/LB, So.; Devonta Harris, G/DL, Sr.; Jaylen Harris, WR/S, So.; Staton Harrod, WR/CB, Jr.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We are a very young team and I wanna keep building off the progress we made at the end of last season. Goals (include) eliminating missed tackles, protecting the ball, and keeping offensive drives alive.”

Notes: An incredibly young Cedar Vale/Dexter squad went 0-8 last fall for the second straight season and will still be very young this fall with four returning starters entering just their sophomore season. Two experienced seniors and a junior also return. The offense found some tough-sledding last season starting the year twice getting shut out and closing the season with three straight scoreless performances. Second-year coach Cody Kahrs wants to continue working on the basics, play sound defense, and finish drives in the end zone this fall.

CLIFTON-CLYDE

2022 Record: 7-2 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: Russ Steinbrock (23rd year, 144-73)

Assistants: Rocky Fahey, Michael Cyr, Max Schwab Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Trent Long, RB/WR/QB/LB, 5-9, 165, Sr.; Payton Fahey, RB/WR/DB, 5-8, 145, Sr.; Drayden Reed, WR/TE/DE, 6-2, 155, Sr.; Oliver Nobert, OL/LB, 5-9, 165, Jr.; Jack Skocny, QB/DB, 6-2, 160, Jr.; Brodin Koch, OL/DB, LB, 5-8, 150, Jr.; Trextin Koch, RB/WR/DB/LB, 5-8, 150, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Trent Long, 113 car., 850 yds., 17 TDs Passing: Trent Long; 38-72, 481 yds., 7 TDs

Receiving: Drayden Reed, 15 rec., 251 yds., 6 TDs Tackles: Oliver Nobert, 57 tkls. Sacks: Oliver Nobert, Trent Long, Drayden Reed, 1 ea. Ints.: William Haas, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “The team and coaches are excited for the 2023 season. Last year didn’t end the way anyone was expecting it. We lost in the bracket play game versus a solid Quinter team, but it was a game we really felt we should have won. We bring back a solid core of skill players but will be looking to fill holes left in the offensive and defensive line from graduation. The schedule opens up with league power Hanover followed by league opponents Blue Valley and back-to-back state champions Axtell before jumping into district play.”

Notes: Veteran coach Russ Steinbrock will miss Kansas Damman and Seth LeClair up front after the duo graduated, and Maison Slater’s presence in the defensive secondary will be hard to replace, but seven players return with starting experience and should help the Eagles continue their winning ways. Versatile athlete Trent Long is back for his senior season and can play a variety of roles on both offense and defense. Drayden Reed is a tall drink of water at wide receiver and defensive end and Oliver Nobert is a sound tackler from his linebacker position. Ell-Saline could push the Eagles in district play, while Bennington and Lincoln teams should also be improved this season.

COTTONWOOD FALLS-CHASE CO.

2022 Record: 9-2 / Flint Hills League

Head Coach: N/A Assts.: Derick Budke

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Emiliano Zuniga, OL/DL, 6-0, 170, Sr.; Brock Griffin, RB/LB, 5-10,165, Sr.; Tucker Groh, WR/CB, 6-3,160, Sr.; Micah Cauthers, TE/LB, 6-1,180, Sr.; Wyatt Griffin, QB/CB, 6-3,160, So.; Luke Budke, WR/S, 5-9,155 , So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Brock Griffin, 61 car., 548 yds., 10 TDs Passing: Wyatt Griffin, 1-6, 14 yds. Receiving: Tucker Groh, 7 rec., 273 yds., 4 TDs Tackles: Brock Griffin, 117 tkls. Sacks: N/A Ints.: Tucker Groh, 5 Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: N/A

Notes: The Bulldogs graduate a good core group of seniors that went a combined 25-7 over the past three seasons. Graduation of All-State selections Mitch Budke and Cal Kohlmeier leaves the biggest holes after the duo provided highly productive performances on offense and defense throughout their high school careers. Several pieces do return to continue the recent run of success, but a new coach will take the reins as Brody VanDegrift has taken a career opportunity that requires travel and we’ll keep him from coaching this fall. At press time the Bulldogs had yet to hire VanDegrift’s replacement, but longtime football, wrestling, and track coach Derick Budke was one possible option. The Bulldogs will have great team speed this season led by senior Brock Griffin and his consistent 4.5 second 40-yard dash times over the summer. Wyatt Griffin, Luke Budke, and Micah Cauthers all consistently recorded times in the 4.7-4.8 second range as well. Brock Griffin is one of the top returning tacklers in all of 8-Man and will carry a heavier load on offense this fall as well. Sophomores Luke Budke and Wyatt Griffin will also see their offensive roles significantly expanded this season. Micah Cauthers is a standout wrestler and will be looked to for senior leadership while senior Tucker Groh is a walking touchdown who recorded five INTs with three of those returned for touchdowns, seven receptions with four TDs, and three kick returns, with two taken to the end zone.

2022 Record: 2-6 / Hi-Plains League

Head Coach: Larry Williams (1st year) Assts.: Kason Siemens, Marcus Irsik

Returning starters: Donavyn Rhodes, RB/LB/DE, 6-2, 215, Sr.; Max Gabino, OL/DL, 5-11, 200, Sr..; Calvin Shackelford, WR/DB, 5-10, 165, Jr.; Brendan Rich, OL/DL, 5-9, 220, Sr.; Braxon Nairn, OL/DL, 6-3, 235, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: N/A Passing: N/A Receiving: Donavyn Rhodes, 31 rec., 449 yds., 7 TDs Tackles: Donavyn Rhodes, 54 tkls. Sacks: Donavyn Rhodes

Outlook for the 2023 season: “Going into our second year in 8-Man we are looking to take a leap forward. We bring back depth up front as well as depth at the skill positions. Move-in senior Emilio Ibarra will run the offense at the quarterback position. We will pride ourselves on hard work and working to get better every week. We will have some freshman that will have to step up and take on vital roles.”

Notes: An experienced Elkhart squad entered their first year of 8-Man football with significant optimism, but went winless against teams from Kansas. The Wildcats’ only 2022 wins were against Boise City, Okla., in Week 1 and Springfield, Colo., in Week 3. Outside of games with 8-Man I champ Wichita County and 2021 champ Meade, EHS was competitive in the other four losses including a twopoint Week 7 loss to South Gray, 40-38. Coach Larry Williams enters his first year leading the Wildcats with some key returners and should get a boost with the addition of former Hutch-Central Christian AllHOPL QB Emilio Ibarra, also an all-league D-back.

Goessel

2022 Record: 4-5 / Wheat State League

Head Coach: Garrett Hiebert (13th year, 45-57)

Assistants: Luke Freeman, Rick Freeman

Offense: Spread Misdirection Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Kyle Valdois, OL, 5-8, 225, Sr.; Noah Schrag, DB, 5-7, 141, Sr.; Jake Flaming, RB/ DB, 5-8, 149, Sr.; Eli Bolden, OL/LB, 5-9, 157, Sr.; Klay Willis, TE, 5-6, 152, Sr.; Luke Stucky, OL/DL, 6-1, 235, Jr.; Adam Wonser, DL, 6-2, 328, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Noah Schrag, 25 car., 75 yds. Passing: Noah Schrag, 22-41, 243 yds., 6 TDs Receiving: Klay Willis, 5 rec., 52 yds. Tackles: Eli Bolden, 62 tkls. Sacks: N/A Ints.: Noah Schrag, 3

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Last year, we were bitten by the injury bug throughout the season and it impacted our ability to practice well, play JV games, and be cohesive from one Friday night to the next. We are looking forward to a fresh start at the beginning of this season. We’re returning quite a few kids with starting experience on both sides of the ball from last season. It will be important for us to continue developing team-wide leadership skills that serve to make the others around us better. We will continue to build an atmosphere where each player is invested in the success of each of their teammates just as much as they are invested in their own success.”

Notes: A tough 2022 schedule included lopsided losses to state powers Canton-Galva and Chase County in Weeks 2 and 3 and injuries kept the Bluebirds from building on the 8-3 season of 2021. After a three-game midseason win streak GHS closed the season on a three-game losing streak, but even then the Bluebirds were competitive dropping a 48-40 OT matchup with Moundridge in Week 6 and a 56-36 loss to an eight-win Wichita Independent team in Week 9. Jake Wiens and Grant Bryant are tough to replace, but five senior starters do return.

GREENSBURG-KIOWA COUNTY

2022

Record: 0-8 / SPIAA

Head Coach: Dave White (1st year) Assistants: Brady Thompson, Dustin Chartier

Offense: Midway Series Defense: 3-5

Returning starters: Brock Hassiepen, OL/DL, Sr.; Hunter Thompson, RB/LB, Sr.; Ethan Yost, OL/ DL, Sr.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: New coach Dave White had a simple goal for his first season leading the Kiowa County Mavericks, “improvement!” Key to that improvement is “learning blocking schemes and consistency” on offense, “tackling form” on defense, and an overall commitment to “fundamentals.”

Notes: After a winless season that ended with Kiowa County cancelling their final game against Elkhart the Mavericks welcome in veteran football coach Dave White who returns to the sidelines after more than a decade away from coaching. White inherits a team that was shut out in five games and scored more than six points just one time, that in the Week 7 6214 loss to Ness City. White has experience coaching football and basketball at Dighton, Greensburg, and Pratt High in a career that started in the 1980s. He plans to install the option based Midway Series offense that calls for frequent pulling along the offensive line and misdirection in the backfield. The offense was used to lead Midway-Denton to tremendous success in the 1980s and 1990s.

Good Luck to the Herington Railers in the Upcoming Season!

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “In order to have a successful season we will have to get the kids to believe in their capabilities and make a deep run in the playoffs.”

Notes: The Railers graduated a pair of first team All-Wheat State League selections from last season in Justin Wilder and Damion Woods, but return six experienced starters for the second year under coach Boyd Peterson. Seniors Tyus Becker and Kwinton Barlow-McKenna will lead the way for Herington after earning All-Wheat State League recognition last fall, while junior Cameron Svitak is the top returning rusher for the second season in a row.

2022 Record: 10-2 / Mid-Continent League

Head Coach: Travis Desbien (7th year, 40-20)

Assts.: Craig Amrein, Vince Walker

Offense: Spread Defense: 2-4

Returning starters: Aiden Amrein, QB/LB, 6-2, 180, Sr.; Jaden Nuss, RB/LB, 6-2, 175, Sr.; Dayton Stephen, TE/S, 6-0, 170, Jr.; Sylar Rohr, OL/LB, 5-8, 155, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Aiden Amrein, 98 car., 555 yds., 7 TDs Passing: Aiden Amrein, 105-167, 1,624 yds., 25 TDs

Receiving: Jaden Nuss, 20 rec., 347 yds., 4 TDs Tackles: Sylar Rohr, 109 tkls. Sacks: Sylar Rohr, 4 Ints.: Jaden Nuss, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We return four impact starters from last year who were crucial to our team success. We will be led by All-State senior dual-threat QB Aiden Amrein and sharing the backfield with him will be fellow senior leader Jaden Nuss. Juniors Dayton Stephen and Cameron Atkins look to fill the receiving void left by leading rusher/receiver Kaleb Atkins. The offensive line will feature new faces and starting roles will be decided upon through competition. Conner Dinkel leaves Hill City as the all-time leading tackler in school history and he will be tough to replace. Junior Sylar Rohr returns at middle linebacker after an all-league year, and will be joined by fellow defensive returning starters in Amrein, Nuss, and Stephen. The D-line positions will be filled through competition or potentially a rotation of athletes.”

Notes: After back-to-back 10-2 seasons and consecutive semifinal playoff berths the Ringnecks have some questionnaire marks gone to graduation, but seniors Aiden Amrein and Jaden Nuss return as two of the top players in 8-Man football and together with juniors Dayton Stephen and Sylar Rohar provide seventh-year coach Travis Desbien the building blocks to lay the foundation for another winner.

Hoxie

have a lot of quality players returning that received a lot of playing time last season. Our entire backfield will be back as well as a huge part of our line. We also have a lot of young football players on our roster that will need to step up and be ready to compete on Friday nights. We need to have strong leadership roles from our upperclassmen. We lost some key players to graduation and will need others to step up and fill that void. We will need to stay healthy if we want to compete for a district championship and a shot at the playoffs.”

Notes: Seven starters are back to help veteran coach Chris Haag try to improve on consecutive eight-win seasons. Junior Creyo Koop is back after rushing for 1,129 yards and 24 TDs last fall, and recording 129 tackles on defense. That followed a 1,272 yard, 24 TD freshman season where he also posting 66 tackles on D. Junior quarterback Trent Haag returns after passing for 756 yards and 14 TDs last fall while senior Christian Winter is back after posting seven sacks from his D-end position. Junior Maddex Moreno returns after 115 tackles and six sacks along with 425 yards and 10 TDs on offense. Seniors Holton McLean and Tyler Moore are back to lead the O-line. WEHS will be heavyfavorites in most of their regular season games this year and must stay healthy and focused for a tough opponent from District 2 in the final week of the season. It was Lyndon who edged Haag’s squad in a 42-39 thriller to end last season.

2022 Record: 7-3 / Mid-Continent League

Head Coach: Lance Baar (15th year, 95-45)

Assistants: JR Kaiser, Garrett Kaiser

Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Jonathan Mader LB/G, 5-9, 185, Sr.; Gavin Schippers, C/N, 5-9, 300, Sr.; Sam Watkins, TE/DE, 6-1, 190, Jr.; Braydon Scheetz, LB, 5-6, 165, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Duncan Bell, 49 car., 280 yds., 7 TDs

Passing: Duncan Bell, 15-27, 214 yds., 2 TDs

Receiving: Sam Watkins, 12 rec., 150 yds., 1 TD Tackles: Jonathan Mader, 114 tkls. Sacks: Sam Watkins, Jonathan Mader, 8 ea. Ints.: Jonathan Mader, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goal is to) be a top contender. Staying healthy is always key. We should have some kids playing new positions and getting them confident and comfortable in those new positions is a big key for us. To get those players to play fast and comfortable, as well as our first year starters. We will have a handful of kids steping into starting roles and bigger roles and making sure they are confident and comfortable and able to play fast will be key.”

Notes: A relatively young team will need to grow up quickly to keep the Indians’ run of three-straight winning seasons intac,t but four returning starters will fill a variety of roles, including possible position changes, and veteran Hoxie coach Lance Baar believe these changes should keep the Indians a contender. The duo of senior Jonathan Mader and junior Sam Watkins provides Baar a pair of really good defensive players that combined for an incredible 16 total sacks a season ago. Mader was also the top tackler for the Indians a season ago with 114 stops. The receiving corps saw significant losses to graduation in May, but Watkins recorded 12 catches for 150 yards and a score a season ago and is sure to play a bigger role in the offense this fall. Hoxie’s schedule will again include tough contests with Wichita County in Week 3, Hill City in Week 6, Quinter in Week 7, and rival Rawlins County in Week 8. If Baar can develop some depth and stay healthy his Hoxie squad should again be in position to challenge the Ringnecks, Bulldogs, and Buffaloes for District 6 supremacy.

