Lifelong northside resident named to head GOTV for young adults

Candidate for Alderman says we need jobs in our community By Dominica Jaramillo Change seems to be the ongoing theme these last couple of years; and appropriately so. Communities and citizens have faced the woes of bad decision making and a recessed economy for far too long. Second district alderman candidate Jameel Ghuari agrees with the need for change, and that’s exactly what he plans to bring to the table. A native Racinian, Ghuari is most known for his long term position as executive director of the John Bryant Center. With already 30 years in the social service sector, Ghuari looks at the new position as an opportunity to broaden his service to others. In addition to being an effective leader in the community, Ghuari also maintains, “I am a fighter. If there are issues that need to be fought, if there’s a need for someone to do the right thing, I am that person.” So what issues does Jameel plan to ‘fight’ as

the second district alderman? “There is one issue that is city wide - there are no jobs; we need jobs in our community.” With plans already under construction, Ghauri shares his vision for economic growth and the creation of new jobs for his district, “There’s no grocery store on the south side of town and there’s no pharmacy. Those are essentials that every city should have, and those two particular businesses we don’t have on the south side.” With the implementation of these two inspirations, Ghauri is hoping to employ a large percentage of the youths, as well as adult, within the community. In this way, the establishments become, ‘not only community friendly, but employment friendly’ as well. Another issue nipping at Ghauri’s heels is the fact that the community needs assured availability of their alderman. “There needs to be set hours at

Angie Nunn Kenneth Lumpkin, a candidate for Racine 4th District County Board Supervisor, has appointed Angie Nunn to head his get out to vote campaign. Lumpkin, who served as Supervisor for eight years, is trying to take back his seat from Jim Kaplan, who defeated him by only one vote in 2008. Lumpkin says Nunn, will work to encourage young voters between the age of 18 and 35 the importance of voting in local elections. Nunn says, “Our young people do not have a problem with voting in national presidential elections, but do not understand that local elections have a greater impact on their day-to-day lives” In addition to helping registering new voters, she will be in charge of educating people on who is eligible to vote. “Many younger voters who are felons feel they can no longer exercise their right to vote,” she said. “People who are no longer “on papers” (no longer on probation) have a right to vote.” she explained. Lumpkin says over the years there has been a great deal of criticism about the young minority voter. “We want to make sure that their voices and concerns are heard.” Lumpkin says that he and other candidates running for office would like to know what’s on the minds of our young people.” A listening session has been planned for Thursday March 25, at 6 pm, at the the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center, 1134 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. The event is sponsored by Lumpkin and Sherrie Lawson, who are candidates for 4th District Alderman and Supervisor positions. Resident will be able to speak on issues that will impack their live as residents of the 4th District. For additional information call: 262.632.9370

Tiara Ormond to participate in internship in China

Calvin Simmons

Simmons desires is to steer young people away from a negative street life

Tiara Ormond is the daughter of Ernest Ormond and Sylvia Adams. Tiara is currently a student at Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, WI . For the past two years she has been a member of the Gateway Marketing and Management Association. As a member of this Association, Tiara has participated and won many awards and recognitions. As a result of her academic achievements as well as extracurricular achievements, Tiara was selected to be the 2009-2010 Gateway Technical College Kenosha Campus Ambassador, as well as the 2009 Commencement Student Speaker in which she received her Associates Degree in Business Marketing. Through sponsorship byCherry Electric, Tiara has most recently been selected to participate in an internship in China during the month of March 2010. This is an exciting and once in a lifetime opportunity for Tiara. The entire family wishes to congratulate Tiara on this wonderful business venture and achievement.

