NECKBONEOLGY Will the unfair treatment end for by Kenneth Lumpkin

Keith Fair after 20 days in jail?

Kenneth Lumpkin

The headline in the daily paper read, “20 days in jail for former Racine alderman.”

The epic of former Racine Alderman Keith Fair and his alleged attack against a pregnant employee ended after reaching a plea agreement recently. The agreement imposed a 20-day sentence in Racine County Jail. You may remember the story or perhaps you have forgotten it since it happened so long ago. (June 2012) Fair who no longer resides in the city, pled guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge to put the ordeal behind him. The charges stemmed from a dispute with a woman he reportedly had a relationship with. Fair elected to begin serving his sentence immediately after his hearing last Wednesday. With credit for time already spent in jail after his arrest, and probable time off for good behavior, he will likely spend just over two weeks in custody. This should bring an end to the ongoing and widespread media lynching of the dethroned Alderman. He had repeatedly been front page material for the daily paper. Why am I writing about Fair’s ordeal? It brought back nightmares to me of the old south. As black men we knew what could happen it we became too out spoken. Anyone who spoke up as Fair often did at city council meetings, was labeled an “uppity ni**er” and could be

beaten, and in some cases lynched. Those memories are more than 50 years old for me, yet they are not something that can be forgotten. Fair is currently one of six plaintiffs in a discrimination suit against the city which, as of this writing, is moving through federal court toward trial. It is his longstanding, public protestations against discrimination and other objectionable city policies that some feel is the real story behind his arrest. Domestic disputes, even when they reach the stage of violence, are almost never front page news and are resolved quickly. Because of his high profile as an outspoken critic, every imaginable charge was leveled against him, including felony strangulation

and suffocation, despite the fact that the woman involved did not register a complaint until pressed to do so by authorities 2 days later. Further evidence that there is more behind this story is the fact that Fair’s computer and automobile were held as “evidence” for an entire year. This is unprecedented in a domestic dispute case. Following his guilty plea to the misdemeanor battery charge, Fair told presiding Judge Allan “Pat” Torhorst, “I’m truly remorseful for the situation.” Judge Torhorst stated that he would not consider the facts that Fair had served in the US Marine Corp, had no criminal record and was an elected official.

Pastor Lawerence Kirby ll and Bishop Lawerence L. Kirby met with Congressman Paul Ryan, at the Bread for the World and its partner organizations at its annual faith leader fly-in on May 6-8 in Washington, D.C. The purpose of this fly-in is to bring together Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other faith communities to advocate for robust humanitarian and poverty-focused foreign assistance funding. As a participant, you will have an opportunity to meet with your congressional delegation to discuss the importance of federal funding for international development and humanitarian programs, followed by a day of training for future advocacy back at home.

Some individuals start their plans months in advance. It is no surprise to learn that some prom goers spend upward to $1,000 for the one night of fun and entertainment. This year we visited Horlick High School and photographed joyful goers and they promenaded down the walkway.

The Drama Begins: Angela Bassett Wants To Direct a Whitney Houston Lifetime Movie — But Houston’s Family Is Threatening a Lawsuit Scheduled to show in 2015, the film will be titled “Whitney Houston,” and will chronicle the rise and fall of one of the greatest selling artists of all time. The film will reportedly focus on Houston’s courtship and tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown. Written by Shem Bitterman, the film will be produced by The Sanitsky Company, and will be executive produced by Larry Sanitsky. It has not yet been revealed who will play Whitney Houston, but it is thought to be Bassett herself. However, Houston’s family is not in agreement with the film. According to TMZ, they are considering a lawsuit to stop the move from being produced and aired. TMZ reports: “We’re told the family has already expressed displeasure to Lifetime and made it clear they weren’t on board with a TV movie. Sources close to the Houston family tell us the estate is planning its own movie for the big

screen.” But Bassett, via a statement to the press, commented, “I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story. Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.” And this is not the first collaboration between Bassett and Lifetime. They also collaborated on last year’s original movie “Betty & Coretta” starring Mary J. Blige, Malik Yoba, Lindsay Owen Pierre, and Bassett herself. That film told the stories of Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz, the wives of Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, who both formed a life-long friendship after their husbands were killed. It seems only time will tell if the movie will ever make it on screen.