LA CROSSE LEOTI-WICHITA COUNTY LINCOLN

2022 Record: 4-5 / Central Plains League

Head Coach: Jon Webster (15th year, 100-47)

Assts.: Jack Garcia, Kiel Simas

Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Caden Morgan, QB/DB, 6-2, 175, Sr.; Gage Burk, WR/DE, 6-2, 170, Sr.; Conner Barriger, OL/DL, 6-2, 185, Sr.; Alexander Heimstra, RB/LB, 5-10, 185, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Alexander Heimstra, 23 car., 183 yds., 2 TDs Passing: Caden Morgan, 103-196, 1,703 yds., 25 TDs Receiving: Gage Burk, 44 rec., 702 yds., 9 TDs Tackles: Gage Burk, 44 tkls. Sacks: Gage Burk, 5 Ints.: Caden Morgan, Lee Frederic Holopirek, 1 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We need to play more physical in every phase of the game. We must get off to strong starts and play complete games. Our three goals for this upcoming season are, limiting turnovers, competing at a high level, and playing as a team.”

Notes: It was a bit feast or famine for the Leopards last season. In four wins they scored at least 46 points each and pitched three shutouts. In three of the five losses they allowed at least 60 points each while scoring 14 or less, including twice getting shut out. In pivotal district contests with Trego and Ness City the Leopards were more productive, but couldn’t close the gap in 84-46 and 58-24 losses that left them in fourth place in District 7 and with a Week 9 matchup to eventual DI champs Wichita County, which they lost 66-0. La Crosse doesn’t return many seniors from last year’s squad to manage the 2023 schedule, but the ones they do are at the right spots. QB Caden Morgan returns for his third season as starter after passing for 1,700 yards with 25 TDs last fall. Classmate Gage Burk is back as his top target in the passing game after a 44 catch, 702 yard, nine TD season. Morgan and Burk will also be the top defenders for the Leopards at D-back and D-end respectively. Burk tallied 44 tackles and five sacks last fall while Morgan carded 39 stops and grabbed an INT. Senior Conner Barriger is the top returner on the O-line and also the second leading tackler with 43 stops – and tallied a team best five sacks. The defense could be improved after the Leopards graduated only two of the top 10 tacklers.

2022 Record: 13-0 / Hi-Plains League

Head Coach: Brant Douglas (6th year, 47-9)

Assistants: Haydon Parks, Bryce Nickelson

Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Khris Hermosillo, RB/DE, 5-9, 180, Jr.; Wyatt Gardner, WR/LB, 5-8, 150, Sr.; Christopher Michel, OL/DE, 6-2, 220, Sr.; Colton Harbin, TE/DB, 6-2, 170, Sr.; Brandon Price, C, 6-1, 220, Sr.; Jaun Tapia, NG, 6-1, 270, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Khris Hermosillo, 132 car., 1,251 yds., 23 TDs Passing: Wyatt Gardner, 1-1, 35 yds. Receiving: Colton Harbin, 24 rec., 478 yds., 9 TDs Tackles: Christopher Michel, 83 tkls. Sacks: Khris Hermosillo, 9.5 Ints.: Wyatt Gardner, Colton Harbin, 2 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “It is important for us to compete every game, improve each week, and build on the success of last season.”

Notes: The Indians were dominant in rolling to Wichita County’s first ever football title, scoring at least 54 points in an undefeated 13-win season and allowing more than 20 points just five times while holding eight opponents to 12 points or less, including five shutouts. The closest win was the 18-point 8-Man, Division I title game victory over Little River, 54-36, but no other game was closer than 28 points. The graduation of dual-threat quarterback Erhik Hermosillo and leading tackler Cordell Brown will sting a bit, but significant experience returns to help the Indians try to go backto-back. The second and third leading rushers, the top three receivers, and six of the top nine tacklers return. Junior Khris Hermosillo, Erhik’s “little” brother, will likely pick up any slack left by big brother’s graduation offensively while seniors Christopher Michel and Brandon Price return to anchor the offensive line. Michel and the younger Hermosillo will be a devastating combo on defense, and with seniors Wyatt Gardner, Colton Harbin, and junior Juan Tapia all back in key spots the defense could carry team early as new offensive roles are sorted out. It shouldn’t take any time for the offense to to find their groove though, as Harbin and Gardner – the latter who will take the reins at QB – provide versatile weapons to complement Khris Hermosillo.

2022 Record: 3-6 / Northern Plains League

Head Coach: Colby Hamel (1st year; 3rd overall, 9-8)

Assistants: Dayton Walter, Chase Klozenbucher, Zac Walter, Jason Hull

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Caleb Dotterer, RB/LB, 5-7, 158, Sr.; Josh Davied, OL/DL, 6-1, 244, Sr.; Logan Meier, QB/DE, 5-10, 175, Sr.; Branden Sinclar, LB, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Fallon Dyer, OL/DL, Sr.; Austin Baird, OL/DL, Sr.; Deegan Walters, TE/LB, Jr.; Levi Bates, WR/DB, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Logan Meier, 152 car., 708 yds., 7 TDs

Passing: Logan Meier, 49-123, 520 yds., 8 TDs

Receiving: Caleb Dotterer, 21 rec., 248 yds., 2

TDs Tackles: Branden Sinclair, 151 tkls. Sacks: Austin Baird, Logan Meier, Branden Sinclair, 2 ea. Interceptions: Caleb Dotterer, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goals are to) compete and win a playoff game, finish top two in our district, and win all home games. (Our keys to success include) staying healthy, learning from prior experience, and getting our athletes the ball.”

Notes: The Leopards went just 3-6 a season ago, but three of those wins were in district play leaving LHS third in 8-Man I, District 5. After five years, Dustin Patee is off to an assistant coaching job in El Dorado and former Rock Hills coach Colby Hamel takes over. A native of Lakin and former Fort Hays State offensive lineman, Hamel spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach and P.E. teacher in Nebraska after 6-3 and 3-5 finishes as head coach at Rock Hills in 2019 and 2020. He inherits a team with the weapons to see significant improvement this fall. An experienced group on offense includes talented four-year starting quarterback Logan Meier, versatile three-year starting running back Caleb Dotterer, three experienced offensive linemen and talented junior Levi Bates, who can play multiple skill positions. Dotterer and Meier are also back to lead the defense along with leading tackler Branden Sinclair, who recorded a whopping 151 tackles a season ago. Junior linebacker Deegan Walters appears poised for a good season as well. The secondary must get better and Dotterer and Bates, along with likley contributions from a talented freshmen class, should lead to improvement. Hamel has seen consistent participation in summer weights and anticipates more than 30 players out for football this fall. Clifton-Clyde and Ell-Saline are again favorites in district play, but a healthy Leopard team could be a factor as well.

Little River

2022 Record: 11-2 / Wheat State League

Head Coach: Kevin Ayers (6th year, 43-7; 24th overall, 201-46) Assistants: Chad Lafferty, Tyson Konen, Shane Cordell

Offense: Option Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Andrew Smith, TE/DB, 6-2, 175, Sr.; Carter Stansbury, OL/DL, 5-10, 180, Sr.; Ruxton Birdsong, OL, 6-0, 175, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Kyler Bergkamp, 5 car., 16 yds., Passing: None Receiving: Andrew Smith, 19 rec., 433 yds., 9 TDs Tackles: Andrew Smith, 54 tkls. Sacks: Andrew Smith, 5 Ints.: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “The graduation of eight solid seniors leaves some big holes to fill. Finding players to fill those roles will be a challenge, but we do have kids that are hungry for their turn. With only two seniors on the roster we will be young and inexperienced at a lot of positions. We look to see a lot of improvement as this team gains experience and moves through the season. We have had an exceptional summer and the boys are excited.”

Notes: After three consecutive state title game appearances, including a championship in 2020, and close losses the past two seasons, veteran 8-Man coach Kevin Ayers could have his biggest rebuilding job yet thanks to the graduation of incredible talent the past three Mays. Little River enters 2023 with a nearly clean slate. Only three starters return with virtually no offensive production. Andrew Smith provides the key bright spot for Ayers after he caught 19 passes for 433 yards and nine TDs from his tight end spot, and recorded 54 tackles with five sacks on defense. The offensive line returns two pieces to help usher in a new group of skill players, with senior Carter Stansbury and junior Ruxton Birdsong back up front. The schedule remains manageable as even a Week 1 matchup with Canton-Galva will present an Eagles team that also took heavy graduation losses. A Week 3 matchup with Ell-Saline is also a game to watch.

LYNDON MACKSVILLE MADISON/HAMILTON MANKATO-ROCK HILLS

2022 Record: 8-3 / Flint Hills League

Head Coach: Michael Massey (1st year) Assistants: Toby Baker, Scott Jones, Todd Griffin

Offense: Spread-Flex Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Jalen Massey, RB/S, 5-8, 170, Sr.; Casten Wirth, TE/LB, 6-3, 195, Sr.; Kaedin Massey, G/NG, 6-8, 280, Sr.; Caleb Anschutz, G/DE, 6-0, 210, Sr.; Ethen Ramey, WR/CB, 5-11, 155, Sr.; Daxten Miller, DE, 6-1, 175, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Jalen Massey, 991 yds., 16 TDs Passing: N/A Receiving: Casten Wirth, 206 yds., 5 TDs Tackles: Casten Wirth, 130 tkls. Sacks: Casten Wirth, 6 Ints.: Casten Wirth, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We return a good nucleus on both sides of the football. Our senior class will be the strength of our program. The majority of them are multi-year starters on both sides of the ball. As a team and a staff we spent a good chunk of last year adapting to the 8-Man game. We started to understand the differences between the 8-Man game and 11-Man game as the season progressed. We do have a few holes to fill on both offense and defense, but we have some young guys that are ready to step up and show what they can do on the varsity level. We have a tough regular season schedule that will prepare us for the postseason. We will have arguably one of the best backfields in 8-Man with Tanner (Heckel) and Jalen (Massey). Up front we return Kaedin Massey and Caleb Anschutz. Both were All-District offensive linemen last season. Casten Wirth and Ethen Ramey return at receiver and both had offensive postseason honors as well. Defensively we return six starters and add Tanner at DB. We return our top four tacklers from last season. The key for us is to build depth and have some young guys step up to get our seniors some breaks.”

Notes: The first year of 8-Man saw the Tigers continue the success of 11-Man and the return of six starters, along with the addition of 1A All-State QB/ DB Tanner Heckel ( 53-101, 1,109 yds., 13 TDs, 97 car., 882 yds., 14 TDs, 47 tkls., 2 INTs) from Inman, leaves LHS as the favorite in a tough District 2.

2022 Record: 9-1 / Central Prairie League

Head Coach: Morgan Grippin (1st year, 9-1) Asst.: Tanner Tranbarger

Offense: Air Raid Defense: N/A

Returning starters: Ervey Triana, OL/LB, 5-9, 180, Sr.; Hector Gomez, RB/LB, 5-7, 155, Jr.; Jason Cleavland, RB/LB, 6-0, 170, Sr.; James Granger, DE, 6-5, 200, Jr.; Orion Guevara, 5-8, 135, So.; Aiden Katz, 5-7, 135, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Hector Gomez, 60 rush., 799 yds., 17 TDs Passing: Hector Gomez, 1-1, 57 yds., 1 TD Receiving: Jason Cleavland, 10 rec., 338 yds., 7 TDs Tackles: Ervey Triana, 112 tkls. Sacks: James Granger, Jason Cleveland, 2 ea. Ints.: Orion Guevara, Ervey Triana, 2 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Coming off of the best season Macksville has had since the fall of 2011, we are definitely going to have a different look as far as personnel. We lost a good core group of seniors that meant a lot to our program and most definitely helped establish it. We will be replacing a few key spots with some new faces, but I expect them to step in and step up. We return an exciting running back and solid receiving corps for this upcoming season and two of our top three tacklers. We definitely have some pieces to build around and with a little bit of development from the guys, I expect us to once again be a tough team. A big key for us is going to be developing depth in key spots and staying injury-free.”

Notes: Macksville enjoyed an incredible 2022-23 sports season with nine wins on the gridiron and a 1A-I hoops title, but key graduation losses, and the departure of coach Kyle Bright for a principal job in Kinsley, give MHS a different look this fall. Morgan Grippin takes over and welcomes back talented junior Hector Gomez (799 rush yds., 17 TDs, 26 tkls., 1 INT) and seniors Ervery Triana (112 tkls.) and Jason Clevleand (10 rec., 383 yds., 7 TDs, 5 TFL, 1 INT) to help continue the success. Tall junior D-end James Granger returns (69 tkls., 8.5 TFL) and he’ll likely take on an expanded role in the offense as well.

2022 Record: 6-4 / Lyon County League

Head Coach: Nate Teichgraeber (1st year) Assts.: Fred McClain, Parker Gates

Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-2 Read

Returning starters: Hayden Helm, QB/DB, Sr.; Gannon Pyle, TE/LB, Sr.; Lane Darbro, RB/DE, Sr.; Jesse Schneider, OL/DE, Sr.; Colton Isch, RB/DB, Jr.; Packer Bolinger, OL/DL, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Hayden Helm, 72 rush., 453 yds., 7 TDs Passing: Hayden Helm, 32-46, 394, 2 TDs

Receiving: Lane Darbro, 12 rec., 126 yds. Tackles: Gannon Pyle, 45 tkls. Sacks: N/A Ints.: N/A Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our goals are to) improve the championship culture of Bulldog football, win our first game, win the league, win districts, and most importantly, win a state championship.”

Notes: After graduating an incredible group of seniors that went 41-4 from 2018 through 2021 the Bulldogs slipped to 6-4 last fall and finished third in a loaded district. Gone after seven seasons and 55 wins is Alex McMillian, who is off to coach 11-Man football at Plainville, while assistant Nate Teichgraeber, the former Council Grove and West Franklin head coach, takes the reins. His staff will include second-year Madison assistant Parker Gates and former long-time Bulldog head coach Fred McLain who will come out of retirment to join the staff. Teichgraeber inherits a team that will miss the speed of standout running back and sprinter Bryson Turner this fall, but six experienced starters return to provide stability as Madison transitions to a new coach for the first time in just under a decade. Quarterback Hayden Helm retuns for his senior season to lead the offense after accounting for 850 combined rush and pass yards and nine total TDs last fall. Senior running back and defensive end Lane Darbro returns after catching 12 of Helm’s 32 completions for 126 yards and serving as one of the top tacklers the past two seasons. Linebacker Gannon Pyle also returns for his senior season after posting 45 tackles a year ago.