Some people spend a lifetime trying to figure out how they want their future to unfold. For Calvin Simmons, it was simple. He wanted to be a mechanic.Simmons mother died when he was seven, and he and his siblings had to make it for themselves. He believes the death of his mother is what gave him an early start in understanding people. Soon after graduating from Park High School in 1983, Simmons joined the U.S.Army, and became a lightweight diesel mechanic. His time in the military would form a foundation for the life long native of Racine. He spent seven years in the service and afterwards enrolled in Lincoln Technical Institute, located in Union, New Jersey. In 1993 he received the prestigious Jack Apgar STS Car Service Award. At that time Simmons said, “I demanded peak performance from myself in the military and I have applied that attitude to my studies here at Lincoln Technical Institute. He believes that your attitude is the guide to how far you will make it in life. He shares his feeling daily to anyone who might give him a listening ear. An outgoing, enthusiastic, and very discipline man, Simmons said a person’s attitude has everything to with his capacity for success. Simmons says it is time for him to give back to the Racine community. In a recent meeting with Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, he outlined how he can direct teenagers towards a healthier lifestyle. Simmons says educating students about technology skills can be many of the their tickets to a better way of life. Using himself as an example he said, “What I did was reengineered my life from the streets to technology professional skills.” His dream is to draw interest to the field of mechanics and hopefully start an internship program for inner-city youth.

COP house planned for 16th Street to answer spike in crime The nonprofit that owns the community policing houses throughout the city is planning on opening a new COP House on 16th Street. Dave Voss, president of Racine Community Outpost, is scheduled to appear before the Redevelopment Authority on Wednesday to discuss plans. Community Outpost has a pending offer to purchase 1900 16th St. for a community policing center. The property

is now a parts store for industrial tools, according to a letter Voss wrote to the RDA. General Industrial Supply Inc. is listed at the address. The organization is asking the RDA to use $50,000 in tax incremental district money to help buy and rehabilitate the property. Once complete, the building will house two COP officers and possibly Department of Corrections employees, according to Voss' letter.

City fines gas station $2,700 for video gambling machines The city made good Wednesday on a threat to seize video gambling machines in businesses without proper licenses. The Racine Police Department seized six video gambling machines from the Marathon Gas Station at 3024 Rapids Drive. Owner Amarjit Singh was also given six citations for $460.50 each. Video gambling machines are allowed in establishments with Class B liquor licenses, which are typically given to bars and restaurants. Several convenience stores and gas stations in the city, which

the community center, for the alderman, so the community knows their alderman is going to be there.” Ghauri would also like to establish an online presence. “We need to develop an interactive source to come up with solutions to aldermanic problems. Each alderman should have a website.” According to Jameel, the website would be used to send and receive information, make announcements and provide citizens the opportunity to share their opinions about certain issues through a blog. With these increases in accessibility, Ghauri expects citizens to be more confident in their ability to address their alderman with cares and concerns they have about their community. On a final note, Ghauri also share an important observation he’s made. “I think when you look at the second district, there are two sides, the east side [associated with security and high employment rates] and the west side [associated with fear, crime and high unemployment rates].” While he notes that both ‘sides’ are different, he maintains that each area wants to feel secure and have opportunities to build a better life. “As things exist

we’re please to be joined by the following special guests, who – along with Milwaukee Art Museum staff – will be available for interviews: Cristina Acidini, Superintendent of the Authority for Cultural Heritage and State Museums, Florence Alessandro Cecchi, Director of the Pitti Palace, Florence David Alan Brown, Curator of Italian Painting, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC To reserve your spot, please reply to this email or call me at (414) 443-0850 x 17 by March 19.

now, they [the sides] have different issues that restrict equality. There has to be a district wide plan.” As alderman, Jameel plans to address those issues; this includes holding a number of forums geared toward open discussion with himself, the mayor or anyone else who can help address the ongoing matters. For those interested in hearing more about Jameel Ghauri’s plans for the second district, a forum is being held March 18, 6:00 p.m., at the John Bryant Center. This is an opportunity for the citizens to meet, question and discuss issues with the two district candidates, Ghauri and Eric Marcus. With Election Day quickly approaching, Jameel closes by encouraging citizens to get to the poles April 6. “One of the big issues among African Americans, and many inner city residents, is that they don’t vote, but they want to complain. If we want to exercise our right to complain, then we also have to exercise the privilege to vote.” So? Go vote for what you want!

typically have Class A liquor licenses to sell pre-packaged alcohol, were running video gambling machines in violation of state law. The city sent out a letter in December warning the Class A license holders they would seize video gambling machines if they continue to operate them after Jan. 1. Here's the press release put out today by the Racine Police Department on the seized machines:

Racine County’s E3 Program Receives National Recognition Now, the whole country knows about the success of Racine County’s “E3” (Employ, Enrich, Engage) Program. The County’s employment and training program, which engaged 240 young people in “green jobs” last summer, received broad exposure on March 6 in Washington DC at the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) Conference. Four youth involved in E3 were the featured speakers in a presentation entitled “Developing Youth Programs to Build Social and Economic Capital.” One reason the program stood out from other “stimulus” programs from around the country was because Racine used strong community partnerships to leverage the federal funds and garner additional monetary and inkind local resources. “Our time at the conference was eye opening,” said 20 year old UWMilwaukee student Grace Caringello from Burlington. “We did not realize how unique our E3 Program and Racine County were until we heard the great reaction from the audience.” Ms. Caringello worked with a team this past summer to develop a recycling program for the Burlington School District. At the conference she shared some of the public service announcements that she and her colleagues created. The uniqueness of E3 was also highlighted by 18 year old Prairie School Senior David Sanchez who created “JobLink Racine” to employ homeless youth. In Washington DC, Mr. Sanchez

Shown are Olivia Fields, Alice Oliver, David Sanchez, County Supervisor Chairperson Peter Hansen, Mark Gesner, Steven Cotton, County Executive William McReynolds, Grace Caringello. described how he was one of the community partners that helped develop the county’s program and even collaborated with other youth to create the “E3” name. He also described his experience with the ARRA Scholars Program, a continuing education course held at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside where students from Racine County learned about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and assessed E3’s economic, environmental and social impact. In addition to the conference, the youth

also went to Capitol Hill to meet with staff members from Congressman Paul Ryan’s and Senator Russ Feingold’s offices. As 21- year-old Gateway Technical College (GTC) student Olivia Fields explained, “Meeting with some important people was a great opportunity to have our voices heard.” Ms. Fields worked in the summer at a local green business, Pacific Sands, and is currently employed at the 21st Century School. Of course, not all of the time was spent in meetings. The group also made the

most of their few days in the nation’s capitol by seeing famous sites ranging from The Library of Congress to The Supreme Court to The Holocaust Museum. “The night tour we took of the monuments was the most memorable for me,” said 21 year-old Steven Cotton. “It was pretty crazy to actually see the Lincoln Memorial and stand where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his ‘I Have A Dream’ speech. It was the place in Washington, DC that I always wanted to see.” Mr. Cotton was part of an environmentally-friendly lawn care entrepreneurial business in the summer and currently works at the Racine Family YMCA. He plans to build on what he learned in E3 by enrolling in GTC’s new Wind Turbine program and then perhaps working on a Sustainable Management Degree at UWParkside. Our County Executive William McReynolds said it best when he stood up from the audience at the end of the NAWB presentation and noted how the four young people were a terrific representation of Racine County’s impressive youth and how very deserving they were of this national acclaim. County Executive McReynolds and County Supervisor Chairperson Peter Hansen were in Washington DC attending the National Association of Counties’ 2010 Legislative Conference. To learn more about the E3 success story and find out about future E3 opportunities, please go to the WDC’s website at www.wdc.racineco.com.

Food Bank director Dan Taivalkoski at last year's concert

There's mostly good news from this year's Thoughts for Food, as the final numbers are tallied. Attendance was up 8 percent over last year, and food donations were up 40 percent. Income was also up, 7 percent -- but so were expenses. Nonetheless, by all accounts, Dan Taivalkoski, executive director of the Racine County Food Bank, tallies up this year's concert a success. Here are the final numbers (subject, as always, to minor tweaking): Net income from the benefit concerts was $15,495, just $207 less than last year. But 3,628 pounds of food were collected, compared to 2,588 last year. Total attendance this year was 1,812, compared to 2009's 1,681. Some of the money collected came from the friends and family of Lester Eaton, a World War II vet who, before he died on Feb. 24 was a member of the Circle 8 Square Dance Club. Memorials in his name totalled $900.