2022 Record: 2-7 / Northern Plains League

Head Coach: Wyatt Flinn (1st year) Assts.: Stuart Vance, Jarrett Christie

Returning starters: Mason McMains, C/NG, Sr.; Aaron Sterling, HB/CB, Sr.; Justice White, DE, Sr.; Cooper McDill, QB/S, Jr.; Eli Vance, FB/TE/LB, Jr.; Nate Meyers, HB/LB, Jr.; Isaiah Ridgeway, TE/CB, Jr.; Camden Ward, TE/CB, Jr.; Aaron Underwood, G/DE, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Cooper McDill Passing: Cooper McDill

Receiving: Isaiah Ridgeway Tackles: Cooper McDill Sacks: Eli Vance Ints.: Cooper McDill

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Playing together and trusting in each other will be our keys in order to have a successful season.”

Notes: The Grizzlies promoted assistant coach Wyatt Flinn – a Rock Hills alum – and he’ll serve as the fourth head coach for the school in as many seasons. The Grizzlies have posted three consecutive losing seasons including back-to-back years with just two wins. Flinn inherits a squad with significant experience back in the form of nine returning starters. The Grizzlies will still be relatively young with just three of those players in the senior class. All-NPL running back Grant Meyers is gone to graduation, but junior Cooper McDill earned honorable mention as a D-back last fall.

Meade

2022 Record: 9-2 / SPIAA

Head Coach: Clint Kuhns (2nd year, 9-2) Asst.: Brandon Siruta

Offense: Wing T Defense: 3-3 Stack

Returning starters: Brock Keith, RB/LB, 5-11, 184, Sr.; Bradon Bird, WR/CB, 6-3, 174, Sr.; Cade Cronister, QB/CB, 5-10, 158, Sr.; Vincent Lynn, WR/ LB, 6-2, 173, Sr.; Harrison Bachman, WR/DE, 5-9, 158, Sr.; Jaryn Knott, OL/DE, 5-10, 181, Sr.; Alek Holguin, TE/DE, 6-2, 255, Jr.; Jace Jones, OL/NG, 6-0, 203, Jr.; Samuel Lynn, QB/LB, 6-0, 163, So.; Cole Papay, OL/DL, 6-5, 252, Sr.; Hayden Sions, WR/CB, 5-11, 158, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Brock Keith, 930 yds., 17 TDs Passing: Cade Cronister Receiving: Bradon Bird, 21 rec., 377 yds., 2 TD Tackles: Brock Keith, 90 tkls. Sacks: Alek Holgiun, 6 Ints.: Brock Keith, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We will need guys to step up to fill the shoes of these outgoing seniors, not just on the field but off the field as well. We are fortunate to get some of our younger guys some experience last season and hope they can make the jump into a leadership role in the upcoming season.”

Notes: The Buffs proved the 2021 state title was no fluke, finishing 9-2 last fall with both losses coming to eventual semifinalists Hill City and Wichita County, and both in competitive fashion. Second-year head coach Clint Kuhns bids farewell to some quality graduates, but several pieces return to keep the Buffs a factor in 8-Man I. It all starts with senior running back/linebacker Brock Keith who provides a good mix of speed and power on both sides of the ball. The offensive front will have some size in the form of juniors Jace Jones and Alek Holguin, and senior Cole Papay, who missed last season to injury. Senior Bradon Bird returns as a key member of the secondary and receiver corps where he accounted for nearly 400 yards of offense on 21 receptions with two TDs last fall. Holguin will wreak havoc on opposing QBs at D-end after six sacks a season ago.

OBERLIN-DECATUR COMM.

2022 Record: 2-7 / Northwest Kansas League

Head Coach: Brandon Hardwick (3rd yer, 5-13)

Assts.: Kyle Breth, Brad Weese

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Luke Zodrow, QB/LB, Sr.; Reid

Fort, DB/WR, Sr.; Garrett Emigh, G/DE, Jr.; Talan Sauvage, WR/DB, Jr.; Conner Holladay, WR/DB, So.; Tyler Ostmeyer, TE/DE, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Luke Zodrow, 503 yds., 6 TDs Passing: Luke Zodrow, 633 yds. Receiving: Conner Holliday, 21 rec., 184 yds. Tackles: Luke Zodrow, 75 tkls. Sacks: Tyler Ostmeyer, 1.5 Ints.: Lukas Zodrow,Teague Morford, 1 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our O-line is going to be young with two freshmen and zero seniors, so coaching them up and getting them where they need to be will be crucial. We will have to rely more on our receivers this year and be confident in taking shots downfield. Defensively, keys to success are going to be to improve our open field tackling and to get in the backfield more for more TFLs and sacks.”

Notes: With six returning starters, including senior QB Luke Zodrow, the Red Devils look to find a couple more wins against a tough 2023 schedule.

MONTEZUMA-SOUTH GRAY

2022

Record: 2-8 / SPIAA

Head Coach: Grant Salmans (4th year, 14-15) Asst.: Jeff Blattner

Returning starters: Conner Salmans, TE/S, Sr.; Rylan Goossen, FB/LB, Sr.; Damian Loewen, TE/DE, Sr.; Jesus Marquez, G/LB, Jr.; Andrew Cole, HB/C, So.; Landon Garica, G, So.; Asa Briscoe, C/DL, So.; Sabastian Mendoza, G/NG, Jr.; Brody Schmidt, LB, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Rylan Goossen, 69 car., 275 yds., 2 TDs Passing: N/A Receiving: Conner Salmans, 7 rec., 157 yds., 2 TDs Tackles: Rylan Goossen, 53 tkls. Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We will have quite a few returners on both sides of the ball but will have to replace three good seniors. Last year the seven freshmen all improved throughout the season but will need to come into camp in good condition and ready to contribute. We suffered through a lot of injuries last year so we return sophomores that have played and started. Our line should be a strength with returning experience. We will have about 15 total players out again this year with about four or five freshmen. Last season we only won two games, but those were in our district, so we made the playoff bracket. We lost to Macksville in the first round but the experience should help.”

Notes: Veteran coach Grant Salmans enters the fourth-year of his second stint as head coach of the Rebels with nine returners with starting experience.

2022 Record: 6-3 / Three Rivers League

Head Coach: Matt Fowler (6th year, 29-17; 15th overall, 91-49) Assts.: Steve McBrien, JD Walker, Jeff Schreppel, Jake Walker

Offense: Single Wing Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Patrick Doyle, DL, 6-3, 280, Sr.; Rayden Myers, OL/DE, 6-2, 205, Jr.; Tanner O Neal, TE/DE, 6-2, 185, Jr.; Hunter Kelly, RB, 5-10, 155, Jr.; Alex Long, OL/LB, 6-0, 170, Jr.; Connor Minor, OL, 5-10, 225, Jr.; Josh Hutchinson, DB, 5-10, 165, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Hunter Kelly, 35 car., 295 yds., 5 TDs Passing: N/A Receiving: Tanner O Neal, 1 rec., 10 yds. Tackles: Patrick Doyle, 64 tkls. Sacks: Tanner O Neal, 2.5 Ints.: Josh Hutchinson, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We want to play hard nosed physical football. It is important that we make our community proud by playing hard, and with class. We want to improve every day in season and out of season.”

Notes: After posting winning records in each of his first three seasons at Oswego, coach Matt Fowler fielded a relatively young team in 2021 and fell to 3-6, but the Indians rebounded last fall and improved to 6-3. In 2023 Fowler will rely on a number of new skill players to carry the offensive load after the gradution of Jake Hutchinson and Levi George, but the Indians will be big and experienced up front, always an asset when transitioning to new playmakers. Junior All-TRL OL selection Alex Long will provide leadership while junior RB Hunter Kelly will carry a heavier load. The D will have size and experience up front with 6-3, 280-pound senior Patrick Doyle back after earning All-TRL honors. He is joined by a pair of 6-2 junior D-ends in Rayden Meyers (All-TRL HM) and Tanner O Neal. Hutchinson and George will be missed in the back half of the D – Hutchinson at LB, George at DB – but five starters return on that side of the ball.

Notes: In one season under Bret Lange the Wildcats finished with the most wins since a 7-4 mark in 2008. This year, former Canton-Galva assistant and P.E. teacher Tyler O’Connor takes over and inherits a squad with significant talent returning from a team that finished District 4 runner-up to Little River. Lange remains on staff as an assistant. The Wildcats were able to win close games in a four-game win streak at the end of the season including 42-34 over Solomon, 48-40 over Goessel in double overtime, and 48-44 over Central-Burden which yielded a challenging playoff match-up with Lyndon the Wildcats lost, 39-0, to end the year 6-4. O’Connor gets back seven players with starting experience, but just one of those is a senior, running back/linebacker Joaquin Huff. If O’Connor can capitalize on the talent and momentum that produced a 2A basketball title in March his squad is well-equipped to challenge for the District 4 title and a deep playoff run this fall.

2022 Record: 5-4 / Central Prairie League

Head Coach: Marc Cowles (9th year, 41-34; 21st overall, 104-92) Assts.: Matthew Sexson, Keagan Schubert

Offense: Power Run Defense: Multiple Returning starters: Kaleb Pavlu, RB/LB, 6-0, 185, Sr.; Derrick Hoss, OL/DL, 5-9, 270, Sr.; Diego Guzman, RB/DB, 5-9, 155, Jr.; Ben Durham, TE, 5-11, 145, So.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our district will again be very difficult, but will provide the opportunity to compete for a playoff berth. We need positive leaders to emerge who will lead by example, take charge and carry our team. Our goal is to get better each week and put ourselves into position to be competitive when the postseason begins.” yds., 3 TDs Tackles: Cordell Jordan, 47 tkls. Sacks: Karter Hiten, 1 Ints.: Cordell Jordan, 2 Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “A key for us this year will be execution and building depth. We hope to be competitive in our district this year.”

Notes: The Eagles improved from 3-6 in 2021 to 5-4 last fall and finished third in 8-Man I, District 7. Marc Cowles’ team was far from striking distance of District 7’s top teams, Macksville and Trego, though, dropping those contests by a combined score of 114-18. Four returning starters will try to narrow the margin with those district leaders this fall and graduation losses at those programs could help make that possible. On paper, the top four teams in District 7 appear like they could have good competition for those spots again this season.

Notes: Oxford improved to 4-5 last fall, and while the Wildcats were finished fifth in District 3 they were very competitive in two of four district losses. Narrow defeats at the hands of Wichita Independent (40-34) and Argonia-Attica (60-40) ultimately kept OHS from the postseason. Seven starters are back to make a playoff push this fall, but veteran coach Shawn Burkes will still field a relatively young team with just two returning senior starters.

Tackles: Brayden Berens, 94 tkls. Sacks: Clayton Freeman, 3 Ints.: Brayden Berens, 4

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our keys for this year will be toughness, execution, and depth. With these we could accomplish a lot.”

Notes: Skyline fell to 1-8 last season but found themselves on the losing end of close games with South Barber in Week 1 (36-32), Stafford in Week 2 (46-24), and Ness City in Week 4 (52-24), with their lone win, 70-6 over Kiowa County in Week 6. Injuries would see the rest of the season look much different as the Thunderbirds would score just 12 total points in the other five losses, allowing at least 34 in each and getting shut out three times. Eight starters return to try and flip the script this fall. Senior Brayden Berens returns to lead the T-birds on both sides of the ball and a big offensive and defensive front is led by hard-nosed senior lineman Griffin Wallace.

ROSALIA-FLINTHILLS

2022 Record: 2-7 / South Central Border League

Head Coach: Chase Casteel (3rd year, 5-13) Assts.: Jon Dunbar, Erik Sorum, Trevor Kemp

Offense: I-formation Defense: 3-3-2

Returning starters: Cody Williams, G/DL, Sr.; Conner Sigg, CB/RB/WR, 5-9, Sr.; Tate Leslie, WR/ QB, 5-11, 150, Sr.; Austin Liggett, OL, Sr.; Javin Weis, ATH, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Wyatt Osborne, 41 car., 363 yds., 3 TDs Passing: Tate Leslie, 15-39, 113 yds., 1 TD Receiving: Wyatt Osborne, 4 rec., 27 yds. Tackles: Kolton Stanfield, 47 tkls. Sacks: Braiden Neeley, Kolton Stanfield, 3 ea. Ints.: Kodee Pinkerton, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Ultimately, our team goal is to put together a winning season. However, my main focus is to continue down the rebuild path and build Flinthills into a consistent and competitive football program. Three years ago we made history with a three-win season sending us to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. This year we hope to make history again with a winning record and third consecutive playoff appearance for the first time since 2007. Our main focus is becoming a consistent and competitive program for the long run!” Notes: Chase Casteel’s team graduated a couple key players from 2022, but seven starters return to help him continue the building process at Flinthills. Those starters provide a bit of everything for Casteel and his staff. HM All-SCBL lineman Cody Williams will lead the way up front, versatile athlete Tate Leslie could see time at all the offensive skill positions, inlcuding QB, and three-year starting D-back Conner Sigg will play a bigger role on offense this fall.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We lost a lot of athletes from last year’s senior class including 8-Man All-Star Bryan Steadman, but we are looking to reload. After some off the field issues kept us out of the playoffs last year, we are looking forward to fighting back and putting a winning product on the field. The team we have this year has a ton of heart and will show it with their fight on the field. We look forward to putting a winning product on whitesfoodliner.com

the field come this fall.”

Notes: It was a mixed-bag in Blake Lee’s first year leading the Bulldogs. After a 1-2 start that included a season-opening win over Central Christian and back-to-back losses to South Barber and Norwich, Pretty Prairie forfeited a Week 4 district game with Moundridge citing off the field issues. As a result, the Bulldogs forfeited all district games, and even though they posted a 34-22 win over Herington on the field in Week 5, it falls in the loss column. After consecutive lopsided losses to Goessel and Little River, PPHS closed the season on a high note with high scoring wins over Solomon and Udall. Lee enters year two with six experienced starters back including senior dual-threat QB Gage Bowers and senior linemen Blaine Rogers and Brogan Stucky.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(We must) stay healthy! We graduated four starters from offense and five on defense, so we will have some inexperience. These young men will need to work hard and develop good chemistry in order for us to achieve our goals.”

Notes: After graduating a very talented group of players from a 10-1 team in 2021 the Blue Devils slipped to 4-5 last fall. Sedan was dominant in their four wins last fall but were beaten soundly in all but one of their losses, a 52-48 Week 5 defeat to Oswego. Veteran Sedan coach Mick Holt welcomes back just four starters this fall and emphasized that staying healthy will be key to the team’s success. The good news for Holt is that two of those returning players are back after earning All-SCBL honors a year ago. Jeremiah Prince and Jackson Dowell were both recognized for their play at linebacker – Prince on the first team and Dowell on the second – while Prince also earned second team honors for his play at quarterback.

SOUTH SUMNER (CALDWELL/SOUTH HAVEN)

2022 Record: 9-1 / South Central Border

Head Coach: Sean Blosser (2nd year, 9-1; 13th overall, 82-38) Assts.: Zane Aguilar, Jalen Risley, Kelly Sandell, Darin Ward, Trey Coulter

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our team goal is to build off the success we had in year one of our program. We will have to replace two starters on both sides of the ball. We will look a little different offensively, but we can be as explosive if we have the buy-in this summer. We return our offensive line from last year and feel they could be a big reason we are able to find success if we stay healthy. We have the athletes behind them to make plays. I am excited about the opportunity we have to change our offense and people could be surprised about where it is. We will have to get more physical and tougher defensively if we want to reach our goals that we have for ourselves. Our goal is to make it farther in the playoffs and put ourselves in a position to be playing our best at the end of the season.”

Notes: Quinter played tough against the top teams in a loaded 8-Man I, District 6 last fall. After a fourth place finish a battle-tested QHS knocked of District 5 champ Clifton-Clyde in Week 9, 28-22, pulling off one of the biggest upsets of 2022. The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the regional playoff game with Meade and nearly knocked off the defending state champs, but fell in a heartbreaker, 30-28. The majority of that squad returns to try to win a district title and make a deep playoff run. All-NWKL selections Lakin Getz, Ethan Gruenbacher, Dashiell Brown, and Trace Kinderknecth return as seniors.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Blake Higginbotham Passing: Brock Nelson Receiving: Daniel Dean Tackles: Blake Higginbotham

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goal is to be) competitive in our district. (Our key to success) is staying healthy. We had a large number of injuries last season.”

Notes: The Eagles were competitive in just two games last fall, a Week 3 loss to Doniphan West (68-48) and a Week 9 win over Yates Center (66-60), in the other seven games coach Brian Chiles’ team scored 14 points or less each time, allowed 46 points or more in each game, and were shut out three times. Four returning seniors will be looked to for leadership and seven total starters will try to help the Eagles to a better record. Senior Blake Higginbotham provides speed in the backfield and at linebacker and returns as the leading rusher and tackler. Brock Nelson is back to distribute the ball from behind center after starting as freshman last fall. Seniors Graden Oswald, Josh Huayaban, and Kyan Crouch return as starters along the offensive and defensive fronts.

Ints.: Spencer Krause, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Keys for success in 2023 will be to compete every single day and create a foundation of accountability for any and all players. With being in a new system there is a learning curve for everyone and while we have athletes with skills to compete, we all have to have the work ethic and the right attitude to take this to the next level.”

Notes: After three seasons under Mike Kilgore former Gorilla Andrew Capsey takes over the program as head coach. He inherits a team that won their first two games a season ago before closing the year on a seven-game losing streak. The Gorillas were competitive in many of those losses, including a Week 6 loss to Moundridge 42-34 and the following week in overtime to Herington, 54-48. Capsey gets to work with two of the top players in the Wheat State League in quarterback/D-back Spencer Coup and receiver/D-back Spencer Krause.

Spearville

Head Coach: Travis Callaway (6th year, 23-24; 7th overall, 26-39) Asst.: Tayler Stull

Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-4

Returning starters: Austin Hornung, RB/LB, 6-0, 185, Sr.; Blake Werner, RB/DB, 5-11, 175, Sr.; Aydin Ruiz, RB/DB, 5-10, 145, Jr.; Zac Cressler, TE/LB, 5-11, 170, Jr.; Parker Rynerson, OL/DL, 5-11, 215, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Austin Hornung, 143 car., 674 yds., 4 TDs Passing: Austin Hornung, 29-86, 333 yds., 6 TDs Receiving: Aydin Ruiz, 10 rec., 131 yds. Tackles: Austin Hornung, 73 tkls. Sacks: Austin Hornung, 1 Ints.: Austin Hornung, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We return a lot of production in the back side of our defense with four of five starters back and a couple other guys who got significant playing time after some injuries. These guys should help us be good defensively as we get some new guys settled in up front. On offense we are in a similar place as we return most of our skill position players but have some holes to fill up front with some inexperienced players.”

Notes: Spearville slipped to 2-7 last fall but lost five games by 20 points or less, with two losses by twopoints and one by 12. Five starters return to try and win those close games this fall, including senior QB Austin Hornung who, along with three other returning defenders, also posted at least 48 tackles last year.

Stockton Sublette

2022 Record: 0-8 / Mid-Continent League

Head Coach: Don Moffet (2nd year, 0-8) Assts.: Jesse Dunlap, Spencer Hilbrink, Heath Muir

Offense: Single Wing Defense: 3-4-1

Returning starters: Max Moffet, QB/DB, 6-1, 150, Sr.; Zac Young, RB/LB, 5-11, 190, Sr.; Emerson Lowry, RB/DB, 5-5, 145, Jr.; Hayden Hilbrink, C/DL, Sr.; Ryan Mongeau, OL/DL, 5-8, 240, Jr..; Jaxon Dunlap, OL/DL, 5-11, 230, Jr.; Preston Chandler, Sr.; Jack Gasper, Jr.; Deacon Creighton, Jr.; Cameron Balthazor, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Team goal is to compete against our very tough district and come out with some wins. Defensive keys to success are to use our big guys up front to disrupt the other offense. Offensive key is to use our depth in skill players to keep the other team guessing who is carrying the ball.”

Notes: Coach Don Moffett enters his second year as head coach of the Tigers with 10 experienced players back to try an end a 17-game losing streak. Moffett will use the single wing offensively to deceive opposing defenses with multiple handoffs, misdirection in the backfield, and pulling along the line of scrimmage. The Tigers play a brutal schedule and just scoring the ball will be measured improvement after being shut out five times, scoring six and 14 points in two other games, and forfeiting to Hill City.

Receiving: Jesiah Bonura, 38 rec., 388 yds., 5 TDs

Tackles: Cameron Brian, 15 tkls. Sacks: N/A Ints.: Logan Pasta, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our team goal is to enjoy the journey and compete with every team we play. We have to take care of the immediate game before us and continue to improve and get better each week to get an opportunity to get in the playoffs.”

Notes: After a dominant 9-0 2021 season the Lions move into KSHSAA play and went 3-5 last fall against an absolutely brutal schedule, but the final record doesn’t tell the full story. The Lions opened the season going blow-for-blow with the best team in 8-Man II before Axtell pulled away in the second half. In Week 4, CPLS pushed eventual 8-Man I quarterfinalist Lyndon to the brink in a 28-24 loss. The Lions pushed Burlingame and Madison the following two weeks as well. Now, nine experienced starters return to help Doug Bonura’s squad challenge in the loaded 8-Man I, District 2.

2022 Record: 1-7 / South Central Border League

Head Coach: Barney Rockey (1st year) Assistants: N/A

Returning starters: Jenson Harness, QB, 6-2, 200, Sr.; Isaac Johnson, WR/DB, 6-0, 155, Jr.; Duane Ault, WR/DB, 6-0, 185, Sr.; Brent Burley, RB, 5-11, 170, Sr.; James Webb, DE, 5-10, 160, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: N/A

Notes: After nearly 20 years as head coach, Wyatt Williams moves on to Attica/Argonia and former assistant Barney Rockey takes over the Eagle program. UHS enjoyed some fantastic seasons under Williams, including a stretch of four season with at least seven wins each from 2011 to 2014, culminating with a 10-1 finish in the last season in that span. The Eagles won seven games as recently as 2018, but have tallied just four total wins in the past three seasons. Rockey served as Williams’ assistant since 2006.

WICHITA-THE INDEPENDENT

2022 Record: 8-2 / Central Plains League

Head Coach: Leterius Ray (3rd year, 9-8) Assts.: Shane Pope, Jacques Williams, James Coleman

Offense: Spread Defense: 4-2

Returning starters: Alvin Richard, RB/OLB, 6-1, 181, Sr.; Grayson Jensen, TE/DL, 6-6, 170, Sr.; Tatym Stalnaker, QB/S, 6-1, 173, Jr.; Mason Lipsey, 5-10, 168, Jr.; Ripley Cole, K, 5-11, 150, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders:

Rushing: Alvin Richard, 42 car., 190 yds., 4 TDs

Passing: Tatym Stalnaker, 30-50, 671 yds., 11 TDs

Receiving: Grayson Jensen, 5 rec., 77 yds., 1 TD

Tackles: Alvin Richard, 44 tkls. Sacks: Grayson Jensen, 3 Ints.: Alvin Richard, Aaron Shadid, 1 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We graduated nine seniors and need to identify this group’s leaders. Our experienced guys have to take our newcomers under their wings and replicate everything that led to last season’s success. We have a chance to put together a competitive team, but only if we don’t allow ourselves to be complacent.”

Notes: It was a special season for a long-struggling Wichita Independent program as the combination of a big senior class and a shift to 8-Man football provided just what the Panthers needed to post eight wins and a district runner-up finish in 2022. Gone from that squad are nine seniors, including All-State selections Christian Dean and Joseph Recalde-Phillips, but the cupboard is not bare for third-year coach Leterius Ray as he enters 2023. Four experienced position players return incuding quarterback Tatym Stalnaker and 6-6 tight end Grayson Jensen. Running back Alvin Richard will carry a heavier offensive load and is also one of the top defenders for the Panthers along with Jensen, who recorded three sacks last fall. Junior Ripley Cole returns to handle the kicking duties for Independent.

2022 Record: 4-5 / Hi-Plains League

Head Coach: Lyle Befort (1st year) Assistants: N/A

Offense: N/A Defense: N/A

Returning starters: Braxon Blackwood, RB/DE, 5-9, 170, Sr.; Edgar Saenz, RB/LB, 5-8, 175, Jr.; Noah Friesen, WR/DB, 6-2, 190, Jr.; Jonny Garetson, OL/ DL, 6-0, 215, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: N/A

Notes: Sublette enjoyed a kind of breakout season in their second year under John Le last fall finishing 4-5 after six consecutive seasons with one win or less and narrowly missed a winning season after a six-point loss to South Central in Week 2. Now a good class of 2023 – led by standouts Miguel Hernandez and Ace Martinez – have graduated, and one top returning player, Alex Peters, moved out of state for his senior year. Coach Le moved on to a job as head track coach at Cimarron and former assistant Lyle Befort takes over as head coach of the Sublette football program. Senior Braxon Blackwood and junior Edgar Saenz are key returners this season.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goals are to) stay focused and get better daily. We open with two very good teams in Hoxie and Hill City so we are going to have to be ready from day one. We have little to no depth and have to stay healthy.”

Notes: The Golden Eagles were runner-up in 8-Man I, District 8 last fall, losing to Macksville in what would serve as a de facto district title game, 50-34, in Week 4. Quarterback Owen Day and receiver Gunner Wilson, now graduated, led the offense to 50 points or more in Trego’s six wins, but in losses to Hoxie and Hill City to open the season, and to Hill City again the playoffs, the Eagles couldn’t muster more than 22 points. Day and Wilson will be sorely missed, and the Eagles took another hit when versatile weapon Nolan Kinderknect transferred to Northern Valley for his senior season, but an experienced offensive line returns intact and will help usher in new players at the skill positions. The defense will carry veteran coach Pat Haxton’s squad early thanks to the return of four of the top five tacklers.

2022 Record: 1-8 / Three Rivers League

2022 Record: 5-4 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: Tommy Tryon (3rd year, 7-11) Asst.: Scott Romeiser

Offense: Multiple Option Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Miles Miller, RB/LB, 5-11, 165, Sr.; Joe Kern, OL/DL, 5-10, 205, Sr.; Colton Harland, TE/DB, 5-9, 155, Sr.; Octavien Cardenas, OL/DL, 6-0, 215, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Miles Miller, 2 yds., 1 TD Passing: N/A Receiving: Miles Miller, 17 rec., 382 yds., 7 TDs Tackles: Miles Miller, 68 tkls. Sacks: Octavien Cardenas, 5 Ints.: Miles Miller, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We will be really young and inexperienced with six of eight starters graduating from last year’s team. Our biggest goal will be to learn our jobs and be sound on both sides of the ball. We do have some young guys that will be ready to step up, it will just take some time to develop them mentally for varsity football. Our keys to success will revolve around taking care of the ball on offense, being assignment-sound on both sides of the ball, and handling the adversity that will come as a younger team.”

Notes: The Tigers improved to 5-4 in their second year under Tommy Tryon but graduate a big senior class and will be very young this fall. Of the four returning players with starting experience three are seniors and one is a junior. Senior Miles Miller will likely be relied on to do a bit of everything offensively after recording 17 receptions for 382 yards and seven touchdowns and a rushing score in 2022. He’s also the top returning player on defense after tallying 68 tackles and an INT. Joe Kern and Octavien Cardenas provide experience up front. Cardenas will complement Miller on D with five sacks last fall.

Yates Center

Head Coach: Ryan Panko (7th year, 16-39; 9th overall, 36-48) Assistants: Dakota Price, Chris Cavender, Thayne Smith

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: N/A

Returning Statistical Leaders: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: N/A

Notes: Graduation raided a roster that finished 6-3 in 2021 and the result was a one-win season with multiple forfeits in 2022. Even the one win on the field over Cedar Vale/Dexter (50-14) was a forfeit because the forfeit to district foe Oswego the week prior led to the Wildcats automatically forfeiting all district contests. Attempts to reach Ryan Panko this summer were unsuccessful so it’s unclear if he was planning to return, but if he does it would be his seventh season leading the Wildcats. Prior to last season Panko listed only seniors as returning starters, so it’s unclear how many athletes return with experience this fall. Panko was assisted last year by Dakota Price, Chris Cavender, Thayne Smith, and previously ran a 3-2 defense and spread offense. Yates Center did end last season on a bit of high note, scoring 60 points in a 66-60 loss to Maranatha.

KANSAS PREGAME 8-MAN II PRESEASON RANKINGS

1.Axtell

2. Victoria

3. Osborne

4. Sharon Springs-Wallace Co.

5. Dighton

Others: Bucklin, Canton-Galva, Frankfort, Hanover, Hodgeman Co., Lebo, Minneola, South Barber, Sylvan-Lucas, Thunder Ridge

By Keegan McCullick & John Baetz, Kansas Pregame

Axtell enjoyed a second consecutive dominant 13-0 season with their four-point semifinal win over Canton-Galva the only game decided by less than 44 points last fall.

The father and son combo of Eric and Isaac Detweiler wrapped up four years of football dominance together last season, the team-up helped AXTELL to a 44-5 record with back-to-back state titles in 2021 and 2022 - winning those championships by a combined 120-46.

Despite the graduation of Detweiler, the all-time career leader in touchdowns in 8-Man history and two-time 8-Man II Sports in Kansas Offensive Player of the Year, along with two other talented seniors in Drew Strathman and Evan Buessing, Axtell is in surprisingly good shape to continue their 26-game win streak indefinitely. All-State junior Brandon Schmelzle is slated to take over as signal caller after notching 1,295 yards and 30 TDs receiving and rushing, as well as going 4-6 for 61 yards and two TDs in the air. Defensively, All-State junior Eli Broxterman was one of the team’s top playmakers with 89 tackles and six interceptions, while sophomore Landon Schmitz recorded four sacks. All-State juniors Grady Buessing, Sawyer Deters, and All-State senior Grant Buessing also return after starting a season ago.

THUNDER RIDGE ran roughshod through the western half of 8-Man II before hitting the buzzsaw that was Axtell in the title game with AHS ending the Longhorns season for the second straight year after a loss in the semifinals in 2021. The class of 2023 was one of Thunder Ridge’s best, posting a 22-3 mark the last two falls. Coach Joel Struckhoff enters his sixth season leading his alma mater with just three returning starters, but that trio is solid and will give Struckhoff consistency as he breaks in a large group of new faces on both sides of the ball. Mason Baker will make the move to quarterback for his senior season after accounting for over 1,300 all-purpose yards a year ago. Josh Ferguson will take on an expanded role carrying the ball this fall after serving as primarily an offensive linemen in the past, but he’ll continue to maintain his role as the defensive leader after racking up 174 tackles in 2022.

Another team to look out for in 2023 is OSBORNE, who brings back eight guys with starting experience after going 9-2 and advancing to the state quarterfinals before they were knocked out by Axtell. All-State senior Doak Guttery is among the best signal callers in 8-Man, last year posting over 1,400 yards rushing and passing with 30 TDs. Fellow All-State senior Nathan Goheen also returns as the teams leader in tackles (80), sacks (8.5) and receiving yards with 16 receptions for 237 yards and six TDs last season. All-State junior Hunter Howell also made a big impact offensively with 56 carries for 503 yards and 13 TDs. Other returning starters include juniors Dawson Lantz, Dalton Garman, Gage Seifried, and senior linemen Sam Kendig and Qwinton Morris.

VICTORIA advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs with a 10-0 record before finally facing defeat at the hands of state runner-up Thunder Ridge in a 62-46 barnburner. The Knights have five starters back in All-State senior Seth Schwien, fellow seniors William Scherrer, Chase Schumacher, Landon Schmidtberger, and All-State sophomore O-lineman Kyle Huser. Schwien is the team’s top returning receiver after catching 23 passes for 402 yards and 5 TDs, and also led the team with 81 tackles and nine sacks. Replacing All-State senior Carsen Werth’s production is likely to be the biggest challenge for the Knights.

CANTON-GALVA gave Axtell their only scare of the season in 2022, losing 36-32 in the semifinals and cementing them as the second best team in Division II last fall. Up to that point, head coach Shelby Hoppes squad had seemed unstoppable, shutting out seven of their opponents, and holding all but Axtell and Little River - who they beat 66-36 in their season opener - to 12 points or less. While the Eagles were dominant last season, much of that had to do with a loaded senior class that included four All-Staters, a Defensive Player of the Year, and the core pieces of one of the best offensive attacks in the state. They do have some nice pieces back, though, including All-State senior Lane McMannis, fellow seniors Wyatt Collins, Isom Marston, Jaden Ediger, and junior Noah Collins.

SHARON SPRINGS-WALLACE CO. is coming off a 6-4 season that saw them advance to the state quarterfinals where they were knocked out by a loaded Dighton squad. From that team, second year head coach Kyle Gfeller gets back nine guys with starting experience in seniors Tyler Korbe, Ace Edwards, Braden McKain, Jaren Rains, Brenton Welsh, Tharyan Appelhans, Cade Funk, Kean Dinkel, and junior linebacker Travis Korbe. Tyler Korbe carried the ball 102 times for 609 yards and seven TDs and is likely to see an increase in touches with the graduation of All-State QB Cade Johnson. BUCKLIN put together a strong 6-4 season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs before continued on page 143

Axtell

2022 Record: 13-0 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: Eric Detweiler (11th year, 89-24)

Assts.: Dale Buessing, Craig Wiebe, Quinn Buessing

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Brandon Schmelzle, QB/DB, 6-2, 180, Jr.; Grady Buessing, WR/DB, 6-2, 190, Jr.; Sawyer Deters, Line, 6-2, 270, Jr.; Eli Broxterman, RB/DB, 6-0, 190, Jr.; Grant Buessing, OL/DL, 6-1, 220, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Brandon Schmelzle, 49 car., 512 yds., 16

TDs Passing: Brandon Schmelzle, 4-6, 61 yds., 2 TDs

Receiving: Brandon Schmelzle, 47 rec., 783 yds., 14

TDs Tackles: Eli Broxterman, 89 tkls. Sacks: Landon Schmitz, 4 Ints.: Brandon Schmelzle, 6

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We only had six upperclassmen last season, so we return a good majority of our squad. Replacing three seniors doesn’t seem like a big number, but they were a pretty special three seniors that led us to back-to-back state titles. Losing those three, our team will need to find a new identity, and like many squads, staying injury free will be key for us.”

Notes: Axtell is in the midst of a historically dominant run of 26 straight wins and back-to-back 8-Man II state titles. Only two games in the streak were closer than 26 points: A 2021 Week 4 win over rival Hanover (30-24) and last fall’s semifinal defeat of Canton-Galva (36-32) in a game that pitted the two best teams in 8-Man II. Those were also the only two times during the streak the Eagles scored less than 46 points. Eric Detweiler enters his 11th season as head coach with one glaring hole, the one left at QB and Safety by graduation of his son, Isaac. Two other key seniors also graduated, but don’t declare Axtell’s streak over just yet, a talented and experienced junior class is ready to carry on the Eagle tradition.

CLAFLIN-CENTRAL PLAINS

2022 Record: 2-7 / Central Prairie League

Head Coach: JD Klima (1st year) Assistants: Michael Ryan, Dustin Robison

Offense: Double Tight I Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Landon Daniels, OL/DL, So.; Connor Fries, OL/NG, Sr.; Logan Strode, OL, Jr.; Hunter Klima, E/LB, Sr.; Paxton Dody, E, Jr.; Eli Hurley, FB/LB, Jr.; Blaine Hickel, RB/DB, Sr.; Peyton Dody, DB, So.; Issac Heredia, DB, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders:

Rushing: Blaine Hickel, 96 car., 650 yds., 7 TDs

Passing: N/A Receiving: Hunter Klima, 14 rec., 261 yds., 3 TDs Tackles: Blaine Hickel, 104 tkls. Sacks: N/A Ints.: Hunter Klima, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goals are to) improve every week and hope we are playing our best ball by the end of the year.”

Notes: Veteran Central Plains coach and Claflin alum Chris Steiner ultimately decided to resign in late summer and JD Klima was hired to take over the program. He inherits a team that welcomes nine returning starters, including senior running back and safety Blaine Hickel, senior tight end and linebacker Hunter Klima, and senior lineman Connor Fries for a team that will be relatively young with six non-senior starters returning, including three sophomores. Hickel and Fries earned all-league honors a season ago along with current sophomore lineman Landon Daniels, and junior linebacker Eli Hurley. After a season leading Claflin in 2011, Steiner took over the newly formed football program for the consolidation of Claflin and Quivira Heights schools called Central Plains. Nine of his 12 seasons at the helm ended with winning records, including undefeated state championships in 2014 and 2018. Steiner also coached his son Bryce and later included him on his staff as an assistant.

BELOIT-ST. JOHN’S/TIPTON

2022 Record: 6-3 / Northern Plains League

Head Coach: Dean Gengler (5th year, 24-14) Assts.: Geoff Jermark, Scott Hartman, Lance Hulse

Offense: Multiple RPO Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Daniel Eilert, DE/TE, 6-2, 170, Sr.; Chance Jermark, LB/RB, 5-9, 170, Sr.; Tyson Gates, QB/DB, 6-0, 170, Jr.; Jacob Winkler, C, 6-3, 235, Sr.; Ryder Allen, DE/TE, 6-0, 170, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Tyson Gates, 147 car., 764 yds., 20 TDs; 138 car., 712 yds., 9 TDs Passing: Tyson Gates, 70146, 1,048 yds., 10 TDs Receiving: Daniel Eilert, 12 rec., 169 yds., 4 TDs Tackles: Chance Jermark, 115 tkls. Sacks: Ryder Allen, 5.5 Ints.: Jacob Winkler, Tyson Gates, 1 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We’ll be relying on young players in key spots this year to replace experience lost to graduation. Those players will have to come together with the returners we’ll have back and execute well. We don’t have a lot of size and will have to improve blocking.”

Notes: The Blujays graduated a strong group of six multi-season starters, but five experienced players return from last year’s squad that was upset by a battle-tested Frankfort team in Week 9, 48-28, to finish 6-3. Dean Gengler enters his fifth year leading St. John’s-Tipton and his first order of business is to reload his offensive and defensive fronts. If he can do that the duo of junior QB Tyson Gates and senior RB Chance Jermark provide two very strong building blocks for the Blujay foundation. Gates accounted for over 1,800 yards combined rushing and passing last fall, with 30 total TDs, while Jermark added 712 yards rushing and nine TDs. Jermark will lead the defense after tallying 115 tackles and five sacks a season ago. Big senior center Jacob Winkler returns to the heart of the offensive line.

COLDWATER-SOUTH CENTRAL

2022 Record: 4-5 / SPIAA

Head Coach: Brett Westrup (2nd year, 4-5) Assts.: Colten Clark, Rylan Woolfolk

Offense: Spread Run Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Gavin Uhl, LB/TE, 6-0, 200, Sr.; Creed Leeper, WR/DE, 6-2, 175, Sr.; Isaiah Jellison, RB/LB, 6-0, 195, Sr.; Curtis Barnard, OL/DL, 6-0, 230, Sr.; JT Prusa, QB/DB, 5-10, 170, Jr.; Hunter Loesch, OL/DL, 5-10, 240, Jr.; Jamie Sarmiento, WR/ DB, 5-8, 150, Jr.; Jack Herd, OL/LB, 6-0, 180, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: JT Prusa, 163 car., 944 yds., 16 TDs

Passing: JT Prusa, 24-52, 369 yds., 8 TDs

Receiving: Jack Herd, 2 rec., 60 yds., 2 TDs Tackles: Gavin Uhl, 73 tkls. Sacks: Gavin Uhl, 5 Ints.: JT Prusa, 3

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We were so young and inexperienced last season that hopefully our now upperclassman can step up into leadership roles that we lacked last year. Last year we struggled with injuries and youth with six of the eight starters from last year being first year varsity players. We are bringing back seven starters on both sides of the ball and we are going to have some depth that we didn’t have last year. (Our goals are to) be competitive in district play and hopefully host a first round game at home.”

Notes: Brett Westrup inherited a young and inexperienced team that finished 4-5 in his first year as head coach. In year two he welcomes back four seniors and three juniors with starting experience and he’s hoping the Timberwolves can close the gap against the top teams on their schedule after four of their five losses last fall were lopsided shutouts. The offensive line returns intact and will help returning QB JT Prusa develop more weapons in the offense. Isaiah Jellison is likely to carry a heavier load this season after rushing for 362 yards last fall. Gavin Uhl will lead the D after posting 73 tackles and five sacks.

BUCKLIN CANTON-GALVA

2022 Record: 6-4 / SPIAA

Head Coach: Trever Powell (4th year, 20-10) Asst.: Derek Bevan

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Andrew Bowman, RB/LB, 6-1, 180, Sr.; Lucas Kirk, QB/DB, 6-0, 165, Jr.; Kolson Cook, RB/DL, 5-11, 165, Jr.; Drew Ellis, OL/LB, 5-11, 190, Sr.; Waylon Dolezal, TE/DL, 6-1, 215, Sr.; Isaiah Pearce, C/LB, 5-8, 160, Sr.; Dairius McKinsey, OL/ DL, 5-10, 220, Sr.; Kaden Tilley, WR/DB, 6-3, 150, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Andrew Bowman, 731 yds. Passing: Lucas Kirk, 1,341 yds. Receiving: Kaden Tilley, 558 yds. Tackles: Drew Ellis, 92 tkls. Sacks: Waylon Dolezal, 6 Ints.: Kaden Tilley, 3

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Utilizing our team’s speed on both sides of the ball and being available with minimal injuries (are key to our success). (Our goals are to be) District 8 champs, and make a run for a state title.”

Notes: In just three seasons as head coach Trever Powell has turned the Red Aces into a team on the fringe of 8-Man II contention, posting at least six wins each year and consistently challenging the top teams in league and district play. Heading into 2023 the expectations are higher than ever thanks to the return of eight experienced starters. If the offense can develop a little depth along the line then playmakers Lucas Kirk, Andrew Bowman and Kaden Tilley are sure to challenge opposing defenses. Drew Ellis returns to lead the defense from his linebacker spot after the senior tallied 92 tackles last fall, while Waylon Dolezal is back along the defensive line after racking up six sacks. Bowman, Kirk, and Tilley give Powell one of the better back ends on defense in District 8. Key graduation losses at Dighton could help the district be more balanced this season.

2022 Record: 11-1 / Wheat State League

Head Coach: Shelby Hoppes (7th year, 58-11)

Assts.: Ted Regehr, Zac Hoppes, Brad Willems

Offense: Pro Style Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Lane McMannis, RB/DB, 6-0, 160, Sr.; Wyatt Collins, OL/DE, 6-2, 215, Sr.; Isom Marston, OL, 5-10, 230, Sr.; Noah Collins, OL, 6-3, 220, Jr.; Jaden Ediger, DB, 5-8, 150, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Lane McMannis, 42 car., 378 yds., 6 TDs Passing: Jaden Ediger, 7-10, 106 yds. Receiving: Lane McMannis, 7 rec., 111 yds., 3 TDs Tackles: Lane McMannis, 71 tkls. Sacks: Wyatt Collins, 3 Ints.: Luke McMannis, 4

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “With having a large, experienced, talented senior class graduate, this year will be full of unknowns. Kids will have to really compete into fall camp to earn starting spots. I think competition like that will be good for our guys and prepare them for this season. Depth will also be a concern this upcoming season since we don’t have a lot of experience returning. We are going to have to develop our young kids to create depth at the varsity level.”

Notes: For the first time in several seasons the Eagles enter the season with several questions. The graduation of three-year starting QB Garret Maltbie leaves possibly the biggest opening on the offense while, for the second straight year, C-G must replace a graduated DI player as Jett Vincent is off to Colorado State. Cason Mastre, TJ Koehn, Ryder Nordstrom and Preston Minson will all be missed as well. Seniors Lane McMannis and Wyatt Collins provide a pair of known commodities for seventhyear coach Shelby Hoppes, especially on D, where the duo are the top two returning tacklers and Collins recorded three sacks and McMannis four INTs.

COLONY-CREST DIGHTON

2022 Record: 7-3 / Three Rivers League

Head Coach: Nick McAnulty (5th year, 28-12)

Assistant: N/A

Offense: Single Wing Defense: 4-2

Returning starters: Logan Kistner, OL/DL, 5-7, 210, Sr.; Ryan Golden, QB/S, 6-5, 180, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Kade Nilges, 4 car., 17 yds. Passing: N/A Receiving: Ryan Golden, 5 rec., 60 yds. Tackles: Jensen Barker, 16 tkls. Sacks: Logan Kistner, 1 Ints.: Jerry Rodriguez, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Losing 11 seniors there will be some growing pains expected early on, but this new group of players are hungry for an opportunity to prove themselves. Several of these players have been rotational guys the last couple of years, but will now have the opportunity to show that they can handle the workload. We will not be as big of a team physically that we have been the last couple of years, but we will be faster in most positions. Team speed will be the key to our success offensively and defensively.”

Notes: An absolutely loaded Colony-Crest team entered the 2022 season with the highest of expectations and they posted seven dominant wins with three competitive losses against outstanding Chase County, Lebo, and Osborne teams, the last of which was in the regional playoff. Coach McAnulty has not posted a losing season in his first four on the job, but he’ll have his tougest reloading project yet thanks to the graduation of 11 seniors including AllState running back Holden Barker, All-State receiver Stetson Setter, and first team All-Three Rivers League quarterback Ethan Godderz leaving the most glaring holes. Just two starters return for the Lancers this fall but the schedule remains manageable with Chase County and Lebo again likely to be the toughest opponents in Weeks 2 and 8 respectively.

2022 Record: 11-1 / Northwest Kansas League

Head Coach: Ken Simon (13th year, 75-47) Assts.: Logan Lingg, Ben Wilkens

Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Carson Shimer, QB/DB, 6-3, 195, Sr.; Coltin King, OL/NG, 5-10, 230, Sr.; Daniel Cramer, SE/DB, 5-10, 155, Jr.; George Von Leonrod, TE/LB, 5-11, 185, Jr.; Ryland Price, RB, 5-9, 155, Jr.; Jack Jenkinson, SE/DB, 5-8, 145, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Carson Shimer, 66 car., 427 yds., 7 TDs

Passing: Carson Shimer, 73-111, 987 yds., 19 TDs Receiving: Daniel Cramer, 45 rec., 757 yds., 8 TDs Tackles: George Von Leonrod, 91 tkls. Sacks: Coltin King, 4 Ints.: Carson Shimer, 8

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We will need some players to step up and become consistent playmakers (on offense). Offensive line play and overall execution will need to be consistent. To make a run in the playoffs, we must be very disciplined with what we do and play very physical with great leverage to win at the line of scrimmage with some undersized players. The development of underclassmen will also be very important to provide depth. We want to improve throughout the season and put a competitive product on the field every week to be playing well come playoff time. Our main goal is to make a run in the playoffs.”

Notes: While the Hornets graduated standout players Max Neeley, Eli Wilkinson, and Hector Wilkison, several pieces are back for an 11-win team looking to make another deep playoff run. Dual-threat QB Carson Shimer and receiver Daniel Cramer provide coach Ken Simon a dynamic duo on offense and George Von Leonrod and Coltin King join Shimer as key pieces on the defense. If Simon can develop some depth the Hornets should again be favorites in 8-Man II, District 8, and have the potential to put together a third straight nine-plus win season.

2022 Record: 5-4 / Northern Plains League

Head Coach: Drew Duskie (10th year, 32-50) Assts.: Caleb Howland, Scott Jermark

Offense: Spread Defense: 2-4

Returning starters: Ian Kresin, RB/LB, 5-9, 185, Sr.; Jorden Schoen, E/WR/DB, 5-8, 130, Sr.; Austin Rice, E/WR/DB, 5-8, 150, Sr.; Kaden McCoy, QB, 5-9, 155, Jr.; Jackson Hardy, C/G, 5-8, 285, Jr.; Gabe Smith, FB/G/LB, 5-9, 190, Jr.; Gage Gradig, G/DE/DL, 6-3, 200, Jr.; Hunter Albrecht, DE/DL, 5-8, 285, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders:

Rushing: Ian Kresin, 187 car., 1,246 yds., 16 TDs

Passing: Kaden McCoy, 637 yds., 11 TDs Receiving: Ian Kresin, 14 rec., 289 yds., 7 TDs Tackles: Gabe Smith, 69 tkls. Sacks: N/A Ints.: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We are still trying to get past the first round of the playoffs. With Senior RB Ian Kresin leading our offense, our ground game should be solid. Junior QB Kaden McCoy should improve from his sophomore season. We have senior experience with Kresin, Jorden Schoen, Austin Rice, and Kaden Goheen all returning. Juniors Gabe Smith, Hunter Albrecht, Jackson Hardy and Gage Gradig will help anchor the offensive line with Albrecht, Smith and Gradig returning as defensive starters also. Jace Cunningham and Reece Remus will add depth after being out most of last year with injuries. Sophomore Landon Baetz could see significant playing time as a backup on offense and defense.”

Notes: In spite of graduating significant talent from a 6-3 finish in 2021 the Knights were able to stay above .500 with a 5-4 mark last fall and a third place final standing in District 4. Now that youth turns to a deep and experienced squad that will try to close the gap with top district teams Osborne and St. John’sBeloit. Ian Kresin will lead the charge after scoring for 23 TDs last fall to go with nearly 150 career tackles.

2022 Record: 2-7 / Lyon County League

2022 Record: 4-6 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: Nick Anderson (8th year, 42-25)

Assts.: Jay Kennedy, Branton Smith, Drue Henton

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Wes Anderson, QB, 5-9, 150, So.; Ty Smith, WR/DB, 5-10, 150, So.; Lane Loiseau, RB/DB, 6-2, 170, Jr.; Brock Armstrong, RB/LB, 6-0, 155, Sr.; Wyatt Keller, OL/LB, Sr.; Trent Hardin, WR/ DE, 6-0, 170, Jr.; Jett Keller, LB, 6-0, 140, Jr.; Carter Olson, WR/LB, 6-0, 150, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Lane Loiseau, 92 car., 581 yds., 11 TDs

Passing: Wes Anderson, 89-166, 1,367 yds., 21 TDs Receiving: Trent Hardin, 23 rec., 431 yds., 6 TDs Tackles: Wyatt Keller, 69 tkls. Sacks: Trent Hardin, 9 Ints.: Ty Smith, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “This team has a lot of ability and potential. On paper we will be as good as any group that we have had here in a long time. Last year we were very young and had limited experience. That is not the case this year. The key is going to be whether or not we have grown up and matured both physically and mentally.”

Notes: Coach Nick Anderson faced 2022 having graduated the winningest class in Frankfort 8-Man history, and an uber-young team took some lumps against a brutal schedule, but the season ended with some optimism when a battle-tested Wildcat squad knocked a six-win St. John’s-Tipton team out of the playoffs. The next week FHS was manhandled by Lebo to finish 4-6, but the writing is on the wall, the Wildcats should be much improved this fall. Every single rushing yard, passing yard, receiving yard, and offensive touchdown last fall was produced by players who are back for 2023. The defense will be similarly well-stocked as five of the top six tacklers, five players that tallied at least one sack, and both players that recorded an interception return.

Receiving: Keenan Renfrow, 30 rec., 317 yds., 6 TDs

Tackles: Tysin Bulson, 59 tkls. Sacks: Bo Peters, Grayson Dailey, 2 ea. Ints.: Keenan Renfrow, 3

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our team goals are to build off of last year and improve as the season progresses. It starts with being competitive in our district and earning a spot in the playoffs. Consistently improving on a weekto-week basis and relying on the leadership of our upperclassmen will be vital in finding success this season.”

Notes: The Jaguars scored just two touchdowns and allowed at least 46 points in a brutal four-game stretch to start the 2022 season, but were much more competitive in the final games of district play with narrow losses to Marmaton Valley (52-46) and St. Paul (56-48) in Weeks 5 and 7. Hartford closed the season on a high note with dominant wins over Marais des Cygnes and Fairfield in the final two weeks. Danen Kistner enters his second year as head coach of a Jaguar team that is sure to have high expectations thanks to the return of seven experienced starters and significant graduation losses by district teams. He will have to replace graduated multi-season standouts Ali Smith and Duncan Baker but three other players that earned some level of All-LCL recognition return.

2022 Record: 1-8 / Western Kansas Liberty League

Head Coach: Bryant Riggs (1st year) Assts.: Will Bixenman

Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Hunter Stroup, TE/LB, Sr.; Luke Zerr, C/DE, So.; Jr Gorczyca, QB/DB, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Jr Gorczyca, 14 car., 29 yds., 2 TDs Passing: Jr Gorczyca, 17-52, 277 yds., 1 TD Receiving: Hunter Stroup, 5 rec., 50 yds., 1 TD Tackles: Hunter Stroup, 62 tkls. Sacks: Hunter Stroup, 1 Ints.: Jr Gorczyca, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our keys to success will be identifying who we are as a team and competing every day.”

Notes: The Thunderhawks ended the most successful three-year run in school history with a loss to Axtell in the 2021 8-Man II championship game. As expected, graduation losses from that squad took their toll and Wheatland finished just 1-8 last fall in the only season under Matt Wolf. Bryant Riggs takes over the Thunderhawk program this fall and welcomes just three experienced players back. Riggs welcomes back junior quarterback Jr Gorczyca under center and he’ll have senior tight end Hunter Stroup to target in the passing game, while sophomore Luke Zerr is back at center. Stroup is the top returning tackler with 62 stops a year ago and Gorczyca returns to the secondary where he grabbed an interception last fall. Zerr is back along the defensive line. Riggs’ squad opens the year with a pair of brutal match-ups against 8-Man I powers Wichita County –the defending 8-Man I champs – and Hoxie. In Week 3 the Thunderhawks were scheduled to play the Wilson Dragons, but the Central Plains BOE voted to shutter the school, and Wheatland has picked up a game with the Reno County Sabres, a newly formed home school team coached by Lee Smith.

2022 Record: 5-5 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: Matt Heuer (19th, 172-36) Assts.: Chris Beikmann, John Bruna

Offense: Option Run Defense: Multiple Returning starters: Patrick Cook, OL/DL, 6-2, 205, Sr.; Levi Griffith, OL/DL, 6-1, 210, Sr.; Brigham Bruna, QB/DB, 5-9, 145, Sr.; Braden Schwartz, RB/ LB, 6-0, 150, Jr.; Camron Jueneman, E/DB, 6-0, 150, Jr.; Rieken Stallbaumer, QB/DB, 6-1, 165, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Rieken Stallbaumer, 67 car., 325 yds., 7 TDs Passing: Rieken Stallbaumer, 93-164, 1,288 yds., 23 TDs Receiving: Camron Jueneman, 24 rec., 494 yds., 8 TDs Tackles: Camron Jueneman, 60 tkls. Sacks: Camron Jueneman, 1 Ints.: Brigham Bruna, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “I feel like this team has the ability to have a very good season and it has me excited at the opportunity to coach them. However, we must stay focused and also find ways to fill the holes left by last year’s seniors. This means we need to have players step up and solidify each side of the ball. I know both the coaches and players are excited for the year, but there are a lot of questions to be answered and improvement to be made before we get to where we want to be. Our schedule will once again be tough, but we will look to try and make it another successful season for Hanover Wildcat football.”

Notes: An inexperienced Hanover squad finished 5-5 last fall, winning less than six games for the first time since a 4-4 finish in 2011. Six starters return to push the Wildcats back to their usual spot significantly above .500, but a challenging schedule with tough Clifton-Clyde, Ell-Saline, and Osborne teams in the first three weeks will prepare Matt Heuer’s team for a district that will likely see Axtell, Hanover, and Frankfort again battle for the top three spots.

HIGHLAND-DONIPHAN WEST

2022 Record: 2-7 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: John Paolino (1st year) Asst.: Remington Powell

Offense: Midway Defense: 3-3 Returning starters: Cooper Eberly, QB/CB, 5-10, 145, Jr.; Kelby Windmeyer, RB/LB, 5-11, 150, Jr.; Kolter Peterson, RB/WR, 5-6, 135, So.; Dustin Veach, RB/WR, So.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goals are to have) a balanced offense and a bend but don’t break defense.”

Notes: The Mustangs finished 2-7 last fall and Nick Fuemmeler was given just one year of his second stint as head coach at Doniphan West to rebuild the program. First-year head coach John Paolino takes over and wants to use a balanced offense to keep opponents guessing and try to make big plays on defense at the risk of giving opposing offense some yardage in the process. Paolino inherits a young team but does get back four experienced starters. Kelby Windmeyer provides one key building block for the new coach. The junior was one of the fastest sprinters in the Twin Valley this spring, recording 100 meters times in the low 11-second range. He was third at 1A state in the 100 with a time of 11.32, and also finished third in the 400 with a time of 51.82. He set the school record in the 400 prelims at state with a time of 51.54. Windmeyer is the leading returning rusher for DW this season and the only returner who earned any level of All-Twin Valley League recognition last fall with an honorable mention nod. The Twin Valley League schedule that includes games against powers Frankfort, Hanover, and Axtell will challenge the Mustangs and the trio are also the District 3 favorites again this year. Graduation losses at Washington County and Blue Valley-Randolph should help makes those games more competitive this fall. The last time the Mustangs posted a winning record – and more than four wins in a season – was a 6-4 finish in 2017, since that time DW has won three, four, four, three, and two wins in each season.

HUTCH-CENTRAL CHRISTIAN JETMORE-HODGEMAN CO. KENSINGTON-THUNDER RIDGE KINSLEY

2022 Record: 4-6 / Heart of the Plains League

Head Coach: Matt Barnett (1st year) Assts.: Mark Barnett, Shane Hines

Offense: Spread Defense: 2-3

Returning starters: Justus Huff, TE/LB, Sr.; Keaton Miller, OL/DL, Jr.; Ryland Kooiman, HB/DB, Jr.; Piercen Huff, WR/DB, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: N/A Passing: N/A Receiving: Justus Huff

Tackles: Justus Huff Sacks: N/A Ints.: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goals are to) glorify God in how we play and instill character in these young men.”

Notes: An experienced team played to a second place finish in 8-Man II, District 2, and in spite of the 4-6 record were oh so close in all but two of the six losses. Former assistant Matt Barnett takes over the program this year and inherits a team with just four returning players with starting experience and very little offensive or defensive production returns. Senior Justus Huff is the lone returning senior starter, while junior Rylan Kooiman is back after earning second team All-Heart of the Plains League honors for his play in the secondary. Gone to graduation are All-HOPL selections Tommy Barnett at receiver and linebacker and Josh Miller on the offensive and defensive line. Also, first team All-HOPL defensive back and second team quarterback Emilio Ibarra moved with his family to Elkhart in the offseason leaving the Cougars with a glaring hole at those positions. Ibarra’s father, Roberto, the former Central Christian principal, was the head coach the past two seasons and accepted a posting as a Pastor in Elkhart in the spring.

KIOWA-SOUTH BARBER

2022 Record: 6-3 / Heart of the Plains League

Head Coach: Matt Cantrell (9th year, 62-19) Assts.:

Bert Walz

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Briggs Jewell, QB/DB, 6-1, 185, Sr.; Bryson Rathgeber, RB/LB, 5-9, 175, Sr.; Lukas Dunham, WR/DB, 6-0, 170, Sr.; Bryce Duvall, OL/DL, 5-10, 250, Sr.; Xander Myers, TE/DE, 6-1, 170, Sr.; Camron Dorsey, OL/LB, 5-7, 160, Sr.; Oakley Duvall, WR/LB, 6-0, 150, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Briggs Jewell, 146 car., 576 yds., 9 TDs

Passing: Briggs Jewell, 122-210, 1,685 yds., 28 TDs

Receiving: Lukas Dunham, 30 rec., 331 yds., 8 TDs

Tackles: Oakley Duvall, 103 tkls. Sacks: Bryson Rathgeber, 1 Ints.: Briggs Jewell, 9

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our goals are to win the district title and make a deep run in the playoffs. To reach those goals we need to stay healthy and have younger players step up and fill key roles.”

Notes: The Chieftains rolled up six straight wins to start the season last fall, but injuries, and a tough late season schedule, including back-to-back games with Hodgeman County to close the season, left Matt Cantrell’s team on a three-game losing streak to end 2022. The return of seven experienced starters, including six seniors, has South Barber entering the 2023 season on a much higher note. Dual-threat senior QB Briggs Jewell will lead the offense and he’ll have healthy senior running back Bryson Rathgeber and wide receiver Lukas Dunham to share the ball with, while two experienced senior offensive linemen are back up front. Junior linebacker Oakley Duvall is back to lead the defense after he racked up 103 tackles last fall while Jewell is back in the secondary after posting nine interceptions. Cantrell’s squad should again challenge for the top of District 7.

2022 Record: 6-4 / SPIAA

Head Coach: Matt Housman (14th year, 98-37; 15th overall, 104-40) Asst.: Jared Borger

Offense: Offset T Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Owen Reece, QB/LB, 6-2, 190, Sr.; Hazen Rydquist, HB/S, 5-10, 165, Jr.; Matt Patterson, C/DL, 5-10, 230, Sr.; Seth Woods, G/LB, 5-10, 181, Sr.; Dawson Ruff, RB/LB, 6-1, 188, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Hazen Rydquist, 45 car., 199 yds., 1 TD Passing: Owen Reece, 24-43, 308 yds., 2 TDs

Receiving: Hazen Rydquist, 15 rec., 239 yds., 3 TDs Tackles: Matt Patterson, 59 Sacks: Matt Patterson, 3

Ints.: Hazen Rydquist, Seth Woods, 2 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our goals are to improve our fundamentals every week. We want to be a team that practices great and carries it over into the games. This season we hope to stay healthy so we can spread the ball around more and not be forced to be one dimensional.”

Notes: The Longhorns posted a losing season in 2021 for the first time since 2009, but finished back above .500 last fall with a 6-4 mark. A much more experienced squad will take the field for veteran HC coach Matt Housman this fall and will look to again battle Dighton, Minneola, and Bucklin for the top of a very strong 8-Man II, District 8. Senior Owen Reece –who only played five quarters last fall before suffering a season-ending injury – is back for his third season as starting quarterback. He’ll have top returning receiver and rusher Hazen Rydquist back to share the ball with and two experienced offensive linemen to work behind. Senior Matt Patterson is the top returning tackler from a season ago and also posted three sacks last fall. Rydquist and Seth Woods return after each grabbed a pair of interceptions a year ago. Jay Morgan and Austin Bamberger will play bigger roles up front this season.

LANGDON-FAIRFIELD

2022 Record: 0-9 / Heart of the Plains League

Head Coach: Kyle Finder (1st year) Assts.: Loren Nisly, Alex Pankratz

Offense: Power Wing Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Calen Wente, DE/TE, Sr.; Garrett Lanning, OL/DL, Jr.; Brodie Snodgrass, RB/ DB, So.; Connor Fowler, RB/DB, Jr.; Rex Zongker, RB/TE/LB, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Connor Fowler Passing: Connor Fowler, 25-74, 538 yds. Receiving: Rex Zongker, 3 rec., 58 yds. Tackles: Connor Fowler, 17 tkls. Sacks: N/A Ints.: Rex Zongker, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “For us to be successful this season we will need to focus on being fundamentally sound and learning to compete regardless of the circumstances. We have a good group of athletic guys that will be very successful when we understand what it takes to win.”

Notes: After seven seasons under Heath Hewitt the Falcons welcome former Tribune coach Kyle Finder as the new head coach. Finder inherits a long-struggling program that went winless last fall –the third winless record in the last six seasons – and has won no more than two games in a season since a 5-4 finish in 2014. Outside of a four-point loss to Rural Vista in Week 6 last fall, the 2022 Falcons were dispatched with much prejudice in the other eight losses scoring more than a single touchown just once while four times getting shut out. The defensive struggles were equally significant as the Falcons allowed at least 48 points in eight of the nine losses. Finder does welcome back five eperienced players with starting experience, including two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore. Junior Connor Fowler and senior Rex Zongker return with the most offensive and defensive production. Finder said he expected at least 13 players out for the team this fall.

2022 Record: 11-2 / Northern Plains League

Head Coach: Joel Struckhoff (6th year, 52-13)

Assts.: Dillon Coomes, Brayton Gillen

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Mason Baker, QB/RB/WR, 6-1, 180, Sr.; Josh Ferguson, RB/LB, 6-2, 220, Sr.; Austin Barnes, TE/LB, 6-0, 200, Sr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Mason Baker, 48 car., 688 yds. Passing: Evan Slavik, 2-4, 40 yds. Receiving: Mason Baker, 39 catch, 664 yds. Tackles: Josh Ferguson, 174 tkls. Sacks: Josh Ferguson, 3 Ints.: Mason Baker, 3 Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “The team’s 2023 goals will be to repeat as district champs and make another playoff push. Some important factors for this year will be senior leadership, line play, and playing fast and physical.”

Notes: An experienced Longhorn team was dominant in the majority of their games last season outside of a Week 3 loss to 8-Man I power Hill City and wins over Alma (Neb.) in Week 1, and Victoria in the state quarterfinals, but a historically dominant Axtell team that ended the Thunder Ridge season in the state semifinals in 2021 did so again last fall, this time in the state finals.

2022 Record: 4-5 / Central Prairie League

Head Coach: Corey Dunlap (5th year, 16-20) Asst.: Kyle Burkhart

Offense: I-formation Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Peyton Schmidt, QB/DB, 175, Sr.; Kaden Arensman, OL/DL, 190, Sr.; Conner Chamberlain, HB/DB, 165, Sr.; Cason Lemuz, WR/ DB, 155, Sr.; Efrain Holgiun, OL/DL, 225, Sr.; Zach Kraft, OL/DL, 270, Jr.; Anthony Meza, WR/DB, 155, Jr.; Trenton ANderson, QB/WR/DB, 155, Jr.; Emilio Rodriguez, TE/LB, 165, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Conner Chamberlain, 134 car., 912 yds., 12 TDs Passing: Peyton Schmidt, 33-82, 579 yds., 12 TDs Receiving: Conner Chamberlain, 16 rec., 396 yds., 8 TDs Tackles: Cason Lemuz, 105 tkls. Sacks: Kaden Armensan, 7 Ints.: Peyton Schmidt, Conner Chamberlain, 2 ea.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “In 2022, Kinsley finished the season 4-5, with the five losses coming to teams that were a combined 41-8. Losing a huge leader presence in the class of 2023, Kinsley will turn to a nearly full returning starting lineup for poise and experience. Kinsley starts with 3 difficult league opponents before entering district play. With many returning starters, the Coyotes are looking to be very competitive within the district.”

Notes: After back-to-back winning seasons the Coyotes slipped to 4-5 last fall, but nine returning starters, including five seniors, has the fans of Kinsley football with some high expectations entering the 2023 season. A near 1,000-yard rusher (Conner Chamberlain), near 600-yard passer (Peyton Schmidt), and near 400-yard receiver (Chamberlain) return to the offense while the defense returns a 100-plus tackler (Cason Lemuz) and top D-lineman Kaden Arensman. Graduation losses may help close the gap on a couple teams that were 2022 losses.

Lebo Linn

2022 Record: 9-2 / Lyon County League

Head Coach: Brian Hadley (6th year, 38-14) Assts.: Dennis Becker, Jim Jones

Offense: Spread Defense: 2-5-1

Returning starters: Corey Reese, RB/MLB, 5-7, 178, Sr.; Dominic Risner, TE/DE, 6-0, 230, Sr.; Zach Oswald, OL/DL, 6-3, 243, Jr.; Drew Konrade, QB/ LB, 6-0, 170, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Corey Reese, 99 rush, 876 yds., 16 TDs

Passing: Drew Konrade, 34-65, 714 yds., 14 TDs

Receiving: Dominic Risner, 8 rec., 140 yds. Tackles: Corey Reese, 75 tkls. Sacks: Drew Konrade, 3 Ints.: Drew Konrade, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “The Lebo Wolves have high expectations in 2023 coming off an 8-3 season as the sectional runner-up. We only return four starters but we also return multiple guys who contributed throughout the season. Players have been buying in and working hard in the weight room knowing that this season is their chance to step up.”

Notes: The Wolves went 1-2 against a brutal early schedule with a close loss to Lyndon and close win over Madison sandwiched around a loss to Burlingame. The Madison win launched an eightgame win streak that took Lebo all the way to the quarterfinals of the playoffs where the Wolves ran into a loaded Canton-Galva team that would end their season 52-6. Sixth-year coach Brian Hadley graduated significant talent from last season, including All-Lyon County League receiver and D-back Luke Davies, All-LCL lineman Austin Bailey, and second team selections Landon Grimmett and Addison Smith. The Wolves welcome back just four starters this fall, but they are four good ones including All-LCL RB/LB Corey Reese, All-LCL D-end Zach Oswald, and second team QB Drew Konrade.

2022 Record: 3-6 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: Trevor Kuhlman (3rd year, 5-13)

Assts.: Michael Voelker, Michael Rottinghaus, Brett Peters

Offense: Pistol Spread Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Gavin Turk, QB/RB/S, 6-10, 210, Sr.; Will Olson, OL/DL, 6-10, 215, Sr.; Anthony Ayala, WR/DB, 6-1, 155, Sr.; Connor Ohlde, WR/LB, 6-3, 170, Jr.; Jaxon Welch, OL/DL, 6-1, 220, Jr.; Matt Kearn, OL/DL, 5-10, 180, Jr.; Dylan Ohlde, RB/LB, 6-0, 190, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Gavin Turk, 906 yds., 16 TDs Passing: Gavin Turk 37-85, 447 yds, 7 TDs Receiving: Connor Ohlde, 5 rec., 133 yds, 3 TDs Tackles: Dylan Ohlde, 69 tkls. Sacks: Conner Ohlde, 3 Ints.: Anthony Ayala, 4

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our goal is to have the first winning season since 2005, we also know it is very important to stay healthy throughout the year.”

Notes: After a couple seasons with not enough numbers to consistently field a team the Bulldogs took a step forward last fall, improving to 3-6, to follow-up on a 2-7 finish in 2021. They barely missed picking up another victory last fall in a two-point season-opening loss to Lakeside. The Bulldogs enter season three under head coach Trevor Kuhlman with seven experienced starters back including senior quarterback Gavin Turk who rushed and passed for nearly 1,500 yards last season with 23 combined touchdowns, good for honorable mention All-Twin Valley League honors. The dynamic duo of Dylan and Conner Ohlde will play key roles on defense after Dylan tallied 69 tackles last fall and Conner recorded three sacks. Senior D-back Anthony Ayala will lead the secondary after posting four interceptions a year ago.

LOGAN/PALCO

2022 Record: 1-8 / Western Kansas Liberty League

Head Coach: Mike Jenner (7th year, 32-22) Asst.: Michael Dellimont

Offense: I Power Option Defense: 3-3

Returning starters: Hayden Gottstine, OL/DL, 6-3, 275, Sr.; Rhett Kats, QB/DB, 6-3, 170, Jr.; Caleb Sparks, TE/DE, 6-3, 175, Jr.; Mayson Vahling, TE/LB, 5-10, 165, Jr.; Kaden Graham, WR/DB, 6-2, 165, Jr.; Ryan Prewo, OL/LB, 6-0, 235, Jr.; Bryson Bollig, OL/ DL, 6-0, 245, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders:

Rushing: Rhett Kats, 59 car., 141 yds., 3 TDs

Passing: Rhett Kats, 59-144, 686 yds., 5 TDs

Receiving: Caleb Sparks, 15 rec., 255 yds., 1

TD Tackles: Carson Knipp, 50 tkls. Sacks: Caleb Sparks, 2 Ints.: Ryan Prewo, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Team goals are to be competitive in every game, and take (the season) one game at a time.”

Notes: After two seasons under Michael Hensley and former coach Mike Jenner returns to the helm for the first season of his second stint leaing the Trojans and his seventh season as head coach of Logan/Palco overall. Jenner posted four winning seasons in his first stretch as head coach including seven, seven, and six wins from 2015 to 2017. The Trojans struggled on both sides of the ball in last fall’s one-win season. After opening the year with a 60-14 win over Stockton and falling 66-20 to Linn in Week 2 L/P would go scorelss in all but two of the final seven games and allowed at least 46 points in each of those contests. The good news for Jenner is the return of seven experienced players including junior QB Rhett Kats, big senior lineman Hayden Gottstine, junior receiver Caleb Sparks, sophomore linbacker Carson Knipp, and junior linebacker Ryan Prewo.

MELVERN-MARAIS DES CYGNES

2022 Record: 0-9 / Lyon County League

Head Coach: John Bass (3rd year, 5-13) Assts.: Kris Collins

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Corey Criss, OL/DL, 6-3, 200, Sr.; Deken Colyer, OL/DL, 5-10, Sr.; Mason Rose, WR/DB, 5-10, 142, Sr.; Dallen Flatin, WR/DB, 5-8, Jr.; Sam Goddard, DL/TE, 6-2, 175, Jr.; Trey DeCaverle, LB, Jr.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We will be a young football team, we lost all of our stat leaders to graduation so how quickly we can find those leaders will determine how our season will go. Our goal every year is to make the playoffs.”

Notes: The Trojans ended 2021 on a high note

Norwich Minneola

2022 Record: 8-2 / SPIAA

Head Coach: Reigo Hahn (12th year, 61-43) Assts.: James Temaat, Pat Williams, Brandon Cole

Offense: Spread Defense: 3-2

Returning starters: Eli Lang, QB/DB, 6-1, 170, Sr.; James Littlewood, RB/DE, 5-11, 225, Sr.; Sergio Granados, C, 6-3, 270, Sr.; Cole Norton, OL/MLB, 5-10, 185, Jr.; Jesse Smith, WR/DB, 5-11, 140, Jr.; Tyson Klotz, WR, 5-7, 145, So.; Caden Miller, WR, 5-9, 150, Sr.; Levi Lang, LB, 5-11, 155, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders:

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our goal for the upcoming season is to improve every game and to be efficient in our attack. Winning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball is key. Ball security will be key as well.”

Notes: Minneola won the first five games of 2022, then got a forfeit from Pike Valley in Week 6, and edged Hodgeman County (44-30) in Week 7 before running into a tough Dighton team in Week 8 and falling 46-0. The Wildcats downed Kinsley (68-50) in Week 9 and suffered a competitive loss against perennial power Victoria in the playoffs (53-28) to close the season. Now Minneola heads into the 2023 season with a load of experience and appear poised to challenge for a district title in a very balanced District 8 that is one of the toughest in the state. Veteran coach Reigo Hahn’s best teams have featured dual-threat quarterbacks, and senior Eli Lang is one of the best in all of 8-Man. Last fall he piled up nearly 3,000 combined rush and pass yards and accounted for 46 combined TDs. He has two experienced O-linemen to work behind and D-end James Littlewood is back to anchor the D.

MORAN-MARMATON VALLEY

2022 Record: 4-5 / Three Rivers League

Head Coach: Max Mickunas (3rd year, 8-10)

Assistants: Gavin Cole, Derek Scharff

Offense: Spread Defense: Multiple

Returning starters: Daniel Fewins, OL/DL, 5-9, 220, Sr.; Chase Smith, TE/DL, 6-1, 205, Sr.; Brayden Lawson, QB/DE, 6-1, 190, Jr.; Jaedon Granere, WR/ RB/DB, 5-9, 155, Jr.; Tyler Lord, WR/DB, 5-9, 145, So.; Brevyn Campbell, TE/LB, 5-10, 160, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Brayden Lawson, 175 car., 1,078 yds., 18 TDs Passing: Brayden Lawson, 75-148, 1,323 yds., 15 TDs Receiving: Jaedon Granere, 35 rec., 610 yds., 7 TDs Tackles: Brevyn Campbell, 44 tkls.

Sacks: Daniel Fewins, Jaedon Granere, 2 ea. Ints.: Jaedon Granere, 3

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We have our sights set on competing for a district and league title. We want to finish above .500 and make it back to the playoffs.”

Notes: In year two under Max Mickunas the Wildcats posted their second straight 4-5 record. The offense was potent last season, scoring 26 points or more in six games, but the defense struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard allowing at least 46 points in seven games. The Wildcats appear well-equipped to improve in those two areas this fall thanks to the return of six starters, including dualthreat QB Brayden Lawson. The junior signal-caller accounted for 2,400 yards rushing and passing and 33 combined touchdowns, but needs to cut down on his interceptions after throwing 10. Jaedon Granere returns as Lawson’s top target in the passing game after catching 35 of his 75 completions last fall for 610 yards and seven TDs. He also rushed for 367 yards and five more scores. Sophomore Brevyn Campbell returns to lead the defense from his linebacker spot after making 44 tackles last fall.

2022 Record: 3-6 / Heart of the Plains League

Head Coach: Brian Payne (1st year) Asst.: N/A

Offense: N/A Defense: N/A

Returning starters: Jace Benge, WR/LB, Sr.; Kyler Murphy, QB/S, Jr.; Brayden Pauly, WR/C, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: N/A

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our keys to success) are teamwork and offensive execution.” winning four of their final six games and avenging a Week 3 loss to Colony-Crest in Week 9. Marais des Cygnes was unable to continue that upward momentum in year two under John Bass going 0-9 with only one game in which they scored more than 12 points going scoreless in six of their nine losses. The Trojans did score 32 points in their final game of the season, but Doniphan West scored 70. Now Bass and company head into 2023 on a 10-game losing streak, but six starters are back to try and end that streak. The schedule remains very tough with games against Burlingame, Madison, Cair Paravel, and Lebo in four of the first five weeks, but graduation losses at St. Paul and Colony-Crest may help to close the gap in those contests. Lebo will again be the favorites to win 8-Man II, District 1, but the battle for the next three spots appears up in the air.

Notes: After eight seasons, Mike Wilmott moves on from the head coaching position at Norwich and Brian Payne takes over. He inherits a team with just three returning starters and only one of those is a senior. One other senior, Tray Schroeder, transferred to Sedgwick in the offseason, where he is expected to make an immediate impact for the 1A Cardinals in the offensive and defensive backfields.

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our main goals are to be on time, listen, try and improve every week, and stay healthy. We want to play more than nine games, and be better at the end of the season than at the beginning.” www.garrettinsurance.com

Notes: Veteran coach Steve Tiernan will find it hard to replace the speed of graduated running back Connor Schurr, but his Osborne Bulldogs welcome back eight experienced starters from a 9-2 team that has goals of going even farther this fall. It all starts with three-year starting quarterback Doak Guttery, one of the top returning signal-callers in 8-Man football. Guttery accounted for 1,400 combined rush and pass yards a season ago with 30 combined TDs. He’s also one of 8-Man’s top defenders from his defensive end position where he accounted for 46 tackles with 12 of them for losses. Senior Nathan Goheen is the top returning tackler with 80 stops and eight-and-a-half sacks last fall and returning second leading rusher Hunter Howell (56 car., 503 yds. 13 TDs) is also the top pass defender after tallying five INTs. In all the Bulldogs return three of the top four rushers, four of the top five receivers, five of the top six scorers and nine of the top 10 tacklers.

2022 Record: 1-8 / Central Prairie League

Head Coach: Tom Lumpkins (2nd year, 1-8)

Assistant: Taylor Richter

Offense: Spread Defense: 2-4-2

Returning starters: Jake Hoopingarner, QB/S, Jr.; Eston Juno, WR/LB, Sr.; Hayden Morrison, RB/DB, Sr.; Kelson Juno, OL/DL, So.; Louis McVey, C/DL, So.; Ismael Cortez, OL/DL, Jr.; Logan Maier, OL/LB, Jr.; Gavin Alloway, RB/S, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Hayden Morrison Passing: Jake Hoopingarner Receiving: Eston Juno Tackles: Eston Juno Sacks: Hayden Morrison Ints.: Eston Juno Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “It will be important that everyone does their job every play. Hold blocks and utilize speed. Make good decisions in the passing game. (Our goals include) a winning season and playoff win.”

Notes: After 17 years and 101 wins Travis Starr stepped away from coaching the Otis-Bison Cougars after the 2021 season and Tom Lumpkins took over. He inherited an incredibly young team that took their lumps against a tough schedule. The 2022 Cougars didn’t score their first touchdown until the third game of the season, and didn’t score more than once in a game until the sixth game of the year. OBHS was shutout four times on the year and scored more than once in just two games, but the season ended on a high note when the offense erupted for 52 points in a dominant win over Logan-Palco. In year two of the Lumpkins tenure he gets back a team that is, well, still pretty young, but certainly more experienced. Eight starters return for the Cougars, but just two of those are seniors, while three are just sophomores. Even so, Lumpkins believes his team can post a winning season against a schedule that saw notable graduation losses if “everyone does their job every play.”

TDs Tackles: Miles Rickard, 64 tkls. Sacks: Miles Rickard, 5 Ints.: Cory Beck, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “We need to start strong and play with grit. Defensively we must do a better job of stopping the run in a run-heavy district. Offensively we need to be more balanced in our running game and passing game.”

Notes: The Panthers welcome back five experienced starters from last year’s 3-6 team including quarterback Elijah Field, receiver Gavin Massell, linebacker Miles Rickard, and defensive back Cory Beck. Massell and Rickard earned All-Northern Plains League honorable mention for their play on the field last fall. PV will start their season hosting the Reno County Sabres, a new home school program that replaces Wilson after their school was closed.

RANDOLPH-BLUE VALLEY

2022 Record: 2-7 / Twin Valley League

Head Coach: Quinton Cravens (1st year) Assistants: Blake Fronce, Lee Buchanon

Offense: Multiple Defense: Multiple Returning starters: Landon Schreiber, QB/DE, 5-11, 190, Sr..; Dakota Krause, OL/DL, 6-3, 195, Sr.; Landon Sump, WR/LB, 5-10, 150, Jr., Trace Sump, RB/DB, 5-10, 155, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Landon Schreiber, 55 car., 351 yds., 4 TDs Passing: Landon Schreiber, 89-146, 1,507 yds., 18 TDs Receiving: Landon Sump, 19 rec., 260 yds., 5 TDs Tackles: Landon Sump, 96 tkls. Sacks: N/A

Ints.: Trace Sump, 2

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Our main goal for the year is to improve our performance every week, to outperform our opponent week in and week out. Our key to success is to get the team to have some success in the summer weight room season and to carry that through the fall season onto the field. The work in the weight room will determine our ability to play fast.”

Notes: An experienced Rams’ squad found just two wins against a brutal schedule last fall, but closed on a bit of a high note, winning a Week 7 matchup with Doniphan West, 56-8, and scoring 58 and 28 points the final two weeks of the season in competitive losses. Now, after 15 years as the Blue Valley-Randolph head coach, Matt Schreiber hands the reins to former assistant Quinton Cravens. The former St. Francis standout quarterback and safety is in his first year as a head coach, and while he only gets four starters back from last year’s squad, they are in key spots on the field. Senior quarterback Landon Schreiber returns to lead Craven’s offense after tallying nearly 2,000 yards combined passing and rushing a season ago with 22 combined TDs.

Juniors Landon and Trace Sump return to lead the D.

SATANTA RURAL VISTA (WHITE CITY/HOPE)

2022 Record: 2-7 / Wheat State League

Head Coach: Brian Henry (5th year, 4-27) Assts.: Tracy Oelschlaeger

Offense: Belly Option Defense: 3-3-2

Returning starters: Logan Tate, RB/DB, 5-5, Jr.; Gavin Carson, RB/LB, 6-0, Jr.; Kole Reidy, RB/LB, 6-0, So.; Trent Hoff, OL/DL, 6-0, So.; Mason Marsh, OL/DL, 6-0, So.; Grant Eskeldson, TE/LB, 6-2, So.; Koden Sanford, QB/LB, 6-0, So.; Cody Brown, OL/ DL, 6-4, Sr.; Tyler Brockmeier, DB/TE, 6-0, So.

Returning Statistical Leaders:

Rushing: Logan Tate, 92 car., 434 yds., 5 TDs

Passing: Koden Sanford, 19-67, 273 yds., 1

TD Receiving: Kole Riedy, 9 rec., 127 yds., 1

TD Tackles: Gavin Carson, 56 tkls. Sacks: Gavin Carson, .5 Ints.: Kole Reidy, 1

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “Experience from last year helping develop confidence and winning attitude by winning a district game (is key). We were very young last year with two seniors and will be again this year with only one senior, Cody Brown. Our young guys got a lot of valuable experience last year that can only make them better and more experienced this year.”

Notes: After a brutal 2021 season that saw the Heat go winless and cancel multiple games, 2022 saw marked improvement, even with just two wins. Now in his fifth year in the program, coach Brian Henry gets significant experience back, but will still be very young, with just one returning senior starter, two juniors, and six sophomores. Names like Reidy and Brockmeier return to the Rural Vista starting lineup this fall and harken to times where Hope/Rural Vista atheltics produced consistently successful teams. If this young squad can learn to develop good leadership strategies and find some success executing Henry’s schemes early in the season, more improvement is on the horizon.

SHARON SPRINGS-WALLACE CO. ST. FRANCIS

2022 Record: 6-4 / Northwest Kansas League

Head Coach: Kyle Gfeller (2nd year, 6-4) Assts.: Landon Johnson, Dennis Gfeller

Offense: Multiple Defense: Multiple

Returning starters: Tyler Korbe, RB/DE, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Ace Edwards, FB/DE, 5-9, 190, Sr.; Braden McKain, C/DE, 6-2, 175, Sr.; Jaren Rains, G/LB, 6-0, 160, Sr.; Brenton Welsh, G/DE, 5-10, 165, Sr.; Tharyan Appelhans, TE/DE, 6-2, 165, Sr.; Cade Funk, TE/CB, 6-3, 175, Sr.; Kean Dinkel, QB/CB, 5-11, 145, Sr.; Travis Korbe, LB, 5-10, 155, Jr.

Returning Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Tyler Korbe, 102 car., 609 yds., 7 TDs Passing: N/A Receiving: Tyler Korbe, Tharyan Appelhans Tackles: Travis Korbe, Jaren Rains

Sacks: Ace Edwards, Tyler Korbe Ints.: Kean Dinkel

Head coach’s outlook for the 2023 season: “(Our goals are to) start strong, and make a long playoff run. Play together, and unselfishly (is key).”

Notes: Kyle Gfeller made an immediate impact in his first season as head coach of the Wildcats, helping them improve from 3-6 in 2021 to 6-4 last fall. In year two under Gfeller the Sharon Springs-Wallace County coaches and fans will have high expectations thanks to the return of nine starters, including seven seniors. The graduation of All-State QB/DB Cade Johnson does leave a big hole to fill, but every other position on the field will have experience helping the new quarterback transition to the starting role with confidence. Look for big seasons from first team All-Northwest Kansas League running back Tyler Korbe, first team D-lineman Ace Edwards, second team receiver Tharyan Appelhans, second team offensive linemen Braden McKain and Jaren Rains, and second team All-NWKL linebacker Travis Korbe. The season kicks off with a tough Quinter team and will provide one of the top Week 1 games.
